There’s some sibling rivalry, old grudges, a murder mystery and a whole lot of conflicting personalities crammed together. I’ll tell you a little bit about the main characters, if you like.
Yes, they did! My cat followed me around for two days and my dog slept in my lap. They’re my babies.

Yes! Please do tell!
I don't hear a lot about your pets. What do they look like?

Ok! I’ll type up a quick post about them!
And my pets! So, Hunter (my cat) is pretty big for a cat. He’s pretty fat, too, but that just means there’s lots of him to hold on to. He’s solid black with yellow eyes and has the cutest squeaky meow. He has also been known to aggressively headbutt people until they pat him. He’s a super affectionate boy.
And my dog, Arrow, is a red and tan Australian kelpie. He’s small for his breed, but he’s very, very fast. He’s got these big pointy ears - he never quite grew into them - and he smiles a lot. He gets excited very easily and would happily spend hours chasing his ball, if anyone feels like standing outside in the summer heat.
I’ll have to post some photos of them!

He would love it if you’d pat him. He’s super talkative, too, so he’ll meow at you the whole time.
Kelpies are my favourite breed. They were originally bred from dingoes, because English sheepdogs couldn’t handle the Australian heat. They’ve very active, highly intelligent and very loyal dogs. They’ve also very entertaining to watch when they play, because they more or less commando crawl across the ground.
I’ll get pictures, I promise! It’s just so damn hot here. Moving is an effort.

Awww!
I read that as horse kelpie for a brief second and then I had to think about it. XD Awwww! x2 That's really cute! And such a fun mental image.
*pats* Good luck moving!

It was pretty good. I’ve got a pretty decent overview of the next three years of my life, so I’m feeling a little more prepared.
Gonna push to get the next chapter finished this week, since I won’t have much time to work on my own stuff after next Tuesday.

So, moved into a shared house for uni, but two of my housemates are Dudes™️ and it’s such a surreal experience because all we have in our fridge is bread, pasta, vinegar, some cheese and one (1) avocado and somehow we manage to cook satisfactory meals.
On one hand, I really need to go grocery shopping, but on the other hand I’m going to live healthy off this $1 loaf of store brand bread for as long as I can.
The plus side to this is that I am the only one currently not studying or working, so for this week I’m going to be the only one home most days, so I get lots of writing done. That sounds great until you realise that today I spend way too much time compiling a list of things that are 100% cannon but are of zero relevance to the story, so they don’t show up much (or at all). And then there’s the list of 100% cannon happenings that make zero sense whe you take them out of context.

How do you even ... do that? With ... so little food ...? o.o
XD That is almost funny. I've been doing that with WCM lately. Like ... it's all facts about the world, which makes it a very cool and feel real, but the problem is it wont actually come up! We're in the same boat.

I don’t... even... know. My housemates are evidently much better at being frugal than I am. But we ended up with vegetables last night, so we had huge bowls of roasted vegetables for dinner.
It’s kind of a fun boat to be in, tbh. And it seems that some pointless things end up in your draft anyway.
Like the fact that I’ve decided that Rook is a super restless sleeper. Like ‘end up spreadeagled at the opposite end of the bed’ restless. It will lead to some interesting interactions in the future, while everyone’s tromping through the hills together. Brennan definitely gets kicked in the face. Slate, who is aware of this, sleeps as far away from Rook as she can and can never quite work out why Brennan doesn’t seem to mind being within kicking distance. Snakeeyes just wants to leave, because he’s surrounded by idiots.

That still sounds like good food. I'm just impressed a meal can come out of so little.
Truuuuue. Some of it does.
I finally worked out why my story is an alternate reality + futuristic. Maybe my head is better at doing things than I thought. I was watching something which was talking about tropes, which is very helpful for figuring out things for writing. Well, it pointed out that realistically speaking, if [x] fantasy aspect had always existed on Earth than a lot of things would be different in history. What if a general in a war could use magic? Etc. And I was annoyed at that because I have Will to Live take place on Earth and I didn't think the geography was that much different because vampires have always existed through history ... but then I was thinking a bit after that 'wait ... that's why it's an alternate reality earth. I was already sort of thinking that the vampires' effects in some wars and politics was the reason we aren't looking at a carbon copy of Earth'. Sooooooo yeah ... looks like I need to redraw the Earth's map for funsies to see where history got messed up.
Pfft. That is an awesome character quirk. I relate so much to Snakeyes. XD Any other interesting character traits which you can think of?

Oh, it’s always so good when you figure something out! I remember studying speculative fiction and it was always so much fun. I love seeing ways history could have turned out different if little things had been changed.
I think it needs to be drawn at some point. There are so many shenanigans I want to draw. Snakeeyes is honestly the most relatable character in the whole book, tbh
And yes, I do! Both Snakeeyes and Rook have a deep mistrust of horses. Rook and Ari have canonically bitten people, which is about the only thing they have in common. Bryony’s favourite pastime is making stuffed animal for her niece. I’m sure there more, but my mind’s blanked.

