I thought Clans based on goddamn playing cards was a good idea at 2 am. Not sure about it now, but hey it’s whatever
The Clans here are known as Suits. There are 4 suits (Clubs, Diamonds, Spades, and Hearts), each with a ruler known as a King/Queen, their spouse (given the same appropriate title), a Jack, and an Ace.
The King/Queen is the highest authority, equivalent to the Clan leader. They are usually referred to only as their title by the other suits (Queen of Diamonds, King of Hearts, etc.) They also have their spouse, who will also be called a King or Queen (this has led to confusion over the years of cats with same-sex partners, given that means there’d be two Queens of Spades). They have less power than their ruling spouses, but they often weigh in on important matters. Sometimes (but very rarely), this role can also double as the Jack. The Jack is equivalent to the Clan deputy, being the other second-in-command and the “organizer” of the suit. And then there’s the Ace, equivalent to the medicine cat. Aces are commonly associated with death, as they prepare the body for burial and they are said to “speak with the dead” by connecting to their spirits when they “go back to the earth”. Aces are usually the only cats that can communicate to the dead besides the spirits known as Jokers. Aces are also known for being very cunning, and intelligence and wit are esteemed by them. “Normal” cats are typically referred to by their amount of symbols (see below). Apprentices are simply known as Deuceys. (For example, a cat of the Diamonds suit with three symbols is called a Three of Diamonds.) Each suit has a universal symbol that is given to cats when they complete good deeds (Diamonds red pointy leaves, Spades black round leaves, Hearts flowers from their Bleeding Heart bushes, and Clubs clovers). These are kept on necklaces that every cat wears. The first one is always given when a cat is born, the second when they are apprenticed, and all others vary wildly based on the ruler and the individual cat. They can also be taken away if that cat has performed some kind of disgrace. At least ten of these must be acquired for a cat to be able to advance to Jack. Aces only ever get one at their birth, as they have no time to deal with material objects. Jokers are the evil beings equivalent to the Dark Forest (although they are much different). When a cat dies, it is usually believed to go back into the earth, as the Suits all believe nature is a cycle of spirits. This is except for the Jokers, who are too evil to go back to the earth. They instead become shapeshifting spirits constantly out to deceive the Suits for their pleasure. However, they can be killed a second time, and their malevolent spirit then goes to the earth to create more evil cats. Jokers have always been led by a pair of cats, although that pair has changed over time due to having been killed a second time. The suit of Spades is commonly associated with death, due to the reputation of their first leader. In reality, they are one of the more peaceful Suits, but they are still very deadly when provoked too far. Because of this, the Ace of Spades is agreed to have the closest relationship to the dead of all, and they tend to rule over the other Aces when all four (and their Deuceys/apprentices) are together. The Diamonds are the most belligerent of the Suits. Their first King, a tom named Battleaxe, set this in stone. The Kings of Hearts have a reputation for going mad during their reigns- it has happened frequently, starting with the very first King of Hearts. How or why this is, nobody knows. This is often used to mock the suit of hearts by other suits. The Clubs tend to be quieter and less ambitious than the other three suits. They were also the first to find out how plants can heal cats. Clan naming is not in play here. There is not much of a naming system for the cats, but they generally keep their names the same their entire lives. (Think more like rogue naming.) why did i think this a good idea again

electric boogaloo: a second post of this godawful idea
the first ruler of the Hearts was Alexander, a tom known for his excessive emotion (typical of the Hearts suit) and his quickness to paranoia. He slowly grew worse and worse in health throughout his reign, until believing that his own suit was about to kill him, he ran off a cliff and was impaled by a large rock. He was the first ruler to die, and the one who set the reputation for the Kings of Hearts to go mad. the first ruler of the Spades was Leaf, a black molly. Leaf lived the longest of the original four rulers, dying of old age. She was known for her stoicism and wry tongue, and it was believed for the longest time that she had somehow caused the death of all of the thee original leaders. This has since been decided as false, but it has heavily contributed to the correlation between the suit of Spades and death. Acorn Flower was the quiet, gentle leader of the Clubs, a patient pale tabby molly who was like a mother to her suit. She was the one who realized that herbs can heal cats, which was a discovery that quickly spread to the other suits. She was the second ruler to die after Alexander from a tumor. Finally, Battleaxe was the first ruler of the Diamonds, and he established their rather military nature. He was commanding, terrifying, yet fatherly in a way, and he is universally beloved by the suit of Diamonds. He was the third to die after Alexander and Acorn Flower, and true to his nature he died in a battle that he had started in the first place. The history of the Aces hasn’t been as clear. It is known that the first Ace was of the Spades suit, an elderly molly named Old Frizzle, but besides that not much is known about it besides what the Aces have told each other. They are naturally secretive like this. The idea of having a Jack was set after Alexander died- originally, the spouse was to inherit the role, but Alexander’s Queen Brindle had died a while ago. After this, a cat known as Knave inherited the role due to the persistence of a young tom named Jack and so the other rulers adapted Jacks as their inheritors to the throne in his honor. Battleaxe was the only leader to actually carry out a King-like dynasty: he and his descendants ruled the throne up until the death of his great-grandson. To this day, Battleaxe blood is heavily valued in the Suit of Diamonds.

