I'm afraid somebody else might take my place when I wake up I'm afraid somebody else might end up being me this is a mxm plot. except if you want a nonbinary character which can also be female-aligned and/or dfab (I love nb characters) these two character will be high school friends. char a comes from a well-known family, but it's not well-known that they're actually hunters who protect normal people from the supernatural. they are known for being model hunters among the community, and they have high morale standing. however, some family members are more eager to go further with "protecting" people than they are worried about smearing the family name. char a is one of the nicer ones of the family; they believe supernatural creatures who have killed should be "rehabilitated" and given a second chance, but this takes too much time and care for it to be realistic. char b is their best friend. They are a normal human; trust me, they've passed every test char a gave them without even knowing what was happening (i.e. char a "spilling" a glass of secretly holy water on them.) however, one fateful night, a vampire bites char b in revenge for hunters killing their friends/family. before char b knows it, they're turning into a vampire. they do something at their own house (maybe attack a family member, bite someone, etc.) and get kicked out. they seek refuge at char a's house, not knowing they're hunters and not quite having accepted/figured out they are a vampire themself, and char a may/may not know they are a vampire yet either. their family welcomes them to stay until the issue blows over (after all, they've had this kid over every weekend for years) and think nothing of it. however, char b only starts attacking weirder and weirder and gets hungrier and hungrier. eventually, someone is going to find out. please note I would prefer char b. some elements of the plot are based on supernatural (the hunters)

Lukas sure was glad it was a weekend. There was no school to worry about tomorrow, no homework to complete, and his family hadn't assigned him any missions until Sunday-- at least, so he was promised. However, there were always emergencies. Sometimes things got out of hand, but lately they had been lucky with light cases. Other relatives sometimes traveled cross-country for cases, but considering he was still in school, he was excused from anything beyond an hour drive away. So he planned to relax and play video games until 5am in the morning. It was his off day after all. He would have invited [char b] had they been feeling well, but whatever. He didn't want to get sick anyway; that would meaning missing more school and missing out on cases. He would rather not do either, or worse: be forced to go on a case or go to school while he was sick. Now, it wasn't like he enjoyed killing monsters or anything-- he didn't even get to brag about it at school-- but there was gratification in saving people. He rarely got thanked (unless you count the ghosts thanking him,) but he knew it was good work. No, he would rather not have to kill monsters, but it wasn't like he could kindly ask them to stop killing/eating people so everyone could go about their way. He'd thought of it before, but those conversations-- mostly just him shouting at a monster, trying to reason with it while they were fighting-- never seemed to do anything. He didn't dare bring it up with family; that'd be like trying to discuss politics!

All Hartford could understand was that he needed to leave, had to leave. His father had never been so irate with him, his mother never so dismayed. What he had done was so utterly dumbfounding to both him and his parents that he had no wish to think on it. It was so unlike him to act out like that, especially against his younger sister... but no, he couldn't dwell on it. He had to get out of that house as quickly as possible. But where would he go? It's not like he had some secret apartment he could find solace in and he didn't have family in the area. Certainly none of his friends would let him come over at almost one in the morning. Lukas, though... Lukas was different; always had been, always would be. Hartford and Lukas had been thick as thieves since they met in freshman year and got over their original discomfiture. Now it was senior year and almost nothing had changed. They had grown closer, if anything, but Hartford always felt that something was missing between them. Thinking no further about that missing piece, Hartford packed most of his clothes up into a suitcase and shoved the rest of his essentials into his backpack before quickly making his way out the door - narrowly avoiding another screaming match with his father. It took a while to get to Lukas's house since he had no car and no other mode of transportation so when he finally got there he was exhausted and had more than a few tears drying on his face. As he walked up the steps to the expansive house, he wiped off the salty tears as best as he could and then rang the doorbell. Hopefully Lukas was home instead of just his parents or his siblings.

