Taking a few deep breaths, Pantherkit soon felt a little better. There was less pain which was nice; and she could drink some of the water around them, although it didn’t taste amazing. She closed her eyes and allowed herself to flop over on the ground for the moment. But not for too long, because then she felt that she would fall asleep. So eventually she got back up and dipped her head to Talltalon. “I think I’m ready to go now.” "Alright then." Talltalon nodded once, leading the way again. After a few moments, the damaged camp walls were visible through the marsh grasses and pine logs. He mewed firmly. "I want to get whatever that was just now checked out. Our medicine cat is skilled, I'm sure Snowdance can look you over... while I speak with Cedarstar, if I can find him." He sighed softly, inwardly wondering if the leader would flay his pelt for bringing this famished and injured she-cat back to camp. Even so, Talltalon was surprisingly convinced that she could have a potential here in Shadowclan. He supposed fatherhood had softened him, just a bit.

Ratmask took a deep breath. "There's always the option of tricking young cats from other Clans into giving us their prey. Perhaps we should find those kittypets Cedarstar got aid from the last time we were starving? Who where they? Gregforey and Slimmer? Might be able to use the worms that came from the wet ground to lure birds from SkyClan's and ThunderClan's territory."
Houndthroat nudged her in the direction of the apprentice. "I think I see one over there. Better hurry before someone else decides to clean their pelt in it."

"I think I see one over there. Better hurry before someone else decides to clean their pelt in it." "Gregory and Shimmer." Lynxdapple corrected with a thoughtful nod. Ever since the two cats had helped catch prey for them, he had recalled how much effort Coalhaze and Cedarstar, Cedarstorm at the time, had gone through to get it, even hiding it up until Coalhaze had been badly injured by those rouges at the Twolegplace border. The generosity of those two had fed many in the Clan. He nodded once. "The worms would be a good idea. Maybe we can keep a dirt pile full of worms specifically for bait for hunting." He mused thoughtfully. "Dibs!" Lilywhisper called quickly, rushing over to the puddle that Houndthroat had nudged her toward. With the mud and rainwater in her pelt, she looked like a little rat scurrying towards the water. She grimaced as she padded in it, the water chillingly cold. "Oof. This feels freezing."

Ratmask flicked his tail with a sense of uncaring. "Gregory and Shimmer. That's right." His brow scrunched at the worm idea. "A pile won't do any good if they slip back into the mud. Maybe we could find a rock they won't be able to wiggle off of?"
Houndthroat flattened his ears. As drenched as he was from the rain, he didn't like the idea of getting into a puddle like she was. "Well, wash off quick and get warmed up. We can't have you catching a cold."

"Once these dens are a bit more repaired, we can run the idea by Cardinalblaze. I'm sure he'll jump at the opportunity, he's got a clever mind himself." He nodded, confident that they could get a hunting patrol out quick. Lilywhisper lifted her hind leg to splash some water back at Houndthroat, though she quickly followed the tom's order as she took a breath and forced herself to roll in the cold water. She shook her fur with a small gasp, before she shuddered once. "Oh, yep. That's cold."

Pantherkit peered around at the camp. There were a few cats that she could see, and all appeared to be doing a task of some sort. The amount of different smells that invaded her nose almost made her stagger; she had never smelled herbs, water, marsh, prey, and more cats all in the same place. Eventually when she had gotten over the shock she turned to Talltalon and asked quietly, “Where is the medicine cat?”

Eventually when she had gotten over the shock she turned to Talltalon and asked quietly, “Where is the medicine cat?” Talltalon held his tail out to stop Pantherkit before she walked any farther into camp. He flicked his ears towards the damaged medicine den, where a few cats were working on repairing it. He glanced at Gentleshade and nodded lightly. "You can bring the materials over to the pile. I'll make sure Pantherkit gets looked at." "Talltalon!" Spiderfang padded swiftly towards the other tom, her eyes fiery and sharp as she looked at the she-cat with him and Gentleshade. It was clear that she was on guard duty, and that she hadn't been expecting a newcomer. Spiderfang looked at Pantherkit as she mewed firmly, her scarred muzzle twitching. "Gentleshade. Who is this?" "She got washed out in the flood. Winded up here. Before you call me every name under the sun, Spiderfang, I want to see if Cedarstar will allow her to become a Shadowclan apprentice." Talltalon mewed firmly, looking at his clanmate with an equal amount of gruffness. Spiderfang narrowed her eyes at Pantherkit, huffing sharply as though unsure if she was okay with Talltalon's insistance or not.

