The Wilderness is a frightful place. . . .
The world is full of dangers for a once-mollycoddled pet. There may be cruel beasts and a struggle to survive, but these hardships are nothing compared to what Humanity has become: little more than a memory, with few remaining. Those that do, however, are horrendous creature, only barely resembling what their race had once been. Heartless and sadistic, they turn on the species that was once known as man's best friend...
Imagine being a pampered pet dog, content in every sense of the word. After all, you have People to chaperone and food to eat—what more could you possible need? You can roll around in the grass and flaunt your collar as well—the emblem of the domesticated dog, a gift so softheartedly given to you by your loving People, which you swore to protect the best you could. But one day when you return indoors after wriggling happily in the backyard, something seems different. Your People are unwell—not only are they greenish, smelly and pale, but they don't cry out in welcome as you approach, nor do they stroke you happily. You know they wouldn't neglect you like that—something is wrong! Confused, you inhale their strange scent with the utmost concentration, and once again that terrible scent collides with your nose, stinging your senses—
Then you suddenly realize what has happened, and you don't know what to do . . . .
Welcome to The Wilderness!
Welcome to The Wilderness, an anthropomorphic dog RP! Here you will navigate a strange, broken world through the eyes of an ownerless dog. The characters seen in The Wilderness express themselves through facial expressions and words, similar to the way in which humans communicate, but they also communicate by means of the nonverbal language seen in their species, the domestic dog, Canis lupus familiaris. They also possess the common characteristics seen in all dogs: four legs, a tail, and an extraordinary sense of smell and hearing. For more information, scroll downward!
It’s the Mid 21st century, and a huge epidemic has destroyed most of the human population. Therefore, human intervention has decreased, and some of Earth’s endangered species have been able to return from near extinction. Other animals, must teach themselves to survive in the wild. Such is how domestic dogs have learned to live in packs, and survive to pass their bloodlines on through generations. Now that humans are dead, the dogs must learn to band together to survive in the wild.
The roleplay takes place in an abandoned town, surrounded by sparse forest, that becomes overrun with dogs, wildlife, and vegetation. It will follow a loosely dependent band of dogs, and they're advancement into a pack.
The city has several different buildings that the dogs inhabit. Their temporary food source resides in the form of the old meat house and butchery. Grocery stores also prove fruitful for food, but less nutritious, and too large a territory to control for a single dog. However, the dogs must quickly learn to hunt before their meat spoils.
One of the larger buildings, a ruined office building serves as cubicles for dens, with the dogs in power sleeping on top of the tall cubicles in the manager's office.
The abandoned underground dogfight tunnels prove a useful place to have power challenges, or carry out executions and other punishments.

Accuracy;; This includes realism, and accuracy to the theme of the roleplay. This means that you cannot have a half-cat, half-dog creature, as they are not of the same family classification. Please try to have domestic dog blood in your lineage. It's a city, there are no wolves here. Besides, wolf/half-wolf OCs are often overpowered, and overrun the packs, with lack of originality. Try to use different types of breeds, spread out the pack diversity.
Activity;; A lot of work and time and creativity has been put into the thread. Please be active, as well for courtesy for other members of the thread. It’s no fun to have a character frozen for days upon days. If you are inactive for 3 days, you will be warned. 2 days after your first warning, you will be given a second warning. Warnings will be distributed by PM. If you use mobile or for some reason, cannot access PM, please let us know, and we will post to threads that you actively participate. After your second warning, you will have one day to return. If not, you will be deleted from the roleplay. Activity is what makes or breaks an RP.

We understand that some people do not have English as a first language, but your writing must be comprehendible. ‘Txt tlk will not b accepted when u r RPing lol.’ Self explanatory. It is lazy, and can be illegible. Please refrain from using asteriks (*). Preferred content would be 3rd Person Narrative. PG 13 only romance. At least a paragraph of 6 sentences is expected.
Joining;; When joining, there will be a 3 character limit. Once you become more active, you will be allowed more characters. However, only make as many characters as you can handle. Characters that are not active will clog the allegiances. You may only have a certain amount of higher ranking dogs. Please tell us what ranks you are planning on making before you make them, so you do not have to scrap characters that are not accepted. To be accepted, please include the clawmark on the shoulder in the description if they are any rank but a recruit. If you are making a recruit, include the word ‘Purple’ in your other section. Do not make perfect characters. Try to include flaws. When new people join, please strive to include them into the conversation and RPing! It is important that everyone feels included on this thread.

RANKINGS;;
Characters are ranked in order of ranking. Even within sub-ranks, such as hunters, the higher up the list you are, the higher in rank you are.
If a character gains a higher power of position, you must wait one week (real time) before challenging them.
Please ask before challenging a character. They have the right to decline, as some of them have come early to claim these ranks. Sadly, Alpha and Beta are unchallengeable if Mongrel or I are filling that space. We need to have some kind of control on the RP. We apologize for the inconvenience, therefore making several other respectable ranks. Mates will be chosen within the RP.
The higher the rank, the higher the chance of winning will be. (Winner will be chosen by dice roll, unless you are willing to lose.) The following advantages are as follows:

 Punishments:
Execution:
Execution is basically a formal way of dying, as opposed to the 'regular' death penalty. The Alphas are always the overseer of executions, and will traditionally be carried out by the Alphas. Besides that fact, ways of execution differ greatly, from a slash or bite to the neck to more . . . . creative methods.
Exile:
The exile penalty is rarely put into effect, in that it is more effective to kill a wrongdoer instead. When it does occur, however, it is simple and efficient.
Death:
This penalty is exactly what it sounds like: slow, agonizing, gruesome death, quick and simple. Like the formal execution penalty, the immediate death penalty can be put into effect in various ways. This penalty is reserved for the worst of criminals--criminals so vile they do not deserve proper executions.
Mutilation:
This penalty is pretty much what it sounds like: the criminal is maimed. This can be anything from a throat bite, to a limb injury. If he or she doesn't immediately die, the criminal is either exiled or demoted to a very lowly status.
Minor to Major Wounds:
These will be inflicted by the Beta. Anything from a bite to a scratch that is not fatal falls under this category.
Other Penalties:
Since the Alpha's word is law, if he or she sentences a wrongdoer to a punishment that is not listed here, the rest of the pack must go along with it. These penalties could be anything, from imprisonment to self-inflicted death.
Lad’s Word
Hey, morons. It’s Lad, leader of this motley gang of mavericks. I have several things to say, all of which are important, so if you want to survive around here, pay close attention.
Firstly, I must warn you that people are to be avoided. I will not tolerate anyone interacting with a Human, regardless of how friendly they seem. If you stray too close to a Human by accident, or are ignorant enough to deliberately interact with them, they might seem docile and friendly at first, but it is likely they will eventually kill you for some selfish gain—a bet, for example, the dolts—or, if not, food or clothing. If you emerge from contact with a Human alive, I will see to it that the intended killing is righted by means of my own wrath.
As you probably gathered, People nowadays—Beasts, as we call them—are filthy, diseased creatures, crazed, abysmal miscreants, nothing like the civilized Safeguarded we once knew. I will not tolerate any affection or empathy toward these Beasts, nor will I allow anyone to mention them—or the old kind of People, either, for that matter—unless discussing official matters. It is also simply foolish, downright idiotic, to pine for the wholesome, Safeguarded-oriented lifestyle we’re all familiar with—the Safeguarded are dead, and that’s all there is to it.
If a Human is near you and you’re alone, disregard your pride and run away from them—do not lead them into the territory, obviously; take a complex path, one that leads away from the territory, so as to confuse them. If a Human wanders too close to the perimeters, or even goes so far as to cross them, and you have knowledge of it, notify me immediately; I want the Assassins to eliminate them and the Decontaminators to dispose of the carcass that remains. This rule is to be followed; if you don’t notify me of nearby Beasts, you risk endangering the entire pack—and, in addition, you also risk excruciating pain—pain inflicted by none other than Lad, your "honorable" leader.
Speaking of pain, I must warn you that deserters are not only disfavored—they are despised, loathed, abhorred. Desertion, an immoral, ignoble, repulsive deed, will not be tolerated. Deserters will be killed as soon as they are found—or, if the loyal of us are lucky, sighted—thus, I admonish you to remain loyal to this pack, and this pack alone—or else. You may socialize with Nomads such as Traders—they hardly know how to keep a friendship anyway—but you may not become too attached to them, because that will distract you from the pack, an error that will surefire result in punishment.
Another warning: I am to be obeyed unquestioningly, as is Brimstone. We’re the ones in charge, not you motley lapdogs. If you feel that you need gimcrack laws rather than the mere word of your leaders, that’s tough. If you think you’re up for the position of leader, you may go ahead and challenge me, but I promise you you’ll regret it; the same thing goes for Brimstone: I’m almost certain you’ll have the decency to feel regret for your insubordination when you’re lying on the ground covered in your own blood and tears.
I also must remind you that this pack is all about respect: show some—and exert dominance on your inferiors when necessary. The hierarchy is one of the many things that binds us together, so reinforce it—it’s for the greater good. If I see anyone sympathizing with their inferiors, I will give them a good bite on the foot so that they are reminded not to empathize with each painful step. Once all of you get the hang of the callousness needed for survival, I hope you will enjoy flaunting your status just as I so obviously do.
Speaking of callousness, I must remind you all that only the worthiest may survive in this pack. We may be caring and upright, to an extent (and a very small one, at that), but we are also ruthless and unforgiving. Everyone except those incapable of hunting—Matriarchs, Pups, Elders, the like—must feed themselves by means of individualistic hunting, hunting that only involves oneself and only benefits one’s own wellbeing—hunting that is not related to the pack. This is my special little way of ensuring that everyone in this pack is fit to survive, and a foolproof way at that.
On another note, pups are to be treated with the utmost compassion; the same goes for their dams. This measure is to be taken in order to ensure safe whelping and nursing. If we do not strive to create the optimum environment for expectant and nursing females and their pups, we will have no generations to success us—and, essentially, no successors means no pack. Surprised to see me so caring? I sure as sseus am too.

Traditional Activities:
GLADIATOR FIGHTING
In Gladiator Fighting, or Fighting for short, one dog will challenge the other to a Fight or another dog will pit them against one another. This fight must be fought in a moderately civil fashion, at a minimum, and both dogs must consent before the fight begins.
Killing is not permitted. The dismembering of eyes is not permitted. The dismembering of tails is not permitted--tails are vital for the conveying of nonverbal messages, a significant part of the body language that comes naturally to us. The dismembering of entire ears is prohibited (you may tear off small portions of the ear, however.) You may not tear off entire limbs, although it is legal to tear off small body parts such as footpads and claws. Otherwise, you may injure your opponent in any way you please.
The fight will take place in the Arena, a large, roped-off area. You will be led to this area by the Beta. You are not permitted to speak to the Beta as he or she leads you to the Arena, nor will you be allowed to speak with your opponent as you combat. The Alpha will referee the Fight and name the victor. The winner of the Fight will be rewarded with an abundance of gifts, and he or she will also be able to eat directly after the Alpha and Beta for six days. On the first day, there will be a feast held in his or her honor.
RACING
Racing is when two dogs run at high speeds toward a particular finishing point. The purpose of Racing is to determine which dog is faster. You may not trip or manipulate your opponent in any fashion during the span of the race. You also must both stay far apart from one another and remain refined to a particular side of the Racing Grounds for the entirety of the Race. A chosen referee will be there to name the victor; he or she will also call the racers to a halt if either breaks a rule. The victor of the race will receive an abundance of gifts in return for his or her victory, and a communal race will be held in his or her honor on the first day. He or she will also be able to eat directly after the Alpha and Beta for six days.
SWIMMING
Swimming is when two dogs try to outswim each other. The winner of the Swim is the dog who reaches the finishing point first. As is with any competitive match, a chosen referee will examine the competitors closely as they compete. The winner will be rewarded with an abundance of gifts--and praise--for his or her feat. He or she will also eat directly after the Alpha and Beta for six days. On the first day, a communal Swim will be held in his or her honor. The dogs will frolic in the lake, then come out to share the prey.
GAMBLING/BETTING
Gambling is when two or more dogs bet a quantity of riches or other valuable objects on the winner of a competition. If both consent to the item(s) in the bet, then the bet will commence. The winner of the bet will receive whichever items were bet, while the loser will simply go about his or her day with less valuables than he or she had before.

