Was anyone else reminded of Cinderpelt when Puddleshine couldn't interpret the omens?
There are a few parallels between the two characters:
-Was the most convenient choice -Was the most convenient choice
-Wanted to be a warrior initially -Wanted to be a warrior initially
-Failed to interpret Tiger and Fire omen -Failed to interpret shadow omens
-Failure caused delay in journey -Failure caused delay in journey
(Next one isn't entirely confirmed yet, just hinted at)
-Had an unusually gifted apprentice -Will very likely have an unusually gifted apprentice
This just makes Puddleshine's situation even worse. Not only was forced into it, his training was rushed, he was the medicine cat during what was probably the darkest time that Clan had ever faced, and seems to have a weaker connection to StarClan than most medicine cats.
And his destiny might just be to train a very important medicine cat, similar to Cinderpelt. Cinderpelt was a great medicine cat, but she does seem to get overshadowed by Leafpool. Shadowkit seems destined to be a medicine cat; and what ShadowClan needs more than ever is a strong medicine cat to help guide the Clan through reconstruction.

I don't mind the comparison, it's almost like a compliment.

I don't mind the comparison, it's almost like a compliment. I guess my point is that both deserved better than they got. Both are incredibly strong characters and yet Cinderpelt still got overshadowed by Leafpool and Puddleshine probably will be by Shadowkit.

Now that you say that, I can definitely see the comparison! Poor Cinderpelt was also almost out of her depth and taking care of the Clan during a trying time...she became full medicine cat only because Yellowfang died in the fire. At least her training wasn't as rushed, but still. Then she had to take care of her Clan while they were sheltering with RiverClan, and also help Bluestar, who was going senile. Cinderpelt even kept Bluestar's madness quiet, so the Clan didn't freak out. She was probably just as much a victim to Bluestar's mad rambling and accusations and insults about the Clan as Fireheart, since she was the one taking medicine dosages to Bluestar.
This has driven home just how terrible it can be when your whole life is derailed -- it starts out so simple, with them wanting to be warriors alongside their siblings, and then it sort of spirals from there. Not only do they not get a "normal" medicine cat experience (like Alderheart and Jayfeather, in a way, who at least have support from medicine cats before them), but they're taking care of their Clans during very, very difficult times. I must admit that I kinda like how Puddleshine mirrors Cinderpelt, but man do they need to give him a break...though I highly doubt he'll get one, what with Tigerheart/star going MIA, Rowanstar losing all nine lives in a scarily quick succession, Tigerheart/star coming back to ShadowClan with his baby mama and their illegal kits, several Clanmates who abandoned the Clan returning...
Puddleshine deserves to sit back and have a drink lol
