Hi! This is mainly just for me to be able to edit and adjust a clan I’m thinking of making in the near future. Feel free to stop by, check it out and even help out if you want!
Idea : A clan located in California near a small city. A relatively short distance from the beach (a full day to and fro). Face threats from coyotes, dogs, heatwaves, two-legs, the occasional raccoon, and rogues/loners.
Name :
CoyoteClan ~ The fair and loyal
Clan Character :
CoyoteClan values fairness and loyalty, which can usually be seen in the traditions of their clan. They generally are not very fond of outsiders and usually don’t take in very many cats, aside from the rare abandoned kit in their territory. So they tend to be a little wary and it’s often hard to gain their trust but. They also tend to be quite prideful, often looking down on those who don’t live in clans. CoyoteClan is also very reliant on StarClan’s wisdom. They hold their connections to the stars very dearly, believing it is the one thing that keeps them from chaos and falling apart.
Physical appearances vary in the clan. However, a good majority of clan-born cats are short-furred due to the warmer weather and tend to be quite tall. This is not to say there aren’t shorter cats or ones with long-fur. CoyoteClan stems from a diverse group of founders that allows for a wide range of different characteristics.
Territory :
CoyoteClan territory is a mixture of rocky terrain and dense shrubbery. Trees are usually spread fairly far apart and there is a wide range of varying types, including oaks, willows, and California pepper trees. However, the large amounts of bushes and boulders between the trees makes it a bit difficult to navigate for those unfamiliar with the territory. There’s also the potential of stumbling into the occasional cactus that often appear in a few small patches of the territory.
The Creek - On the northern tip of the territory, there is a long creek that runs down the side. It’s the clan’s main source of water. It would separate them from two-legs if it wasn’t for the bridge. The bridge then leads onward to a long dirt path that goes diagonally through CoyoteClan territory.
Poppy Clearing - Near the southern border where the trees begin to clear out and the shrubs become less dense, there is a medium sized clearing surround by boulders and rocks where a large batch of poppies grow. This is especially useful for medicine cats but also known to be a relaxing place. The rocks are even used for sun bathing but can be potentially dangerous as rattlesnakes often make homes in the cracks between rocks.
Fisher’s Fall - A little ways up the eastern side of the creek's shore is a small waterfall. At the base, there are large rocks that cats can utilize as stepping stones as well as using them to fish off of. Frogs and turtles can also occasionally be found here.
Training Willow- Located north-west of the territory, there’s a small break from the trees and shrubs where a large willow tree stands. It’s long stems and leaves act like curtains that drape over it’s surroundings, even stretching over some of the water of the creek nearby. It acts as a perfect place for training.
Hallow Patch - A little distance from Fisher’s Fall, there’s two large, hallowed out tree trunks. These trunks have small holes that let in sunlight and are filled with dirt. Medicine cats often use them as gardens to grow herbs since the are usually protected from weather and are near water.
Camp:
CoyoteClan’s camp is located near the South-east of their territory. Far from the two-legs and their dirt path, their camp is located within two large, draping pepper trees that are surrounded with rocks and a couple thorny bushes.
Leader’s den - The leader’s den is located between the trunk of the second tree and a large boulder. Any gaps between the two have been filled with leafy branches. The den is at the back of the camp.
High Rock - The large boulder next to the leader’s den. It is the highest place in camp, aside from higher tree branches.
Medicine Cat Den - Not far from the leader’s den, the medicine cat den is located diagonal from it on the right side of camp. It’s made mostly out of branches and smaller rocks for stability. Inside there is quite a bit of room, allowing for at least 4 cats to sleep there at a time. A small storage area for herbs has been designed out of small twigs and flat river rocks.
Nursery - Right across from the medicine cat den is the nursery. It’s a large burrow, likely caused by another animal, that is underneath a few roots from the trees. It’s opening is lined with leafy stems to keep out the cold.
Elder Den - Next to the medicine cat den, is the elder’s den. It’s located at the base of the first tree in the camp. It’s made from a small cave that lies under some of the large roots of the tree. It’s made stable from a few rocks and thick branches.
Apprentice Den - Next to the nursery is the apprentice den. Like the medicine cat den, it’s made out of branches and smaller rocks.