Rankings (From Highest to Lowest)
TIER 1: The Powerful
THE SUPERIOR: Alpha [0/2]
The Alpha is one of the more well known ranks, and is the main leader of the pack. The Alphas are one male and female, typically mates, and their commands are to be followed. Alphas can be challenged for their position through duels, or deathmatches.
THE FORMIDABLE: BETA [0/2]
The Beta are typically mates, like the Alphas and are second in command. They help to advise the Alpha in times of difficulty, and take charge when both they Alphas are away. Betas can be challenged for their position by duels, or deathmatches. If the Beta loses, but is not killed, the Beta must step down from their position, but can remain their mate remains.
TIER 2: The Aristocracy
THE VETERANS: Elders [0/5]
Veterans are typically dogs that have served dutifully in their youths, and therefore have been honored and will be taken care of until their end days.
THE QUEENS OF CAMP: Matriarchs [0/3] and Pups [0/9]
For the time being that females are expecting, birthing, or nursing pups, they are called Matriarchs. They are treated with extra care and comfort to ensure healthy pups and a safe birthing. Pups are kept healthy, and treated kindly. All dogs are advised to treat the Matriarchs and Pups with care and gentleness--if they don't, they'll have the law to answer to. Pups are weaned at 4 weeks, and they are ready to take on Apprenticeship at 8 moons of age.
TIER 3: The Strong
THE APEX PREDATOR: Hunt Captain [0/1]
The Hunt Captain is the commander of the Hunters. One of his most important duties is to assign Hunters particular positions within the Phalanx. He also decides where the Hunting Phalanx will voyage and chooses which prey they will pursue. He is the immediate inferior of the Alpha and Beta if they choose to accompany the Hunters on a voyage. If this does occur, the Alpha may temporarily assume the Hunt Captain’s duties for the span of the hunt, in that it is his right as leader, but it is not compulsory that he do this. The Hunt Captain is appointed by skill and seniority.
THE MEDICS: Healers [0/2]
The medics are the unsung nurses and doctors of the sick and wounded. They tend to mother dogs during births, and take care of the elders. The Healers each can treat minor conditions, but one majors in illnesses, and the other majors in wound tendings. The Medics can also serve dually as prophets and spiritual healers, although a prophet is considered a rare occurrence and is thus treated with the utmost respect.
THE WATCHMEN: Watch Captain [0/1]
The Watch Captain is the commander of the Sentinels. This dog is appointed.
THE TERRITORIAL: Patrol Captain [0/1]
The Patrol Captain is the commander of the Patrollers. He roams the boundaries with the Patrollers, but serves them not as an equal, but as a superior. This dog is appointed.
TIER 4: Average
THE PREDATORY: Hunters
The Hunters are the pack's loving providers. Their compassion is limitless, and they are always willing to take risks in order to nourish the pack. The Hunters have enormous prey drives, which, unfortunately, can cause many to generalize them as murderers. They typically start as Patrollers, and fight their way up. If they lose a challenge from a lower rank, they must take the rank of the victor.
THE WATCHMEN: Sentinels
The Sentinel leads a more lonely life, seeing that they sleep during the day, and keep watch over the night. They assure safety of the camp during the night. Sleeping through the night is strictly prohibited and is punished per pack law. These dogs are appointed.
THE SCOUTS: Patrollers
The Patrollers keep the territory safe from any outside threats, and take care of threats inside of the territory, such as outsiders or dangerous animals. To move up in rank, they must fight a Hunter. If they win, they will take the place of the Hunter, and the Hunter will be demoted to their former spot.
THE UNLEARNED: Apprentices [0/5] and Healing Apprentices [0/2]
The Apprentices are trained by multiple mentors of various ranks in an effort to give them a large array of skills. They graduate when the Alpha sees fit, then they become a Patroller. From there, they must fight their way through the ranks.
Healing Apprentices are trained by all of the Healers in a combined effort to teach them how to treat minor conditions, but one learns one major from the specialist, while the other learns the latter.
TIER 5: The Accepted
THE ACCEPTED: Initiates [0/7]
Initiates are Recruits who have been deemed useful by the Alpha. Initiates must undergo a number of cruel trials created by the Leader(s) in order to become official members. When Initiates become official members, they become Patrollers.
Tier 6: The Untrustworthy
THE UNFAMILIARS: Recruits [0/7]
These dogs are not born into the pack, and tend to be Outsiders. They will remain Recruits until it has been determined whether they are worthy of pack membership. If the Leader(s) believes them worthy, they will be ranked Initiates. From there, it is a long and catastrophic road.
THE DOORMAT: Dredge [0/1]
The Dredge is a punching bag and a scullion. He or she may have committed a crime, have a crippling injury, or come from a shameful lineage. In some cases, the Dredge might simply be 'weird' or hermitlike to the other dogs, and thus is made a Dredge. They are the bottom of the bottom, and are inferior to every rank. They are subject to the rage of their superiors, and must obey every command that is given to them or face certain punishment.

