The blaring sound of Jude's phone alarm had permeated into her dreams again. This time, she had dreamt about a raging, wild storm tearing Gloriaville apart, and she hadn't been able to find anyone else. The image of grey streaked skies and rubble at her feet stuck at the back of her mind. At first, the girl had thought the alarm was tornado sirens, but then she jerked awake in a sweat under her numerous blankets and pillows, a hand pawing under her pillow for her phone. Jude thumbed at the screen and shut off her alarm. Her eyes were squinted at the bright light of her phone screen. 7:30 AM. If she didn't get up soon, she'd be late for school. Again. Damn it.
There was something about mornings that just made Jude's mood sour. Maybe it was the fact that she never got enough sleep. The girl had a habit of staying up far too late, simply listening to music or watching movies, not wanting the day to end and the next to come. Weekends were a solace, the oasis in the desert, though Jude felt that was a bit of a dramatic metaphor. Either way, mornings weren't fun. Getting up and getting dressed for another day at her dusty old school. Just what she wanted to do. Great. Spectacular. It was only November, they were barely two months into senior year, yet Jude was already counting down the days 'til graduation.
After staying in bed for fifteen minutes more, Jude's second morning alarm shook her out of dozing off again. The ginger girl finally sat up and mumbled curses under her breath. She made sure her phone was plugged in to charge, and turned on a quiet playlist from her music library. Time to start the day. Her routine was as normal as anyone else's - get up, brush her teeth, figure out what to do with her hair, wash her face and such. While makeup was fun to do, Jude preferred a bit of mascara and tinted lip balm for school. Minimal effort was evident. Her outfit was a typical Jude-ish look, an old t-shirt from some feminist 90's punk band she loved, tucked into her faded old jeans and a flannel thrown over. Nothing too flashy when it came to school. She was starting not to care anymore. Breakfast was a long gone concept, aside from drinking a water bottle out of the fridge. Jude grabbed her keys from the kitchen counter and hurried outside into the crisp morning air. It didn't take long for her to get to school - Jude was a notorious speed demon, and in a little less than ten minutes she turned into the school parking, cutting off other cars and quickly parking in her usual spot.
If there was anything Jude prayed for, it was to leave her crummy, tiny town, and just drive down the highway without worrying about looking back. The thought of it kept playing in her mind, like a vinyl record on repeat, and by the time Jude was opening her locker the world around her was just static. Almost 200 days left of school.
