.Introduction. Although this roleplay draws elements from the book and game called The Witcher, please do not think that you have to be familiar with that material in order to join. So stick around! The story and the characters are all completely different and there will be no expectation for accuracy to the material except for those elements which I will explain.
Anyway! The story takes place in a fantasy world, similar to our own around the time of the mid to late thirteenth century. I will explain the map and territories a little more in the future, but if you visualize a vast kingdom-type world, you get the picture. What makes it different from our world, of course, is that it is inhabited by supernatural things of many kinds. The majority of the population is human, but among them are the elves and the dwarves (although they are often demonized by society). There are also mages and sorceresses, who are born with a talent for magic, although they are also vilified by the government and are often forced to live in hiding. More importantly, however, there are monsters. Vampires, werewolves, ghouls, wraiths, griffins, harpies, trolls, etc. They run rampant particularly in the wilds and in the farm lands where the poor are unable to defend themselves.
Meanwhile the country is fractured by several political groups of power, all of whom are more interested in accumulating wealth than in providing the help their people need.
So here is where the witchers come in. These skilled fighters are tasked with ridding the world of all things monstrous. Their society is a tight knit one, for very few survive the necessary trials to join their ranks. In our tale, a new and promising generation has risen, promising to strengthen the legacy of witchers. Of course the tale wouldn't be interesting without a bit of conflict, but more on that later.
Note:If you aren't familiar with the world, I'd recommend watching a cinematic trailer for Witcher 3 on youtube (although, warning, they're for mature viewers).

.About Witchers.Really the only creature that requires an explanation is the witcher. As mentioned before, they are a small society defined by their skill in combat. There are six different "schools" in the society, each based in a different location. There are also differences in the combat style, training, and armor. There are six schools in total: School of the Wolf, of the Cat, of the Viper, of the Griffin, of the Bear, and of the Manticore. Witchers are all born human, in other words there isn't a "witcher gene". Rather, the society is composed entirely of people who were recruited from a young age. Some are even given to the witchers as apprentices as a reward for some service.
In order to become a true witcher, that child must then undergo "The Trial of the Grasses". This is a ceremony in which they consume concoctions which physically change and mutate their bodies. The trial is extremely dangerous, with only one in ten children surviving. Those who do survive the trials acquire new qualities which better allow them to fulfill their duties. Those qualities include faster reflexes, long life, cat-like eyes, and improved immune systems. They also become stronger and faster in general. One side effect is that all witchers are sterile, hence why they must acquire younger members elsewhere.
Another important result of the trial of grasses is the ability to perform certain magical acts in combat. This includes fire magic, force fields, magic traps, etc. These are also referred to as "signs".
The beginning of the story will take place in Kaer Morhen, which is where the school of the wolf is based. The fortress of Kaer Morhen is high in the mountains, far from most of human society. It was attacked, however, twelve years ago in a massacre that killed many of its members and rendered it weak in comparison to the five other schools. All of the apprentices were killed in the attack, therefore the school is in jeopardy of becoming obsolete.

.About Signs. Much of the combat style of a Witcher revolves around the use of signs, which do a variety of things - create a shield, trap enemies, ignite enemies, or knock enemies back. To cast a sign, the Witcher will utilize a hand gesture, and the intent behind the motion will bring the sign to life.
"...The witchers adapted the spell, making use of the fact that it does not require knowledge of a magical formula — concentration and the hand gesture are enough. That's why they call it a Sign." -- pg. 309, Blood of Elves
There are five signs in total: Aard, Igni, Yrden, Quen, and Axii. Each Sign has its own function and uses. Their usage and design are as follows:
AARD - Aard is a telekinetic wave that can throw back, knock down or stun an opponent. This sign can also be used to destroy obstacles, for example crumbling walls or stacks of barrels. When an enemy is in front of a cliff, casting the sign can throw them beyond the edge.
IGNI - Igni is comprised of a pyrokinetic burst that can repel and ignite opponents, as well as start fires, and can be utilized to ignite gasses emitted from some bombs.
YRDEN - Yrden, when cast, forms a magical trap on the ground that ensnares enemies for a short time.
QUEN - Quen, when cast, forms a protective field around the casting Witcher. It is for this reason that Quen is often referred to as the 'Witcher's Shield.'
AXII - Axii, when cast, triggers a mental wave that casts a hex on the target. The hexed target can be persuaded more easily, or, in some occasions, controlled to fight by the Witcher's side if necessary.