His eyes are like pools of black liquid, tinged with brown near the outermost edges, and his ears are your average “rose ears”, in that they fold midway; they are soft and velvety in texture. Other:
I, then dubbed Pup #5, was brought up in a kennel. My litter's bloodline was noted to be one of the most prestigious, with prized show dogs, stud dogs, and competitors constituting most of our ancestry. It was because of this that passersby often paused to admire us, a mother with her litter of 6. I found the entire thing quite doltish, but made no move to protest as they crooned at me from the other side of the bars; they weren’t worth my effort.
We were weaned from our dam’s milk at the age of 7 weeks. I, being one of the smallest, was thought to be unhealthy by the breeders; they considered detaching me from my mother at a later date, but decided against it, for my dam was growing ever-impatient as the days passed, as though longing to rid herself of the squirmy, furry burdens that were her offspring. The dam, my siblings and I were released into a soft enclosure shortly thereafter. We frolicked within the boundaries for a while, and were later returned to our kennel. The next day, this ritual was mimicked, only with the sire instead of the dam; little did the breeders know that freeing the sire was a mistake, and a fatal one, at that.
The sire was a crazed dog, a mad dog, though the People did not know this, for the sire was docile toward them. Such crazed a dog was he that when my dam flirted with him through the bars, I feared for her life. He was as good to them as all of his lineage, which is my lineage as well, though I am ashamed to say it; but he was a cunning, stealthy, deranged creature toward his fellow dogs. I could not believe that my dam had even obliged to mate with him.
Anyhow, I had been familiarized with my father’s absurd mutterings at a young age, for he had always lived in the neighboring bungalow. I had grown used to the muttered musings of the strange dog, for my father was always mumbling, no matter the time of day; he sometimes even muttered in slumber. And yet, seeing the sire out and about gave me dizzying unease. This dog was snakelike by nature, that I knew, and he certainly seemed to live up to that nature as he poised to strike in the outermost part of the receptacle. But this predatory behavior didn’t seem to rouse any unease in the breeders, who continued to caw animatedly to one another a short length away, oblivious to my father’s insanity.
I forgot my misgivings as I gamboled with my siblings, my father still crouching in the corner. It was a pleasurable thing to be a lively youth, liberated from worry and suspicion by play. But the sire had chosen his victim; me, the smallest of the litter, probably thought to be “impure of blood”, given my puny stature. He’d be “doing me a favor” if he killed me, was what he probably thought, given his viciousness. So he waited for me, the worthless, miniscule runt of the lot, to stray too near. . . . Then he attacked.
Hunching forward in a pounce, he snagged me, his son, on a claw and proceeded to flip me onto my back, clawing, snarling, and snapping as fiercely as though it were prey he was ambushing, not his heir, not his descendant. I clawed weakly at him, but could not escape what I believed to be my downfall. The breeders, my siblings, and my dam stood by, too dumbstruck to aid me but scared, confused and subdued all the same. I could already feel the blackness closing in on me, for indeed, I was verging death—
Sturdy hands grabbed my sire, pulling the crazed cur away; one of the breeders had apparently come to his senses. The remaining People and my dam stood by, openmouthed, and my siblings cowered behind them, but only minutes later did they make to help me, lying there like a lazily discarded piece of rubbish, sides heaving, sobbing piteously. They took the sire, some tearful, others revolted-looking. They did not need a Temperament Test to decide whether the sire and I were unstable; the sire had (unexpectedly) proven himself insane by starting the fight to begin with, and I, naught but a pup, had branded myself aggressive in refusing to yield. The sire would be euthanized, but the People believed that disposal would suffice for me. Didn’t they know how much agony they were causing me, a bloodied, mangled pup? I suppose they didn’t, because that was the way their minds worked. They just didn’t have the capacity for such humility.
They seemed uncertain and scared as they scooped me up, as though unsure whether it was fair to punish me so cruelly, but I did not care. All I desired was to be freed of my pain, a need they would not deliver, however much I whined and begged.
They plopped me down beside a Dumpster, then drove away in their automobile. Fur clumped with blood, flies covering my wounds, every rattling breath caused me more pain than the last, and the furls of smoke that whipped my face as they retreated did not improve my pitiful state. I could feel myself slipping into the abyss, but welcomed this new development, however fearsome.
I heard a sudden rustling, then a heavy footfall. Cupped hands scooped me up; I could feel myself ascending.
“Hey there, little fella . . . .”
Loving, compassionate hands cradled me, and I relaxed. Rosemary. I could sense her name, sense her intentions. And, although I had lost most of my drive to live in the brutal skirmish I had had with my father, I knew I would hold on for this Human, and this Human alone.
“I’m sorry I have to do this to you, Little Fella,” said Rosemary quietly. “But I can’t afford to care for you anymore, can’t afford the vet bills . . . . I’m sorry. I tried my best.” She passed me to another set of arms, paler and hairier. I sniffed at the boxy face above.
“How’d you find him?” asked Jeremy, reserved yet understanding.
“I was Dumpster diving,” she said, sounding close to tears. “Some jerks had left him to rot with the garbage, why I don’t know. . . . He’s such a good, smart dog . . . .”
“This is Jeremy. . . .” she told me (even though I already knew that). “. . . . He’ll take care of you,” she finished after what I sensed was an internal struggle, albeit blankly. Then I was moving, moving away from Rosemary, my only true Safeguarded, the only Human deserving of my protection. . . .
I didn’t understand. Scared and confused, I bawled for her, screamed for her, but she had already turned away, tearful visage buried in her cupped hands.
Jeremy tied my lead to the metal pillar. “I’ll be back,” he said promisingly, then vanished into the building, which was somehow constituted entirely of glass panes.
As if I’ll be waiting for you, I thought angrily, remembering Rosemary. But even then I had to admit that he was a goodhearted, noble Human—nobler than the Human who was about to reveal her ugly face to me for the first time.
A scent snagged in my nostrils, a familiar one. I recognized the scent of the Human who had been following us for days. It was just my luck that she had to show up then, when I was hopelessly vulnerable. A few passersby turned their heads questioningly as Arabella tugged the lead from the pillar, wrinkly body tensed with concentration, but none intervened, and the thief prevailed.
“Git on, dog!” she spat menacingly, chuffing unpleasantly, then dragged me away from Jeremy, my last hope . . . .
“Fifty dollars!” challenged Arabella, an invigorated expression on the hideous face that so resembled a wrinkled citrus. I stood there, head lowered, my lead of chains roped around her hand, sighing silently. As soon as the man nodded, Arabella tugged the chain from her fingers and practically threw me into the pit, despite my bemused growl, yet I was not surprised by this happening, nor was I the least bit shocked by the cruelty with which she minded me. I had been through this ritual many a time before: she would force me into the arena or onto the track, I would do whatever the setting called for, and it would all be over; then she would force-feed me nasty spoils for supper and lock me in the cupboard for the night. It was just one of the ways Arabella, who lived paycheck to paycheck, drew in spare cash. And yet, no matter how poor, I could never empathize with Arabella, my captor, the bane of my existence, even if she were to have a change of heart.
I faced my opponent, a mongrel through and through. She was a feral dog that had been snatched from her preferred habitat, a deserted alleyway. She snarled at me and I grabbed hold of her curled jaw, growling, snarling, shrieking; the sleazy spectators jeered and hooted. Only when I was in the arena, a slight depression in the concrete filled with gravel and dust, could I give vent to my emotions without having a gun pointed at my face. Then I realized, like I always did at this point in the fight, aggression, a twisted form of entertainment, was what the gamblers longed for; that was why they had pitted me against other dogs many times before: Cato, the mangled Pit Bull; Hercules, the towering, black-furred Poodle; Rogue, the venerated Dogue de Bordeaux, whose body was regarded with contempt in the end; Chief, the search-and-rescue dog turned fighter; Lucky, the scarred, desperate mutt . . . . All of whom I had killed or maimed . . . . And now, I was faced with this unnamed opponent, and I had the choice: I could kill her or I could choose not to—
I yielded to the lady (the spectators gasped dumbly before me, as always), and, being a barbaric sneak, she took her chance: She grabbed my neck.
I kicked and thrashed, forgetting any pretense of peace; the crowd burst into a series of cheers and whistles. My crazed opponent snarled unintelligible curses and threats into my ear as she bore me down. Wild-eyed, I screamed with pain as she grabbed my tail and nearly disemboweled it; the spectators yelled uproariously at the enlivened spectacle.
I pushed her off and, limbs entangled, we clashed. We stood on our hind paws, grabbing snout, ear and flesh in our jaws, bawling and howling and barking viciously. Then the fighting drew to an abrupt halt as she dropped down. She had had the same realization that occurred to me each time I fought, and yet I did not perceive this sudden vulnerability as an opportunity for defeat. Instead I stood there, silent, watchful. The crowd booed and yelled, some poising to leave, others shoving their fellows aside to get a better view of what was happening.
Arabella staggered to the front and slopped some Intoxicator down my fur, and I shook the liquid off, cringing in revulsion at the briny stench that wafted into my nostrils. “WHAT’S THE HOLDUP?!” she barked, leaning unsteadily to one side; some of the gamblers laughed, and one attempted to steady her, but Arabella pushed her unceremoniously away.
I shrugged slightly, but, like all People, she was too ignorant to notice. She stepped into the Intoxicator-soaked arena and forcefully kicked my side, and I yipped sharply, recoiling; all of the gamblers laughed this time. My opponent, foaming slightly at the mouth, stepped in front of me as though protecting me, and I thanked her in a croaky whisper, but she seemed not to notice.
Arabella cackled rapturously, as though joying in the dreariness of the scene. “LOOK AT THIS TRASH!” she screamed in a volume that suggested a poltergeist was hovering right in front of her. “THE FIGHTER HAS A GIRLFRIEND! ONE OF YOU GET A CAMERA!”
No one made any move to get whatever a “camera” was, but a few sfine sired.
“THANK YOU!” screamed Arabella disquietingly several minutes later, even though no one had retrieved the “camera”. Then she fainted; this time, it was me who laughed.
I had yielded. I had laughed when she had fainted. It had all seemed well, until the bullet had grazed my side . . . .
The feral dog had fled, but only after whispering a garbled word in my ear. . . . “Sheila” . . . . But I had lay there, injured . . . . I had felt as though I was going to die, just as I had when I was a young pup, lolling beside the Dumpster . . . . Then the authorities had come . . . . They had heard the gunfire, and had disapproved of what the gamblers were doing, evidently . . . . They had taken Arabella and her cronies away, and she had yelled, “I DIDN’T MEAN IT!” . . . . I was the next to go, not to prison, but to a place the People had called the Emergency Animal Hospital . . . . Now I was in a sterile room, with glaring white lights lancing my eyes . . . .
The pain was gone, and of that I was relieved, but I was also frightened, for the first time in my life. The mysteriousness of my whereabouts spooked me. And, although I could smell People, there were none in the room, strangely enough, none mending the numerous wounds I had received in the duel or the yawning cavity that had been made by the bullet . . . .
I sniffed the air warily, shocked to detect a faint but familiar scent. This was the scent that had wafted from the carcasses of my victims, but this death was not of dogs, but of People . . . .
The People were dead, and I was trapped in an unfamiliar room . . . .

