"confidence is like a dragon where, for every head cut off two more heads grow back"
power resides only where men believe it lies. power is a shadow, shifting underfoot like sand. blood spills on that sand, and those who can survive the cuts stay upright, keeping their power. but those that fall are swallowed whole. only the strong survive.

The Rules
1. follow all forum rules. Pretty obvious I'd think.2. this is a pretty advanced/literate role play. this means please have at least a paragraph or so post. at least enough to keep going. Not every post has to be a novel, but at least have some substance to your post. At least correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Flesh out the plot, your characters, and ideas with your posts. 3. on a note of characters; some specific families will play a larger role than others. This is a role play that thrives on side characters, however, the main characters from the families are limited, so do not take all the roles for one family. also, while the shifters are powerful, especially in animal form, they are not invincible. 4. please try to keep the gender ratios equal. This may not work out perfectly and be completely even, but it should be somewhat. I don't want a role play full of all females or all males.5. LGBTQ+ characters are allowed and encouraged!6. before you join send me a PM with characters you wish to claim [ family role, name, gender, age, short description of personality & physical attributes ] & a role play example. I then will approve your characters and you may post on the character page with their detailed form that can be worked on at any time. that's all folks ;3

footnotes
I'd just like to clarify, this is an light urban fantasy role play. It takes place in a world that is not our own, yes, but it is set in a technological era similar to our own. I've heavily taken many elements of Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire, however, it does not follow exactly. This is not a Game of Thrones role play. I would, however, consider this to be complex and fleshed out similarly to it. I've expanded upon the original role play I created a long time ago. So this is quite obviously an advanced role play, however, it shouldn't be difficult in concept since it is modern and lacks a complicated magic system.
DISCLAIMER: This role play is entirely mine. The idea, the words, and such. However, I give credit where credit is due. Quite obviously, I did not come up with all of the names for everything in this world. If you're a Game of Thrones fan, either book or show, you should notice the similar names to George R. R. Martin. I love the names and the idea of each House having an animal, so it's not completely original. The shifters idea is one that has been done many times, and is one of my favorite concepts, but I did not come up with it. Also, a special thanks to ♀♥ΏSecret Ninja Ώ♥♀ for the idea behind the Blackfyre family having computer skills and the hacking program. All character belong to their respective owners.

Welcome to ValyriaValyria is an ancient stronghold that for centuries has ruled over the five kingdoms. The Storm Kingdom, the Crownlands, the Badlands, the Backbone, and the Stone Kingdom. These kingdoms have evolved through an industrial era of prosperity and peace. But as Valyria is quickly ushered into the technological era, power is beginning to shift again. but first, let us meet the Kingdoms of Valyria.
The Storm Kingdom -- this kingdom resides on the south eastern edge and tip of the continent. Taking up most of the south to the Badlands and all of the broken up islands that make up the edge. Centuries ago, they ruled the islands as just roguish and brutal people, but as they've migrated more inland they've smoothed out. Still iron to the corn, the Stormborn are masterful sailors. They believe in strength above all else, making them cold and icy to all. They say their are two types of Stormborn, landers and islanders. The landers are said to be softer, poised, and more diplomatic than the hardheaded, iron willed islanders. Their capital is an ancient island called Darkclyff. The ruling family is the Greyjoys, however the landers would consider the Buchanans the rulers. The Storm Kingdom builds fleets of ships and naval operations of Valyria. The Crownlands -- this kingdom dominates the entire western edge of Valyria. From the edge of the southern Badlands, up to the edge and overlapping with some of the Backbone, the Crownlands are the home to the strongest families. Castamere, Blackfyre, and Volantis all have roamed the territory since the Dawn, and it is divided up for those three main families. The Castameres hold the coast and rocky edges, building beautiful architecture into the rock itself. The Blackfyres have the plains that stretch towards the west and touch the Stormlands on the east. Finally Volantis has the craggy fields and edge of the Backbone, toughening up their brood to be strong and agile fighters in both forms. The Crownlands is home to the most famous city in all of Valyria; Vylaenar. The Shifters of the Crownlands are strong and fast. The Castameres are loyalty above else, and as the value gaining wealth and respect by any means possible. The