.Mortimer grit his teeth as he just about ran back to the apartment he shared with his nephew. He'd been out later than he'd originally anticipated. The trial he'd been observing and the subsequent class, had run a bit long, and by now the sun was down. Hopefully Marsh wouldn't be too annoyed at him, especially since Morty was about 90% sure the fridge only had a jar of mild salsa left in it. They only lived on the second floor, so taking the stairs was actually faster, especially since Morty's legs were long enough to take them two at a time. He burst into the apartment. "I apologize, Marsh," he called quickly, "my schedule, of course, ran long, and I had no opportunity to call or text."

(Hey look I managed a reply anyway)
Marsh knew his uncle would be late, so the boy had started in on his homework with a bottle of juice and a bag of chips that he'd snagged from the middle school vending machines before heading home. He hadn't expected much food to be available for him, so he often made trips to the vending machine and was probably offering it plenty of money. He'd just been working on some science packet when Uncle Morty burst into the apartment. He rolled his eyes but didn't open his mouth until his uncle spoke first.
"So what's for dinner?" he asked. He was very obviously a growing boy and had the appetite of a horse. Despite that, he maintained a rather skinny and slightly muscled build due to the multitude of sports he participated in. Figuring that his silent homework time was done for now, he closed his book with the packet marking the page and slid his chair back to stand up. The young boy stretched and then ran his hands through his sandy colored hair, no amusement on his face as he looked his caretaker up and down.
(And my female will be Zoey Lane)

Oh heck. Morty rubbed his chin, thinking. "Delivery?" He asked. He looked around the apartment. It was sort of a mess, and even just a few years ago(right out of high school, mainly) it would have made his skin crawl. His college years had made him less sensitive to a mess though, which may not have been a good thing. He didn't want a deliveryperson to see the apartment in this state, as petty as it was.
"Actually we'll go out." He decided, "Subway? Or have you heard of anywhere interesting during school?"

Marsh didn't look extremely excited by the idea of delivery. Tonight was one of the few nights that he didn't have any kind of practice or club meeting after school and he was dying to get out of the small apartment he shared with his uncle. He pulled himself onto the kitchen table and let his legs swing a few feet above the floor as he listened to his uncle talk and switch ideas around.
"Not subway," he said, making a face. He had that for lunch the past few days and was just done. As a middle schooler, he wasn't allowed off campus for lunch, but he paid the right people and he could get whatever he wanted brought to him by some friends or their older siblings. "What about that stupid diner down the street? It's cheap and it's close?" he suggested. Well, he didn't know if it was cheap but he assumed it was.

Was it cheap? Morty really hoped it was. Money was always a bit tight, even with the occasional financial support from his parents, loathe as he was to accept it. They were bad at the best of times. Financial support was the only support they were willing to give. They'd flat-out refused to take in Marsh after Lana and her husband had died. They claimed they already went through all that with her and Morty, and were under no obligation to do it again.
"Alright," Morty said, hanging up his bag and double-checking his wallet in his pocket, "we'll take a look; get your coat."

"I don't need a coat," Marsh grumbled, rolling his eyes. He was clearly in a bad mood tonight, but didn't do anything to show it except be a little bit more of a preteen punk than he usually was. He grabbed his sweatshirt from a hook anyway. It was blue and gold with the last name 'Jacobson' printed onto the back. Obviously not Marsh's, but t belonged to a high school. A junior that had been like an older brother to Marsh for a few years now.
He then moved past his uncle and left the apartment, figuring the older man would be following behind. The diner wasn't a far walk from the apartment, so it wasn't long before Marsh pushed open the heavy glass door.
The diner wasn't very crowded at the time and Zoey Lane was behind the counter, shoulders slumped as she wiped down the countertop from the last customers that had eaten there. They came often and always left a nice tip, so Zoey really did her best to give them good service.
(How much as Morty changed since high school? Like do you think Zoey would recognize him since that whole incident seemed to affect her more?)

