I did not like Dear Evan Hansen. It's probably the only musical I've ever uttered those words about except for Twisted (and even then, it really has more to do with people defending Disney's Jafar and considering the musical canon over the actual animated film).
I've listened to the songs and I know the story, but I just can't seem to like it at all. I can't even explain why, I guess it just isn't my cup of tea. However, I can understand why someone else may like it.
The toxic or obnoxious part of the fanbase doesn't really help, but then again, that's unavoidable with most fanbases in general anyway, even for other things that I like.
For a musical dealing with mental illness, I personally prefer Next to Normal over DEH, but that's just me.

I usually read the lyrics to all the songs of a musical before listening to it so that way I know what they're actually singing about, since it can be hard to follow the storyline by listening alone
So I looked up Dear Evan Hansen and the story doesn't really make sense to me, nor do I have an interest in it. But maybe it's something I actually have to hear in order to like.

Isn't DEH about some kid manipulating the family of a boy who killed himself just because he wants attention and has a thing for the dead kid's sister? Idk, I read the Wikipedia description, and it sounded... really messed up and not at all the the hopeful story about overcoming mental illness that I saw it framed as. Unless I'm getting something, I really, really don't get the hype. (And don't even think it sounds like a good or accurate portrayal of mental illness, either, but w/e.)
