IntroductionPain.
Agony.
Blood pounded in his ears, nearly drowning out all of the sounds around him. His heartbeat pounded like a distant drum, thudding somewhere deep inside his chest. He couldn't breathe, couldn't think past the pain. Bleary eyes stared into the sky, struggling to focus. The tree canopy above him was a blurred green, the leaves blending into a shadowy mass. The pain pulsed within him, thrashing about like a living thing. Or was it alive? He wouldn't have been surprised. It seemed to taunt him, threatening to drive him into unconsciousness. For a time, he tried to stay awake, intuitively knowing that if he gave into the darkness, he likely wouldn't wake again.
The trees above him danced into view; the short, raspy breaths panting between his teeth cut past the pounding of his heart. His tongue was swollen, and the metallic tang of blood filled his mouth; he must've bitten his tongue at some point. He couldn't remember when. It was hard to swallow, hard to breathe. Saliva pooled in his mouth as he struggled to fight past the pain; his stomach rolled, threatening to empty itself. He clamped his jaw as hard as he could, grinding his teeth. For a time, he managed to hold out. He focused on one breath at a time, focused on the trees above.
Inevitably, though, the world began to go gray and shift from focused to blurred. The pain he'd pushed away tore down his wall, surging to the forefront. He gasped, gurgling softly. The silence reached up to grasp him; its claws wrapped around him, and he fell into a pillow of darkness. Everything else drifted away like ash on the wind.
A crack cut through the shadows, pulling him from the edge of death's embrace. He shot awake, instantly aware of the agony that throbbed in every cell, every sinew, every tissue of his body. He panted, breath rasping out from between his teeth. What had happened? He blinked his eyes open, studying the treas above him. It all came rushing back to him. The hike; it had gone well for a little while. The sun had been shining, the air was warm; he didn't remember the path being particularly treacherous.
Ah. Now he remembered; a hidden slick part on the trail. His left foot had slipped and sent him tumbling down the mountain. How he'd survived the fall, he couldn't guess. He took a sharp, deep breath and went to study the extent of the damage to his body. His legs were clearly broken, twisted at unnatural angles. He would've guessed that his back was broken, but the level of pain assaumting him was too intense. Before he could inspect anything else, another crack in the distance drew his attention.
The hairs on his arms rose, and the animal hindbrain within him shuddered. Instinctively he knew danger was lurking. He turned his head, and met the slitted yellow gaze of a massive beast.
It prowled forward from the shadow of the tree line; a wolf. It must've smelled his blood, he realized, and it had come to investigate. The beast was huge - the largest wolf he'd ever seen. Its yellows eyes glowed with a wild intelligence as it studied him. It took another step forward, ears swiveling back to pin down against its skull. He stared at it, and watched it bunch its muscles.
He watched the giant black wolf leap towards him, jaws slacking open to reveal brilliant white fangs.
He cried out as the wolf's teeth sank to the bone in his shoulders. With a wild yell, he tried to fight the wolf off; it released him, circled back around, and lunged again. Its teeth cut through his stomach with little ease. The breath whooshed out of him at the pain. The wolf released him again, pacing back and forth as it watched him; his blood coated the beast's teeth. He sank into the darkness again, gaze blurring. The wolf opened its mouth in a howl, and something deep in him stirred.
Pack, it told him.
He closed his eyes to the human world, and let the Change swallow him whole.

About the SupernaturalsAmongst the mere mortals that walk the earth prowl the epitome of predators: the werewolves. Appearing human more often than not, they're able to hide in plain sight. When danger lurks and someone dares to threaten the pack, the wolf emerges, and they're able to shift to their second form: that of the mighty wolf, with brilliant white fangs and a ferocity unmatched by anything in the natural world. Werewolves are unique in that they can be born or made; a born werewolf doesn't have to undergo the Change, which is incredibly painful, and can shift at will by the time they're about two. Prior that that, born werewolves will shift between their wolf and human form at random. They'll even shift in utero, making birth dangerous. It's notoriously difficult for a werewolf to conceive, as it is only possible to procreate with one's mate - and even then, a pregnant werewolf is a blessing, as children are rare and cherished.
Werewolves can also be made; to make a werewolf, the wolf's saliva must be introduced into the human's bloodstream, as it is the lycanthrope virus that will Change the human. The virus will bind to the human's DNA, but it often requires more than one bite. Not all humans will survive, as it is said the Change is agonizing until the human finally passes out. More than just the bite is required, though, as the human must be strong enough to withstand, and the werewolf must be strong enough to bind the human to the pack. If both are strong enough, and the human survives the Change, the newly changed werewolf will be likely be at odds with their wolf for a time, until they both accept each other. Very rarely, a Changed wolf will acquire a gift - these are usually defensive or passive in nature. For example, one might be able to shift instantly. Another might be incredibly fast. It's nearly unheard of for a Changed wolf to have an offensive gift, but it is possible. It is against all werewolf laws to turn a human against their will; the only situation in which it is acceptable is to save someone's life.
For the most part, learning to shift on command is difficult. The shift is painful for a time, until one becomes accustomed to it. Only the oldest, most experienced wolves - unless they're gifted - are usually able to shift instantly. For others, it takes up to a minute.
A werewolf is only able to procreate with their mate, but there isn't necessarily the idea of one fated mate. Two werewolves - or even a werewolf and a human, though this is much more uncommon - that are compatible are able to enter into a mate bond, linking one's thoughts to the other. A mate is able to sense the other's general well-being and can use the bond to track each other. The mate bond is created during a special ceremony, more often than not done during the full moon (although werewolves are not bound by the full moon and can shift on command) as it is believed that the full moon holds the most magic.
Naturally, the wolves have an enemy amongst the predators. There are three supernatural races: the werewolves, the witches, and the vampires. Of them all, perhaps the vampires are those who tend towards the darker aspects of life most often. Vampires are created when a human is given the blood of a vampire. They usually live in nests, and will find blood in the seedier places of town: the night clubs, the bars, those sort of places. As werewolves see themselves as the guardians of humanity, they're often at odds with the vampire community. Both are bitter rivals, and confrontations often end in bloodshed. Still, the world is not black and white, and there are some vampires that choose a more peaceful life and find sustenance from blood banks and other measures.
The third supernatural race is that of the witches; most closely related to humans, the witches are the shortest lived of the supernaturals, although they tend to live longer. Witches are born with the ability to use magic, although it occurs that a child is born to witch parents without the ability to use magic. Any witch can cast spells; only a few have the capability to heal, or to transmute materials into something else. Some are seers, while others can enhance the magic of fellow witches. Most covens practice white magic and remain neutral between the supernatural world and the human world. Some witches, however, practice a darker magic - black magic, so to speak, often fueled by hate and more intense emotions. It isn't explicitly against witch law to practice black magic, but it is highly frowned upon.