"Yes, you do!" Morty objected even as Marsh was leaving. He sighed, annoyed, and ran after his nephew. As much of a brat as he was being right now, Morty wasn't going to let him walk to the diner by himself. It was night and they lived in a big city; Morty was allowed to be paranoid.
They reached the diner quickly, and Mortimer was relieved that very few people were there. He wasn't the biggest fan of crowded buildings, especially after a long day. It seemed to be a "seat yourself" sort of establishment, as there wasn't a host to show them to a booth, so he glanced down at Marsh, "where would you like to sit?" He asked, already pretty certain that it was going to be at the counter. When he was 12, sitting on top of stools had been the coolest thing ever.
OOC: Well, Morty's pretty distinctive-looking, especially his height(he's a tall lad, I forget precisely but it was 6'1" or 6'2" or around there). He had longer and messier hair in high school, but he cut it+started actually brushing it in college. Besides that, he looks pretty much the same, just a whole bunch more tired-looking.
Also, where is Maureen at the moment? With a babysitter? Or would Zoey bring her in?

Marsh had expected Morty to catch up with him, so he hadn't waited for his uncle to lock the door. Instead, he'd traveled with his hands in the large pocket of his sweatshirt, listening for his uncle's footsteps behind him. He hadn't even turned to acknowledge his presence until they were inside the warmth of the diner. The pair had never been here, so Marsh took his time looking around the place. A little cheesy, but the food smelled good. His stomach rumbled at the idea of having some good food. Something deep fried and greasy. Not good for you, but something that tasted good.
At Morty's question, Marsh shrugged and immediately made his way to the high stools at the counter. He climbed onto one and spun slightly, looking almost like a little kid instead of a little punk. There was even a bit of a smile on his face as he looked down at his feet, hanging slightly above the floor.
Zoey had noticed the pair come in and grabbed two menus to deliver. When the boy sat down at the counter, Zoey approached the spot and set the two menus down. "Hi, welcome to Tiny's Diner," she said with a smile, barely faltering when she recognized the man. She almost didn't at first, but there was a nagging feeling that she knew him from somewhere when the two entered the diner. It seemed to have popped into place when she greeted them. Morty. High school. The way he had embarrassed her in front of what had felt like their entire school. She was still bitter about the situation.
But she pushed it all aside because she knew she needed the tip that he would likely leave.
(Um i could honestly see either? Maybe since it's a bit later she could have brought her in instead of wasting the money on a babysitter?)

"Thank you," Mortimer barely glanced at her, instead opening the menu and glancing over it, wincing on instinct. At first glance, every dish in this entire restaurant must be 80% grease. Not the sort of thing he usually went for. He was sure that if he took a singular bite out of anything they sold his heart would immediately stop working.
He eventually decided on something that probably wouldn't kill him and closed his menu, "I'll take your biscuits and a glass of water." He looked up at the waitress and paused a moment. There was something about her face that tugged at the corners of his mind. But it could just be his imagination.
OOC: Alright. I might have her sitting at a corner table or in the kitchen with a book or coloring if there's a good plot reason for her to be around.

While the two were looking at the menus, Zoey took a moment to glance over at the man as she continued to wipe the counter. Yep, it was definitely Mortimer. The thought made her body tense up, but she forced herself to relax. And he had a son? She thought about her own daughter for a moment and then looked over at the boy sitting next to Mortimer. No, he was way too old to be his actual son... Maybe her old classmate had began babysitting to make a little extra cash? Or a relative that was staying with him for a few days? She couldn't picture Mortimer having a child of his own, but she figured her old classmates wouldn't have expected her to have a child either. Luckily she'd just graduated and was able to hide the girl's existence.
"I'll take the chicken tenders and fries with ranch on the side. And, uh, Sprite," Marsh said, calling out his own order. He placed the menu on the table and frowned slightly at Morty's order. That wasn't exciting at all.
"Of course. It'll be right up." Zoey had written down their orders and then returned the menus. She relayed their orders to the kitchen and then went to go full their drinks. She returned soon with a glass of Sprite for the boy and a glass of water for the man. She avoided looking at Mortimer as she offered them the beverages.
(Yeah I figured I'd leave t up to you)

OOC: Hhhh sorry this is taking so long, I haven't forgotten this and wanna continue, just haven't had the time/right mood to roleplay recently. Maybe we could talk a bit about the characters and how we want their future relationship to be and maybe future plot points?