Volantis tigers value their family, the continuation of family lines, and tend to be more loose when it comes to everything else. And Blackfyres, they are either great or mad. Paranoia runs rampant among the Dragons, making the Blackfyre family a flame that could be easily extinguished. The Castamere family are economists, great with money, and run the banks. The Volantis family makes up the soldiers, the keepers of the peace, and run security. Blackfyres originally were metal workers, blacksmiths, and worked with the Bolton steel and the Stark wolves to make beautiful weapons. However, more recently it has changed completely into technology, computers, and artificial intelligence. The Stone Kingdom -- The Stone Kingdom has two main regions within it. The steep cliffs on the north eastern side, where they begin to form into the Backbone, and the slopped grasslands and thick forests. The Stone Kingdom really has no capital, except for the two ancestral seats, Thornhollow and Brightsnow. The Arryn family has most of the cliffs, since they can fly. They began to create an incorrigible hold in the smaller mountains within their reach, making it really only accessible by flight, but it is impossible to escape come winter, hence the name Brightsnow. The forests are thick and dense, but a Tyrell fox could find their way back to their crumbling home of Thornhollow. It was once a great fort built out of sturdy wood and once held all of the Tyrells allies in it. Now it is crumbling into ruins, and the Tyrells have moved completely to Vylaenar. The Arryns trade is medicine, as they were the ones who originally found many natural uses in the herbs and plants that populate the Stone Kingdom. They crave knowledge, making many of them doctors and nurses, and they set up the first hospital in a youthful Vylaenar. The Tyrells own the farming and agriculture sector of living. The Badlands -- The Badlands are only inhabited by one family, and they are as ancient as the sand that covers the Badlands. The Martell family has ruled the Badlands, working with the branches of their families and other desert families to create a strong nation. They are a tanned, hardworking, but free and spirited clan. Originally their capital was a moving city of tents and colorful fabric, constantly moving among the desert's hidden springs and oasis'. But about a hundred years ago they created a sand stone city that is quite small compared to other capitals. It is called Sunspeare, and glows white in the sunlight. It's rather colorful once inside the gates of it, the smaller buildings leaning together and rope suspended from it and from different heights, perfect for swinging from building to building. It is the least technological place, and they still create beautiful artisan pots, pans, cups, glasses, jewelry and such for all of Valyria. Spices, herbs, and medicines are traded as well, slipping into Arryn's hold, but the Martell family supplies more natural remedies for things, rather than the scientific hospice the Arryn's provide. The Backbone - The northern border of Valyria is a range of tall and ancient purple mountains, known as the Backbone. It is the entire upper continent, formerly volcanoes, but now they lack the lava and have seemingly transformed into the majestic peaks of today. There is two hold fasts, both carved deep into the mountains and only accessible from tunnels and cave systems that the ancient Starks carved. It is a wealth of minerals and jewels, and an ore that makes the Bolton Spydersteel so much stronger than regular steel. The Starks ancestral home is actually impossible to get to, a tunnel having collapsed fifty years ago, but it was an architectural phenomenon, and it was called Frostedfang. The Bolton's still have a hold within the mountains, but lacked the grandeur of Frostedfang. It is called Coldwing, and it is much higher up on the mountain peaks than Frostedfang. The only other family that lives primarily in the Backbone, does not actually live in the mountains, but in the surrounding area of woods that cup the bottom of the mountains. The Oakmonts were the protectors of the mountains, lumbering through the woods, hence their trade of being lumberjacks. Their ancestral home is the current capital of the Backbone, if you can even call it a capital, it is the Iceclaw and is a huge timber fort reinforced with Spydersteel. The people of the Backbone are strong, but kind. They know the harshest winters, but prevail with help from each other. They're giving, but do not take their kindness for weakness.

Origin & History
An ancient legend weaves it's way through Valyria, touching all Kingdoms and families. It is the story of how Valyria came to be, how all who can trace their lineage back to the Moments of Dawn. It is said that Valyria was once only rock and ash and magma, churning together in a violent mixture, making it impossible for anyone to live upon the vast continent. Ash and acid and fire rained from the sky, never giving it any reprieve. On the men made of volcanic rock could weave their way among the rocks, slithering with their long tails and leathery skin. Valyria was a doomed place, cursed by the gods to be a ruin, a place for only evil demons to lurk.