Pantherkit narrowed her eyes at 'Spierfang'. This cat had a haughty and rather pompous air about her in her opinion, and she didn't like it. She glared for a few moments before saying quietly, "My name is Pantherkit. I didn't ~ask~ to be washed up on your territory." The words came out her mouth without thought, and almost immediately after she spoke she felt warmth in her face. "I mean... uhm... I tried really hard not to trespass, but the water washed me here." she quickly backtracked.

Spiderfang snorted, lifting a brow at Pantherkit before she seemed to grow more serious. "You and I both know that Cedarstar is occupied right now, Talltalon. After what happened to Palepaw, I doubt he'll be very keen on having this on his paws as well." She mewed, honest and blunt as usual, before she glanced at Pantherkit again. "Can you hunt? Fight? If Talltalon's vouching for you, then I suppose you can't be helpless. He's the last cat to bring a cat into camp if he didn't think it was worth it." She decided, her tone more even now as she looked at Pantherkit up and down. She supposed she could be made into a good fighter, if she was willing to put in the work to train intensely. "I know, Spiderfang. I'm going to hopefully catch Cedarstar's ear when he leaves the den. But, I want to get her looked at by Snowdance." Talltalon explained, the two seeming to speak to eachother with their orange eyes in silent understanding.

Puffing up her chest, she said, "I can hunt, at least I think I can. I caught a lizard the other day. But I don't know about how well I can fight; usually when I did I got chided by my mom or clawed by my sister." Snowdance was a pretty name, and Pantherkit was certain that the cat behind the name must not be the meanest. But she was wondering about how they spoke of Palepaw and what had happened to them. These clan cats sure have a lot of bad things happening at once... or they seem to have dark pasts they don't want to talk about. She deflated however as she said her next words. "I... I don't know if I'll be good at fighting since I lost my eye. But I promise that if I join," she looked bravely into the she-cats orange-ish eyes, "I will not be useless or a burden."

Spiderfang listened to Pantherkit speak for a few moments, her eyes flashing with a hint of interest before she gave a small rumble. “Your eyes won’t have anything to do with how well you fight if you’re trained by us. Some of our greatest Warriors were blind. My daughter is blind, but she’s our leader’s apprentice, and can fight just fine.” She flicked her tail, her fiery snark seeming to diminish a bit as she relented. “I suppose I can’t act like it can’t be done. My first two apprentices were once loners…” “And they would have been exceptional Warriors. They were brave. Nobody ever forgets Burntpaw and Raccoonpaw.” Talltalon reminded with a rare show of gentleness, his respect for the powerful she-cat evident in how he spoke of her former apprentices. Spiderfang offered him a look of stoic gratitude, before she grunted. “With Cedarstar, rest assured if you’re made an apprentice, you’ll get trained. No excuses, and no slacking.” She reminded firmly. By now, Cardinalblaze was padding over to Talltalon and Spiderfang, the deputy blinking at Pantherkit with bewilderment, before he grew gently curious. Rather than move to speak to them, he silently glanced at the medicine den, and moved off to quickly try and fetch Cedarstar, hoping his former mentor would be able to address this.

Pantherkit watched the tom look at the three of them before shaking his head slightly and setting off in a different direction. Then she looked back up at Spiderfang. "I'd like to be a good fighter." These words of blind cats who weren't useless filled her with renewed confidence, and her one eye seemed to grow a little bit brighter with her ears perking up slightly. Both Talltalon and Spiderfang seemed to be having silent conversations, and it made Pantherkit slightly nervous. "What types of prey do you have on the marshes? Where I was I had some mice, a few birds, and of course lizards."

