I feel like I'm in a bloody soap opera. Buckle up ladies and gents; boy do I have a story for you. This is kind of a vent, but I'm posting it here because I believe some people will find it entertaining.
I will simplify a lot of the aspects of this game so that people who are unfamiliar with it can follow it. I have changed names (character names) for the sake of the people involved.
I play World of Warcraft. Fun game, addicting, popular MMORPG. I mostly PvE but I do RP through the game from time to time. I run a guild, mainly for the extra perks (like, you can come back to life faster after you die, it costs less to repair your armour.) In a guild, you can invite up to 1,000 people. They must be on your server, but any level and any class is welcome (unless there are PvP/Raiding/RP restrictions.)
This takes place several months prior to now. I had just brought back my guild. It was a social guild at the time, with only four members (me, and three people who never logged on.) I had managed to get about thirteen others into my guild, and they were all fairly cool people that I talked to a lot. We helped each other level, etc.
I was a level 60 warlock at the time (out of 110), and I RPed via listing a lot, rather than guild RP, or finding and approaching people in the world. (There are lots of ways to meet people for RP. The kind I did most often involved signing up to groups if someone makes one and says it's available for randoms to join. It transports you all to the same server and gives you a raid chat to communicate with each other. These can get as big as 40 people.)
Since this was an RP, I should add that my warlock is a male character, who will be dubbed (mind you, this isn't far off from my actual character name) "Man." Man was his last name, more for a joke than anything else, but he went by Miles. (Again, altered name.)
In a listed RP, I met Vinny. Now, that's an altered version of his character name, even though I learned his real name later. We'll just call him Vinny for the sake of his character. He was a rogue, and together we RPed as pirates. He was a very serious RPer, I dare say more advanced than myself. He was awesome to hang with, so I added him to character friends (If I was online on my level 60 warlock and Vinny was on his rogue I had added, I could see his online status and contact him.) He had asked for my Btag (Think of btag as giving someone your phone number. They can contact you whenever you sign in to your account, no matter what character or server you are on.) I politely declined and he was cool with it. Met him in some other RPs, he came to recognize me instantly.
I will remind you that I am a WARLOCK, which is a ranged caster class, for you gamers out there. High damage but long cast times, and lots of dots. The class is annoying to play but they're renowned in RP for their ability to summon people. Summoning just means teleporting people to your location. You need three people to do so, and people can accept or decline the summon, but as you can imagine, this was a helpful tool for getting 40 RPers to a chosen location in the game. Point is, I was fairly recognizable and became somewhat famous in the listed RP community.
That being said, I believe that happened in early January. Skip forward a few weeks to the first time I met Greg.
I met Greg in another random listed RP. Greg was a demon hunter and was level 102. Since he was cool and was from the same original server as me, I added him to my character friends.
The next RP I see him in we meet up and get one other person to help summon. She was another warlock who I will be calling Clue. Her character name was a bit longer, but Greg and I shortened it to something nice and simple. We decided, the three of us, to make a cult of warlocks/demon hunters.
Clue wasn't a great RPer (both her and Greg ditched punctuation -and in Clue's case, all basic principles of grammar- in favour of typing quickly). It was difficult to understand her, but she was cool, and from my server, so we all added each other to character friends. Greg end up playing on a level 40 mage, and the three of us decided to race to max level. It's not particularly important to the story, but I got to 100 first, Grey got to 100 second, and Clue was 98 for several weeks. Even now, she's only level 101 on her warlock. (I took forever to hit 110, because I was waiting for her to catch up to me at 102 so we could race together again.) I am now 110, Greg is 106, and Clue has since leveled two other characters (one made it to 110, the other is 102, I think.)
I ended up inviting Greg to my guild and giving him a high rank. The next time Clue was online, I added her, too. They became some of the most active guild members, and they were awesome, so I added them both to Btag. We RPed together a lot, and they came to know me as Miles. Because I was on a male character, neither bothered to wonder if I was actually a young lady. (We've all heard of 40 year old men being young girls, but not the other way around.) Anything's better than getting catcalled.