When just before the Dawn, a ship sailed to the place from a far off land of unknown name. The glittering gold ship saw Valyria and it's hot surface, the sea gods that protected Valyria grew angry that someone dared to come to their forbidden land. So the water began to bubble and swell, the wave crests getting higher and higher. The young ship was battered and twisted by the waves, the rain beginning to pour for the first time in a hundred years. The ship was surviving, so the sea gods blew great winds and the rain slammed in sheets. But still the ship stayed above water. And so in a great wave, thousands of feet high, it smashed into the ship, breaking it into a million pieces, but also washing over Valyria, cooling the rocks and dispelling the heat from the land. It drowned the volcanic men, and carved up Valyria into it's current state.
The gods saw what happened and how Valyria had changed, and so they came down to bless it, opening up the dark clouds above and in the Moments of Dawn, the once evil place was washed with light. In those Moments, the gods each created a creature to guard Valyria. A humanoid made like those from the far off continent, but with the blood of the gods and their forms. So the creatures could turn into the beings that the gods embodied. Wolves, lions, tigers, falcons, foxes, sharks, and so many more shifted into humans and back. Becoming not two consciousness, but one single soul melded with two forms.
And so their population grew, untainted by real human blood. Their numbers turned from several into thousands, working Valyria into a blossoming continent. Cities grew, Kingdoms battled, the ancient families surviving together and apart into a rich history of blood and peace. Until today, where the Shifters still live, coming thousands of years from the old days of the lava and ash. Into an industrial era of technology and trade, the gods and the Moments of Dawn only legends in history books.
✦✦✦
the Shifters
Shifter culture varies from region to region. However, all Shifters are, at the core, the same. They have what is considered a 'melded soul'. So, the human form and animal form are no different, they are the same consciousness. The animal version has the same thoughts as the human, although a touch more primal and carnal than a rational human. The animal form is much larger than their normal counterparts, about twice as large than a regular, which is how a Shifter is told apart from a normal animal.
Shifters are usually born from two Shifter parents, and the child will have the animal form that their mother had. Unless, the mother is a human and the father is a Shifter, then the child will have the father's animal and be considered full blooded Shifter. As Valyria began to trade with other continents and nations, more human immigrated and folded into the Shifter society and world. It depends on the family or Kingdom whether the human and Shifter relations are appropriate or forbidden. The Crownlands and the Storm Kingdom frown upon human and Shifter relationships, while the other three Kingdoms have much less strict rules.
Shifters have very loose hierarchy when it comes to the same Shifter animals. They are typically equal, with only the powerful ruling families considered Alphas and above all other Shifters. Culturally, each region values different things, wear different clothes and colors, have different craftsmanship in items.
Shifters mate for life in a complex ritual of both forms and the melding of their souls. While no one is quite sure if the mating ritual truly does anything, or if it a powerful placebo. However, once mated, the Shifters cannot take another true mate. They can have lovers or partners, but they cannot be called mate after their first mate. The ritual is quite secretive, but includes the sharing of blood, a brand, and talismans.

The City
While each Kingdom and region certainly has their fair share of cities and the ancestral seats of each family, it is rare for the families to live in those places. In fact, the buzzing hub of Valyria is actually a shining jewel on the western edge. Vylaenar. It is a sprawling city that has many different sections that carve the huge silver towers. It resides in the Crownlands, straddling the line toward the northern Backbone, which provides as a stunning view across the northern skyline. The city itself is the largest in Valyria, all other paling in comparison to it. The city is a labyrinth of streets, crisscrossing alleys, narrow crooked streets, and markets. Once is was cobblestone streets, leaning gabled buildings, and shifty markets. Since industrialization, only the eldest part of the city has been spared from the silver behemoth buildings. But it is still a labyrinth of complicated streets and dead ends and crooked alleys.