the third one
Each Suit values something different, which factors into its overall personality. Hearts: Morale and Boldness (think a more impulsive ThunderClan made mostly of Maine Coons and other large cats) Diamonds: Strength and Tradition (think ShadowClan, but with the fighting power and stability of ThunderClan) Spades: Wit and Flexibility (Think RiverClan with ShadowClan’s touch of darkness and wit, or even better a Ravenclaw/Slytherin hybrid) Clubs: Kindness and Workmanship (basically Hufflepuff who are we kidding)
The roleplay starts in a time of unrest of the Suits. The Queen of Hearts has just died, passing her leadership onto her son and Jack Flare. Flare is a good cat, but there’s one issue: he only has five symbols where ten are needed to become a Jack in the first place. The decision to make him King sparks unrest in all four suits, especially since Flare himself is rather inexperienced at leadership and only chosen for being the Queen’s son. Meanwhile, the Queen of Clubs (name undecided), old but famously strict despite being of the usually peaceful Clubs suit, is hard-pressed to find the murderer of her Ace- especially as since there was no deucey to take over the job, leaving the Suit without one of its mos essential parts. All cats in the Suit Of Clubs are under suspicion, as well as some cats from the other Suits (specifically the Suit of Hearts, which has been at war with the Suit of Clubs for a long time by the start of the roleplay). The Suit of Spades is still adjusting to its new King, (name undecided), who is vastly different in tone than their older one- and who has recently made the questionable choice to exile the well-liked Jack for a reason that seems rather futile. In the Diamonds Suit, the Queen and Jack have both just died (with the King being dead long before)- leaving the Suit leaderless, and cats positioned to fight each other to the top (despite the insisting of its own Ace). Suit turns against suit, and the chaos soon leads to what could possibly be the death of the world of the Suits...

Other various things: The group of cats mainly in charge of the suit (king(s), queen(s), jack, and ace) are known as the Court. Deuceys are known as deuceys for having 2 symbols collected. Ace deuceys are often jokingly referred to as “acey-deuceys”. They actually despise this nickname, but they tend to enjoy it when they get older and become the mentor. A pair of aces is considered bad luck, as it is talking too much with the souls of the dead. This is why all ace deuceys remain deuceys until either they or their mentor dies. All four aces combined are the highest power in all the Suits- except if all other members of the court oppose them. The equivalent of Gatherings here are Tables. At a Table, each ruling King or Queen brings a gift representing their Suit, placed in the middle of the area. Whichever suit is agreed to be looking the best compared to their fellow Suits gets all of these gifts as a showing of submission. It is common for the Kings and Queens to say how great their Suit is going just to accumulate these prizes and assume dominance over the other three. This is known as bluffing, and opinions on it vary wildly.
these are all based on real playing card trivia and lore. took a while to gather it all tho

hey remember this terrible idea? it's back feat. "it's embarassing how long i've thought about this" The forest is divided into two main areas, based on the two hiking trails within: -The Red Trail covers the north territories (Hearts and Diamonds). -The Black Trail covers the Southern Territories (Spades and Clubs).
