the Witching Hour ❝a witch ought never to be frightened in the darkest forest ❞
Those New Orleans witches are all sorts of talented. Crafty things made of equal parts patience and cunning. Their magic is as lethal as it is enchanting. Their covens are older than the city and hold twice its mystery. If I could give you a piece of advice it'd be this: don't gamble with witchfolk you'll always lose.

The story of the First Witch changes based on who you ask. Some'll tell you she stole her power from the demon. Others'll insist she tricked him with her cunning and wit. A rare few say she ate that demons heart. But I'll tell you the version I like best.
Once upon a time, when the world was young, humans and demons lived side-by-side. Demons were powerful, filled up with magic and spite and hungry for souls. They were quite fond of tricking humans into giving up those souls in exchange for some matter that was trivial to all demons: money, health, prosperity. There was one girl who had no need for any of these things, so when a particularly hungry demon came knocking on her door looking to strike a deal, she turned him away.
His fellow demons warned him. "Not that one," they all said "She won't give up her soul for anything. Best to find someone else." The demon took this as a challenge however, and vowed to take her soul, one way or another. He returned the next day, offering the girl all sorts of riches. Silk, diamonds, fast horses, gold, prize hunting dogs.
She turned down all this and said "I'll tell you what, I've got some wood to chop for winter and if I stand here talking to you all day it'll never get finished. Give me a little magic and I'll make the wood chop itself, that way you can show me what else you have to offer."
The demon agreed, granting the girl a drop of his magic which she used to bewitch the ax to chop the wood all by itself.
The demon continued showing the girl all the treasures he could give her if only she'd sell him her soul. Marriage to a prince, rare and precious jewels, a falcon faster than lightning. Again, she turned all of it down and said "I have some sweeping to do and I can't stand here talking to you or it'll never get done. Give me a little magic and I'll make the floors sweep themselves, then you can show me what else you have to offer."
So the demon gave her a little more of his magic which she used to bewitch the broom to sweep the floors all by itself.
On and on things went like this until the wood was chopping itself, the floors sweeping themselves, the dinner making itself, the tea boiling itself, the laundry cleaning itself, the furs selling themselves at the market. Until the demon had no magic left to give the girl. Drained of his power, he turned to dust. And the First Witch was born.

As I'm sure you've already guessed this roleplay takes place in modern-day New Orleans, Louisiana. Three covens have divided the city, interacting only when necessary. Demons━ few and far between as they may be ━roam freely, avoiding the attention of witches lest they be banished back to the Underneath or forced into servitude.
Contrary to popular culture, witches aren't ugly old hags riding around on broomsticks with pointy hats, casting spells via wands. No, the witches of modern day are just like anyone else. They go to school, play football, work at law firms and coffee shops. They'd be just like anyone else were it not for the magic in their veins.
Every witch is born with a specific kind of magic. This could be anything from growing flowers to lighting fires to raising the dead or seeing the future. It's not uncommon for several witches to have the same kind of magic, seeing as much of it is hereditary to begin with (although new kinds of magic crop up frequently in blood-lines).
Despite this, a lot of small spells and cantrips can be used by all witches regardless what specific kind they're born witch. For instance, a necromancer is capable of casting a small spell to wash the dishes or turn on the lights. These kind of spells are called small magic, as it's usually small, menial things they can perform and range anywhere from cleaning the kitchen to picking up small objects.

We can't discuss witches without discussing covens. A witches coven is composes a good amount of their identity, kind of like Hogwarts houses, except for the rest of your life. Not all witches join a coven, but those who do should think about their decision carefully as there is no turning back. Covens are a witches family, whether that's literal or not. Lives and loyalties are dedicated to a witches coven. Most end up in the coven of their parents or grandparents or so on. Some witches (especially those whose parents were covenless or only recently discovered their magic) will make the mistake of joining the first coven to approach them, even if their values and beliefs don't line up.
Speaking of which, a coven members will adopt the beliefs and values of their covens. Usually, the coven leaders embody these values, however there have been cases of leaders dissenting from the old ways. This can lead to members either overthrowing the leader or leaving the coven altogether. It's not a pretty picture.
Covens are a bit like wolf packs in the sense that moving from one area to another doesn't necessitate joining a new coven. Your pack is your pack from now until the end of time (or until you leave or are kicked out).