Warrior Den - Across from the apprentice den is the warrior den. The den is nearest to the camp entrance. Most of it is made from rocks that have caused a small cave to form.
Outside the Territory :
The Two-leg Place - A fairly large area that stretches out to the sea. Rogues and kittypets often make their homes here. It is separated from the forest by a long, winding road.
Starry Cavern - About a day and a half walk from clan territory, there is a hidden beach cave. This is where cats go to speak with StarClan. Towards the center of the cave is a small pool of water that they must touch in order to speak with the stars. It’s a dangerous journey to get here but also one that is done often.
Backstory :
CoyoteClan territory was once considered a land of tameless wild and was home to a small pack of coyotes. Cats generally kept to the city, afraid of the stories they had heard about others becoming a coyote’s lunch. It wasn’t until a warrior named Bravelight entered the city that things began to change. He came from a far away clan known as RavenClan, claiming it had been destroyed by a wildfire and StarClan had sent him visions of a new land that was full of prey and opportunity for his old Clan to rise. It wasn’t long before he heard about the territory and became determined to take it over.
He traveled around the city and began to gather cats from all walks of life. He taught them everything he knew and encouraged them to stand alongside him in his plan to drive out the coyotes. Many were fearful but they were loyal to Bravelight as he was a natural born leader. Once he had enough cats, he devised a plan and chased out the coyotes. Said plan has been lost over the many years that have since passed. Some say they simple attacked the coyotes, chasing them off with brute strength and numbers, others say they tricked them by leading them to the creek and pushing them down so they got washed away. Whatever it was, Bravelight and his cats emerged victorious despite losing a number of cats along the way.
They settled down in the territory, specifically where the camp is located now. Bravelight decided it was finally time to give his followers proper warrior names as well as introduce them to life as clan cats. He declared it was a new beginning and that the clan would be called CoyoteClan in remembrance of their work. Along with changing the names of others, he changed his own name to Coyotestar.
Though he was the first official leader of the clan, Coyotestar never earned his nine lives, as the clan had yet to find a place to properly speak with StarClan. He continued to lead them effectively until he fell ill with greencough and passed. The leadership then passed on to Sandruffle, a she-cat very dedicated to renewing the traditions taught by Coyotestar. She refused to take the name Sandstar until they found a place to speak with StarClan.
She sent out many patrols that covered territory far from CoyoteClan borders. One patrol eventually reached the beach and discovered the Starry Cavern by accident after seeking shelter from a few two-leg kits. The Clan rejoiced at the discovery and Sandruffle received the first official nine lives, becoming Sandstar.
During Sandstar’s reign, there was a false sense of peace. Since a majority of the cats came from rogues, loners and kitty-pets, they often allowed newcomers into the clan with ease. However, danger came from this as those that weren’t supporters of Coyotestar felt cheated out of territory that should have been theirs. They infiltrated the clan and nearly brought it to destruction. The Clan managed to defeat them but many were lost along the way, including Sandstar who had been on her last life at the time.
Many leaders came and went after Sandstar without much of a change in the clan it’s self. Hawkstar was after her and closed off the clan to outsiders. After him was Toadstar, who created the advisor system in the clan after his deputy turned against him. Then Molestar, Palestar, and Brookstar, who all had a rather uneventful reigns. When Ashstar rose to power, he created the assessment system that allowed for outsiders to join the clan once again. After him was Willowstar, whom was a fairly peaceful leader. It was Willowstar’s successor and the late leader, Mothstar, that began to stir trouble.
Mothstar was a strong warrior and only liked by certain cats. There was a clear darkness in his heart but many chose to ignore it. It was between him and another cat named Firclaw to be elected for leadership after the death of Ashstar. It was an unsettling tie and the clan awaited a message from StarClan. However, before that could take place, Mothshade left in secret to receive his nine lives. When he turned a day later, the clan was in a state of panic and shock. After Moth had left, the clan discovered Firclaw’s body near poppy clearing, leaving them without a leader until the unexpected return of Mothstar. He was welcomed warmly, even by cats who had previously opposed him.
It made him feel powerful and he slowly began to bend the rules. He refused to let other nominate cats for advisors and instead he picked his own. One of them was even the medicine cat, which isn’t allowed due to the potential of advisors becoming leaders. After that, he began to create plans to attack groups of rogues that lived nearby, driven to prove his power as well as expand his control into the city. He also began to promote kits to apprenticeship and apprentices to warriors faster than allowed. Some kits even as young as four moons would begin their training.
