(Ahaha, I getcha there, but I found it more funny than anything else ovo) Inwardly breathing a sigh of relief, Ashcloud was glad the deputy was well intelligent enough to realize the dangers purposefully engaging a wolf would cause. Although he'd offer his strength, he wasn't at all confident in his ability to tangle with a wolf even with Ashwing and Daisytail at his side. Nevertheless, he felt more secure in Ashwing's following comment, giving a nod of approval, though he doubted she required his input. "Sounds good. At worst, if it's still lingering around, we'll have time to think of a plan to get rid of it." He soon replied, his golden eyes resting on the deputy contently. "With any luck, Either it's gone or we can find a way to make it leave without a direct confrontation." Perhaps some might have seen him as cowardly, but Ashcloud was all for tact if it could prevent unnecessary injury.

(Hey! How was the trip?)
Ashwing nodded grimly at Daisytail's words, feeling a slight pang in her stomach at the confirmation—though not unexpected—that her clanmates shared the concerns hovering like a cloud about her head. "I'm glad we're all in agreement; let's go, then," she declared, raising her head and pushing her paws into a brisk walk that she hoped looked a bit more eager than it felt. Putting it off will only make it workse It was a personal motto that had served her well throughout her days; she sent a silent prayer to Starclan that it wouldn't betray her now. "We found the scent originally just up there, and it seems stale enough to start looking." She gestured with a flick of her tail to the abandoned prey a few steps ahead.

Ashcloud couldn't help the worry bubbling in his gut but nevertheless he had little plan to do anything less than as he was told. After all, he wasn't fool enough to believe his clanmates weren't dealing with the very same fears as well. Even so, the massive tom seemed to regress back to his outwardly lax behavior, though his ears remained perked. At Ashwing's command, he gave a nod of somewhat reluctant understanding before picking up his pace behind the deputy. Against a wolf, even he had to admit his size offered little advantage, that in itself only added to his concerns. They naturally lacked the strength of a wolf and if it came down to speed... A shudder ran down his spine, unable to prevent the image of himself snatched up in the jaws of such a beast from flashing across his mind. In speed he knew he had no chance with that very size that oft gave him an advantage weighing him down. "Wasteful things, aren't they?" the tom muttered, with a hint of humor to his voice, as if trying to push away the cloud of worry that stained their, or rather, his own thoughts.

"That they are," Ashwing replied, dipping her head in agknowledgement of Ashcloud's comment—and allowing a slight, sympathetic smile to flit across her muzzle for the space of a moment in response to the wariness hanging beneath the words before she schooled her face back into grim determination. There was no sense in letting her fear show, she reminded herself, ever the gruff deputy. She had a duty to lead—at least until they reported back to Greymoon. Hopefully all in one piece. Upon hearing Daisytail speak, the pale gray she-cat lifted her head again, her eyes narrowing as she echoed her clanmate's motion and inhaled the wolf's foul scent. "Good catch—and a blessing for us," she remarked with a bit more relief than she had intended. "Hopefully, the lack of young will make it less territorial. Let's see what we can find," she added as she began to wander warily down the trail again.

Ashcloud fell back to silence as the two she-cats passed words between one another, his attention focusing hard on the surrounding territory. He wasn't sure if he was glad he couldnt catch any traces of the beast nearby, aside from the stale scent, or not. Perhaps not knowing where it was made him more uncomfortable than laying his eyes upon it himself. Then again he had never been one for surprises, let alone of this nature. Even so, it was a relief that they wouldn't be dealing with a family of filthy wolves, one was bad enough. Nonetheless, at Ashwing's movement, he took up walking behind her once more, keeping his pawsteps quiet. A part of him dreaded the scent of the wolf, fearing as any cat would that the scent would soon bare a fresher nature. After all, a scent would always follow where it came from, no matter how stale it grew.

Ashwing inhaled deeply, warily examining the scent that filtered through her half-parted jaws before nodding in confirmation. "You're right," she replied. "Good catch." Rolling hershoulders to dispel the crick—of persistent anxiety or just tiredness, she couldn't be sure—forming along her spine, the smoke-colored she-cat dipped her head invitingly to Daisytail. "It seems like you have the strongest nose among us; if you want to take the lead on tracking, I'll gladly watch your back," she suggested.

"Good," Ashwing replied, allowing Daisytail to move a step ahead before falling into her place at the middle of the patrol. She positioned herself with care, far enough behind the calico she-cat before her to allow sufficient time to respond to any sudden shifts in direction but close enough to dispel, at least partially, the prickle of guilt creeping along her spine at putting a clanmate between herself and a potential threat, even if cowardly self-preservation was far from her intention. Her eyes scanned the edges of the path continuously as they walked, and she tasked herself with sorting through the scents lying beneath the wolf's trail for any sign of danger. "I can definitely smell the trail getting fresher too," she remarked. It's just a short walk to camp from here, especially for a wolf... "How far do you think we are from its den?"