Fast forward to much later, Greg, Clue and myself are in our usual spot, RPing, when we get a new arrival. He introduces himself as Clue's boyfriend (I figured IC, as we were currently RPing) and when he turns out to be a decent RPer, we add him to the guild. Turns out this guy was Vinny, the rogue I met forever ago, on a different character. He says hey, and everything's pretty chill.
About three weeks later, Vinny and Clue have gotten close, thanks to RPing as dating characters, so they contact each other and they end up dating each in real life. Good for them, I suppose. (They're both 19, I should add. Greg is 21 and I, at the time, was 14. Nobody was aware of anyone's age at the time, because we didn't care.)
Clue has been good friends with me and Greg in game for a while, so she likes to remind us that she loves us, and that we're awesome. We have to give her support because she's an awesome friend, but she tends to get very emotional. Vinny was not particularly comfortable with Clue saying she loves two random dudes (Remember, I'm Miles Man, on a male warlock, and Greg is... Greg.) Clue messages me later that Vinny is uncomfortable about it (even though he hasn't outright asked her to stop) so she tells me that she intends to continue dating him. She's very apologetic, because she feels like she's friend zoning me. I calmly tell her that it's completely chill, and that I'm a woman. She's a bit surprised, but I'm guessing she immediately relays this information on to Vinny.
In a later RP, when Vinny's online but Greg and Clue aren't, he messages me about not seeing me for a bit, says hey, and we RP. He mentions me being a woman, and I ask if Clue told him. He says yes, and says it doesn't change our friendship at all. I don't really mind either way. He asks for my btag again, and since he's been in the guild a while, I add him.
Everything's fine and chill (the guild has got up to 70 people!) and everyone's good friends with everyone. Some 13 year old kid named God joins. A few days in, he calls Clue several rude words in regards to her character's outfit. Greg and Clue were the only ones online at this time, and Greg FLIPS on him. The next time I log in Clue messages me about God being rude, and I have to talk to all three of them to figure out the problem. I try to get Greg to talk to God about everything, but he outright refuses, saying he just hates the kid for no real reason other than hating him. God and Greg "agree" just to avoid talking to each other in guild chat, so that they can both continue to be friends with other guild members. A week later, God leaves. It was of his own accord, without me removing him.
I think it's amusing that that's actually not far off from his character's name, because it accurately captures what follows. God really does leave.
About a month ago (maybe a month and a half) Greg stops playing. He's gone for 12 days, and me and Clue miss him. When he comes back, we RP some, but his game subscription runs out. He can't play on his characters, but he does contact Clue and I via Btag. Clue really misses him and she talks to me a lot more to cope with it.
Then, when I'm RPing with Vinny, Clue asks if I want to join a voice call with her and Greg. I tell Vinny about it, apologize, and he comments that he and Clue are taking a break. He says he already misses her a lot, and I decide not to get too involved. I join with Clue and Greg (Greg's Irish and Clue's actually a woman!) They both seem surprised that I sound so... high pitched. (Guess Clue forgot that I told her I was female).
To quote Greg; "Ohhh, that's a lass voice. You a lass, Miles*?"
I confirm that yep, I'm a fifteen year old girl, and that completely stuns him. We've known each other several months and he just wasn't aware (despite that I once lectured him about periods?)
Anyways, we play a different game together, the three of us, talking over the chat. Greg keeps calling me laddie, corrects himself, calls me Miles, and then just admits to being completely confused by what to call me. I say anything's better than 'Man.' We settle for Nicky, which isn't my real name, but is something similar to the name of one of my other characters (a character whose name I usually go by on the internet.) We talk for two hours before the three of us log out.
Greg just recently got his game subscription back, and I saw him online the other day. I said hey to him in the guild chat, but he did not acknowledge me. Ah well. Figured he just didn't see me. Might have been afk.