Appearance:
Blue Left Eye, Brown Right Eye (Husky Genetics) Thick, longer fur on neck, chest, back, tail, and underbelly. Short fur on head and legs. Blue merle covering on back, ears, and are above eyes. Brimstone has thick, powerful legs, with muscles that clearly ripple under his thick pelt. He often has a snarl, with his unusually long canines hanging out of the jaw of his mouth. His right ears is torn from the center by a (relatively) straight line to a measure of one inch from the tip of his ear. He has a permanent bald patch on his left front hock from dogfighting. A large slash mark runs over his right eye, that digs into his eye, turning the scratch mark grey on his iris, and transparent on his whites. It digs into his cornea, leaving only a scar, healing back without any issues. Brimstone was lucky not to lose sight in that eye, or he would have been killed for lack of use. He is constantly holding himself in a dominant position, and holds strength to pounce in his hind legs. He has thick muscled chest, legs, and neck. His tail is normally held up, in a dominant, flag-like position. He is constantly scowling, his unusually long canines protruding from his jaws.
Personality:
Brimstone has many core personalities. He is wary, and takes pride in his power. He can pity those that seem of use to him, and help them rise to power, as long as they keep some use to him. He is not planning on overthrowing the Alpha, yet. He is unsure whether he will or not, but for now, is content to settle into the pack. He is cold, unforgiving, and generally emotionless to those inferior to him. He has a soft spot for elders, matriarchs, and their pups, and is kind to them. He is respectful to Lad, trying to learn how to trust him to not kick him out of the pack.
Relationships:
Lad- He is always ever wary with lad, constantly keeping a friendly demeanor to him, for not wanting to be banished. However, in the event that he is banished, or attempted to be injured, he will not hesitate to challenge Lad for his position of Alpha, and demote him instantly to Dredge. His exact plan is to not kill him, but severely cripple him, either snap to the front shoulder, or splinter one of his back legs. Therefore, Lad would become worthless, and never challenge him for his position. He would remain an example to the pack, to never question his loyalty or position of power again. He trusts him, but is wary of his power. The only reason he doesn't close in on him is that Lad is the first creature that has been somewhat of an ally to him, and he can't help but feel endeared to him.

