yo
your choice, really. right now I have all people on one continent (I'll doodle up a map tonight) but if you want to do another that's cool too. There's a group of people on my side on the coast called the YN that believe there's another, safer, continent so remnants of your people on this side could be the reason for their belief if you choose to go that path.
My peoples are more tribal/rustic which makes circles necessary since they're natural formations people found and built around. They don't have the technology to keep the beasties out by their own means. It's a safety thing: if you have some people that are more advanced and could keep themselves safe using other means, that's cool too. Or be like the Gors were in my canon and live in a place that is pretty much uninhabitable by anything and stay safe that way. Basically speaking, you probably shouldn't make a societal structure that leaves them vulnerable to constant attacks by dragons and other megafauna. Any way of accomplishing that is game.
You can even have a group in the same circle or neighboring circles as where I'm building. The short I rambled with has the guild exploring a pass through the mountains that's only clear for a few months of the year, so the areas beyond that are both separate yet close to the circles on the southeast. For that plan, you could either have the group be guild members on a long expedition to find habitable land (or an outpost for further exploration), a colonization party that works to set up a new town there after the guild found a natural circle, or a totally different race/group not affiliated with the southern circles/guild altogether (never encountered, runaways, nomads ect)

sounds good!
There could also be some conflict on the idea of ownership? Because people can only realistically live in the protected zones, there isn't really an idea of land ownership. Maybe you own a house or a set of tools or a herd of goats, but you live in the circle not own a part of it, mentality. The guild, therefore, is really only to satisfy curiosity. Exploration as a risk to understand. My 'main character' so to speak, his goal is to add to the beastiary the guild keeps: a book detailing all the different living species with as much information as they can possibly gather on them.

[[ okay so usually roleplaying is done in the third person, but since this is a bit different and I started this arc in first person, I was going to try to continue in first person (or at least Numa's pov). If you'd like me to switch back to the normal third just tell me, I'm equally comfortable in both tenses I just wanted to give this a try. Also including tldr's at the bottom because these things will get long and a summary will probably be helpful for both of us to include (both for the other person and ourselves looking back!) I'd also ask that if any new creatures/plants/characters/language pieces are added that those are defined partially or in full at the end so they can be easily added to a gloss.
Just putting this up as I work on a bit of a transition ]]

[[ sure, we have a bunch of time to create our own systems and show each other how they work, so once we both have a good idea of what's happening with each we can get something rolling in terms of civilizations colliding and all that jazz.
sounds like a plan. ]]