Don't worry about that I get it. I'm still kinda recovering and also got swamped with a bunch of work from school so I get it. I'd be 100% up for plotting/chatting/character/relationship stuff

OOC: Aw sweet!
Where do you think we'll go after they confront each other here? I'm thinking Mortimer will recognize her in a few and be like "hey remember that thing that happened that was wild lol". But how do you think we'll continue their interactions in a realistic manner instead of them avoiding each other for the rest of their lives out of awkwardness? Maureen and Marsh might be good for facilitating that.

Yeah I'm just like completely and totally done with everything right now so something chill like chatting about this would probably actually be good for me
I was thinking Maureen and Marsh as well. Maybe Maureen is like hanging out in the back and comes out to ask Zoey something and Zoey is like "go back there kiddo I gotta work" but Marsh has a soft spot for kids and starts interacting with her and like Zoey's babysitter just quit or something so they end up somehow working it out that Marsh will babysit her for cheap? Cause like he needs stuff to do and also probably wants some money and Zoey needs cheap childcare and then Mortimer won't have to fee bad about running late or anything because he knows Marsh is busy with Maureen anyway?

Yeah, that makes sense! Zoey and Mortimer can learn a bit more about each other through Marsh and Maureen, maybe, or awkward small talk when they're dropping the kid at the other's house. And that leads to them giving each other another chance.
What do you think their relationship will be like early on? Because I could see Zoey maybe not trusting(depending on how you wanna characterize her, of course) Mortimer for a little while, and Morty getting a little annoyed(at himself and in general) because of that. He's just sorta...not good enough(yet) to understand that public embarrassment leads to a deeper grudge than he first anticipated.

Super awkward small talk at first. Like I'm gonna feel bad for them because of how awkward it'll be because honestly if Marsh wasn't babysitting then Zoey would probably be happy to leave the two of them completely alone
Yeah zoey probably won't trust him at first, or at least be a little bitter because of how much it had hurt her back then but if they talk and kinda form a shaky friendship at first I guess(?) then she'll probably eventually get over it somewhat quickly. Especially if we end up getting a scene with Zoey and Mortimer like sitting down and taking kinda thing

Same with Mortimer. He's not the most social person or the easiest to get along with in the first place.
Yeah, they definitely need a sit-down convo.
Mortimer's got a bit of a story already established about his turning point and him trying to become a better person. I'm excited for him to hopefully share it at some point.
Mortimer's most meaningful relationship was formed by fighting against a common enemy. That person is still his best friend, even if she's currently traveling around Europe with her boyfriend and he hasn't seen her in ages. He's a lot more likely to form a positive relationship if he and the other person have some sort of obstacle to face together. Which in this case could be their problems with being single parents with financial issues. Or maybe something else? What do you think?

I can't wait for them to sit down and talk sometime. It'll be fun to see, especially if their walls are somewhat starting to come down so they can share some stuff with each other
Ooh I'm excited for Zoey to hear his story
Hmmm yeah a common obstacle would be nice. The single parents thing could work but that's also pretty broad. I mean the only thing I can think of is someone ending up in their life that they both dislike? Maybe Zoey's boss is super unfair to her or something and causing problems there and he also works at Marsh's school and is causing him problems? Idk. I mean if we could find something more specific like that that might work too but if not then we could just use the single parent thing?

OOC: Hmmm....yeah, something like that could work! Morty enjoys scheming against people a little too much, and might get Zoey involved in some elaborate, morally-grey-but-still-legal plot to solve this problem, fpft.
Also, mildly unrelated, but I really want Morty to be faced with the more messy parts of his job, and have to work through them. Like...he shadows/assists an attorney who manages to get their client acquitted by reasonable doubt, but then the client tells them that they actually did it and nothing can be done about it because of double jeopardy. Idk, I sorta want Morty to feel guilty, whoops.
