So I'm rereading Thunder & Shadow, and I didn't like Ivypool being chosen as a mentor again. However, I do like the bond between her and Twigpaw since it's not really something we see often anymore. But since Twigpaw felt unwanted and was separated by her sister, did Ivypool get chosen for this reason on purpose, even though there's plenty of other warriors who needs an apprentice? Ivypool seems very protective of Twigpaw, and even kicked Needletail's ass at one point lmao. But after rereading some scenes about them, I can't help but wonder if Bramblestar noticed the tensions between Dovewing and Ivypool when they were younger, so he took this as an opportunity for Ivypool to help support Twigpaw.

Probably? It's implied that Ivypool was able to confide in Bramblestar later on after the final battle. He talks about her sometimes, like her ferocity, and skills, and how she felt about being in the DF. And before that he was the cat she told about the trainees cause he understood how she felt. Not wanting them to be punished for being misguided like her. So I wouldn't be surprised if he also knew about the tensions between her and Dove when they were younger. I think being and outcast and being in a strained relationship with her sister makes her very suited mentor for Twigpaw. Along with her skills as a warrior, I think their relationship is developing well.