Numa Almi kept us around the outpost for the next few days. Each morning we would be given a different task to complete before nightfall, usually about logging information in our journals. For the most part I worked beside Tam: the Gor would often point out random things about whatever we were studying that I wouldn't think to notice but were critically insightful towards the survival of the organism in its environment. I'd like to think that my analysis expanded upon his notes as well. It fell to me to do the sketches for the both of us, but a conversation with Tam never went stale and so doing the extra work never seemed like a chore. Rekh ended up following Cyrin, but wasn't as lucky as I in terms of a teammate. Each of them did their journals separately and silently and from what I could gather, Cyrin, unsurprisingly, did the work much quicker than Rekh could. After this realization I took to helping Rekh shore up her journal with my notes before Tam woke in the mornings: their relationship had become even more aggressive as the time went on and I felt it best to reduce the time they spent together as much as possible.
It felt as if we had just gotten into a routine when Almi told us we were to pack everything, even the pans we had taken to leaving in the cave during the day as to not add extra weight to our packs, leaving us in a buzz of speculation. “Think we’re going further into the mountains? Over the pass? It’s open this season, right?” Tam said as he crammed his bedroll to fit atop his pack.
“We have been out here a week and it is only our first expedition,” I noted.
Tam swung the pack over his shoulders and stood. “Your first. I’ve been out here once before and I’ll eat my own shoe if Cyrin hasn’t been on expeditions for a year.”
“It’s her first.”
“What?”
Tam turned and Rekh paused behind him, pulling her hair back into a braid. “It’s Cyrin’s first time out of the Circle with the Guild. Maybe you boys should talk to her yourselves.” She tied off the braid with a sharp pull and disappeared through the cave entrance, leaving us alone in the emptiness. I shrugged and picked up my pack, following Tam and the others on the trail back home.
It wasn’t as though I hadn’t tried to talk to Cyrin, we had shared a few words during our week in the cave. Only all the conversations had been one sided besides a grunt or simple phrase coming from the older Atmeri girl. After a few tries I hadn’t pushed any harder to get to know her: if she wanted to be quiet and lonely that was her own choice.
Very little changed in the three days it to us to march back to the Circle. Tam and Rekh were on moderately better terms as long as I acted mediator. Cyrin was as mysterious as on the journey outwards, setting her own path and keeping us with a steady supply of fish and small creatures for our supper fire. Almi had given us the freedom to choose what to explore as long as we logged at least one complete page a day: Rekh took to recording birds and their calls while Tam collected some larger insects in vials of alcohol for later analysis, logging the place and conditions of where he caught each one.
I decided to vary my sources and study small portions of systems: I’d list plants and animals found in a meter by meter square and work on analyzing the connections between them during the walk. All in all the journey was uneventful, which Almi told us was a small miracle as he hadn’t even heard the thin wails of the tunipolkau at night (a comment that left me sleeping with one eye open the rest of the trip).
A pale lavender crackled beneath our feet as we crossed into the protective field of the circle. “You have two days to do as you’d like before returning to classes at the Guild,” Almi said, blue eyes sweeping over us. “I recommend working over your journals. The Guild won’t be so tolerant of your pitiful attempts as I was.” The scarred Atmeri lifted an eyebrow, what we had learned was his approximation of a smile.
Home. I relaxed into the familiarity of it, leaving the tension outside the circle. Rekh waved as she followed Almi southwest while Tam, Cyrin and I headed towards the main city in the center of the circle. Tam and I fell into our usual venues of conversation as Cyrin trailed along, eventually disappearing without either of us noticing.
We arrived at Tam’s home first and the Gor attempted to wave me along but I planted myself in the walkway with my arms crossed. “What, aren’t you proud of all the brave things your brothers accomplished?” I teased, knowing full well that Tam’s siblings were made out of sunshine and fantasy. For once, Tam had no words. Yet the situation was taken out of his hands as a broad woman with curled blonde hair and Tam’s, hazel eyes burst out from the doorway to smother him in an embrace.
“Okiymaes, Tamvironin.”
“Maescell, Ma,” Tam said tightly through the accidental strangulation he received. I grinned.
Tam’s mother released him, holding him out at arm’s length to look him up and down. “I hope you’ve been eating well out there.”

[ tldr: Speed through the week of adventuring, logged a bunch of (unspecified) species, got back to the circle, Numa is over Tam's house.
Tunipolka(u): Think bats. But they're less fuzzy and while they have 'wings' in the form of skin between their limbs, they can't fly or even glide, but crawl across the ground. They scream at night during breeding season and like mosquitoes, require blood to reproduce.
Okaimaes: Gurrentai'm, a formal welcoming into one's home. Maescell: Gurrentai'm, a formal acceptance of hospitality ]

