Deep in the forest a curse has settled. A secret soon to be unveiled. The dark clouds the earth. Leaving no prints of blood. The gleaming eyes in the dead of night. The wings that are about to fly. Far away and appear unseen. To all who search but never see, the secrets under their noses.. Both have been traced to the murky marshes. Both connected, seeping with blood. The eyes that tell but have never seen, the murderer that awaits unseen...

Prologue: A sleek figure swerved around thick pines, his fur condensed in the shadows. He made no sound. His scent was so well hidden that he could kill someone when standing behind them. His scent wouldn't give him away, he had coated it so well in pine needles, that his enemy would just pass him off as another clanmate. His dark black fur caught on a fallen tree, and tugging himself loose, he moved forward.
His movement was slick and acrobatic. His tail lashed from side to side. Mud hung to his skinny frame, blending him well with the murky marshes. The figure stopped, narrowing his eyes, he called, "Anyone there?" If just like on quo, another figure, a brown tom by the looks of it, leaped onto the forest floor. He was massive, his eyes blazing suns each on their own.
"Who are you?" The slim tom asked, his black pelt ruffled a bit. The large tom stepped forward, "You know very well who I am." He responded, with a hint of authority mixed in. The black tom took a step back, nearly falling over. "Oh! I'm sorry, uh my eyes aren't used to this kind of lighting in this place. The massive tom lashed his tail once, bellowing "Yes, indeed." He pricked his ears, swirving around.
"Stay quiet!" He hissed. "Someone might be watching us!" The black tom ruffed his fur up, unshealthing his claws, and drawing himself into the attack position. Suddenly the brown tom disappeared into the bushes. The black tom kept himself in the attack position, however, ready to spring. When no one appeared from the bushes, the black tom sat up, relaxing himself. After a couple minutes, the brown tom reappeared, blood staining his jaws and paws. His left ear was nicked and he had some scratches on his flank.
He yawned and streached, his white teeth colored red. He shrugged and meowed, "It was just, uh, a small error." The black tom nodded, though the faint scent of fear lingered on his pelt like prickly burrs. "The 'error' didn't hide their scent well, they were snapping twigs. Probably heading to Shadowclan's camp. So I took care of that." The brown tom narrowed his eyes at one of his bloody paws, the smallest smile coming on. "Now, what I was going to ask you." The tom started. "Do you have it ready 'Pricklyfur'?" The black tom almost turned tail and ran. He forced a nodd, averting the gaze of the towering tom.
Though they matched in skill, the black tom was smaller in size which was at his disadvantage. The brown tom snickered, his gaze killing anything on sight like a bullet. "Now, you must go, someone might still be hearing us. " He meowed with a concerned voice. The small tom flicked his ear. "Safe journey home my friend." He meowed, dipping his head. The brown tom ignored him, instead leaping higher and higher into the pine trees, leaving the black tom, all alone.

Chapter 1- Starting out
+Sootpaw's POV+
The bustle of cats surrounded Sootpaw. The jet black tom twisted and nuzzled himself between his clanmates. "Sootpaw! Where are you?" A deep voiced tom called. As Sootpaw made his way out of the mesh of cats, a pale brown-tan tom was flickering the tip of his tail irritatedly. The tom's muscles ripped under his pelt. His yellow eyes stared deeply into Sootpaw's eyes. Sootpaw's pelt cringed with unease. It was if Brakenbush, his newly appointed mentor, was staring deep into his soul. Well my soul is fine, so stop peaking! Sootpaw thought frustrated. Sootpaw rushed over to the irritated tom, and meowed in greeting. "Sorry Brakenbush." Sootpaw apologized softly, head lowered, ears flat.
The two stared at each other, eyes burning intimidatedly. No one backed down, instead Brakenbush just laughed. "Huh, you've got spunk, kit." He meowed. "You have good potential." Sootpaw swelled with pride. Leaping to his paws, from where he was sitting, he asked. "So what are we doing first?" The anticipation tingled his voice. "Hold on champ," Brakenbush placed his paw on Sootpaw's head, nuzzling his head roughly. Sootpaw pulled back instantly. "We have to meet up with Pineleg and Feathermist and your brother and sister first." Brakenbush got to his paws, streaching and unshealthing his claws, jaws wide. He streached his back left leg lazely.