The Suit of Hearts lives in a pine territory, with many rocky rivers and wavepools scattered throughout. The territory is known for being the northernmost territory, and is the quickest to get cold; which is why the Hearts suit has adapted thick pelts. Pine needles on the forest floor and in the treetops can sting one if they aren’t prepared for it, so thick paw pads have also evolved in the Hearts suit. This gives the Suit of Hearts their unique tactical advantage: not much terrain is too rocky or spiky for them, and they are very versatile, even adapting to know how to swim. Water is sacred to the Hearts suit- it is stalwart and steady, able to seep through even the toughest of rocks and carve the world around it. The average Hearts cat is very large- think Norwegian Forest Cat, with long fur that bunches at the neck and claws. Usually tabbies.
Jut to their southwest down the trail lies the Suit of Diamonds. They have a rather large territory consisting of oak and maple forest; with soft earth below. The Suit of Diamonds have extra sharp claws not just for their notoriously bloody battles, but to dig through the earth- below the Diamonds suit lies a complicated tunnel of pathways. This tunnel is maintained regularly and often used as a quick way to get from point A to point B in the large territory. It also is used as a sneak hiding place- the footsteps of intruders can be heard in this tunnel, so the Suit of Diamonds cats can always know when invaders are in their territory and attack them quickly. Earth is sacred to the Diamonds cats- they believe all life comes from it and goes to it, and that it must be respected just as much as their Leader. The Diamonds suit is the most religious suit in this way. They are average-sized, with short fur, long claws, and long fangs. Usually have sleek fur that is easy to groom and maintain and have bright coat colors that are rather flashy. Think American Shorthair.
The paths are intersected by what is referred to as the Roundtable, a circular area completely barren of trees and rocks except for the four natural pillars of granite on each side. This is where Gatherings, known as Tables for the name of the area, commence.
The southernmost territory is the Suit of Clubs, an open, flowery, hilly area with lots of grasses and clovers. The dens are rocky cavities embedded in the side of some of these hills. The area is large, but mostly uninhabited and not patrolled frequently, except in a few key areas- this is because the Suit of Clubs land receives fires often (which is why the Suit is almost always together other than the twice-a-day patrol- this way they can escape as one), and they often devastate the land. The other Suits are clueless as to why the Suit stays in the flammable grasses- the answer is because the fires are respected and even anticipated by the Suit, as the fires symbolize death and rebirth to them. The land always grows back stronger than before after a fire hits. Thus, fires are sacred to the Suit of Clubs. The fires also give the Clubs their own tactical strength- they are peaceful, but notoriously hardy, and have a very quick reaction time due to often having to evade the fires. The Suit of Clubs cats vary the most, as it is the most likely to take in outsiders. However, they do have a standard: round, but agile, with stumpy tails. Think Manx.
The Suit of Spades has one of the smaller territories- it is mostly underground in a series of dark chambers and caves, with water often pooling within, known affectionately as the Domuhollow (home hollow). The eyes of the Spade cats are well-adapted to this, giving them the best eyesight, and heightening their other senses- as even with their good eyes they cannot fully tell where to go without sound, smell, and touch. (This is also their primary tactical advantage.) These caverns actually stretch into overlapping territory with the Diamonds and Clubs, but since they are well underground even the Diamonds’ tunnels this is really only known by themselves. However, the small caverns lack much air, and it is not uncommon for Spade cats to suffocate in the deepest caverns- and thus air is sacred to the Spades. It represents to them freedom, change, and the cycle of life and death (as they equal it with the cycle of breathing in and out). Out of the Suits, spades cats are the smallest of the four. Usually very scrawny and thin, with pointed tails, dark pelts, and eyes that practically bulge out of their heads. Think Cornish Rex.