Habits: Often lashes out, incredibly dominant, tends to 'herd' other dogs, no matter their size. He pushes them with his shoulder, or nips them. Distinctive Characteristics: Flag-like tail, thicker fur. Backstory: Brimstone came from a line of Aussie Shepherd Showdogs, but when his mother-dog was kidnapped away from their family in the country, she was relocated to the city. She was bred with a husky, trying to create a powerful dog for dogfighting. See, his mother had great jaws, and an incredible bite-force, coming from a line of family protectors, and sheep guardians. The husky was a tough sled lead-dog, and known for keeping his team in check with brute force. However, without being taken for a vet for her birthing, there were bound to be complication. Brimstone was the first of the pups, coming out with a loud, angry howl, instantly sensing the air of hatred of the people around him. The weakened mother could not continue her birth, and spent the last of her minutes licking her first-born pup, struggling with a body full of puppies. After hours of birth, Brimstone's younger brother and sister came to the world. His sister was instantly killed, when her small lungs collapsed. The young male fought for his life, but he too could not survive the fatal birthing.
Brimstone was raised to hate other dogs, constantly being pushed around by elder, crueler dogs. He became bitter, growing stronger and becoming hateful to the world. He learned to push back, using his instinctual leadership, herding skills, and bitter rage to fight back, wound, maim, cripple, and kill the dogs he grew up around. When it was determined he was ready for the ring, at 1 1/2 years of age, he was put in his first arena, with the task to kill a young Bully Kutta. He found himself struggling to prove the sadistic pleasure of his humans. After all, he had no mother dog to teach him right from wrong. No, his first seconds of life were an angry scream, and a front row seat of his siblings' and mother's downfalls. He fought for his life, and the Bully Kutta had locked onto his throat, and would have severed his jugular vein if not for his thick fur. With a last desperate, wild, violent kick, he was able to crack the jaw of the young female, and from there on, he was able to win. He learned from that fight that he could never let his guard down.
He is now trapped in his cage, unable to chew out of his prison due to a muzzle constantly upon him, from an attack in which he fractured the tibia of a human. Since the people have been destroyed by the epidemic, he is trapped. ~Ɓαттℓє Scαяѕ~

At first glance, April would seem more like a Golden Retriever than a German Shepard. Her coat is mostly gold, but there are patches of varying shades of brown and black scattered all over her pelt. Her fur is relatively short and extremely soft. Her ears flop over slightly, but stick up enough to be slightly awkward and very cute. April is not very intimidating despite her muscular body and size, though she has been told by many that she is could be if she wanted too. Her eyes are a deep chocolate brown which almost always shine with mischief and youth. She has a claw mark on her shoulder.
Personality: April is a force to be reckoned with. She is sarcastic, sassy, and quick witted. She almost always has the right intentions, but her attitude can sometimes send the wrong message, causing her to get into trouble if she isn't careful. The thought of overthrowing any of her superiors has never crossed her mind before, but it just might in the near future. She is a rule follower and fiercely loyal, especially to her own kin. Woodrow has a robust torso, with a deep, voluminous chest and moderately long legs with longer–than–normal hair covering the “elbows”. His coat is shaggy and wavy, curly in a few places, and grows very rapidly, to the point where he will sometimes have to bite it off in order to manage it. His densely-packed undercoat is a creamy shade of white, while the loose, billowy outer fur is pigmented with pale shades of cream, brown, tan and white, with coarser dark brown hairs ticking and brindling many spots. He has two tufts of fur protruding from above each of his eyes like eyebrows and exceptionally long, black eyelashes. His ears are loose and floppy and will grow hair in a poodle-like way, while the contours of his snout and chin are obstructed by his trademark “goatee” and moustache. The sides of his face are covered with splayed hairs that give his head a strangely dinner plate–like shape, while the skull and snout are somewhat narrow, albeit not very, underneath. Woodrow has stiff, black whiskers growing on various places including his chin, cheeks, and “brow tufts” (eyebrows), and his nose and eyes are both black. His claws are largely melanistic, although one or two are either a pale tan or a snail shell brown. His paw pads, or “footpads,” are weathered and brown, with faint hints of black and pink in some places, and the paws themselves resemble “cat feet,” meaning they are relatively compact, albeit covered with shaggy fur, which gives them the appearance of “hare feet.” The underside, or downward-facing side of his curly tail is lined with feathery white plumages, giving it a “plumed” appearance.

Stalwart—You can trust Woodrow to be honest and loyal, although he is often (unintentionally) unreliable.
Arrogant—Woodrow is arrogant, not in a rude, sniveling way, but in a way that comes naturally to him. In spite of this, he is a good–intentioned dog and would never wrong anyone, at least not intentionally.
Resourceful—Woodrow is a good food scavenger, often eating berries, blossoms, carrion, and leaves. And, although he isn’t exactly smart, he has a knack for invention and innovation, always forging new mechanisms that help him to survive in the harsh new world he has found himself in.