I'll see if we can Longpaw's and Lightpaw's help in collecting worms." Houndthroat scowled and stepped back when she tried to flick water at him, but seeing her soaked and shivering, he rolled his eyes and stepped up to her, pressing his pelt against her. "No use in you getting sick because of it. Let's get you to the warriors den. It should be warmer in there."

Cedarstar licked Starrylight's ear. It tore at his heart, but he couldn't be absent to the Clan in a time like this. "I'm going to step out to check on the Clan for a moment. Find me if he wakes up or if something..." He swallowed tightly, not bearing the thought of something wrong happening to Palepaw. "I'll be right back," he promised.
Stepping out of the medicine den was harder than he thought. Cedarstar took one long last look at his son before forcing his paws through the entrance of the den. His ears fell back at the state of the camp, but he felt pride in seeing how den repairs were already underway. On the far side of camp, black fur he didn't recognize caught his eye. It didn't surprise him to see Talltalon and Spiderfang around the little scrap. What did they find now? We don't need another mouth to feed. Cedarstar started toward them. He held his head up and his fur partly bristled. "Talltalon." Cedarstar glanced once at the little she-cat, too tired to care if his scarred appearance scared her. "What is this?"

Talltalon turned to face Cedarstar, dipping his head once before he mewed. “The flood washed her up on the territory. Claims her name is Pantherkit, but she’s from none of the other Clans. I imagine her mother or father knew of us, but she claims that her mother was killed by rouges elsewhere beyond our territories. She looked half-starved, and a bit too young to be out alone. I know that I’m the last cat to make this claim, but…” He seemed a bit misted by both memories and a sense of duty. “I believe she may be able to be beneficial to Shadowclan, and she certainly seems willing to dedicate herself.” He glanced at Pantherkit.
“This is Cedarstar. Our leader.” Spiderfang introduced firmly, so Pantherkit knew who she was looking at.
Lynxdapple opened his jaws to respond to Ratmask, only to pause as he spotted Cedarstar padding out towards an unfamiliar cat with Talltalon and Spiderfang. The small tom bristled, but remained at a curious distance.
Cardinalblaze padded closer to Cedarstar and the young newcomer, the deputy silent for now as he surveyed the situation. He bit his lip, knowing he needed to tell Cedarstar that they needed to send a search out for Stormfury… or, heartbreakingly, to look for his body. It had been impossible to speak to the leader yet, and even now this stranger had to take precedent.

Lilywhisper felt a hint of warmth as Houndthroat pressed close to her. She hid her fluster with a stubborn huff. “W-well. There’s still plenty to do in camp, I can’t just go take a break in the den…” She mewed, though her argument was weak. She just enjoyed being so close to him, that he was the one pressing up to her.

Cedarstar flicked his tail. "Pantherkit, huh?" He eyed the wet scrap of fur. He supposed one of the loners or rogues they knew could've spread knowledge of the Clans, though he didn't see why any of them would name their kits after the Clans. "That's a bold claim to make, Talltalon. Take a look around. We can hardly feed ourselves. We can't afford another stomach to fill. Not after everything that's happening." He looked back at Pantherkit. "You look half-starved, but every piece of prey is precious to ShadowClan. Why should we risk some on you?"
Ratmask narrowed his eyes at the newcomer. "Little scrap of fur, isn't she?" He muttered to Lynxdapple.
Houndthroat rolled his eyes and nudged her towards the warriors den. "And I can't risk getting chewed out by Snowdance for telling you to take a bath that leads you to getting sick. You don't have to sleep in the warriors den. Just be there long enough to warm up then you can help out the Clan more."

Talltalon looked at Cedarstar with understanding, knowing that the tom’s words were a valid concern. He had told Pantherkit the exact same thing. He looked at the she-cat, wanting to see if she could argue her case without him. After all, Talltalon wouldn’t argue Cedarstar’s decision. Spiderfang was just as intent, sitting in silence to await Cedarstar’s final decision.
“She looks half-starved, but older than a kit.” Lynxdapple mused, looking intently at the black she-cat. “It’s most odd that Talltalon seemed to bring her in. He’s the last cat to do something like that… hm…” He looked thoughtful.
Lilywhisper rolled her eyes, but found herself relenting as she was ushered towards the Warrior’s den. She glanced around at the partial damage, some being repaired by their Clanmates as she mused lightly. “You think it’ll look better than before the flood?”