and thus the cycle of worldbuilding continues -Each Suit has a different way of storytelling. Diamonds stories tend to be bloody and crude, often with divine intervention by spirits and the earth involved. Hearts stories are boasting tall tales of almighty warriors. Clubs cats tend to have a folksy, peaceful vibe to their stories, with mythical animals and magic (or at least a rudimentary understanding of it) usually appearing. And finally, the Spades are legendary among the Suits for their great storytelling- their stories are usually fables that teach lessons (specifically ones for kits) but are witty and overwhelmingly dark. -Clubs and Spades cats tends to be more artsy than the Hearts and Diamonds cats. They have a crude understanding of music (ex. If they find a reed that hums in the wind they may take it and use it for festivals and celebrations) and dancing (ex. During celebrations they often leap around and step in place like kittens out of joy). However, Diamonds cats are more showy and value material objects (specifically stones+plants) more (seeing as they come from the earth, their sacred element) and keep more material objects, while Clubs cats usually collect few things and Spades cats usually just bury everything they find after they feel it has been properly used. -Hearts cats often use the phrase “[to] shoot the moon” to mean a monumental task. A “moonshooter” is any cat who has performed such a task. “Shooting the moon” was known as a common phrase in the area, but it really sparked in usage when the first Queen of Spades managed to keep her Suit alive in the hollows (which Hearts cats in particular thought was impossible). Even now, she is commonly referred to in almost all suits (especially in Hearts) as The Moonshooter. Ironically, she’s almost never called this by Spades cats, as they see no use in titles (which is also why they’re the only Suit that most often refers to their King/Queen as their real name and not as their title.) -Unlike clan gatherings, suit tables are full of arguing. Diamonds cats tend to be especially abrasive. Clubs cats are, while usually peaceful, known to get rowdy at Tables due to usually celebrating and having too many herbs before schlepping off to the Table. Spades cats just like to sit back and laugh at the sheer absurdity of it all.

tried to come up with a description of the jokers (put it under a spoiler because it's slightly disturbing, i mean they're basically skeletons with skin and teeth in their throats who use hides of dead animals to lure prey so) So what is a Joker? Jokers are malevolent spirits of cats, rejected from going back into the earth due to their evil deeds in life. They have no muscles and usually little fat under their skin, making it very clear to see their bone structure from underneath their translucent skin and pelts. Their tails and heads are reduced to nothing but bone, although their eyes are still visible- although their eyes look more like projected beams of light than eyes. Their throats are lined with the teeth and bones of the animals they have eaten (this sores their throat, resulting in their call sounding like the laughter only brought on by mental breakdown), and since their skin is translucent one can see a few of their organs. If one looks deep into the eyes of a Joker for a certain amount of time, they see a startling vision of their own death- and things, worse things, that often reduce them to stuttering messes for up to the rest of their life. Jokers tend to be either in massive packs or (more commonly) on their own. They have no memory of ever being feline, and will never regain that memory- and they are usually nameless, only referring to each other by description. So, why do Jokers have their name? It stems from how they survive and sustain as spirits. To keep themselves 'alive' in a sense they must of course eat- but once they kill and eat an animal, they will use its hide to shapeshift into it. Their finest delicacies are feline- they will often approach a friend of the cat they have eaten while transformed as their recent meal to lure it into following them. This "joke", combined with their hyena-like sound caused by the teeth stuck in their throats, gives them their name. Jokers are very gluttonous beasts. They can eat the amount of meat it takes to feed a Suit in a week in only about a couple of days. They will also eat anything without hesitation- the only thing they cannot consume is each other. Jokers have a hierarchy just like the Suits- but it is different. The two most crafty cats- these are easy to tell by, given they will be plumper than kittypets from their successful catches- lead over all the others. There's a code, although admittedly not much of one, but it is undecipherable as to what it is, as Jokers communicate with different sounds than Suit cats and therefore cannot be understood unless in disguise. Their behavior seems almost cultish towards their leaders- many jokers have been observed cutting their catches into pieces so it can be divided evenly among them and one of the two leaders. Aces are the only cats who speak of them to each other. They are very hushed about it, and shudder when a cat is described as missing but never found- for they know very well why. The Aces wish they could keep it under wraps, to not tell the other cats about these horrible monsters that lurk in the shadows...
