TITLE: Red Rising Trilogy AUTHOR: Pierce Brown GENRES: Sci-Fi, Dystopia RATING: 8/5 Stars NOTES: An amazing trilogy, thrilling and well written. Takes place across the galaxy, though the first book is mainly stationary. Would reccomend to anyone, especially Sci-Fi lovers. REALLY good trilogy start to finish, and some of, if not the best books I've ever read.
TITLE: The Reckoners (Series) AUTHOR: Brandon Sanderson GENRES: Fantasy, Sci-Fi RATING: 5/5 NOTES: Most books have protagonists with powers. In this series, there's a twist. Powers have made people evil, and it's up to the normal people to defeat the "Epics" as they're called. Well written book, well worth the read with a different take on things than anything I've read.
TITLE: Dante Valentine (Series) AUTHOR: Lilith Saintcrow GENRES: Fantasy, Romance RATING: 4/5 NOTES: Romance, Demons and the devil. What more can I say? Dante is awesome, and this series is a fun read.
TITLE: Throne of Glass (Series) AUTHOR: Sarah J. Maas GENRES: Fantasy, Adventure, Adult RATING: 4/5 NOTES: Haven't finished the series but I absolutely love it thus far. In the first book, a slightly narcissistic assassin works her way up in an elimination style competition to gain her (kind of) freedom by working for the King. Definitely worth looking up and reading the bio on. There are more adult themes in this book.
TITLE: Provost's Dog Trilogy AUTHOR: Tamora Pierce GENRES: Fantasy RATING: 4.5/5 NOTES: Haven't read in a long time, but was very impressed by the first book. WELL worth looking up as well. Basically a newbie to law enforcement in a fantasy world. Great read!
TITLE: Battle Royale AUTHOR: Koushun Takami GENRES: Action, Sci-Fi Dystopian RATING: 4.5/5 NOTES: Japanese literature, this is a long book, much like the hunger games before the hunger games ever existed. 'Nuff said. More gory and violent than the hunger games. I believe there's also a Battle Royale movie.

yᴀɴɢ xɪᴀᴏ ʟᴏɴɢ ☼ Thanks for the recs! They've been added.
I got some of Maas' books for my birthday last month (aCoTaR). I still haven't gotten a chance to read them but I can't wait!
Reckoners also looks interesting to me. My taste in fiction is really picky (for instance, I like high fantasy, but not Tolkein/elvish/mage/etc kind). so it's hard for me to find premises I like, and most book recs don't work for me. Yet I'm keeping an eye on that one.

thank you c: I'm quite excited to put it together as well, something about recommending books makes me really happy. I have a feeling it's either going to be underwhelming and tiny or very intense and long.

I'm hoping I'll get back into reading again. I used to burn through 300+ pages of book in a single day. I used to read so much that buying books was useless since I'd run out of books so fast. So I'm glad you made this! Bookstores are crazy big and I never know where to look or if I'll like what I pick up!

here's my current list, might add more later, but it's long enough as is.
title: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe author: Benjamin Alire Sáenz genres: romance notes: This is that one book I recommend to everyone I meet. Features a sweet romance between two teenaged boys growing up in the 80's. A very character-driven book with very little plot outside of that, lovely writing and lovely characters. rating: 5/5
title: The Lunar Chronicles (series) author: Marissa Meyer genres: sci-fi, adventure notes: A series of fairy tale retellings with a sci-fi twist. Enjoyable, but predictable to anyone who reads more than just a little, or is particularly skilled at reading between the lines. Full of common tropes, but the characterisation is good and the universe is intriguing. rating: 3/5
title: Poison Study (series) author: Maria V. Snyder genres: fantasy notes: A story about the commander's poison-taster, magic and political conspiracy. A good read if you're looking for an epic fantasy that isn't difficult to read or massive. A very slight bit of romance, but by no means is it a focal point of the story but a byproduct of it. rating: 4/5
title: The Darkest Minds (series) author: Alexandra Bracken genres: sci-fi, dystopian notes: I've only read the first book but enjoyed it. Set in a world where children and young teens develop powers and are sent away to camps, and follows a group of these people as they escape. Somewhat predictable but an enjoyable ride. rating: 3.5/5
title: The 5th Wave (series) author: Rick Yancey genres: sci-fi notes: Again, I've only read the first book but it's a favourite of mine. Approaches the idea of an alien invasion in a way that, at first, seems like everything you've read before, but then turns it into something a little more interesting. rating: 4.5/5
title: An Ember in the Ashes (series) author: Sabaa Tahir genres: fantasy notes: So good. An epic fantasy based on how the Roman Empire worked, with all sorts of magic and beasts running around throughout. Great world building, great characters and a great plot. rating: 5/5
title: The Night Circus author: Erin Morgenstern genres: fantasy notes: Not a book for anyone looking for an easy read, but definitely worth the work. Possibly the most magical book I've ever read, with an interesting magic system and wonderful characters. It's told over several timelines and through several points of views and ways of expressing them (both second and third person, and I believe first as well though it's been a while). Highly recommended if you're willing to dedicate yourself to a book. rating: 5/5

