Lukewarm pasta was pretty much all there ever was for lunch at my elementary/middle school. No additions. Just vaguely warmed, slippery noodles. It got so bad that some kids staged a hunger strike because they wanted some different food, any kind of food, and even then the staff didn't care. I was one of those people; went without lunch [or breakfast, but that's another story] for years of my life. Then my parents started making me bring lunch because I was looking a little malnourished.

Step it out, Mary, my fine daughter Step it out, mary, if you can Step it out, Mary, my fine daughter Show your legs to the countryman (x2)
In the village of Kilgory, there's a maiden young and fair Her eyes shine like diamonds, she has long and golden hair The horseman he comes riding, riding up to her father's gates On a pure-white stallion, he comes at the strike of eight.
Chorus: Step it out, Mary, my fine daughter Step it out, mary, if you can Step it out, Mary, my fine daughter Show your legs to the countryman (x2)

[Good luck with your driver's test! And yeah, that's a viable option. Or if they ever make any close friends, they could ask one of them to surrogate somewhere down the line or something.]
The dark ginger tabby chuckled lowly in return. "That it is, love. That it is. And, we potentially could have, but would it have been worth being chewed out by the leader or deputy? I suppose that depends on your opinion of authority, but still. Spending your entire evening getting shamed because you wanted a few hours of rest just doesn't seem worth it to me." Really, this conversation was beginning to make him think of his brother. Cedarnose had gotten on his nerves many a time before, but Rowanheart still cared for him in some manner. The tortoiseshell was family, after all.

Ugh, I hate cookie-cutter stories and characters so much. And yeah, that kind of thing is especially common in YA dystopian novels for some reason. And I'll have to admit that I still give them chances as well, but oftentimes I just end up disappointed. So many things could have been great, and then they just...weren't. :/
True, but I also feel like many people just slap the fantasy label on their work so they can get away with shoddy writing. Like, it says fantasy on the tin, but the worldbuilding and characters are way too similar to all the things that we have here, and it's weird and definitely makes me somewhat uncomfortable at times. And yes, research is important and I wish more people understood that.

It had been an alright day. Quiet, strangely; he oddly hadn't ran into any patrols today. Perhaps he was just staying off their main traveling paths? Snowstar wasn't sure, and frankly he didn't care enough to really investigate. He could have sworn he'd spotted the familiar tortoiseshell form of his uncle at one point, streaking through the trees smelling of blood (his own, naturally), other fluid, and rot. At least he had a sensitive nose. And, speaking of that sensitive nose...The scent of another cat hit him abruptly, and he turned ever so slightly to meet the oncoming force, ears pricked.

I love how when it comes to the majority of my own characters' sexualities and stuff, I just suddenly become the embodiment of the shrug emoji. Probably because I'm so used to a lot of them being cannon fodder with little real development that I don't think about that thing.