(Okay! Like I said, I'll add more details concerning the actual culture and land itself as we go. This is just the roughest of skeletons. It may even look pretty bad compared to yours.) Federation of Albary
Albary is a country that rose from the ground out of necessity. Once a land homed many tribes, the wilds of the land and creatures that live there grew too much for the people to handle on their own. Banding together, several tribes merged together finding safety in numbers. There was conflict at first, to be expected as different cultures mixed, but after five decades, differences were settled, some sort of government was created, and laws were put into place. It was a rocky start, but it was one that smoothed out as the centuries rolled by. In current day, Albary is a federation, consisting of ten factions, each dedicated for a specific purpose. Each faction is divided into production, commerce, and residential districts in attempts to keep things organized and neat. At the core of the society, science and technology resides. The people have dedicated years to researching not just the creatures, plants, and minerals of the world, but advancing technology to protect themselves from the dangers as well as aid in the research. To compare Albary with the rest of the world, it was clear that the country was far more advanced. When it comes to the government, things have evolved from several types before settling into the voting system that they use today. Each faction nominates two represent them in the capitol, voicing the needs and concerns of the people. This representatives make up the Congregation of the Elect, CE for short. These people are responsible for making laws for both the country as a whole and for the faction independently. They appoint Overseers to be the medians between themselves and the common people, taking reports of all kinds and taking action according to them. From the outside, one would think Albary was one big factory, and they wouldn’t be entirely wrong. Wildlife
Axenet: This two foot long, bulky, fey, slimy beast that walks on stubby legs makes its home in deep canyons, hiding in shadows and always staying near sources of water. It tracks its prey by scent more than sight. While it has two eyes, they are not the best in picking out details. Their vision is blurred, which makes them aggressive creatures. Sneaking up on one would not be a good idea. Because of their poor eyesight, these creatures will lash out at anything unfamiliar. It attacks with spines that line its spine. Yet despite their ferocious appearance, they are only two feet long their diet consists many bugs and smaller amphibious creatures. They travel and live alone, only meeting others of its kind once every two years for mating season. Coral- Meqi: This captivating and incredibly rare creature is a type of fish. It's about the size of a dolphin, has four large side fins, a long, pointy dorsal fin and a huge, powerful tail and small anal fin. They have a soft, delicate skin covered in thin, coarse scales, which is usually either light red, pink, light brown. They live in the depths of the ocean and are quite rare. They're herbivores and their fairly small mouths and wide tongue are ideal for eating hard corals. They make low pitched sounds in order to communicate, but rely more on body gestures and physical contact as warning for danger, discoveries of food, or socializing in general. These creatures are quite forceful, but they travel a lot and thus have no real territory nor urges to defend it. They mate twice a year and they mate and bond with one or two partners throughout life. Which, with their long lifespans, is to be expected. Amitola: This is a very common type of bird that can be found throughout the country. It's about the size of a peacock, has two huge wings, two strong, clawed legs and a short, powerful tail. They have a soft, but strong skin covered in small, thin feathers, which is usually tawny for females while the males have brightly colored wings ranging from sky blue, light red, green, and a sunny yellow. It’s because of these feathers that they have become a much sought after target by poachers for both their feathers and for pets. They live in quiet areas and are extremely common. They're omnivores, eating insects, small rodents, and certain berries. They have long beaks and tiny, almost hidden ears. Their heads are long and narrow in comparison to their bodies. They make sounds ranging from low pitched to fairly high pitched, making their songs some of the more complex than the average song bird. They can even mimic the songs of other birds. These creatures are quite timid, and are more likely to run and hide if danger approaches. However, if a person were to stumble upon their nest, which are made on the ground in secluded areas, then they are known to defended themselves. They mate once a year and they mate a new partner each time. Unlike most birds, these can see in color, so it plays a huge role in choosing a mating partner. The female will chose a partner based on her preference of win color. Plants

that's awesome !! and the technology side will certainly make things interesting when they come exploring. speaking of which, what era do you picture they're in technology wise? mainly in markers of what transportation and energy sources are available.
since the other side is basically still early iron era most technology is high tech for your albarians (albarys? albars? albarians? xD)

[ good reasoning there. Though you can also be creative with maybe one or two facets of life being far more advanced than the rest due to the resources being distributed differently than earth's. Maybe they don't have an easy supply of iron/copper and had to get creative with alloys early on or have lots of natural alkalines to make primitive batteries with. I'm thinking of making the second on my side of the world, just because there's so much to be done with even a weak chemical battery.
and no worries ^^ take the time you need; I'm just excited to see what you make ngl ]

[ For me the research half is all part of the fun of it ^^ and no need to get crazy if you don't want to; venture as close or as far from normal earth as you'd like, your stuff is completely up to you. I'm sticking quite close to copper-age earth with my side of it so there's not going to be much change if/when we start trading sides.
and worldbuilding shouldn't be a chore. Honestly the best ideas come from writing it and realizing how well the new ideas fit with your plans. but seriously this is supposed to be a light, fun thing so if it feels like work or you're not enjoying it just say something xD I don't want to torture someone over a little roleplay on a cat forum ]