Brakenbush meowed goodbye to his mate, Birdsong, a black she-cat who was sitting by a large shrub. Birdsong lifted her head, "Be careful and have fun!" Birdsong flicked her ear and laid her head on her paws. "Hey! I'm not an apprentice, I won't be having fun!" Brakenbush insisted, blushing slightly. "Oh sure, you never had fun with your other apprentices, well, should I ask them?" She smiled, her eyes narrowed. Brakenbush was blushing heavily now, his fur spiked a little. "You know what, ugh, nevermind, we will speak of this later." Brakenbush averted his mate's gaze. "Come on Sootpaw, the other mentors will be waiting." He meowed quickly, dashing out of camp. "I'm pretty sure you let a few of your apprentices sneak a couple pieces of extra prey and skip battle training a couple times!" She laughed, laying back down. As Sootpaw followed his mentor out of camp, he watched as the pine trees swayed in the breeze.
Soon they reached a clearing where a silver tom and dark brown tom were waiting with their apprentices. The silver tom meowed a greeting, not seeming annoyed as Sootpaw had thought. "Hello Brakenbush." The silver tom dipped his head to Brakenbush. The tom's yellow eyes gleamed of calm. "Feathermist." Brakenbush dipped his head in response. "Aww, and this must be Sootpaw." Feathermist turned to Sootpaw, the tall tom towering over him. "H-hi Feathermist." Sootpaw meowed his greeting, slipping aside to where the two apprentices sat. "Owlpaw! Cinderpaw!" Sootpaw bounced over to his litter mates. Cinderpaw, a small, gray tom with darker gray flecks and a pale gray chest, flicked his tail, avoiding eye contact. Owlpaw, a orange and white patched tabby leaped to her paws, straining herself from bouncing all over. "Hi Sootpaw!" She meowed friendly. She nuzzled his muzzle and nudged Cinderpaw with a paw. "Hey come on Cinder Winner! Cheer up!" Owlpaw licked Cinderpaw's muzzle encouragingly. Her orange eyes gleamed sadly. Feathermist stared at Owlpaw, his tufted ears pricked, a small smirk developing on his face. Feathermist turned to the dark brown tom, Pineleg. "Hey Piney, you ready?" Pineleg flattened his ears at the nickname and stepped forward. "Don't call me that!" He meowed, his gaze narrowed at the silver tom. "But yes I am." He meowed.
Feathermist gazed at the new apprentices, sunlight flashing in his eyes from where it cut through the pines. "Ok, Owlpaw, Cinderpaw and Sootpaw. We will take you out each to different parts of the territory. Cinderpaw, Pineleg is taking you to the thunderpath, Sootpaw, Brakenbush is taking you to Carrionplace and a couple of the hot spots for frogs and Owlpaw." He turned to his apprentice who was swatting at a moth. Featherwhisker narrowed his eyes. "Ok guess we are going back to camp.." That set Owlpaw off. "No Feathermist!" She pleaded, her voice echoing. "Take us out please! I want to learn how to hunt and fight and-" "Just listen then!" Feathermist snapped, fur bristling. Sootpaw had never seen the calm silver tom so worked up. He was shocked. "I was going to take you to the Windclan border but you don't seem to care." Owlpaw ran over to her mentor, eyes huge and watering. "Pleeaasseee." She sniffled. "I promise I'll listen, promise!" Owlpaw responded eagerly. Feathermist tilted his head and shook out his fur, dust flying from it. "Promise?" "I promise!" Owlpaw meowed, quivering with excitement. "Ok then. Everyone meet back here at sunset."
Sootpaw padded through the squishy marshes, his paws coated with mud and reed bits. His muzzle wrinkled at the foul stench up ahead. He trudged clumsy, nearly falling over and sinking into the deep mud. Brakenbush however was light footed, padding delicately through the marsh with ease. His muscular shoulders rippled under his pelt with every step. Sootpaw was a few tail-lengths behind the tan tom, and as much as he tried to hurry himself, he would trip and land face flat in the mud. "Where are we going again?" Sootpaw asked, moaning as he tried to shake the reeds from his fur.