Clan cats began to grow fearful as useless fighting erupted often and darkness fell over. They lost many cats and were fearful of Mothstar and those that followed him. Distraught, the clan pleaded with the medicine cat to seek help from StarClan. Reluctant, the medicine cat agreed and journeyed to the Starry Cavern for guidance. When he returned, he declared that StarClan had sent him a vision of a moth sinking in a large lake. All eyes turned to a young warrior named Laketalon.
A plan to overthrow Mothstar was created by a small group of cats. He was on his last life at the time and was lured out into the forest with a patrol who then turned on him and attacked. In the end, he was killed by Laketalon. The patrol returned to the clan and announced Mothstar to have been killed by some angry rogues and that the medicine cat had received a message from StarClan that Laketalon would be the next leader, despite her inexperience. The clan accepted this change, though a few supporters of Mothstar still remained...
Current Story :
Our story starts only a moon after Laketalon has become Lakestar. She’s the youngest leader the Clan has seen but most are appreciative for the change of pace as the new leader is looking to bring about an era of peace. However, darkness still lurks in CoyoteClan. Mothstar didn’t work alone after all and some of his supporters still lurk in the shadows, waiting to strike once more. One of the darkest shadows being CoyoteClan’s own head medicine cat, Gullswoop, the very cat who deemed Lakestar as the next leader.
Born from rogue background, Gullswoop has been planning to destroy the clan for a while now. He planned to destroy it from the inside and nearly found success with promoting Mothstar’s leadership. However, when Mothstar began to attack rogues, Gullswoop realized he made a grave mistake. He then looked to Laketalon, figuring she was respectable enough for others to not question StarClan and also inexperienced enough to manipulate. Now as the clan licks it’s wounds, Gullswoop plans out the next step in his plan...
Will they catch on in time?
Traditions :
Assessment System - This system was created by Ashstar, who understood new blood was crucial to maintaining a thriving clan but also valued loyalty amongst clan cats. When an outside wishes to join the clan, they will be able to live within clan borders for half a moon but are forbidden from nearing or entering the actual camp. They are paired up with a warrior who will spend the half moon living with them, teaching them the clan ways, and any other information that is required for them to live amongst the clan. At the end of the half moon, the leader will approach the warrior and ask for a report on the outsider, what they’ve learned, and if they are fit for joining the clan. If the answer is yes, then the outsider will travel with the leader and medicine cat to receive their warrior name from the Starry Cavern, as a way to make sure StarClan also approves. The only cats that do no have to endure the Assessment System are cats under the age of 6 moons.
Advisor System - This was created by Toadstar after his deputy, Thunderfoot, attempted cause a rebellion against him. He realized that sometimes a leader’s judgment may be blinded and giving only one other cat authority could cause issues. So he created the advisor system which allows up to three cats to act as deputies/advisors to the current leader. One advisor is picked by the leader (though leaders may choose not to pick) and the other two are left to be chosen by the Clan, sometimes in a small election if there is no clear choice. In the election, there can only be up to five candidates, each must have been reccomended by at least six different warriors or queens. Once the candidates have been chosen, the rest of the clan will use stones to place their votes and the two cats that have the most stones at the end will be deemed as the advisors. The advisors all work and act like deputies, usually splitting the daily focus between borders, hunting, and other (herbs, camp repair, etc).
Half-Moon Travels - Just like most clans, they travel to speak with StarClan during half-moons. However, it’s not just the medicine cats that go. The leader also accompanies the medicine cat on these journeys.
Warrior Journey - This was created by Sandstar, who believed that true warriors would receive their names from StarClan themselves. When an apprentice has reached the end of their apprenticeship, they will leave the clan with little instruction of where the Starry Cavern is located. It is their mission and final test to find the cavern on their own. They are given two full days to find it. After the two day mark, a patrol is sent out to find them and bring them home. Provided they have not gone astray with kittypets or rogues and are found safely, they will still be given their warrior name but by the leader instead. To not receive your warrior name from StarClan is highly frowned upon. Most warriors who don’t are less likely to ever hold a high position in the clan and often treated with less respect.