Honeywine Avenue is the wealthiest and richest part of Vylaenar. Lined with fancy, colorful shops that sell beautiful furs, jewels, shoes, and so on. The shops line each side of the wide thoroughfare, which is always packed with cars. The sidewalks are painted gold, shining up onto the windows of the shops. Above the shops are rows and rows of expensive apartments. It's a busy strip leading down into the main business district of the city.
Industrial Square while it is not quite a square, it is the sprawl of buildings dedicated to business. Corporations with their names emblazoned on the steel structures immortalize the Great Families. From Lion's Bank to Bolton Steel. It's the core of the business in the City, and while it looks shimmering and beautiful, it is nowhere close to such on the inside. Corruption runs strong, but any misdeeds are handled in the darker underbelly of the city.
Hunter's Slum is the unsavory section filled with the dodgy bars, the dark alleyways, run down warehouses, the grungy streets lined with skeletal creatures. It a territory that is controlled mostly by the Volantis family, their business coinciding with hiring of thugs. The most famous bar is called Full Moon, but only because it is Volantis run and is usually a "safe" place for the Great Families to meet and discuss under the table deals. Other famous places are The Purple Rose, The Heat, and Haze.
Summerport is the port, lined with docks, wharves, and loading bays. It opens out on the Dawn Sea, and lines the entire coast of the city. Constantly boats come to and from the port, most of them controlled by the Greyjoys or Buchanans. The flags will tell, but most are gray and gold and black. It has warehouses just behind the docks that lead into the next sector of town, but the warehouses store goods from the ships that enter the Summerport.
Middletown is as it is named, the middle of the city and the northern end of town, spanning the whole way across. It has three districts within it. The Kitchen, Sandstone, Dragon's Way. The Kitchen is the poorest section of Middletown, although no where near Hunter's Slum on the opposite end. It's called the Kitchen because of it's tough community that comes together no matter what you shift into and feed and help each other. It's filled with good and tough people. Sandtown is the Martell section of the city. It is filled with colorful places, people, bars, restaurants, cafes, fortune tellers, and buildings. Different than the rest of the shining city, it has more of a 'sand' worn feel to it, mimicking a city in the Badlands; the capital of Sunspeare. Finally Dragon's Way is a secretive, lonely place with minimal people and run down places. Neon lights filter through the gloom and the walls are lined with rebellion marks of the Blackfyre family, roaring dragon heads and fire are painted to lick up the building walls in open defiance of the Castamere rule.

The Plot
Previous Historical Context -- The rulers of the Backbone used to be the Stark wolves, and they had control over the weaponry and ammunition for all of Valyria, making them quite the powerful family. They resided in Vylaenar as the most powerful entity. Their strength came from their ability to make allies and keep peace among all of the families. However, the Castamere lions were not going to be complacent in their second ranked role. So they set a plan in motion to destroy the Stark wolves, turning their enemies into allies and in the night, murdered almost all of the Stark wolves in their beds. Now, they control all of Vylaenar as the wealthiest family in Valyria.
However, even further back than that, the Blackfyre dragons shifted their focus from crafting metals for the Stark's weaponry company and instead turned to the growing business of technology. However, the Blackfyres were not a steady group, a civil war bursting forth from the inner workings of the family. A particularly brilliant Blackfyre had created a now infamous computer program named Balerion, which could break into any device or coded program. While the younger versions, Meraxes and Vhaghar could create undetectable viruses that would quickly kill any computer and destroy anything it needed to by bringing up digital flames and the computer would then fizzle out. But the Blackfyres began to destroy each other, until the winner was left broken, bleeding, and without family. So, Rhea Blackfyre, the original creator of Balerion, slunk into hiding within Dragon's Way, and it is believed the passwords to operate all three programs died with her. Although her heirs want the other families to believe otherwise.
Current Events -- It is a year or so after the destruction of the Stark wolves, their northern allies still furious about the merciless way they were slaughtered. Castamere lions hold onto their power by the slightest edge, every family chomping at the bit to be the most powerful, the most wealthy, the most feared. Civil war among families is stirring, about to break forth. And if the Blackfyres really can work their programs, it might be just as much a cyber war as a physical one. [ more to come ]
