The tablet I'm using is a wacom intuos tablet. It works well most of the time but can be a bit glitchy with specific things: sometimes it forgets what I programmed in the buttons and just uses the default settings (I use the programmable buttons to toggle between brush and eraser so that's pretty annoying when it doesn't work) and sometimes it doesn't register when I lift up the pen and thinks I am still holding it down, so when I move it to a different part of the screen, it draws a line. My computer and my art program are both fairly old however, so it may be a compatibility issue rather than a tablet issue. Who knows. Overall I remember that when I was tablet shopping the wacom intuos seemed like the most reasonable price + the most positive reviews, so that's why I chose it. It fits in your lap and has 6 of the aforementioned programmable buttons, which are pretty convenient but definitely not a necessity.
The reason I had to get my current tablet was because my previous one's connection cord became damaged, and after a few months of it randomly disconnecting and me having to jiggle the cord until it connected again, I went to get a new one with a cord that plugs in on both sides rather than one that is connected to the tablet itself.
Other things to look out for are size - don't get one that's too small or else you will have trouble drawing smooth lines and small details.
Whew didn't mean to write an essay but I hope that's helpful!

Don't know if you're still looking, but I have a Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet and I love it, it comes with a nice software and although it takes a while to get used to drawing without looking at the pencil, the tablet and software themselves work very nicely. I also got mine about 7 years ago so they're probably even higher tech now.

I use a wacom intuos as well. mostly because it was cheap, ngl. I actually really like using it though, it takes some time to get used to but everything works smoothly and it pairs well with most programs I've tried. mine is the small size which works well for me because I've always preferred drawing smaller lines so anything bigger would have been kind of a bonus for me, but make sure you look out for size when/if you buy yours if that isn't true for you as well.
