Stephen scrunched up his face, thinking furiously. “Well, you obviously don’t wanna go outside… ugh, sorry, that was a dumb thing to say. Ummmm, we can watch movies, you could eat some actually good food for once, I have video games, some books…” he sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Or you could just sleep. There’s a spare bed in my room and I can’t sleep on the couch.”

Lucas bit his lower lip as he considered his options. Outside sounded like a great idea until he considered his current situation. He was hurt and would have difficulty defending himself, so it was better to stay inside despite his limited escape options. “I think our definitions of good food are pretty different,” he joked. “Well, we both know I don’t need that much sleep.” Besides, it gives everyone a chance to try sneak up on me and kill me. “I’d probably suck at video games and reading really isn’t my thing, so I guess that leaves movies. Do you have any that aren’t incredibly gory and aren’t about innocent people being hunted or targeted?”

“Well, people change over time,” Lucas said with a shrug. He sure as hell wasn’t the same person he had been as a kid, and he doubted that Stephen was the exact same person. “Besides, we were kids the last time we saw each other. Kids don’t usually watch scary movies.” If only he could be a kid again. He would be with his family and the law wouldn’t have passed. “Don’t go there,” he mumbled to himself. This wasn’t the time to break down and get emotional. “With my luck, I won’t recognize most of them,” the vampire mumbled as he got off the couch to look at the DVDs by the TV, hoping to distract himself. He pulled a few off the top of the stack to look through them, but he didn’t recognize all of the titles.

Lucas tuned out Stephen’s mumbling as he looked through the DVDs, and he only looked over at the man when he asked him a question. “I haven’t,” he said a bit sadly as he set a few DVDs down on the floor. “I don’t recognize most of these titles, and I don’t want to watch the ones I do recognize.” None of them seemed to be the sort of movie where he could forget about all the crap he had been through for an hour and a half or two hours. “It doesn’t help that I lost a lot of time because I had to run for my life. Maybe you should pick.”

“I don’t want to be left here alone,” Lucas said firmly, his tone daring Stephen to try do otherwise. “I’m in a town I’ve never been to before and an apartment that’s making me feel closed in while I’m pretty hurt, and I’m certain the only reason I’m not freaking the hell out is because I’m with someone who I was friends with when I was a kid.” There was no way he would have agreed to this if the person helping him hadn’t been someone familiar. Plus, if he was going to be left alone, he preferred to be alone in a place he could easily escape from. “We don’t have to watch a DVD. Maybe there’s something on TV.” As a kid, he hadn’t been this difficult, but he wasn’t a kid anymore, and there were some things he had to be firm about.

That first night, the boys had finally found a movie that they both wanted to watch, and Lucas had fallen asleep on the couch during the first half hour. His many near-sleepless nights finally caught up with him, but he hadn’t slept peacefully. He had woken up multiple times during the night because of nightmares, and he was only ever asleep for an hour or two at a time. It hadn’t gotten any better over the next few days. In fact, he started refusing to sleep during the night while Stephen was asleep and during the day when he was alone. The vampire was still afraid that someone might break into the apartment while he was asleep, and he felt safest while Stephen was there and awake. Even though the two had been friends as kids, so much had changed, and Lucas found that there were so many things he simply couldn’t talk about. After a few days, there was something that was bothering him. "You know, I'm going to need something to drink soon." His thirst was beginning to become unbearable, but he was still in control of himself.

All Lucas did was nod slightly to confirm that Stephen was correct about what he needed to do. He rubbed at his eyes, knowing that his sleep habits were terrible. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much he could do about that. Between the nightmares and the constant fear of getting caught, he didn’t sleep well, and the dark circles under his eyes had become something he expected to see when he looked in the mirror. “I’d rather not do that. My parents didn’t raise me like that.” That was the most he had said about his family the entire time he had stayed with Stephen. “Besides, even if they don’t have family and friends, there will still be an investigation, and it’s pretty hard to disguise the mark I’d leave. Plus, people would panic and it would cause a mess that would make things worse for the both of us.” If it was discovered that a vampire had killed someone, the police would increase their searches for that vampire until it was either caught and killed or chased out of town. “Is there any way you can get your hands on some animal blood? There might be a few people who are willing to help.” If not, he was screwed and would have to leave.

“Might help doesn’t sound very promising,” Lucas mumbled as he pushed a hand through his hair. Even so, he didn’t have many other options. This might be the only way he could stick around a little bit more and let his knee continue to heal. “It’ll probably be better if I go with you. I’m the better fighter and the better liar.” The vampire had no problem lying to convince others that he had forced Stephen into helping him. If they were caught, the lie made it less likely that his friend would be punished for helping him.

Lucas leaned back in the seat as he played with the hem of his hoodie. He would have been content to spend the whole ride in silence because there wasn't anything that he wanted to say. He pulled the hood up and turned to look out the window as he let out a sigh. "I guess so," he answered quietly. "It's no secret that I haven't slept well, but it's been like that for a while. I don't have anyone to watch my back, so it's not smart to sleep for more than an hour or two at a time. It isn't healthy, but it's keeping me alive." As for the nightmares, he didn't want to explain them. It hurt to think about them, and some of them were connected to some of the difficult choices he had had to make. He hadn't killed anyone for the hell of it, but when it came to a self-defense killing, he felt sick thinking about it. "And a lot of the times, I'm surrounded by trees and nature so I usually don't have to worry about hurting someone. But I can't survive out there. My clothes get ripped and my shoes get worn, so I have to venture into towns. That's when I usually run into trouble."

I'm not sure you'd be able to do anything for me, Lucas thought as he turned his head to look out the window. After all, he didn't want to tell Stephen about some of the things he had been through because he didn't want to burden his friend. "I'm not sure," the vampire said quietly as he thought. Any large animal was usually enough to keep his thirst at bay for about ten days, but he didn't know how much blood was in the animal's body. "For now, I guess I'd need a gallon or two, especially with my knee still healing." He pulled the hood on his jacket down so he looked a little less suspicious, though anyone would be able to tell what he was just by looking at him. "I just hope that he'll be able to help."