Pantherkit felt her mouth go dry. Cedarstar seemed tired, and even worse in a state of grief. While she didn't know what it was about, his body language and tired eyes didn't fill her with renewed confidence. But then she held her head high as she spoke and looked him right in his scarred and tired face.
"I would not like to be a waste of prey. If I were to join you, I would try my hardest to become what you seem to call a 'warrior'. I know how to hunt and I'm guessing in time I could probably learn to fight. All I'm asking from you is a chance." Then in a slightly quieter voice she added, "I want to join this clan. While my life before this wasn't bad really, a chance to serve and protect something would be better than wandering from border to border."

Cedarstar knitted his brow. At least the kit had the ability to find her voice when questioned. He still wasn't convinced, though. If she was just looking for a place to belong, why pick ShadowClan? He supposed her dark fur would fit well with the territory, but surely if she knew about the Clans she would know the others were better off then them? "Talltalon." Cedarstar couldn't ignore his urge to help the young cat, but he wasn't about to hand out a free meal. "Take her hunting. Show her how to properly catch something. Depending on how she does will decide if she deserves to become a 'paw or not."
Ratmask twitched his whiskers in amusement. "I suppose Talltalon becoming a father has made him soft."
Houndthroat followed her gaze to the damaged camp. "Probably, if we work hard enough. Need all this water to go away, though." he scowled when he stepped in a muddy puddle.

Talltalon lifted his head at Cedarstar’s order, his eyes flashing with understanding before he looked at Pantherkit and nodded once, his voice graveled like stone. “I’ll thoroughly test her resolve, Cedarstar.” He then addressed Pantherkit. “The prey we hunt is unique compared to other Clans. If you believe you are suited for Shadowclan, then we’ll make sure you can catch it.” He decided, lifting to his paws.
Spiderfang lashed her tail lightly, content with Cedarstar’s test rather than just letting the she-cat in without trial. She rumbled. “I’m returning to guard duty. Let me know if I’m needed.”
Cardinalblaze blinked with interest at Cedarstar’s decision, though he knew his former mentor well enough to know why he was doing this. The deputy’s anxiety rose a bit as he forced it down, reminding himself that he had an obligation to Cherryvine to at least try to get Stormfury home.
Lynxdapple snorted once, humored. “As it tends to do with most fathers. Though, having mine made me less immature, I think, rather than any softer than I already was.” He snickered, before he looked at Ratmask. “I wonder how much softer yours have made you.”
Lilywhisper moved to groom her pelt the wrong direction to warm herself up. She glanced at Houndthroat, humoring. “If only we could dig a big channel to flow the water out. That would take forever though.”

Cedarstar nodded to Talltalon and Spiderfang then turned to let them go. However, when he saw Cardinalblaze's solemn expression, Cedarstar flicked his ear twice. "What's wrong?"
Ratmask snorted and looked away from Lynxdapple. "Hardly any, I suppose." He stood up and lightly frowned seeing Cedarstar addressing Cardinalblaze. "Get ready, we might be asked to join a patrol."
Houndthroat laid next to her to help her get warm. He shrugged. "Well, the dirt place is the lowest place in camp. I hate having to go when it's flooded. Too bad the puddles don't all run into there instead into the dens."

Talltalon glanced at Pantherkit. “We’ll just head right back out, before too many cats try and crowd. I’d rather bring you back holding prey than to come in making an empty-pawed impression, got it?” He mewed firmly, inwardly determined to make this investment worth it. For a second, he saw Willowkit and Ravenpaw in Pantherkit, and his chest ached even more. This time, he could see it through. He could!
Cardinalblaze looked at Cedarstar, taking in a breath as he reported. “Stormfury was lost in the flood. Raccoonmask witnessed the water take him when he sacrificed himself to save her life. While it was the only loss we had the entire time we moved to the border for safety, it… it’s one that I can’t ignore. Not for Cherryvine, or their kits’ sake. I want to search for him, at least the chance to find him and bring him back, alive or for burial.” He murmured, before he swallowed, guilt in his eyes.
“I’m sorry, that you had to come back to this after what must have been a dreadful patrol. Cedarstar, I didn’t see Moonpetal return with your patrol. Tell me, was she…” He trailed off, eyes wide with grief as he already felt that he knew the answer.
“Mhm.” Lynxdapple hummed with a lift of his brow to Ratmask, before his muzzle creased with concern at the look on the deputy’s face. He blinked once, murmuring. “Something’s wrong…”
For a moment, Lilywhisper looked silently towards the dirtplace tunnel, watching the puddles grow more prominent towards the lower elevation. She narrowed her eyes in thought, before she gave a quiet mew. “Well. I mean… maybe we could do that. Could we? What if we made a way for the water to go around the camp, somehow? At least, in smaller storms, with less flooding?”