I guess WCM's genre is *takes deep breath*: Speculative urban fantasy coming of age YA fiction. Probably. I'd love to see someone try to put that on a genre chart. Snakeyes is truly that. And draw them all Dingo. Draw them all! Why horses? Pfft. Cute and awesome! I ... am trying to think of some of mind but I'm not sure you'd be interested. XD

In time, my friend. In time. Snakeeyes is more relatable that I intended him to be, tbh.
Horses. Believe it or not, I have a semi-logical answer for that. It starts with Snakeeyes - the man's a pirate, born and raised. And pirates (at least in the Corvidae world) trust nothing but the moon and their ships. Snakeeyes is awfully fond of ships. Considering the when the pirates are ashore they don't really leave their city (and I'm going to have to make a Tatterstreet moodpboard, because I adore it), they have no need for horses. And horses, with their tempers and personalities and heavy hooves are about as far from ships as you can get. Therefore, they are very untrustworthy. There aren't any horses in the Gorge, either. And then we have Rook, who hasn't seen horses since he was six years old. Rook learns much of what he knows from Snakeeyes and Slate, so at some point, I figure Snakeeyes more or less told him that horses were not to be trusted, and he just went with it. Horses are also bigger than Rook, with big teeth and powerful hooves. All those things make them threats, therefore Rook doesn't want anything to do with them.
Are you kidding? I'd LOVE to hear!

Are you kidding? I'd LOVE to hear!Him being relatable isn't necessarily a bad thing. XD XD That's great. Please tell me that comes up at some point. Huuum. I'm about to go into names who you know nothing about. X') We all need to do that draft exchange sometimes so I get familiar with all the names. Will tends to sing under her breath when she's walking around town (something I've lately picked up while walking around school, only not under my breath). Reginald and Tommy used to play video games on Tommy's computer. Reginald is actually better at them than Tommy. I have color sets for each character: Will (purple and green), Reginald (yellow and orange), Susan (brown and blue and red), Mary (grey and light blue and violet), Tommy (various blues), Riley (green), Leo (orange), Tristan (bronze). They tend to wear these colors or I have their eye color as them. Or in the case of Tommy, he uses Sapphire as his computer password. There's an old set of train tracks which runs through Will's home town and things tend to really be some small focus around them. They're a setting, even if only in passing, in many of the books. Susan is named for the Discworld character - or rather, I thought Susan was a cool name. Mary was just me casting around for names and it fell back on ones from the Bible. Tommy and Riley were also stripped from books but now I can't remember which ones. And Leo is for the constellation. Tristan is just an example of me wanting another 'T' name. Within universe, the significance for this is very, very little. I did, however, purposefully give Will a real name which meant 'gift' and was slightly unusual so she'd have to change it. Will, as well as most of her other siblings, is adopted. Susan and Mary are not, though I'm sure someone's going to think they are. Tommy, Leo, and Reginald are part of a very large family. I mean LARGE. They say they're all cousins but they're pretty distantly related. Riley is an only child of a single mother. In a sense, so is Tristan.

Ooh, all very interesting! They all seem like good, soft kids. I want to protect them.
Son entire facts for you! And a couple more Snakeeyes facts for you, since he’s your favourite; - Snakeeyes and the Ghost (who you haven’t met yet) are related, but neither of them know it. - he hasn’t practiced his traditional fighting style in over fifteen years. - if he’d stayed in Tatterstreet (traditional home of the pirates), he probably would have become King. He has the skill for it, and would have gotten the following for it.
And some others; - Rook and the Ghost are the only characters with tattoos. The Ghost is the only one with a visible tattoo. - Slate speaks three languages. One of which is the Ghost’s native language. They definitely talk trash behind everyone else’s backs. - Brennan’s eyes remind Rook of summer. It’s cannon. They’re hopelessly in love with each other. - while out of all the siblings, Ari looks the most like Reagan, many people point out how much Rook looks like him (they both rock the man bun, so there’s that.)

What is this mysterious Ghost oooooo.
So what are they tattoos of?
Huuum. I didn't think of hair styles much for my characters. Tommy probably has long hair, which he has in a ponytail. Will has her hair cut into a bob. Susan's hair is either braided or wildly out of control. Mary's is just usually braided. Riley's is dyed various colors to within an inch of its life and often styled in whatever way he thought looked most prominent. Reginald's and Leo's are just ... boring and short. Tristan I haven't figured out yet.

Ah. The Ghost. Real name yet to be revealed. Current King of Tatterstreet and ruler of pirates. Absolute scoundrel. Kind of a jerk. Great fun to write. Plays an inmportabt role in Book 2
Rook has a raven tattoo (because symbolism wink wink nudge nudge) and the Ghost has a snake tattoo.
They all sound great! Can’t wait to see more of them!

Ooooo. o.o I'm looking forward to hearing about The Ghost.
Is the snake symbolic too?
You will, you will. I ... can hardly believe I have book 1 and 2 written. It seems like only yesterday I was furious at myself for not having the second book written.

The snake is symbolic! It’s eritten in the chapter he’s introduced in, but I cannot remember it off the top of my head.
Wow. Two books! That’s insane, Mint. Well done!