Today, I log in, and there are four other people on. There's Vinny (who has gotten back with Clue) Clue, Greg, and Josh (a friend of Greg's that he's become much closer to and RPs with a lot more than Clue and I).
I plan on telling them all about my new hair cut (I just cut nine inches off!) so I ask how people are doing. This is the guild chat. Some of Vinny's comments are paraphrased but otherwise these are direct quotes:
Man: "Eyy, how is everyone?"
Clue: "*dies*"
Vinny: "Doing the lucid nightmare puzzles to get the mount."
Josh: "Not bad."
Greg:
Man: "Glad to hear it, Josh. Dare I ask why you're dying, Clue?"
Vinny: "This riddle is really hard lol"
Man: "What's the riddle?"
Clue: "just youtube l+ love"
Vinny. "I am, love. Its really tedious is all"
Man: "Ah."
Man: "Was gonna say google it."
Clue: "and miles because i need some space i don't want to make anyone deal with me"
Vinny: "Too bad that I'm here to listen if you need anything <3"
Clue: "no love i am a bad person and my ex friend was right all i do is hurt people and i should get some space"
Man: "I'll give you some space if you need it, but if you need to vent, I'm always willing to listen."
Clue has gone offline.
Man: "Ah shoot."
Vinny: "I'll text her but don't worry about it much if she needs the time alone. She'll work it out by herself"
Man: "Alright."
Then via Btag, Clue messages me that she's never playing WoW again because she made me lose guild members and that she doesn't want to come back because of someone in the guild. I told her that losing members isn't a problem and that I want to be able to help. I asked her who the problem was so that I could handle the situation and she signed off the game completely.
I messaged Vinny about it and he says he thinks the problem is Greg. He said Greg was being a [some rude words] earlier. I tell him that I'll talk to Greg about it. Vinny says not to tell him that he was the one who mentioned it, and I assure him that I'm going to make it the least personal that I can.
He says I'm pretty chill, and if he weren't dating Clue, he'd probably be hitting on me. I tell him I'm FIFTEEN and he apologizes. I say that he probably shouldn't tell anyone that sort of thing, but I won't tell Clue because it's not my business and god, it's already bad enough, I don't need to get involved. He says I'm cool again and I contact Greg.
Man: "Hey, sorry to bother you. Just wanted to talk you about some of the recent guild drama, if you have a moment."
Greg: "what about?..."
Man: "Clue's pretty upset right now and she's talking about quitting WoW forever. She mentioned it was because of someone in the guild and I was wondering if you'd seen anything."
Greg: "honestly"
Greg: "I've been putting distance between clue and me"
Greg: "she's just so perfect and i want to be close to her but i don't want to mess with her and vinny"
Greg: "I'm worried that i'll hurt her feelings and I don't want to ruin her relationship"
Man: "I understand what you're saying. I don't want to make you share anything personal, but thank you for telling me that."
Greg has gone offline.
So I message Vinny about what he said, but I leave out the part where he talks about loving her, because it's personal and not my business. Vinny tells me that he's aware of the reason (tells me he knows that Greg loves her) but he remarks that he thought they were getting closer instead of distancing themselves. He says Greg's overly dramatic, annoying, and emotional. Whatever. Not my business. None of this is. It's just my guild, so it becomes my problem.
I continue playing for a short while, not chatting or anything. Greg comes back online, leaves the guild, and removes me from Btag.
Vinny immediately messages me not to worry about it too much. I say that I'm still upset because I don't want to pick sides, because I'm friends with all of them.
Greg character friend messages me about why he's leaving, and I tell him that we're going to miss him, but that I'm not going to force him to stay if he's not comfortable with that. He says "bye" and logs out again.
Vinny talks to me about relationships and I tell him I understand it about as much as seaslugs understand algebra. And after he didn't reply for ten minutes, I logged out, because I couldn't handle any more of that.
TL;DR: Being a guildmaster is hard. I feel like I'm babysitting adults.
