As soon as I heard that Cherith would be writing the next SE, I tried to find out what opinions she had on certain characters- and turns out she's given out very little information on that. But, in the few things she did say, she said that one of her favorite character is Leafpool and her most recent favorite ship was CrowxLeaf.
Now... for one, I only looked this up cause I was curious if her opinions could possibly affect the SE she writes. This is highly debatable, since Kate has blatantly stated that she hates Crowfeather- yet wrote The Last Hope, which has him and Leafpool have a decent moment between each other. My hunch is that Kate probably would have loved to keep Crowfeather and Leafpool as far apart as possible or even antagonistic- yet the editors spoke and so it was written. However, that doesn't mean she doesn't affect the book at all. There were barely any deaths in the actual book The Last Hope itself- they were simply announced in Bramblestar's Storm- and she later admitted that she didn't like those scenes- especially gory ones. Had Cherith written the book we probably would have seen more character's death scenes- or at least their deaths mentioned- and the battle would have been a whole lot more violent. I wouldn't be surprised if Cherith, after given the allegiances after the "final battle", had more cats die after-the-fact cause she felt more should of.
For two... Cherith's opinions that she's stated to the fans are 11 years old. The last- and only time- she answered questions was way back in the Erin Hunter Chats 2 and 3. My own opinions on characters are completely different now than they were 11 years ago, heck, I don't even know if I've been reading the series for that long. It's highly likely that her opinions on Leafpool and her relationship with Crowfeather are likely to be a lot different- especially because in 2007, the date that the last chat she was in was held, was literally right after they had broken up. CrowxNight hadn't happened, Leafpool's kits weren't even born yet- they were fresh out of their "honeymoon", and I think it's fair to say that a lot of people had a different opinion on the pairing back then.
So thinking about this, I personally think her actual opinions-whatever they are currently or in the past- on the matter will have little to do with the main storyline of the book, since the editors tell her what the characters will do generally no matter what she writes the book like, things are going to happen that she has no control of. However, considering a SE is a lot bigger than a regular warrior book, I think she has a lot more room to... basically do what she wants. With a strict deadline and a relatively small book, I think she and Kate stick to what the editors say most of the time- yet in SEs, they have more room to branch off from the storyline- and that's where their own personal opinions can become more evident.
But like I said, who even knows if she still likes Leafpool anymore. Or likes her relationship with Crowfeather. Maybe she now hates them- who knows.
Anyways, what do you think? Do you think her 11-year-old opinions will matter in the SE? Do you think she's opinionated at all at this point? How do you think her writing will affect the book?
