over the centuries, countless tales of the supernatural have been spun, stories passed through faded ink and ominous whispers during the night; stories of pale, vicious creatures who hunt in the shadows, feeding off the blood of innocents to sustain eternal youth and beauty. once, when the world was younger, people still feared the darkness. they still hurried inside as soon as the sun dipped below the horizon for shelter from the things that go bump in the night, from the most infamous of all legends: vampires.
but then things changed. advances in technology and science thrust human civilization into a new era, an era where superstition and magic had no place. and so the stories were lost, dismissed as little more than the imaginations of ignorant, fearful people. yet the vampires lived on, still lurking in the shadows. there is one tale, however, that never made it to any books - the true story of how vampires came to be in this world.
fair warning: it should come as no surprise that the origin of such terrible monsters is not a pretty one.
our story starts simple: with a family, one thousand years ago. not just with any family, though; these were certainly no ordinary humans. the castaleres and their six children were all powerful witches. but two were more powerful than the rest, for the number three is a sacred number to witches, and in a bloodline, children tended to be strongest at multiples of three - in this case, the third child and the sixth child. the third child was a boy named loren (placeholder still? idk), the sixth child a girl named livia.
loren and livia, however, could not have been more different. loren was indeed more powerful than his siblings, but he was something else entirely - a siphon. a witch who had no magic of his own but could absorb it from other sources. siphons were seen as disgraceful amongst witches, a glitch in the system that rules every third child is more powerful. in short, being a siphon was seen as a curse of the worst kind. livia, on the other hand, was not just stronger than her siblings. she was the strongest, the most powerful witch to have ever walked the earth. compared to her siblings, her magic was seemingly limitless; and so she threw herself into studying magic, practicing spells from a young age that even older, more experienced witches had trouble casting.
and one fateful day, she invented the spell to end all others - one that granted her immortality.
unfortunately, livia had never really gotten along very well with her older siblings even before this spell; they were jealous of her special abilities, and of the fact that their mother so clearly loved her best, often neglecting her other children in favor of advancing livia's magical studies. so when they discovered her newfound eternal life, the loathing and envy already bubbling inside of them began to boil over.
envy, of course, is one of the seven deadly sins - and the story of the castaleres serves as a testament to the fact that it is certainly not a sin to be taken lightly.
you see, livia had a weakness - a human girl named anastasia from a nearby village she loved. but the poor girl had no idea that her lover was anything but human. that is, until loren had an idea. he promised his other siblings that he had a plan to convince livia to share her immortality spell with them; however, he did not share the details of his plan, simply assuring them that he would take care of it.
that night, loren kidnapped anastasia, then went to livia and told her that if she did not make him and his siblings immortals like herself, then she would never see anastasia again. loren was, unfortunately for livia, very thorough about thinking through every possible situation, meticulous down to every last detail so that his plan would work perfectly. only he knew anastasia's location, and he had seriously wounded her - not so much that she was certain to die, but if she didn't receive any medical attention within a couple hours then she would bleed out. livia was left with no other option but to give her siblings what they so desired.
when livia had cast the spell creating her own immortality, she had harnessed the power of an incredibly rare celestial event - a comet passing overhead that would not return for another thousand years. but with her siblings demanding their immortality within a strict time limit, livia had been forced to work with other magical ingredients to create a slightly different version of her original immortality spell; and one such ingredient she used was human blood, for its potency in life magic. the spell she cast on her siblings was a far less pretty one - it required stabbing them each in the heart with a wooden dagger dipped in her own blood. thankfully, her spell seemed to work successfully, as they all came back to life as planned, as newly-made immortals.
loren took livia to anastasia and they were reunited - and for a little bit, everything seemed to have turned out okay, with a reluctant peace between the siblings now that they had gotten what they wanted. though their access to general magic had been largely repressed by the immortality spell, as livia had gone against the balance of nature in creating them, the siblings were surprised to find that they could still access some magic in a limited form, now confined to a single specific ability. but the peace could only last so long. unfortunately, within a few days, the castaleres discovered that something had gone wrong in the spell that made the rest of them immortals. there was a hollow emptiness inside, a burning thirst and hunger for a substance they could not name, that nothing seemed to satiate.
in the end, though, a tragic accident led them to discover what it was that they so craved as a result of their altered immortality spell: human blood. one night, anastasia had secretly wandered from her village to visit livia, but on her journey there she ran into loren. given their last encounter, she became terrified upon seeing him and quickly started to back away - but in the dark, she accidentally tripped over a stray root and ended up cutting herself. loren rushed over to help her, but as he did, he tasted her blood in the air from her wounds, and an uncontrollable urge suddenly ripped through him. before he fully realized what he was doing, he grabbed anastasia and sank his teeth into her neck, draining the life from her in less than a minute.
by the time livia and her other siblings arrived on the scene, it was too late - anastasia was dead. yet when loren tried to explain what had happened, livia didn't believe him; she thought that loren must have killed anastasia on purpose, convinced that he did it because he had always been jealous of her and couldn't stand to see her happy. angry at loren and angry at herself for having messed up the spell in the first place, livia did what any incredibly powerful teenage witch who had just lost her love would do; she placed a curse on loren and the rest of her siblings. a curse that said that every night, they would lose control of themselves, stripping their humanity away so that nothing would be left but cold-blooded, vicious killers.
with her curse complete, she ran off, leaving her family in chaos, not caring that she had just created the most powerful and dangerous supernatural creatures to have ever roamed the earth. did she realize she had just screwed over the rest of humanity? well, yes - but what was it to her? the love of her life was already dead; so if her siblings wreaked havoc on other innocents for all of eternity, that simply wasn't her problem.