"You'll see." Was Brakenbush's only reply, and Sootpaw remained puzzled. Sootpaw flattened his ears and gazed up at the trees, pine needles falling to the ground. Sootpaw sneezed as one landed on his nose and he fell over, growling as he tried to heave himself up from the ground. Sootpaw growled, he yanked himself up, and continued to follow Brakenbush.
They arrived at a foul smelling twoleg den soon after. Sootpaw wrinkled his nose at the bitter stench. Brakenbush craked a laugh at his apprentice's expression and meowed, "This is Carrionplace." Sootpaw gazed around the den, eyeing the flies that buzzed around a heap of carrion. "Oh I know this place!" Sootpaw realized suddenly. "You do?" Brakenbush looked puzzled, head tilted. "My mother explained that she found the biggest rat here once." Sootpaw informed his mentor. Brakenbush nodded, not taking his eyes off the den. "Indeed, your mother was quite the hunter." He meowed. "Do you know what other kinds of prey Shadowclan feeds on?" Brakenbush asked his apprentice. Sootpaw's mind swelled with anticipation.
He expects me to know the answer! Sootpaw realized. Oh no.
Brakenbush drew a paw over his ear, still eyeing Sootpaw intently with no sign of frustration coating his face for Sootpaw's lengthy thinking time. "I'll give you a hint, it's a green creature and-" "Frogs!" Sootpaw blurted. "I don't know how I didn't realize sooner." Sootpaw admitted embarrased. "Don't we also eat lizards?" Brakenbush nodded. He flicked his tail towards the sun, which was bright, its orange-yellow glare gleaming. It was low in the sky now, and Sootpaw figured his paws would fall off just taking another step. Clearly Brakenbush didn't sense the irritated flick of his tail and moan from his jet-black apprentice, because he simply meowed. "Come on, I'm taking you to the Thunderclan border." Sootpaw managed a simple grunt, but padded after his mentor in utter silence.
++Cinderpaw++ I padded along in the soft grass. Each individual blade sweeping against my slim frame. I was boney, with not much on me but skin and bones. I watched my mentor ahead of me, narrowing my eyes to find his dark pelt against the mighty, towering pines. Pineleg winced with every step, I noticed and I was urged to come and ask him what was paining him, however I did not. I simple kept my distance. We were close to the thunderpath, for I smelt a fringed odor that I figured was the dreaded path where Twoleg monsters rushed on, and where sometimes, cats were killed. I had heard of the stories of my mother, brave and bold, standing up to the monster and surviving, though taking moons to recover because of her trauma and somewhat minimal injuries. She was the biggest role model to me, highly respected and infact, respectable. I focused my gaze back onto my mentor, for Pineleg had just caught me lost in my thoughts of some sort. I flicked my ear in response to his irritated grunt and he flicked his tail for me to follow him. I scented a muddy scent a little ways off, however I didn't alert Pineleg. I instead kept padding after him at a steady pace.
Soon we reached a gray path that smelled of foul odors and blood. I shivered and wrinkled my nose at the stench of the blood.
Some cat-or thing, must have been crushed recently. I reckoned with myself.
Pineleg took a step towards the dark path, his body bravely bearing being close to it.
He sniffed in the foul stench, not wincing at it. His green eyes blazed, and for a meer second, shook with worry. I wondered how he could stand even being on it. I watched as my mentor yowled something, and I then saw a crem and brown tom on the far side of the deadly path, fear stricken. Pineleg who was only a few tail-lengths away, yowled at the rather fluffy cat and ran to it. The cream and brown warrior was in shock unable to move. His lips, as I realized he was a tom, began to make out the silent words that seemed to pierce the sky, and as I saw what he was looking at, I too broke out in that cry; Monster.

+Owlpaw's PoV+
Owlpaw huffed a long breath. The bordom that incased her would never end, she thought, for it seemed that her mentor made her treck on forever. Feathermist, Owlpaw,s mentor didn't seem to notice the young she-cat's felings on the current situation; Instead he made them continue to walk up towards the border with Windclan. Owlpaw sighed, hoping her mentor would notice.