BACKSTORY
Woodrow once belonged to a newlywed couple, Phoebe and Petra. Woodrow had been named by his first fosterer for his “facial hair,” and Phoebe, who had wanted to re–name him Fluffy-Boo, agreed to keep the name only because it would have been cruel to change it after the dog had been called Woodrow for all his life.
Woodrow lived with Petra and Phoebe for only two years, having spent the first of his three years switching from foster home to foster home. The two perished hand in hand, and Woodrow had no choice but to leave the rural neighborhood in search of new Safeguarded. It was instinct that compelled him to do this: He had always been intuitive through and through, and he was confident that instinct could never fail him.
It was only shortly after worming through the hole in the fence for the last time, hopelessly confused, however, that Woodrow discovered that there were no People left.
All alone in the streets of the conurbation, dark, deserted alleyways surrounding him, promising death, Woodrow believes that he must either live an individualistic life or suffer a death in vain.
But there could possibly be another way, he soon discovers. He can sense other dogs nearby, and, being hopelessly gregarious, he proceeds to weed them out from the jumble of odors the metropolis has to offer—only to discover that there are more dangers out there than he thought . . .

Woodrow has an unusually wide vocal range, from Wookiee–like growling sounds to baying barks. When alarmed or alert, he will give very loud, fluent barks, while he will bark more quietly (and more annoyingly) when impatient or needy. The Epidemic: The Epidemic is the fatal disease that annihilated the Safeguarded and created the Beasts. This disease is the main event of the story, and is what gave rise to the plotline of The Wilderness to begin with. It is unknown how the Epidemic came to be, but few dogs dare study the Beasts for fear of being attacked or contracting illnesses/parasites.
The Ruin Dwellers—a pack of former pets that now lurk the human-free conurbation (not to be confused with Ruin Dwellers, the plural form of Ruin Dweller)
Ruin Dweller—a term used to denote an individual member or members of The Ruin Dwellers
Human—singular form of People (not to be confused with Person, which is not an existent word in the dog language)
People—plural form of Human (not to be confused with Humans, a word that does not exist in the dog language)
The Safeguarded—The Safeguarded is the collective name for the innumerable amount of People that were once loved and guarded by dogs. Dogs lovingly referred to the Safeguarded they took care of as "their" Safeguarded. Note that a capital "T" distinguishes The Safeguarded from any similar wordings that may occur.
Safeguarded—singular form of The Safeguarded. This term may also be used in referral to particular Safeguarded.
Beast—a Human that somehow survived the epidemic yet still exhibits some of its aftereffects. Beasts are discolored, sickly, and parasite-ridden, and they often cough and vomit continuously. Their teeth and gums are blackened from disease, their clothes are filthy and bedraggled, and their hair is sparse, gray and wispy. They are hardly self-aware, and almost verge insentience. The only things they do are eat, drink, gamble, and, on occasion, pursue any moving object that attracts their attention. They have strangely animal-like prey drives, and thus the dogs try to avoid them. Beasts cannot reproduce, fortunately, which, thankfully, may lead to a dwindle in population at some point. Beasts are often seen hacking, vomiting, stumbling, or drinking the Intoxicator (see Intoxicator below.)
Woman—a term used to denote a female dog, particularly an adult one; the term ‘female’ may also be used
Gentlewoman—a term used to denote a female dog of high rank or high social standing Lady, lass, dame, broad, gal, all the like—see ‘Woman’
Girl—a term used to denote a female dog, particularly a young one; the terms ‘female pup’ and ‘young female’ may also be used
Man—a term used to denote a male dog, particularly an adult one; the term ‘male’ may also be used
Gentleman—a term used to denote a male dog of high rank or high social standing Chap, bloke, dude, guy, fella, lad, all the like—see ‘Man’
Boy—a term used to denote a male dog, particularly a young one; the terms ‘male pup’ and ‘young male’ may also be used
-man or –woman (suffix): a suffix attached to a word in order to denote a particular gender
Nomad—a nomadic, solitary dog who has an interrelationship with the pack and has been permitted by the Alpha to trade with or sell to the pack. Nomads are not permitted to hunt or camp within the territory, however, and may only eat or camp on the grounds if the Alpha has expressly offered them the aforementioned privileges.
Trader—a type of Nomad who trades or barters valuables or otherwise appealing objects
Furrier—a Nomadic craftsman or -woman who captures animals, skins them, and sells the furs
Tanner—a type of Nomad who produces leather from the skins of animals. Leather is traditionally sold to Clothiers and everyday consumers.
Jeweler—a type of Nomad who sells precious stones or metals to Traders, industrialists or everyday consumers
Smith—a Nomadic craftsman or -woman who crafts objects from metal
Armorer—a Smith who specializes particularly in armor and/or weaponry, and may not only craft armor and weaponry, but also repair it.
Clothier—a Nomadic maker of cloth or clothing
Outsider—a dog not allied or interlinked with any pack or organization
Sister Pack—a neighboring or otherwise familiar pack that the Ruin Dwellers might ally themselves with in times of hardship or battle. The Sister Packs and The Ruin Dwellers are otherwise quite neutral, and tend to avoid one another outside of the aforementioned times.
Harry—a gang of criminals, troublemakers or rebels, with Outsiders typically constituting the entirety of the group. The main goal of a Harry is to stir up trouble, which is exactly what these miscreant bands do. These motley gangs average about 5-7 dogs per group, and are nicknamed ‘Harries’ because of the way they relentlessly pester their larger and more organized counterparts.
The Intoxicator—the Intoxicator is a substance that the Beasts seem to be addicted to. Not much is known about the Intoxicator, except that it seems to make the Beasts ditzy, which allows for some pretty lucky escapes, at times.
Dogfighting—Dogfighting is a sport favored by the Beasts. In Dogfighting, Beasts pit two chosen dogs against one another and force them to fight. The victor is placed in yet another dog fight upon winning. The Beasts seem to find pleasure in this insane practice for some cruel reason.
Curses
“Sseus!”—an exclamation denoting any of the many negative emotions (e.g. resentment or annoyance)
Derived from Latin Οδυσσευς (Odysseus), which is derived from Greek odussaō = 'I hate, I am angry'
Pronunciation: SEE-us
Example: “Sseus, we’ve been seeing a lot of Harries lately.”
Related Forms: Sseused (Those Sseused idiots!”)
“Achos!”—an exclamation denoting sudden pain, shock, anger, or frustration
Derived from Greek αχος (achos) = 'pain, distress'
Pronunciation: EY-chos (Long O)
Example: “Achos! My claw snagged on a stupid vine!”
“Thjost!”—an exclamation denoting fury or rage
Derived from Germanic name element þjóstr = 'anger', 'fury', ‘violence’
Pronunciation: ThJOST (Short O)
Example: “Thjost, I ought to kill that mischief-making little cur!”
“Komuot!”—an exclamation denoting disbelief
Combination of Japanese ko = 'child' and Old High German muot = ‘anger’, ‘wrath’
Pronunciation: KO-mew-ot (First O: Long; Second O: Short)
Meaning: “Wrath’s child”
Example: “Komuot! Is what you said really true?”
Common Phrases:“Lapdog!”—an insult conveying that one is still a mollycoddled pet who pines for his People, despite having learned they are dead.
“Pet!”—see “Lapdog.”
“Rotbrain!”—an insult conveying that one’s brain has rotted, ergo denoting that one is dumb or imbecilic. “Rothead” is also used.
“Cur!”—an insult denoting that one is a wild, unrefined beast.
“Commandhound!”—an insult denoting that one is a lowly servant to the People, even though the only People left are the Beasts.
“Slavejaw!”—an insult denoting that one is a fighting dog who has been pitted against another fighting dog for the pleasure of People—more specifically, Beasts.
“Magpie-smart”—a compliment denoting that one is as intelligent as a magpie. “Raven-smart” is also used.