The Nova Hotel was a hub of excitement. A famous spot for explores, it was a den for those with stories to tell and action a plenty. Sitting at the heart of Commerce Faction, it was no wonder why the building was a favorite. It was much larger than the houses of the normal folk, standing three stories high and could easily fit five normal house inside on one floor. It resembled the mansions of the CE than anything, just less gaudy. As grand as the size of the place is, the actual furnishings were simple. The most decorated room in the whole place is the taproom, the main spot where all the guests gathered for food, drinks, and entertainment. No matter what day of the week it was, there was always a steady supply of excitement in the building. Tonight, however, two guests of the hotel were not taking part of the usual nightlife. The Caras twins were up in their rooms, waiting patiently. Well, Colton was. His sister, however, was doing nothing of the sort.
“How much longer is it going to take to everything in order so we can head out?” Chloe bemoaned as she paced back and forth in the room she and her brother shared.
The two of them had been waiting around for the last three hours. Earlier that morning, they received a call from their employment agency telling them that they had a new job lined up. It would require them to act as guides to go exploring the wilds of a land across the sea. As expected, they had agreed to take the job. While neither of them had spent a lot of time overseas, as it was dangerous crossing the ocean and took months to travel back and forth, the siblings were both eager to have an excuse to go back.
“Will you sit down?” Colton asked, staring at his sister as she paced. Where she was a bundle of energy waiting to explode, he was the complete opposite. The man sat in the sofa with all the comfort in the world, enjoying a glass of Red Stinger, a type of beer made from the roots of the Tulsi Redbrush. The plant is known for it’s poisonous flowers, but the roots, when processed correctly, create a fine drink that left a stinging after taste in one’s throat, hence the name. Despite its kick, however, it is a very light drink. No one every truly got drunk drinking their weight of the stuff. It was for that reason Colton was drinking it now. He didn’t want to risk getting drunk right before leaving for a job. If they were going to be sailing through the night or first thing in the morning, he certainly didn’t want to be nursing a hangover at the same time. “Have a drink, get off your feet. I’m sure the owner of the place would appreciate if you didn’t make trenches in his nice floors.”
Chloe shot her brother a withering glance, but came to a stop anyway. “All I want to know is why it’s taking so long,” she stated, folding her arms over her chest. “We ever have to wait for arrangements to get finished on all our other trips.” “All of our other trips have never been overseas,” Colton pointed out, taking a sip of his drink. “You realize that they have to put together an entire crew to man a ship, stock up with provisions and supplies, and not to mention we have to wait on our clients. It takes time to gather all of the pieces together.”
He was right, of course, but that didn’t mean Chloe’s restlessness eased. If anything, it made it worse. She didn’t like having to wait on other people to get her stuff prepared for travel. Her brother and she were more than capable of putting together packs and rations for themselves and clients. It was what they had spent years of their lives learning at the Lyceum. Yet she knew that they would never be able to handle the task of gathering together a crew of sailors who would take them through treacherous waters under their command. Let the Trade Masters handle all the complicated orders. Still, why couldn’t they have a crew already on hand? Why make them wait all evening in the Nova while things were being put together?
Colton sighed when his sister stayed silent. “If you want something to do so badly, then why not head down to the taproom, hmm? I’ll stay here to greet the runner when he comes with the okay to leave. Who knows? You might even run into the people we’re supposed to be guiding.”
“I think I may just do that,” Chloe agreed. While the room was spacious, it had little in means to amuse her. All the rooms were furnished with necessities, not anything extra that might get stolen. There were beds, dressers, and tables and chairs. If one wished to decorate the room, it had to be with personal belongings. Therefore, there was nothing for her to distract herself with during their time in the hotel. With his prompting, the woman nodded and headed to the door. “Don’t forget to come fid me,” she called over her shoulder, heading out of the room.
tldr: Brief intro for the Caras twins and their upcoming jobs as guides.
Tulsi Redbrush: A plant with poisonous, bright red flowers, but the roots are edible. Using the roots, people can make a low to non-alcoholic drink that packs a punch going down known as Red Stinger.