His cousin-- an elder by two years and in town to help him on Sunday with his case-- actually saw Hartford first, but seeing as Hartford looked like a complete wreck, she'd rather not have the awkward conversation that followed. She didn't know him that well; after all, she'd only been over a few times, but most times, he'd also been there. She was banking on the fact she had only looked for a split second that he hadn't seen her.
"Lukas! Your boyfriend is here!" she shouted down the stairs.
Lukas paused the game. "Thanks! I'll get it!" he responded with habit, but wait, he didn't have a boyfriend. (Yet.) Well, she had to mean a friend, then, but he hadn't invited anyone over, especially not in the wee hours of the morning.
He marched upstairs. He was obviously looked tired by the time he got to the door. Man, it was late. He unlocked it and opened it-- all the way, mind you. If it was a friend of his, there was no question they were coming inside-- and was very much confused to see Hartford had been crying. He looked like a mess, and there was no car parked on the street or in the driveway. "Did you walk all the way here?" he asked, worried and also finding it a small bit hilarious. Who on earth would drop him off at this time of night?

Hartford hadn't heard what Lukas's cousin had said inside but if he had, there would have been a large blush on his cheeks. Not that he necessarily minded the comment, it was just that he wish things like that would actually transpire between them. However, when Lukas opened the door he had nothing on his cheeks but those same dried tears.
"Yeah... I- I did something and my dad kicked me out. I need a place to stay," he said sheepishly as he looked down at his shoes. Hartford had stayed over at Lukas's house for more than a week at a time but he knew this was different. His parents had made him leave the house for snapping at his little sister and Hartford had no clue how Lukas's parents would react to that. They were nice folk but people had to draw a line somewhere.
"I only need to stay somewhere for a few nights, until I can find somewhere I can stay long-term..."

Lukas nodded. "Okay my cousin's in the guest room right now, but there's the couch downstairs. Or you could use a sleeping bag or something. Stay 'til whenever," he answered. He was sure his parents wouldn't mind; whatever Hartford had been kicked out about, maybe his parents would forget soon or realize how stupid they were.
Speaking of parents, they were probably asleep. Hopefully they wouldn't mind that Hartford had come over on such short notice, and without asking them. Considering he had a hunt Sunday, he should have said no, but he didn't even have a second thought about having Hartford stay here until his parents took him back. He wasn't going to wake his parents up (because they were probably more likely to be angrier about getting woken up than Lukas inviting someone over without asking, so he'd just wait until the morning to tell them.) "Wanna talk downstairs? It's kind of cold..." he asked. Doorways were always so fun, but he'd rather not be standing in the door with his sweatpants on, getting cold.
Plus, he thought Hartford might want to talk about, you know, getting kicked out the house and everything. He was exhausted, but he wasn't so exhausted that he couldn't stay up a little later. He would've just been playing video games anyway.

Hartford nodded gratefully and entered the house, closing the door behind him and making sure to be quiet as he did so. The last thing he wanted was to wake up Lukas's parents and have them think that he was breaking in. After he slipped off his shoes he followed Lukas down to the basement and sat down on the comfortable, worn-in couch
Due to being over so much, the two boys pretty much had specific positions in place by now. Hartford's was curled up on one end of the couch, knees to his chest, watching whatever was on the TV. Lukas's was... all over the room, really. So, out of habit, Hartford brought his knees to his chest and rested his chin on them with a sigh. He knew the uncomfortable conversation about what happened was about to begin but he hoped that since it was with Lukas it wouldn't be as awkward.
"Let's get it over with."

Yes, he had to admit he wanted to know what happened. On one hand, he was just naturally curious. On another, he wanted to know what Hartford had done that had been so bad that his parents dared throw him out, and on the third-- yes, third hand, or maybe his foot-- he needed at least something to work with to explain to his parents why Hartford had to stay over and his parents shouldn't be trusted, and it needed to have a bit of truth to it.
He sat opposite to Hartford on the couch, taking on a "concentration" pose of leaning his elbow against the arm of the couch and his cheek on his fist. He laughed nervously when Hartford spoke. Lukas wasn't obvious to his discomfort. "You don't have to tell me. I'm not a cop or anything." Then againβ¦ his job had a similar themeβ¦ "I meanβ¦ we should probably talk about it at some point anywayβ¦"
