The Ocean
The ocean deep is full of strange creatures humanity has not yet discovered. Among the creatures is a species that humans have seen but continue to deny the existence of, various breeds of sea serpents and monsters. Many are gathered into tribes, typically living around the warm waters of underwater volcanos as cold-blooded creatures.
They are the apex predators of the deep, eating anything from fish to sharks and sometimes taking on whales if they are large enough. They are usually very large, at least larger than a shark, and sometimes hundreds of feet long at largest. They come in many different shapes, colours, patterns and breeds but a similarity they all share is having longer serpentine bodies and reptilian features. Some have bioluminescence, where creatures glow in the dark, or echo-location.
They are also obsessed with gold, jewels, and anything pretty or shiny, like dragons. They will often attack human ships not only out of self defense if the ships come too close to their territory, but to sink whatever treasure lays on the ship down to their caves for keeping.
The Tribes
A tribe called the Matu Tribe formerly lived in the warm waters and caves around an underwater volcano. Unfortunately, less than a year ago the Suat Tribe from the far South abandoned their home and swam miles away from the humans and their ships. A large and aggressive Tribe, they forced the Matu Tribe out of their volcano home and pushed them further North into colder waters where they remain now. The Suat Tribe now lives in a fragile peace while everyone in the outcasted tribe desperately wants their home back, some want to coexist with the new tribe, others want revenge, either way, war is imminent.
Drakon
At the top of the tribe ranks is the Drakon, the leader who is chosen or voted for by the group.
Noble Hunters
Underneath the Drakon are the hunters, while any tribe member can hunt their own fish, the hunters can take down whales, sharks, and other large prey to help feed the whole tribe.
Deep Watchers
Somewhere between Hunters and Surfacers, they swim around the territory like guards or stick close to the home caves in order to guard the tribe from anything that would pose a threat or attack their hatchlings, like sharks or other sea-serpents.
Surfacers
Surfacers are the quickest and most cautious tribe-members who watch for human ships up on the surface and organize ship attacks.
Volcano Smiths
Very talented tribe members who stay deep within the volcano and use the gold and metal sunk from human ships to make the rare bit of armour or weapons, typically bits work over claws or teeth to make them sharper, and are normally given to higher ranks.
Soldiers
The average tribe member who is well trained in fighting but wasn't put into any position or skill. They normally do some hunting on their own and do work with the Deep Watchers or Surfacers if needed.
Hatchlings & Eggs
Kept deep within the home caves and guarded very closely by their parents, both mothers and fathers, who leave their rank for a while to take care of their hatchlings until they are old enough, and stay within the caves most of the time.
