( so sorry this took so long, I've been down with a combination of the flu and horrid migraines, but I think (??) I'm back now. )
While she went to change, Damien collected what little was left in the room. It wasn't much, other than his collection of weaponry he really hadn't unpacked much and he'd spent the morning cleaning everything up, so he was done well before Alice stepped out. Still, it felt good to do something instead of just waiting. Passiveness made him anxious.
She opened the door and returned out into the room and he looked up, shaking his head. "I wasn't planning on it," he said. "Besides, you look just fine to me." Not like a princess, no, but then most people didn't. The women he ever spent time with certainly weren't. "And even if you did, nobody's going to be looking at you today, so you have nothing to worry about." He started towards the door, holding it open. "We have no time to waste. I've packed some food for us to eat along the way, we'll stop a few hours from here. Will you manage until then?"

Alice shrugged, obviously not convinced. She always tried to look her best, she was always worried about the way she looked. Whether she voiced her concerns or not depended on the circumstance or how she was feeling that day. Today though, was an odd one for her. Alice felt fine, so it was even more strange for her to even voice how she felt to Damien of all people. It's not that she disliked him persay, but he hasn't seemed to have taken too much of a liking to her.
Alice nodded as he held the door open for her in a sort of acknowledging way before she knit her eyebrows together slightly, "Why is it that no one will see me?" She asked, feeling quite stupid for asking the question as she felt she should know why already. But Alice had an excuse surely, she had just woken up. That was good enough reasoning for her.

"We're leaving early," Damien replied, stating the obvious. "People won't be out on the streets yet. And then we'll be riding over the countryside, it won't be busy. And you need to remember, Elise, that you're not a princess." The way he spoke what was not quite her name was a reminder in and of itself, but he pressed on anyway. "Even people we do come across won't be looking at you because they will have no reason to. You will pass unseen because, to the people you'll cross paths with, you're just as ordinary as anybody else and they have better things to pay attention to just as they have better things to look at than me."
It sounded harsh, but it was true and Damien depended on this truth daily. Nobody looked at just another young man, wandering through a town, if he were dressed in clothes that befitted a man of no more than decent standing. If he wore the clothes his father would have him wear, he would never blend in. People were attracted to wealth and found everything else boring, so as long as he wore clothes that drew no interest and kept the ring with his father's sigil on a cord around his neck instead of on his fingers, nobody paid him any mind. The same would be true for Alice, now.