At Ashcloud’s comment, a snort escaped Ashwing’s throat before she could stifle it. The sound was not one of derision but anger at the intruding wolf and of sympathy cast through the wry filter of the eventful and not entirely pleasant day. The gray she-cat gritted her teeth as a pang of guilt flashed through her; frustrated as she might be, there was no reason to let the senseless irritation prickling across her pelt find an unintended mark in her clanmates. “Me, too,” she replied, smoothing her words. “Perhaps we’ll get lucky, and all of this will be no more than a wild goose chase.” She cracked an exasperated smile. “It must be a strange day if we’re wishing for a fruitless hunt.”

(I'm so sorry for disappearing!! I've been studying for finals all weekend >~< Hopefully I'll be more active this week, but if not, my last exam is Friday, so my activity should definitely go back to normal after that)
"That's all we can hope for, really," Ashwing replied, nodding in solemn agreement. "Another day of safety." A moment later, she shook her head sharply, shocked by her own forwardness in letting such a grim comment slip out of her mouth. It was a deputy's duty, she believed—any warrior's duty, really, though as always, the diligent she-cat placed a extra share of the responsibility squarely on her own shoulders—to foster the delicate spark of optimism that in the chilly climate often felt utterly vital to keeping the clan moving. Not that she always succeeded. Still, Ashwing lifted her tail a fraction higher, setting her shoulders with a determination that was at least as much for herself as for her companions. "Handling this wolf, though, might win us plenty. It will be nice to take the young apprentices out exploring without concern; I know Sparrowpaw could use the practice, and I'm sure the kits will be begging to get out of camp come greenleaf." Despite herself, the ghost of a smile flitted across her muzzle at the thought.

Intrigued, Ashwing tossed the idea about in her mind. Though she had never seen a wolf for herself, anything of the size and power that Daisytail was describing must possess ample fur, and the pelt would certainly have to be thick enough to keep the creature warm in bitter leafbares. Provided that they could find a way to take down the creature... “That sounds like an excellent idea!” She remarked with genuine enthusiasm. “I’m sure Graymoon will be thrilled to hear it! Did your family encounter many wolves?” She added curiously.

Ashcloud had been quietly listening to the conversation of the two cats, perhaps finding interest in the discussion despite his own lack of interest in running into a wolf himself. However, he could help his fur standing on end at the sound of howling piercing his ears, though a coward he was not by any means. It was unfortunate that the wolf still remained nearby, and he dreaded the thought of it reaching their campsite, even so he couldn't help wondering how truly comfortable wolf fur could be. It sounded oddly inviting, but he wasn't so sure it sounded inviting enough to chase one down for. Nevertheless, he remained silent, waiting for the Deputy's orders on what they were to do, his golden eyes resting on her form ahead of him.

Ashwing felt her ears prickle uncomfortably as they were met with the mournful howl that could only belong to the object of their hunt, and she suppressed the shudder that threatened to creep along her spine. "Daisytail is right," she decided after a moment's consideration, telling herself firmly that it was practicality and not that lingering discomfort driving her decision. And, in fact, the decision to retreat was the logical one; the little patrol had already surpassed what they had set out to achieve. "We've made great progess in tracking it this far," she added, drawing herself up with a quick glance between her clanmates. "I think we should all go report to Greymoon; I'm sure she'll want to hear each of your accounts as well."

Ashwing huffed a slight laugh under her breath, already feeling the tenseness in her muscles begin to fade as she turned back down the path in the opposite direction. Still, she kept herself on high alert, having learned through her days as a warrior that it always served one well to keep a bit of a guard up. “Thank you two for joining me,” she added, glancing back and adjusting her speed to match pace more closely with her pair of clanmates. “I’m sure the whole clan will be grateful. Once we—and Greymoon, of course—figure out how to make the announcement.” Though her gratitude was genuine, a deeper message was woven through the casual phrase: don’t go spreading around news of a wolf just yet.

Ashwing shrugged. “I haven’t decided yet,” she admitted, adjusting her pace to keep within conversational distance of her companions as she felt her legs begin to hasten toward camp once again. “Both of you are welcome, of course—you have more experience than most of the clan with the situation at this point. I’d like to bring at least five warriors in all just to be cautious, and maybe one of the older apprentices.” The she-cat shook her head; she’d never enjoyed sending the apprentices into battle, no matter how eagerly they pleaded. Still, she knew that the future warriors needed every experience that they could get.

“It would send every bit of prey right back into their dens,” Ashwing remarked with a grimace. “Just when they’ve started to come out again. Not to mention that I’d hoped we were finally free from this cold!” The deputy fluffed her pelt grumpily, a wry smile flickering across her muzzle. Though she kept her tone playfully perturbed, a corner of her mind was already beginning to process through the lists of preparations and extra patrols that would no doubt be needed if a blizzard really were on the horizon. Just what we need: one more problem to deal with. But no sense worrying about that, she corrected herself firmly. “Hopefully the wolf will like the snow even less than we do.”
