[[ that's alright, i left at around the same time as you anyway. ]] || Luke ||As Luke listened to Micah talk, he absentmindedly fed Zeus some owl treats, which the snowy owl pecked from his hand. The Slytherin couldn't help noticing how Zeus's dark yellow eyes, which were almost a pale, sunset orange, kept darting towards Sybil. Zeus was lovely with humans - always striving for attention or the extra fuss, but around small furry animals...not so much. He was fine with bigger cats but Luke could easily tell that all he wanted was to gobble Micah's little pet right up. Unlike Marshmallow, who was rather lazy by nature, Zeus was a skilled hunter, sometimes bringing back baby rabbits or rats from his evening flight. It was pretty clear that he wasn't being let out of his cage this journey.
''Well, there's always other excuses, even if the teachers find out,'' Luke reminded him, once he had flicked his attention back over to Micah, ''I, for one, think I'm pretty good at getting away with not doing my homework. There's always the classic ''I left it in the common room last night and it was gone when I got there this morning'' or ''I was so caught up with my extremely long potions essay that I simply could not find the time or energy to complete my homework, I hope you'll forgive me.'' He accompanied this final suggestion with a pair of mocking puppy-dog eyes.
''Oh, well, I don't know why everyone thinks Hufflepuffs are so bad,'' Luke said, in an attempt to reassure Micah, ''I quite like all that they stand for, actually. The ones that...don't quite fit into categories. They're neat.''
Luke smirked when Micah mentioned the name of a hamster he had once owned. ''I've never been great with names,'' the second-year admitted, ''but I've never had to name any pet before Zeus. We, as a family, have three Labradors, but Mum and Dad always named the dogs. I wanted something powerful...so I researched some names for a while until I found the right one.''

( fair enough omg )
Micah ;;
He watched as Sybil rose to her full height, back arching as she padded across the table again and hopped down into the seat next to Micah, curling into a tight ball and purring as she dozed off. He reached over to scratch his fingers against her back, before settling back down with his elbows on the table. His gaze was firmly on the owl, now, watching with vague amusement.
"Zeus is going to have a shock in a couple of months when Sybil gets bigger," he mused, mostly to himself. "Or a few years, even, when she starts to get to her full height."
She had a good five years left to grow, and it was extraordinarily amusing to see common behaviour traits that he'd read about. Fascinating, too. However, realising that Luke was speaking, he zoned back in and cast his memory back to pick up on what he'd almost missed.
"Ooh, fair enough," Micah grinned and nodded. "Those are good excuses. Thank you. Regarding Hufflepuff, hmm," his gaze flicked upwards in thought. "They do seem fascinating? But, like...books don't shed very much light on them and they tend to be sidelined."
That was the easiest way, he decided, to explain it. To be honest, though, houses just reminded him of some sort of form class system, and it wasn't so bad. Maybe a little weirder because of the fact that the houses clung to certain traits and such.
"Zeus was a good choice," he smiled slightly, "very good. Extensive research does help, but I think it suits him well."

(well, I'm not sure he'd just "invite" in but if she came and sat down in his most likely empty compartment he wouldn't be like "no go away" lol. And then we could find some reason for them to interact past that as well. Lemme take a look at her info on the joining page.)

(also @ sweetclover: alright, I'll make a starter for Amhra I guess. Gimme a sec and I'll just edit this post into a starter.)
Amhra had wandered the isle of the train for a good little while until he had found a compartment that was entirely empty. He carefully set down the latched basket in which Jormungandr slept, then slung his luggage rather haphazardly on the rack. He flopped down on the seat, not bothering to be mannered or to try not to take up much space- he didn't anticipate company. Who would want to join him anyways? Most people would have already settled down with their friends, and everyone else, well... they generally avoided him. So he wasn't at all concerned that it could be detrimental as he unlatched the basket and opened the lid so that Jormungandr could go where he pleased.
"Behave yourself, and don't get stuck in any holes," he told the snake in Parseltongue, and if snakes could roll their eyes, he was sure his would have. It stayed in the basket for a few moments before slithering out- all seven feet- and slowly exploring the various corners of the compartment, tongue flicking with curiosity. Amhra sat back, crossing his arms across his stomach, and watched the serpent as it finally decided to coil up in the shadows under the seat opposite of him. After a few minutes, his attention wandered to the window, where he watched the English countryside go by. It was quite pretty, though nothing like the Appalachians in America. It almost seemed a little too picturesque- even the forests they passed didn't look all that wild. He hoped that what he had heard about the "Forbidden Forest" of Hogwarts was true, and that it was a bit more untamed than this.

