What's it like weather and aesthetic wise where you live?

the weather's pretty mild most of the time both in summer and winter, at least where I am specifically. it's totally different across the country though because we're such a tall country and also because we have a lot of coastline but also plenty of forests, lakes and a ton of mountains up north
describing the aesthetic is difficult, mostly because everything that comes to mind about my town specifically would make it rather obvious where I live to anyone who knows swedish towns even just slightly. we all know the general feel of other cities and towns pretty well. if you specify I could focus on the terrain, architecture, etc but otherwise it's a very open question so I'm finding it hard to answer it properly

I was wondering if you would make a thread like this! My dad got a job at a Norwegian based company, so I've become interested in Scandinavia CX
Anyway,do they teach english at your schools and if so, is it optional or required?
Also, I've heard that there is a national dress?

I was wondering if you would make a thread like this! My dad got a job at a Norwegian based company, so I've gotten interested in Scandinavia CX Anyway,do they teach english at your schools and if so, is it optional or required? Also, I've heard that there is a national dress? english is taught and required, yeah! from year three (nine years old) until you head to uni. I started taking english when I was in year one so it is possible to start taking it as a subject earlier, it just depends on your school. we take a modern foreign language as well starting in year six at the latest, usually french, german or spanish and though that is technically optional it's more like you can drop out of the subject if you'd like. parental consent is required.
there is a national dress, yes! not all of us own one, it's not as important culturally as the national dresses in norway for example, but it's traditional to wear for midsummer and also things like weddings or graduation parties after gymnasiet (though if you're the one graduating you wear white and not the dress). I don't own one myself but my mum does and I'm set to inherit it once I turn eighteen. that isn't like a tradition or anything, though. this is what they look like, as modelled by the women of our royal family:

wow! No wonder so many Scandinavians are fluent in English! In the US (at least where I live) they don't start offering foreign language classes until 7th Grade (ages 12-13) and even then its only Spanish... Other languages like French and German aren't offered until high school Also, those dresses are really pretty! Wish we had something like that cx

yeah, we're pretty much all conversational at the very least. watching english films and tv doesn't hurt either, we don't dub anything but children's movies. it's actually pretty rare to find people between the ages of 15 and, say 45, who aren't fluent in at least two languages and conversational in another one or two. I'm surprised, that's so late? there were people in my year who were taking four languages by the time they were eleven. would you say people emphasise language in the us or does nobody really think much of it? is it something that's talked about when it comes to the politics of education?
and yeah, I love them a lot tbh. it's really cool to have something like that.

I'm impressed if I meet someone who is fluent in two languages Even then, they probably learned the laugauge at home and from family rather than at school. I guess that schools don't feel like they need to start teaching other languages earlier because English is so widespread. Personally I think they need to start teaching languages sooner, because the little Spanish I know from school won't help me at all if I want to travel to a prominently Spanish speaking country

that makes sense I suppose. would you say that language is kind of a novelty, then? is it looked down upon or just disregarded?
me as well tbh. even here, I feel like we could definitely start sooner

I think its kind of disregarded tbh I mean, even if I wanted to learn another language, say Swedish, there arent many opportunities for me to do so, and classes for forgien languags are often fairly expensive, which is unforunate.
To sum it up in one sentence its kind of like, "You're bilingual? That's cool, I guess."

Sorry I don't have a question but I second the whole America needs to teach foreign language earlier. We couldn't start earlier than eighth grade at my school But my friend from Mexico is fluent in Spanish, English, and French and I'm super jealous of him Honestly languages are super cool and I wanna learn more but there's not much chance too

it unfortunate but yeah, I think that may be true. even as a european who, for the most part, has nothing to do with the us I've gotten very aggressive questioning from american family friends whenever I talk about the languages I'm learning. I've heard "it's a waste of time, you already know english? how isn't that enough for you?" so many times which is kind of weird because they know swedish is my mother tongue so?? what do you even mean??

I just love languages and actually wrote my research paper on this topic in junior year ap lang But yeah like I've taken five years of Spanish in middle/high school including a college class in high school and I still feel like I barely know anything. Foreign language education is just horrible here I wanna learn French or Italian since I've got some Spanish experience

I know! It's sad how many people dropped out of foreign languages after the required two years. And when I asked some of my friends they just said It was hard or useless and I just don't get it? Yeah it's hard but what does that matter? And it's so not useless...

The Kat's KitKat it doesn't really bother me anymore, honestly, it just confuses me to no end. it's not like I'll forget English by learning another language.
. that's such a huge shame. it really would be nice to see languages being treated like any other subject and I've taken French for six years now and totally recommend it. even just speaking English is easier with foundational French I've noticed, and as far as languages go it's pretty easy to learn.

Yeah they only offer Spanish and German at my school so French wasn't even an option Idk I'm gonna continue Spanish in college (and minor in it) but hopefully in the future I'll be able to learn french I really wanna study abroad in some Spanish speaking country
