We often talk abou how annoying it is that main characters always break the code, but it's unfornatly kind of realistic. One of the main reasons people don't break laws is becuse they don't want to get in trouble, in warriors the characters never really get pusinsh for breaking the code. All the pain cats sufferd from forbidden romances was really of thier own choice not a actual pushiment Bluestar,Yellowfang and Leafpool chose to give up thier kits it wasn't a pushiment. Even minnor stuff like hunting or trespasses on another clan territory isn't often punish now. The series dosent really give the charaters much reason to obey the rules thier basically just there, which is bad writing.

Yeah, I agree- times have changed a lot since Mapleshade's Vengeance. The only clan that seems to punish their clanmates for breaking the warrior code is WindClan, when they ostracized Crowfeather, but then again they became really hypocritical by stealing prey from ThunderClan every book it seems.
I also feel like the warrior code is just there to keep the clans relatively intact- not completely- but someone organized. The warrior code survives generation after generation as long as the majority of the clans follow it at a given time. The only time the warrior code was broken so badly by so many of the warriors during one period of time that the clans threatened to fall apart was during Tigerstar's reign, when, if Tigerstar hadn't been killed, the code-following clans that remained- WindClan and ThunderClan- would have been driven out and the warrior code would have either been dramatically changed or destroyed altogether.
Other than that the warrior code has always survived due to most of the clans wanting the warrior code to still be around. When Brokenstar destroyed the warrior code in ShadowClan, ThunderClan's desire for the code to survive drove them to bring back WindClan and drive out Brokenstar. When the code was broken again not long after by RiverClan and ShadowClan when they tried to drive out WindClan again, ThunderClan came to rescue again and protected the warrior code. When the forest was being destroyed, ThunderClan's desire for the code to be protected was what drove them to convince the clans to move to the lake (you see a pattern). Then when the tables turned, and WindClan and RiverClan seemed to be trying to drive out ThunderClan, ShadowClan was the one to say "no, this ain't cool", and helped protect ThunderClan. When Darktail took over ShadowClan and then tried to take over all the clans, the rest of the clans joined together to protect their way of life. In the end when all hell breaks loose it's always been a majority of the clans supporting the warrior code that keeps it alive, even if a minority break it all the time.

Yeah, even our code breaking protagonists want the most important codes like muder is bad, and the clans sould live together to stick around. The more minnor codes are staring to feel like thier just suggestions insted of rules tho.

I feel as though at this point the code has become more like guidelines than actual rules with the amount of times it's been broken. Not to mention not many cats really get punished for breaking the code as far as I can remember.
"The code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules." sorry, couldn't help but put a Pirates of the Caribbean reference

You could say that maybe the clans learnt something after punishing Mapleshade. 3 warriors were murdered. Is the warrior code really worth so much death?
Also having to give up / lose kits is punishment enough really.