With his sister's attention moved, Paxton glanced up to his things and squinted thoughtfully. Nah, Tessa wouldn't mind him ditching her, and so he slid past her without a word and exited the compartment, stretching his arms above his head and grimacing as he did so. The door behind him slid shut, and so his twin's voice was soon taken away, and he glanced up and down the hall. Okay, well, he could go for a wander - see if he could find any of his team...yeah, that would do.
The Slytherin made his way quietly, glancing at compartments for green ties, absently toying with the bracelets on his forearms as he searched. When he caught sight of a green tie with a face he wasn't familiar with, he faltered and stopped, before opening the door.
It was no secret that Pax's father had taught him Parseltongue from a young age, had always drilled it into him to be a 'true Slytherin', whatever that meant, but hearing someone unfamiliar speak it still caused him a jolt, always a panic reflex in wondering what if they're speaking to me? - but, he noted, upon a second glance, it was likely towards the snake. The very beautiful snake. He slid the compartment door closed behind him and sat opposite the stranger, gaze focused entirely on the snake.
"Hello, beautiful," he murmured in the snake's tongue, before looking up to the other person. Right! Social interaction. It took him a couple of seconds to work up a grin, and then he raised a single eyebrow. "I've never seen you before, and I know everyone in Slytherin," he leaned back comfortably, reminding himself to be as confident as possible. "Who are you?"

Amhra had been murmuring to himself about various things- mostly things he needed to get done- and had slipped into Parseltongue without thinking about it. He did that on occasion, not just with Parseltongue but with whatever foreign words he might know. He frequently had to stop himself from saying simple sentences in Spanish or Japanese, as he knew a minimal amount of both.
He was startled as he heard the door open behind him, jumping slightly but quickly regaining his composure as he looked at the newcomer: a Slytherin like him, and likely about his age, give or take a year. Damn. He should have expected this. He was almost surprised when the boy spoke to Jormungandr in Parseltongue as well, but he had heard that Slytherin House attracted Parseltongues.
"I'm... new," Amhra replied after a moment of sizing up the other boy. "Switched from... well, home-schooling. In America." (*insert Bandit Kieth from Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged*) The other boy, he noticed, looked quite a bit like him; similar delicate features, large almond-shaped eyes, messy hair- though it was in a different style- and he appeared to be about the same size. He was just a darker palette, with black hair, tanned skin, and gray eyes in contrast to Amhra's white hair, pale skin, and heterochromatic eyes. Odd.

It took Pax a couple of moments to consider this as he looked back to the snake, still smiling (though it softened whenever he glanced to the snake), still rather relaxed despite everything. After he processed this, he nodded slowly and flicked his gaze back to the newcomer.
"American," he said, "okay. That said," he shrugged lightly and adjusted how he sat until he was sitting cross-legged, arms resting on his knees and chin resting on his hands, "I was actually asking for your name. My name's Paxton Zylka. Call me Pax. I'm sixth year, and Quidditch Captain and Keeper."
That seemed like a fair introduction. It was similar enough to how Tessa often introduced the two of them - though she didn't hold the pride of Quidditch that he did. He felt some sort of pride towards his team, and so he felt better to introduce himself like that. It was something that worked better for him, personally.
Despite himself, Pax found his gaze drawn to the other boy's eyes. Huh. He tilted his head to the side and narrowed his own eyes a little, before flicking his gaze away and back to the stranger's snake.
"What's your name?" he asked the snake lightly, though he didn't hold much hope of it responding. It had taken his own snake at home a few months to work up the courage to respond to him, and she had been around him since she had been nothing but an egg. This snake didn't know him at all - he was just some stranger.