Title: Terminal World Author: Alastair Reynolds Genre: Science fiction Notes: A really enjoyable story with what I thought was a really immersive world. The sense of mystery surrounding some aspects of the setting gave the universe it's set in a real sense of wonder. The main character was interesting. There is some violence and one of the characters uses a lot of bad language, in case that bothers anyone.
Title: A Hero of Our Time Author: Mikhail Lermontov Genre: Miscellaneous?? Notes: A fairly short 19th century novel set in the Caucasus, made up of several linked short stories, with a compelling and complex main character - prepare to be very annoyed with him by the time you're done! Some lovely descriptive passages also. I read the translation published by Penguin Classics. Without wishing to give too much away, be aware that one of the characters in The Fatalist sort-of attempts to shoot himself...
Title: Northanger Abbey Author: Jane Austen Genre: Miscellaneous Notes: Personally I found this book very, very funny. However, it helps if you are at least somewhat familiar with gothic novels, as a lot of the humour revolves around sending up the tropes of the gothic novels popular at the time it was written. You'll enjoy this if you like humour that involves social commentary.

TITLE: His Dark Materials AUTHOR: Philip Pullman GENRES: Fantasy NOTES: It's a series and the books are The Northern Lights (The Golden Compass in North America), The Subtle Knife, and the Amber Spyglass. The fantasy elements come from the existence of witches, talking bears, talking animals that function as an extension of yourself, etc. The series does take a negative stance of organized Christianity and some people don't like that about the series, but it's honestly worth a read. It's also inspired by Paradise Lost.

TITLE: The Bartimaeus Sequence (a trilogy and a prequel) AUTHOR: Jonathan Stroud GENRES: Fantasy, Alternate History NOTES: It's a middle-grade series that blends some fairly heavy themes and moral grey areas with lots of sarcasm and humor. The original trilogy is about an ambitious magical prodigy who steadily grows more corrupt as he climbs through the ranks of an oppressive government that heavily disadvantages non-magical commoners, a commoner who gets involved in a rebellion against said government only to become disillusioned with the rebellion's tactics, and a wise-cracking djinni who is forced to serve the magician. The prequel is a stand-alone about one of the djinni's earlier adventures, but it has the same kind of complex characters and humor.
This is a cool idea btw! I'm always looking for some book recs :3

TITLE: The Captive Prince trilogy AUTHOR: C.S. Pacat GENRES: YA fantasy NOTES: gay romance between the enslaved heir to a kingdom and his captor, the heir to another kingdom. tw: violence, forced sexual situations, heavy sexual scenes.
TITLE: And I Darken trilogy AUTHOR: Kiersten White GENRES: historical fiction NOTES: alternative history retelling of Vlad Dracul(a.k.a the real Dracula, a.k.a Vlad the Impaler)... but genderbent. with lots of gay romance. and tension. and strife. ugh. is categorized as YA but is really for more advanced readers.
TITLE: The Grisha trilogy AUTHOR: Leigh Bardugo GENRES: YA fantasy NOTES: good balance between romance, powers, and the protagonist finding herself. amazing characters. novella duology starting in 2019. complex characters.
TITLE: Six of Crows duology AUTHOR: Leigh Bardugo GENRES: YA fantasy NOTES: takes place in the same world as The Grisha Trilogy but on another continent. six criminals(who had to become criminals to survive) working together to pull off a massive heist to better the world. characters from The Grisha Trilogy make cameos. great romance lines. gays, bis, aces. it's lovely.
TITLE: Grave Mercy: His Fair Assassin AUTHOR: Robin La Fevers GENRES: YA fantasy/historical retelling(it's pretty fairly split) NOTES: takes place in 15th century Brittany, France. protagonist is a literal daughter of death(Saint Mortaine, in the book) and lives in a convent for death's daughters. protagonist is an assassin(a "helper" to Saint Mortaine). great slow burn romance. protag has to save Brittany. is a series but I've only read this book(the first).
TITLE: The Girl of Fire and Thorns series AUTHOR: Rae Carson GENRES: YA fantasy NOTES: protagonist is a princess and also someone who was prophecised to perform a great act in her life. has powers. has to save the world. multiple amazing romance plots. very sad at points. made me cry. great message about looks not being extremely important.
TITLE: The Song of Achilles AUTHOR: Madeline Miller GENRES: fantasy NOTES: retelling of the Iliad, specifically the romantic relationship between Patroclus and Achilles. high caliber of writing, absolutely beautiful. anyone can read it, you don't need to have read the Iliad and the Odyssey. gay as HECK. amazing. sad. bawled at the end. slow burn romance. tw: death, battle, war, gore.

title: The Goldfinch (Pulitzer Prize Winner) author: Donna Tartt genres: fiction notes: a moving Bildungsroman about the twisting tale of life that a young man follows after a Renaissance painting comes into his possession. a long read, but highly worth it. (content warnings: terror attack, death, drug use, unsavory language)
title: Never Let Me Go (Nobel Prize Winner) author: Kazuo Ishiguro genres: dystopian, science fiction notes: an absolutely phenomenal read, by all means. this follows the story of several children who are raised in an elite boarding school. they reenter each other's lives as adults. do not look up a plot summary of this novel before deciding to read it--it will ruin the story.
title: Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Pandemic author: David Quammen genres: nonfiction notes: an easy-to-digest, humorous at times, and thrilling account of the big, bad, and ugly infectious diseases in the human population. (content warnings: death, disease)