Cedarstar gasped. "Stormfury's..." He clamped his jaw shut. He couldn't look distraught to the Clan, but Stormfury's death wasn't what he was expecting Cardinalblaze to report. After everything he did... Cedarstar tried swallowing down his grief. As hard as Cedarstar had been to the rabbit-chaser when he first arrived, it was Stormfury that had his back when Ashrock betrayed him. Stormfury supported his deputyship and after he became leader. Stormfury who Cedarstar trusted to train Whorlpaw.
Cedarstar let out a breath. The prey maulers, the moonstone, Moonpetal, Palepaw, his cursed dreams and now Stormfury? He felt like he couldn't catch his breath. Flicking his ear twice, Cedarstar managed to raise his head. His fur fell eeirely flat. "Moonpetal is..." he sighed. "I should make an announcement."
Ratmask twitched his tail several times with growing impatience. "I wish they wouldn't keep us in suspense. Is this how Cedarstar leads the clan? Bad things happen and he doesn't address them?"
Houndthroat flicked his tail and laid his head down. He wouldn't look at her. "Sounds like to much of a hairbrained idea for anyone to believe coming from us."

Cardinalblaze’s heart fell as Cedarstar’s response made it clear that Moonpetal had not made it. He looked at Cedarstar with heavy eyes, nodding once. “It would be best if you did. Most of the Clan doesn’t know yet about Moonpetal. If there’s any possible chance for Stormfury, I won’t rest until we’ve at least tried to see him back home.” He promised, before stepping back. He glanced at the Clan rock, wondering if he should stand at the base, like Cloudscar used to.
Lynxdapple shook his head. “It’s a bit frustrating. I’m guessing that Cedarstar’s first priority was making sure Palepaw was stable. Looking now, I think he’s about to announce.” He noticed Cardinalblaze’s step back towards the center of camp.
“Well, maybe we can get someone the Clan will listen to on board.” Lilywhisper offered, glancing at Houndthroat. “Floods are always gonna happen. But we can be better prepared.”

He blinked once, murmuring. “Something’s wrong…” For a moment, Lilywhisper looked silently towards the dirtplace tunnel, watching the puddles grow more prominent towards the lower elevation. She narrowed her eyes in thought, before she gave a quiet mew. “Well. I mean… maybe we could do that. Could we? What if we made a way for the water to go around the camp, somehow? At least, in smaller storms, with less flooding?” She nodded but she still felt a little bit nervous. From the way everyone was talking, it seemed as though they were going to have her catch a snake or something! Her ear twitched out of nerves and she gave herself a quick lick on the chest before getting up and following Talltalon out of the camp. I hope I’ll be coming back…

I hope I’ll be coming back… "You asked earlier what kind of prey we hunt." Talltalon started as he led Pantherkit out towards the marshes once more. With all the flooding, he knew the easiest prey she could catch to possibly impress the Clan. He lectured as they moved. "Frogs, lizards, rats, those are our main prey. But, we catch the rare mouse that slips over the Thunderclan border, or a stray bird that strays too close to Goldberry's traps." He flicked his ear. "That's one of our Clanmates. You'll learn all their names, if you are able to stay. For now, the flooding might have offered a good way for us to find some frogs. They'll like the extra puddles." He decided.

Pantherkit nodded and pricked her ears for the sounds of frogs. When she heard one, she tipped her head in the direction of the noise and asked quietly, “Can I go hunt it?”