Meaning: “Fresh blossoms/flowers” or “Blossoms/flowers and cool weather”
About: The equivalent of spring, Sval’anthea is a favored season among the Ruin Dwellers, for it signifies plentiful prey and fair weather. Water is plentiful in Sval’anthea—in fact, a little too plentiful, for this season is subject to flooding. Sval’anthea’s days vary in form, from crisp and sunshiny to gray and rain-laden.
Average Temperature: 65° Fahrenheit

AKUNA
Combination of the Japanese name Akira ('bright') and the Icelandic name Funi (‘flame’, ‘fire’)
Meaning: “Bright fire” or “Bright flame”
About: The equivalent of summer, Akuna is the time when the sun is brightest and hottest. The temperature in Akuna is dangerously high, so dogs are advised to remain within their dens unless it is either dawn or dusk, times when the heat lessens its grip; pups are the most vulnerable to fatalities caused by heat, so parents are advised to keep their young in a cool, shaded place. Akuna is a time of suffering for the dogs, in that there are few hours when it is safe to go outdoors. Extremities commonly seen in Akuna include droughts and wildfires.
Average Temperature: 95° Fahrenheit—100° Fahrenheit
Average Weather: cloudless, dry, sweltering
SADAMA
Combination of the Finnish word sade ('rain') and the Arabic name Sama (‘sky’)
Meaning: “Rainy sky” or “Gray sky”
About: Sadama is the equivalent of autumn. It is the grayest of the seasons; in fact, there’s hardly a Sadama’s day that doesn’t see torrential rain. The air turns drier and colder near the end of Sadama, when Kaldnore is approaching.
Average Temperature: 50° Fahrenheit
Average Weather: humid, chilly, rainy, overcast
KALDNORE
Combination of Old Norse Kalda (‘cold’, ‘chill’) and Greenlandic Anore (‘wind’)
Meaning: “Cold wind”
About: Kaldnore is the equivalent of winter. There are far less extremities than you’d expect, however; the cold seasons are altogether quite mild where the Ruin Dwellers live, and thus more than an inch of snow is hardly ever seen, despite the frigidity of the air. There is usually more sleet than snow in early Kaldnore, and the temperature might reach as high as 50° Fahrenheit; during mid-Kaldnore, however, minute quantities of light snow can be seen.
Average Temperature: 38° Fahrenheit
Average Weather: cold, dreary, sleety

Q: What is the setting of this RP?
A: After humanity is annihilated by a fatal epidemic, the dogs that remain must learn to fend for themselves. Some of these dogs regroup to form a small, loosely-knit organization that is named The Ruin Dwellers (the dogs choose to live in the deserted town) shortly thereafter. This RP follows the struggles of these dogs, and, roughly as Ɓαттℓє Scαяѕ put it, their gradual transition into a close-knit pack with a culture and hierarchy. To find out more, take a look at the RP.
Q: Who are the moderators?
A: Mongrel and Ɓαттℓє Scαяѕ.
Q: Is this RP based off of or related to Survivors?
A: No. This RP is not interlinked or related to Survivors in any way, apart from a single common feature: dogs. None of the terminology used in the Survivors series is used in The Wilderness, nor does The Wilderness mirror Survivors in any fashion.
Q: Can I have a wolf, coyote or fox?
A: No. This RP revolves around dogs, not other canids.
Q: How about hybrids? (Wolfdogs, coydogs, etc.)
A: Certainly not.
Q: Are there any forbidden breeds?
A: Officially? No. However, it is required that you contact a mod if you plan to have a potentially OP breed such as a Tibetan Mastiff or Czechoslovakian Wolfdog.
Q: I’m confused; do the dogs have opposable thumbs?
A: No. The dogs have not evolved to that primate-like capacity in such a short period of time, and certainly never will. Instead of carrying things by means of hands—or, in this case, paws—the dogs carry and maneuver objects with their mouths.
Q: How do the dogs make all this stuff? (Clothing, weapons, etc.)
A: Clothing usually has a simple pattern that more skilled dogs can easily weave using their teeth. Leather is made using a process similar to that of humans. Animals are skinned with the claws and teeth. Gold is sifted and jewels are either stolen, smuggled or collected. Weapons and other metal objects are crafted using tongs that are gripped with the mouth. How is the metal produced, you ask? Objects such as silverware or tin cans are liquidized with fire. The result is a liquid that can be molded into most anything.
