I like white moscato myself. Red wine is usually too dry. Pink is a nice in-between.

It's one of those days, Rowen thought, as he stepped outside. The sky was overcast, covered in vacant clouds that blotted out the sun, yet somehow, heat still permeated through the atmosphere, covering the town like a blanket of smog. He was used to hot, dry summers, but here, the air felt like it was sticking to his skin. In Brazil, that would indicate a storm was on its way. In California, it just meant it was muggy. Even when he was wearing cargo shorts and a white t-shirt, it was vaguely uncomfortable outside, especially with his backpack slung over his shoulder. He’d packed the necessities, a toothbrush, two days’ worth of clothes, and whatnot. It wasn’t the first time he’d needed to ship everything separate, and he knew it would take longer to arrive than him. There wasn’t much that he was expecting; three boxes total for the year. He was used to living and traveling light, and he honestly preferred not to be tied down by material or worldly objects. Rowen, having arrived at the airport about an hour ago, had taken a taxi to the grocery store where he worked, and dropped off his schedule for the year so his supervisor could coordinate shifts. He’d said that he would email him when it was finalized, which was fine with Rowen. Glancing at his watch, the numbers ten and thirty didn’t mean anything at first. His heart skipped a beat when he remembered he was supposed to move in to the new flat at ten.
After a hot, anxious second, Rowen started walking quickly toward the university, which was luckily only four blocks away. It took him about fifteen minutes to get there and another five to find the right building. It was sharp and modern, a blinding combination of sleek white paint and glass. It would probably look like meringue when it rained. This thought brought a sideways smile to his face. Perhaps this wouldn’t be so bad, although after he was kicked out from their apartment by his “friends”, he wasn’t certain he was ready to make new ones. Still, there would be ten of them. He couldn’t possibly like them all, right? Don’t get your hopes up. If he was anything, it was self-aware. He latched onto people and hated himself for it, but there was no changing it. His sister had always said he was like a bird, a silly baby bird that didn’t know how to fly and didn’t want to learn. Mari meant it in a joking way, trying to be funny, but it was the truth. “You see the good in people, and you even like the bad, too.” She sounded like she admired him for this, but it had always hurt him more than anything.
Rowen shook his head, disrupting his train of thought. He had to give a good impression to each person, and if he started thinking about anything else, all hope for that would be gone. Rowen walked in the front entrance, pulling a folded piece of paper from his pocket. Glancing at the address, he went over to the elevator and pressed the button. It lit up at his touch, and he reveled in the drop in his stomach when the elevator moved. The doors sidled open at the fourth floor and Rowen stepped into the hall, a window to his right, and a long line of doors to his left. He made his way down the hall, counting the numbers as he went, hoping his lucky shoes would help get him through this. They weren’t really that special, just a pair of Vans, but Mari had gotten them for him for his first year in the U.S. They were light blue and had pink laces, neither of which was his favorite color, but they reminded him of cotton-candy, and in turn, of his sister. She was so grounded and intelligent and beautiful for a sixteen-year-old, and Rowen wished he could always be around to protect her, but she didn’t really need him, not since she turned ten. She was independent, and inspired him to be like that too. It was easier imagined than displayed.
Rowen saw a woman standing outside a door looking slightly distraught. “Oh, are you alright?” He asked, his accent more prominent than normal after being home all summer. He stopped beside her, taking note of the door. This was the flat number written on his paper. Was she new too? “Are you moving in here today?” He asked, glancing at the cat ears on her hood. He grinned and figured he should introduce himself, “My name is Rowen. I’m going in there, too.” He held out his hand to shake, feeling proud of himself for saying so much, so calmly. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad. He could do this. “And you are?”
