Sooo, a few days earlier I finished reading the new novella "Spottedleaf's Heart". I was actually really excited for this mini book to come out, hoping to see more development and maybe some more interaction with her and Firepaw, but unfortunately, this isn't at all what I got.
First chapters in, I thought I was reading about another character, since Spottedkit's bossy nature made no sense to the well know sweet and kind Spottedleaf. She was so... off in this novella, her attitude and easily "triggered" nature is not at all what I saw in Spottedleaf. Especially with her confrontations with Bluefur.
Of course, her eagerness and determination to become a warrior was not something I enjoyed either, because it's been stated many times Spottedleaf always wanted to be a medicine cat. Although she still chose the Medicine cat life, it was due to Thistleclaw, which really disappoints me. I thought she could make this decision herself, but no, it had to be due to her being terrified of warriors because of the fighting, although many have told her this was not what being a true warrior was about.
Now, let's talk about the most controversial subject, SpottedXThistle.
This couple is so weird to me. It was so un-needed, the novella could have been fine, better, without it. It would have saved so much more space to learn more about the star of the novella, Spottedpaw, rather than a pushed in reason for Thistleclaw to be in the DF. If they really needed to make a better reason for Thistleclaw, why didn't they just make a novella for him?
I'll admit, when reading this novella, although really off with the youngness of Spottedkit, I didn't think much of it? Since there's been big age gaps between other cats in the series, although a WarriorXKit kinda made me a bit uncomfortable. They are cats, and sexually mature at around 6 months ( moons ), but the characters are so humanized it feels off.
I don't really understand how Spottedpaw fell for Thistleclaw, since they are soooo different in personalities, Spottedleaf's kind and loving nature vs. Thistleclaw's abrasive and merciless behavior. I think it would have been better to have just made them friends who respected each other, Thistleclaw seemed to love Spottedpaw's ambitious and eagerness to become a warrior, and also she seems to admire his skills. Thistleclaw could have saw this as an opportunity to train her like he did Tigerpaw, into a strong, real warrior, and then be disappointed and disgusted by her choice to be a medicine cat, and her disproval of his ways.
But no... They had to fall in love. It was so quick and ended so fast, it felt so forced. Thistleclaw felt so out of character. I don't believe he would consider having another mate, after the tragedy of Snowfur scorned him. There's no way he could've gotten over her, he never did, and that's what made him spiral out of control. Thistleclaw had NO reason to be included in Spottedleaf's story.
I never thought of ThistleXSpotted as ****philia, because there's been times were this has happened before, I thought it was an odd choice, but not significant. I just thought they were a couple, although Thistleclaw was manipulative, they shared feelings, and Thistleclaw didn't do anything without Spottedpaw's consent. Spottedpaw LOVED him.
Until Vicky's response came out. This got me so upset, REALLY? I liked Thistleclaw, I thought he was a sad, yet terrifying character, but now I just feel sick. No way would Thistleclaw be this low, he wouldn't do this, especially since he had Snowfur. There's been SO many times were cats have been in love with much younger cats, and this was fine according to the Erins, but now THIS is DF worthy.
That was a poor excuse for the backlash for the book, I have no idea how this got through HC.
Despite all my ranting, this was an OK book. Without the controversy, it's mediocre. It's nice and has good descriptive writing, but, this just doesn't feel like a story for Spottedleaf. Which really sucks because I was so excited for this book.
