First of all, go Harestar! He seems like he'll be a great leader for WindClan. Huh. I still remember the days when people were against him being deputy because he used to be a Dark Forest trainee. Now if only he had better taste in deputies. But hey, maybe Crowfeather will actually turn out to be decent. Maybe. Hopefully. Please don't let Crowfeather be leader.
I have had mixed feelings on Alderheart and Twigpaw for the last three books, and now I think I can finally say I actually like them, or at least as far as this book is concerned anyway. I never really disliked them, but I just found them to be more interesting in DN than in previous books. Alderheart seems to have finally taken after Jayfeather, and Twigpaw is no longer obsessed with her kin. Instead, she's gotten Violetshine's role in trying to find where she belongs, and I liked that, and I'm glad her fickleness has become a bigger issue in this book. I also adored her relationship with Finpaw, and I thought him going to ThunderClan with her was sweet, although it did get a little annoying reading about Twigpaw's feelings for him whenever she had a PoV. And speaking of Finpaw, his mentor better be Berrynose, or so help me. I'm surprised Twigpaw brought up Briarlight and not him when trying to comfort Finpaw.
As for Sandynose, I'm actually not angry with him. He clearly cares for his Clan, but he was right to question Twigpaw's loyalty. As for telling her to stay away from Finpaw, well sometimes people (or cats, in this case), will be nice without actually meaning it, or will sometimes be so nice that it'll be harmful to the other person. I'm guessing either of these cases seems to be what Sandynose was thinking. And it wasn't like he was completely mean to Twigpaw eitherโhe's showed that he does care for her and even defended her when she wanted to go back to ThunderClan.
I love Violetshine's name, although with the character herself, it seemed like she clicked with Hawkwing a bit too quickly. I don't know, I guess I was just expecting a little more awkwardness, but I like her relationship with Hawkwing overall. I also don't blame her for being annoyed with Twigpaw when the latter was asking so many questions, especially when it was about Pebbleshine. While Hawkwing didn't mind, it still may have appeared as insensitive.
But boy, when she said, "Why am I never allowed to be happy?" that just broke my heart right there. Just when she and Twigpaw were about to become warriors together, she leaves for ThunderClan again. Given all she's been through, it's pretty clear that Violetshine has abandonment issues, as well as bits of jealousy too. She's insecure due to her upbringing, and she appears to be slightly jealous of Twigpaw because she's so friendly and cheery all the time. She's lonely, and I hope she can find her own happiness soon.
Which brings me to Tree. Or as I like to call him now, Cole Sear in cat form. As soon as I read the prologue, it was obvious he was the six toed cat. His power is... unexpected, but interesting. A possible romance between him and Violetshine still seems weird to think about, but I found the scene with him trying to flirt and her getting annoyed to be pretty funny.
I also found it funny how no one was surprised about Tigerheart and Dovewing's relationship, and Alderheart thinking that Leafpool being secretive wasn't like her made me laugh too.
I felt so bad for Rowanstar. He's tried to be a good leader, but he never had much ambition for the job anyway. I imagine he was also trying to live up to Blackstar's legacy, especially since ShadowClan hasn't had the best reputation with its leaders. Rowanstar was an apprentice when Tigerstar I took over, so that might have played a part as well. So desperate to keep ShadowClan together after all they've been through that nothing seemed to be going on his favor. Add in the nasty comments Scorchfur has made, and it becomes clear that he's just done with everything. Hopefully he's at peace with StarClan.
It was great to see old faces again, especially Hollyleaf. I was also not expecting to see Zelda and Loki make another appearance, but it was good to see them again. And I know that Barley isn't a Clan cat and thus will live longer, but it's still surprising to see him alive, considering, as far as YS is concerned anyway, he moved into the barn when Runningnose was still an apprentice.
Ivypool and Fernsong's relationship is still sweet, although the whole point of Fernsong's character still doesn't seem to make sense. Despite that, I like how it was addressed that Ivypool didn't want to have kits and Fernsong suggested that he could take care of them.
As for the other pairing of Larksong x Sparkpelt, it seems cute, and I also like how Sparkpelt said she wanted to take things slow with him. As for her opinions on SkyClan, I can see where she's coming from. The Clans had already been through so much, and the appearance of a fifth Clan staying permanently seems like alot to take in. Sparkpelt has never really been shy about voicing her opinions, so this doesn't really surprise me. And this is coming from someone who likes SkyClan. However, I am so glad that she and Alderheart made amends by the end of the book.
I also liked Molewhisker in this book. He seems to be more accepting of SkyClan after spending time with them on the journey, or at least more tolerant.
For the wandering spirit thing, I like the concept, but I just wish they had addressed it sooner. Especially where a certain gray cat whose prefix rhymes with trash is concerned.
For a book titled Darkest Night, there really wasn't that much action. I mean, there was only one death, and it wasn't even one of the older cats or Briarlight. Poor Lilyheart, though. Also, I think this means Briarlight has escaped death eight times now. But anyway, hopefully River of Fire will have more action.
Overall, I personally really liked this book.