About the PackThe pack is run by a hierarchy, where the alpha sits on top, followed by the second, third, and so forth. While many will claim their place in a pack by fighting, this pack is different. Position is determined by a stare down; the more dominant the wolf, the longer they will hold another wolf's gaze directly. The alpha is the most dominant; the second follows closely behind, and often will assist the alpha in the day-to-day running of the pack. The werewolf world is run by a Council of alphas from around the world.
Below you will find the rankings of the Boulder Pack.
The Alpha: claimed by Ghost
The Second:
The Third:
The Fourth:
The Fifth:

The RulesFor the most part, the werewolves live in peace with the rest of the world. They see themselves as the guardians of the humans, and it is because of this that they sometimes find themselves at odds with the vampires.
There are only a few rules by which the werewolves live:
1. Do not reveal your existence to the humans. To do so will result in death. 2. Do not Change a human against their will. Only humans close to death may be Changed, to save their life. 3. Do not kill humans recklessly. 4. Guard the humans against any who would do them harm. 5. Respect the pack; do nothing that would bring the pack to harm. 6. Obey the alpha. Respect your place.
---
For the roleplay, there will be a few rules. Everyone hates them (myself included) but they're necessary to establish a foundation.
β Follow all of wcrp forums, obviously. You know this already, though.
β Please don't roleplay as someone else's character without their permission. In other words, don't like powerplay and god-mod, just so we're sure you're giving the other person a chance to respond.
β Ask me, please, before starting any major events that will effect the whole role-play. I'm more than willing to plot with you, so PM me if you have any ideas!
β Try to keep the genders as even as possible. You can have one or two more of each gender, but keep in mind that it makes other people feel obligated to balance you out, which isn't much fun for them.
β Sexualities other than heterosexual are welcome.
β Try to be realistic! Yes, this is a supernatural role-play, but there are limits on that. No characters with powers or purple eyes or anything.
β Ask other people before making your character either their relation or mate.
β Let me know if you're going to be gone for an extended period of time, just so we know not to involve your characters in any roles that are immediately important.
β Remember that, for the most part, werewolves and vampires don't like each other. There are exceptions to this, but it's the most common way the two interact.
β Lastly, this is a semi-literate to advanced roleplay. Responses should be no shorter than a good paragraph or two, but should preferably be longer. It's understandable in dialogue, however, to have slightly shorter responses so long as both parties consent.

The PlotThe plot of this role-play will revolve mainly around one pack - the Boulder Pack of Colorado, led by Leto. The vampires in nearby Boulder have been stirring up trouble; humans have gone missing, and are later found dead or never found at all. There's also rumors going around of a group of rogues banding together, Changing humans against their will to expand their pack. Unbeknownst to Leto and his pack, the rogues have entered in an alliance with the vampires, in an attempt to wipe out the werewolves who don't follow their ideals for good.
Leto and his pack will have a fight on their hands, if they're to stick to the age-old duty of guarding the humans.
Other plots will be added as the role-play progresses!

Role-play InformationThis role-play will take place in Boulder, Colorado.
"Boulder is a small to mid sized city in the foothills of Colorado. It lies beneath the dramatic "flat iron" mountains, behind which is the vast wilderness for which the state is famous. The city of Boulder, which is perhaps best known for its university, is host to a diverse population. Its urban centers offer a range of career opportunities for its residents. Meanwhile, it is only a short drive to the nearest ski resorts and hiking destinations. To the east lie the plains of Colorado, and to the west, the powerful ranges which can make any person feel small. Common hang outs include Pearl Street (an outdoor mall with stores, restaurants, and booths), the Hill (an area of town popular with the university students), and The Hotel Boulderado (an Victorian-style hotel with a basement bar and an atrium lobby). This blend of city and mountain town make it an appealing location for more than just ski-bums." - written by Glow

I like the Colorado idea, but where in Colorado? Being from Colorado I can think of one, maybe two places that could work.
Colorado Springs and around it, since its right up next to the mountains and all that, and Boulder, because its basically IN the mountains.

Probably. I mean, Colorado Springs is huge, but I agree, Boulder would be a better bet -- famous but not crowded, good jobs, and far enough into the mountains to be a good spot for a pack to settle.

Hm... I mean, maybe its uncommon? and only like, basic gifts? and its more rare to have more powerful gifts for changed too. But nothing really... threatening. Yaknow?