Demons: High, Lesser, and Half
Demons come in all shapes and sizes. Big and small. Hairy and scaly. Creepy and crawly. Spikes and wings and fangs. You name it. Even though a demon can look and act like justabout anything, there is one big distinction between all demons and that is that all demons can be placed into at least one of two categories: high or lesser. Half- demons exist, but that's a subject matter we'll delve into later.
Lesser demons, or common demons, possess considerable variation in just about anything. While it's common knowledge that no two demons are the same, this is especially true for lesser demons. That is to say, they can look like just about anything but weirder. The defining feature of lesser demons, however, is their intelligence. They are known for being stupid, easily tricked, and single-minded with a tendencies toward pack mentalities. Lesser demons enjoy hunting in groups, whether it's because they like the company or can't function otherwise is unknown. They also lack anything beyond basic communication skills, making them poor conversation partners, but excellent servants as their capacity to rebel is limited to minor screw-ups. They're a lot like animals in that they can understand and execute basic commands, but anything more is beyond them.
High Demons do not vary in appearance nearly as much as their lesser counterparts. All High Demons are mostly human in appearance. They are bipedal with five fingers and toes, the overwhelming majority are also in possession of horns sprouting from their heads. However, for some, that's where the similarities stop. Unlike lesser demons, High Demons are marked by their superior intelligence and mastery of magic. While most lesser demons are capable of small feats of magic, such as glamour, High Demons are in control of a wide variety of magic. This is the most noticeable difference between witches and demons. Whereas witches are limited to a specific kind of magic, High Demons are not. Finally, as opposed to lesser demons favoring packs, High Demons are creatures of solitude, often preferring to be alone.
Known High Demons: Adramelech Deumos Rodney Applejuice
Summoning and binding. Let's just get this out of the way first, High Demons are the only ones that can be summoned and bound. Summoning demons requires a pre-existing skill set. Witches below a certain power or training level should NOT attempt to summon a demon. I don't care how cool it makes you look in front of your friends! Here's the thing, the summoning isn't the part where you need to be powerful. You have to be able to control whatever demon you choose to summon. The rule is this: your level of magical ability must be equal to or greater than the demon you summon, otherwise they're gonna overpower you and start stepping on your head and, like, I don't know, give you a wedgie? It won't end nicely, is what I'm saying.
So! Let's get into the nitty-gritty of it. How does one summon a demon? Binding and summoning are just about one and the same really. To summon or bind a demon, you must first know that demon's seal. A demon's seal is the symbol that, when invoked, transports the demon directly to you and binds them to your will. Centuries ago, many bound demons simply for companionship or a helping hand around the house. Seals limit the demon's power and, essentially, bind them to your will. However, seals are directly tied to the summoner's own magical ability. A powerful witch can easily control a High Demon with no trouble. But should a witch summon a demon above their skill level then the seal is next to useless. A seal that is damaged can also be easily overcome and grants the bound demon leniency. Finally, an erased or broken seal free's the demon entirely.
Known Bound and Heirloom Demons: Beb Mikolt Miroslav
Note: Summoning and binding a demon without proper authorization is ILLEGAL and can result in punishment by local covens.
Free demons are dangerous. How does a demon get free? Two ways:
First, if a bound demon's seal is broken or erased they are free to wander the human world for as long as they please. At least, until they are banished back to the realm from whence they came. Or if they choose to go back. Unfortunately, fascination with the human world often keeps these demons from returning.
Second, if a demon manages to overpower their master and kill them, they'll be free. A proper seal prevents this from happening, but, as we've already discussed, seals aren't invulnerable. Another good reason not to go around summoning demons more powerful than yourself.
Known Free Demons: none
Half-demons are the offspring of humans and High Demons or witches and High Demons. They are volatile and controllable and powerful. Be careful, most half-demons look human but often have a second form revealing their demonic nature. Like demons, half-demons are powerful and possess more magic then your average run-of-the-mill witch, but not as much as a High Demon.
If discovered, half-demons should be put down immediately as they could pose a future threat.
Known Half-demons: none Banishing and weaknesses. Ask your local bog witch about a demons weaknesses and the best strategy for banishing them.
Glamours, a powerful and subtle form of magic used to disguise the true form of demons. It gives the illusion that the wearer is human, a trick of the eye to help the wearer blend in. This magic is mostly used on heirloom demons to hide their true image from natural humans. A glamour makes them appear as perfectly human, and since it is often first crafted by their first summoner they take on the appearance of whatever race or ethnicity that summoner was.

Recently, New Orleans has been seeing a series of murders whose sole victims are witches. The covens have yet to uncover who or what is behind these gruesome events and if the murders are even connected to each other at all.

[ Oh hey Mags! Glad to see you!
So like. Hmm. I'm trying to think here. How rare are half-demons and covenless witches? Do many of them chose a coven or naw?
Can I bring back Scotty Hughes and can he wear his Rave outfit this time when crashing the witch's party. ]

{ MAGS! WHAT'S UP!
half-demons are rare. and covenless witches are fairly common, some may choose to join a coven, but others could remain covenless well into old age. it's all a matter of personal circumstance
you can bring back scotty, but he's only allowed to have one (1) glowstick }