Why can't something interesting happen? Owlpaw thought.
Feathermist stopped, to Owlpaw's suprise, and peaked over his shoulder at his apprentice. "You ok Owlpaw?" The silver tom asked. "We're almost at the thunderpath where you can see the fourtrees." He announced, purring. Owlpaw felt a tinge of excitement run down her spin. She then quickened her pace, racing ahead through the pines that covered Shadowclan's territory.
Owlpaw's bordom soon turned stiff and the feeling of glee over took her. She raced down the slope towards the Thunderpath, eyes gleaming intently. Feathermist called for her to slow down, but was soon cut off being he was winded. The short blades of grass tickled Owlpaw's paws and she watched as the cut off from the soil and tossled into the air around her.
Feathermist watched as his apprentice padded through the mud and gravel that lined the side of the Thunderpath. Owlpaw licked her paw, drawing over her ear slightly. Her orange eyes spotted something ahead in the distance. The blur of brown on red confused Owlpaw, and she meowed, "Feathermist, what's over there?" She flicked her tail to what she had just seen. Feathermist tilted his head then let out a gasp.
"Pineleg!"
Owlpaw watched as her mentor raced over to where the still tom layed. Feathermist kicked up gravel and mud which then, had coated Owlpaw's pelt. Owlpaw ignored it and hurried after her mentor, gravel getting stuck inbetween her toes. She had run so fast, she was barely able to breathe upon reaching her long-legged mentor.
As Feathermist shook Pineleg, desperately trying to get him to respond, Owlpaw's body was filled with worry.
She had found no sign of Cinderpaw, though a faint whiff of his scent lined the trees into the woods. Owlpaw could hear the sound of Feathermist softly sobbing, his body hunched over the frail, almost black tom's body. Owlpaw swallowed her worry about her absent brother and meowed, "Let's get him off the Thunderpath and take him back to camp."
Feathermist made no reply for a single moment then turned his head, tears staining his fur under his eyes. He nodded hesitantly and proceded to pick up Pineleg from the scruff, gently, and lay him on the gravel, clear from the monsters that roamed on the path, and from the fumes they exhaled.
"Pineleg! Help!" Cinderpaw gasped, the air knocked out of him. Heads turned towards Cinderpaw, unknowing of the danger. The apprentice had raced back home, promising his unconscious mentor that he would find help. He had ran back to camp shocked, a waterfall of tears streaming down his face. He got lost several times trying to find his way back to camp, so when he did it was a relief. Toadstar pushed his way through the crowd of bustled warriors. Toadstar was prickling ever so slightly, but he held the young apprentice's gaze. "What's wrong Cinderpaw, what happened?" The tall tom meowed, authority in his voice. Cinderpaw shivered, bristling from head to toe. Cinderpaw shrunk down, quivering. Starlingpaw, an older apprentice standing a few fox-lengths away sneered. "He probably just saw a tiny, petty sparrow. What a wimp! Starclan for-" "Hush Starlingpaw!" Birchmask, his mentor silenced him with a stern look and a lashing tail. Toadstar ignored the two, "Cinderpaw, please tell us what's wrong, we can help you." The dark tom meowed reassuringly, crouching down to Cinderpaw's level.
"Pineleg got crushed by a monster."

Chapter 3
Loud shouts of disbelief and panic arose instantly as Cinderpaw spoke. Cinderpaw gazed frantically around, searching for Toadstar's expression as he whispered quietly to Cedarfoot, the clan deputy. Toadstar's voice cracked a few times with grief as he tried to compose himself for the crowd of cats panicked around him. He took a deep breath. "Where is he?" He asked, hesitantly, as if trying to denie that Pineleg was dead, but infact still alive and well, serving his clan. Cinderpaw meowed in reply, "He's by the Thunderclan border-sir." Toadstar's face was unreadable, though he told Cedarfoot to watch the camp as he rallied together Marshwhisker, Adderleap and Barktail and headed out of camp with the wary apprentice.
The Warriors were hard on Cinderpaw's tail, and he tried to hold himself together in front of the warriors.
Why did this have to happen to me?