.About the Witcher Schools. As mentioned above, there are six different witcher schools. It is important to note, however, that they are not schools in the sense that they have classrooms and professors and all that. Rather, the schools refer to the practices of the unique fighting styles. A witcher belonging to a school will wear a medallion around their neck depicting the animal representative (wolf, cat, etc). Once a part of a school, a witcher remains in that school no matter where they are living. That being said, each of the six schools has a base, or fort. These forts are where younger witchers are trained and older witchers often return when not off slaying monsters or traipsing around the wilderness.
Note: All witchers are trained to fight with two blades: one steel (for fighting humans) and one silver (for fighting monsters). Also Note: The Trial of the Grasses was created with the male body in mind, so it is particularly difficult for young women to survive the experiment. Therefore there are fewer female witchers than male.
The six different schools are as follows:
School of the Wolf - This school is arguably the most important for the purposes of this RP because some of the action will take place at Kaer Morhen, the base for the school. The school of the wolf is known for a more offensive approach to combat, and the armor is on the lighter side for agility. There was an attack on the fort several years ago which wiped out a good portion of the members. (2/4 slots open)
School of the Cat - This school is larger than that of the wolf. It is said that a good portion of members have elf blood, which has earned it a negative reputation among the other schools. Members are said to be more villainous (arguably) and are known to take jobs that witchers from other schools wouldn't. They are known to use crossbows in their hunt. (6/6 slots open)
School of the Griffin - This school is one of the more isolated of the bunch, and its members are said to be of a higher moral standing. They are well educated and are very selective in the missions they agree to take. Griffin armor is of medium weight. There is an emphasis on sign use and proficiency in this school. (6/6 slots open)
School of the Viper - The Viper School is the smallest, for they were disbanded over the last decade or so. Members are scattered around the map, and some have taken up residence at other witcher forts. The viper school is known to train with shorter swords, often with an innate poison ability in the blades. (3/4 slots open)
School of the Bear - This school is another of the larger in size. Their armor is heavy, due to the emphasis on defensive fighting. They, like the school of the cat, use crossbows as well as the standard steel and silver blades. Their fort is farther north than that of Kaer Morhen. (6/6 slots open)
School of the Manticore - One of the more mysterious schools is often forgotten and has only recently stepped back onto the scene. They are based in the south, and they are known for their strong emphasis on concoction brewing. Their armor is light, made for swift movement and their blades are thin. (6/6 slots open)

.About the Map.
* Kaer Morhen isn't actually on this map, it would be up in the right hand corner past the Gustfields. * There aren't really known locations for the other schools, but if you want me to make them up I can lol * Novigrad is a major city where sorceresses and mages and others are outlawed, other than that it's pretty much a dump. * Oxenfurt is under strict military control * Pretty much everywhere else is moorland, forests, farmland, etc. * This isn't a full map, but for our purposes it'll work fine.

.The Plot. The Main Plot: Young witchers from all of the six schools have been called upon by the wolf school in order to complete a mission. They travel to Kaer Morhen, and for the first time in decades, all the witcher schools are to work together. Their task is as follows: An elven mage has broken the fort of Kaer Morhen and stolen all of the books which contained instructions for concoctions. He also took many of the tools necessary for completing the Trial of the Grasses. Without them, the school of the wolf is no longer able to induct apprentices into their society and they will become obsolete. The young witchers must track the mage down and retrieve the stolen objects. [HINT: It's a TRAP] Meanwhile, monsters are running rampant across the country and now more than ever, there is a need for those strong enough to kill them. The witchers from the six schools must learn to cooperate if they are going to succeed, particularly without the help of their mentors who are forced to engage with a battle against looming dark forces.

.Rules for Joining.Okay, those of you who know me know I hate making rule posts. But they are important, I suppose. So let's get this out of the way.
- Literacy: Now, advanced writing is great, and I would like everyone who joins to try and write in the style of advanced writing. EXCEPT I don't particularly like long posts. Roleplays tend to last longer when the posts are more concise, because it takes less time and energy to produce them. So yeah, I'd say aim for between 250 and 500 words per post, more or less is fine depending on the situation.
- Activity: Again, I'm not really a stickler for this one. I completely understand that people have lives and that interests often change. So I'm not going to hunt you down if you disappear. That said, try to avoid joining if you're not planning on ever (1) doing a form (2) posting a starter (3) plotting with everyone else.
- Characters: One of my biggest pet peeves is when the character list is unbalanced. By that I mean that three or four characters are essentially the same person with different names. Do your best to examine the characters that are in the RP and balance them out according to gender, personality, background, appearance, etc.
- Acceptance: Of course characters of all orientations are welcome in this roleplay. So please be respectful of their writers. On a similar note, keep an open mind when it comes to plotting and ideas. Listen to everyone and give each person a fair chance to provide input.
- Follow the Forum Rules: Clearly c;

.Joining.Well let's get to the fun stuff, shall we?! Here are a few instructions on joining. I've also linked the character page.
How to join:
- Either post here or pm me to be sure there are open slots in the school you would like to place your character. I'm known to be slow about updating the front page, so it's possible that someone has claimed the slot before you.
- Only post once per character on the character page. Just so everything is cohesive.
- PM me or Ghost if you have any questions about coding or the roleplay in general.
- Do your best to finish the form! I know some people hate forms, and those people can have short descriptions. But it is time well spent for your sake and for the sake of the other members.