The corner of Amhra's lips curved into what could almost be a wry smile as Pax looked at his eyes- that was often peoples' reaction, and it amused the white-haired boy greatly. The smile faded as Pax turned to the snake, though- not for any discomfort, but just for the fact that smiling was not exactly Amhra's default.
Jormungandr just stared up at the Pax as he spoke, not fearful but rather, not especially caring. It gazed at him levelly for a moment, tongue flicking to take in his scent, and then retreated into his coils to ignore the light and the noisy humans above it.
"Jormungandr," Amhra answered for the serpent, in Parseltongue. "Named after the Midgard serpent of Norse legend." He looked at the snake for a moment, then back at Pax. "Me, I'm Amhra Kjos. Fifth year, never played Quidditch, and supposedly blessed by Odin." He gestured at his odd-colored eyes. In modern times, it was really more of a joke, but traditionally his family- who had come Norway originally- had believed that those in the family with differently-colored eyes carried the favor of Odin, and therefore had the "power of knowledge," often in the form of divination. The latter part had, supposedly, once been true, but Amhra had never experienced anything more than some particularly intense deja vu.

Jormungandr. That was definitely a fascinating name. He smiled politely at the retreating snake before, yet again, Pax let his gaze drift to the other boy, listening as he introduced himself. Amhra. An interesting name, he had to admit. He tilted his head back and gave a quiet snort.
"Yeah, well," he was still smiling, as impossible as ever to read. "My teta - uh, grandmother - would tell you stories about how you'd be sacrificed or something similar. She had heterochromia," he shrugged lightly. "Maybe you're hosting the spirit of a deity. I'd say Apep. Explains the Parseltongue, see?"
At least, his grandmother would probably say that. She'd always been one to try to scare her grandchildren with the stories she'd grown up with. It was a shame that she was gone, now - though he knew that his sister did not share the sentiment. She had not liked their grandmother, and had often sulked if they had to stay with her. Now that he thought about it, it was probably more to do with the fact that they would move from England or Poland to see their grandmother, which meant air travel.
"So, Amhra Kjos, why haven't you played Quidditch?"

Amhra frowned. "I can't say I recognize that name. Egyptian?" It sounded Egyptian. Couldn't be Norse- he was familiar enough with most deities at least enough to recognize it as being Norse, plus he'd never heard anything about those with heterochromia being sacrificed, so Egyptian or not, it must be a different culture of which Pax spoke.
At the other boy's question, Amhra shrugged. "Probably can't tell because of these robes, but I'm not exactly the athletic sort." He didn't mention that it also had a lot to do with his fear of heights. The thing about Amhra, though, was that like everything else in his life, that was contradictory. He could stand on the side of a cliff no problem, climb to the top of a swaying tree, or scale a mountainside by hand. But he could barely stand to look out the window of anything higher than the second or third floor of a building, and certainly couldn't lean over railing. Really, it seemed to come down to whether it was natural or not. Natural heights felt more steady somehow. And though he'd never actually ridden a broomstick, he imagined it would be much the same as a tall building. That was to say, utterly terrifying.

"Mm," the sound Pax made, he realised, wasn't specific enough. "Yes. Not a cultural thing, though. Just a family thing, more than anything else. When you have something running in a family that isn't exactly common, you have to make some sort of story up for it."
Okay, you didn't have to - but he liked how his grandmother thought. Perhaps it was simply because he got along better with his mother's side of the family; they were Egyptian witches and wizards, through and through. His father's side of the family...well, they were Polish witches and wizards, with complicated names and a refusal to teach the youngest Zylka children (Tess and Pax) anything about...anything.
"I see," he wasn't surprised nor disappointed, just kept on smiling faintly. "Fair enough. If you change your mind, try-outs are in a couple of weeks."

"I'll, uh... consider it," Amhra replied, returning flashing a small smile as well. He lapsed into silence, not really sure what else to say, and turned to again gaze out the window. It looked like the sky was beginning to darken now- he took that as a sign that they would arrive before too long, though he didn't really know how long the train ride was supposed to be. He couldn't imagine it would run too late though- they would still need time for dinner, settling into the common rooms, and still getting enough sleep to get up in time for breakfast the next day.
