---Felix--- Felix was chopping some onions for a stew, he personally liked stew, I mean what a perfect way to use up old ingredients, and stretch the meat, and plenty filling. The kitchen smelled of beef and sage. Felix took a deep breath, and dropped the onions in a large pot. He wondered what this crew would be like. He wondered if the would like his stew, more then anything though he was dorky like that. He was a people person as well. Felix had always loved people, his brother though, well he wasn't very social. As Felix was chopping some potatoes, he cut open his thumb, it poured blood out on the cutting broad he quickly dropped his knife and rushed to the sink, rinsing off his wound. He reached over to the small first aid kit, ripping it open and grabbing a bandage. He slapped it on and carried on with his work. For someone who had trained in knife work since he was just a teen, and had been working with knives for seventeen years. He was thirty-two now, he felt like he'd wasted his life, with the military's dirty work. He walked back over to the cutting broad, pushing the potatoes into the trash. Ruined, No use to anyone any more. Was he talking about him or the potatoes? He sighed loudly and walked into the back of the kitchen grabbing a 50lb bag of potatoes swinging it over his shoulder, he felt the muscles in his arms and back and chest, strain against the weight. And put it on the ground next to the cutting broad which he discarded into the sink, and grabbed another one same with the knife. He started peeling and chopping again. He honestly like how the tattoos on his arms moved as his muscles and hands did, he liked how the name βKikiβ on his hand pulled and looked distorted. Kiki had been his daughter, Kaija was her name. She was young when she passed with his wife- girlfriend he hadn't proposed yet. He was going to the night she passed. Kaija didn't survive much longer then her mother did. His girlfriends parents didn't above him. He was older then her. He found himself thinking of her more and more of lately. Damn, he nicked his thumb again he needed to pay more attention he shook the thoughts of his babies smile, and cleaned his wound once again. This time he didn't need to start over on the potatoes. He saw the lights flicker on, outside of the kitchen. He smiled they had arrived. Beautiful. He Heard DAISy's voice, they where nice. He liked them quite a little cutie of a A.I. Felix planned on fathering this little ankle biter so hard. They reminded him of kiki.
---Mark--- Crap, he was late, how could he. His alarm hadn't gone off, damned thing. He sat up, pulling his useless legs with his arms the accident had only been eleven years ago, shortly before he had joined the military. He pulled himself into his wheelchair, rolling over to his drawers, grabbing some clothes. He rolled into the shower he had specially installed. When he was finished he rolled to the mirror, he need to shave he looked disgusting. He wasn't going too. Apparently a old friend of his was gonna be on one of the ships, Kaitlin. He missed her deeply. He honestly hadn't been so close with anyone before. He grabbed taxi and headed to the port, he caught the group as the gathered into the ship, he waved. βWait! One second!β he yelled. Got caught up to them. Smiling at the group βHello I am Mar Snyder.β a pleasure to be her. Mar was lying it wasn't a pleasure to be anywhere but home. But he had to play nice as Felix would say. He hated Felix that hadn't even grown up together. Felix had grown up in a jersey colony, and he had grown up in a British one. He looked at the red her girl βVeronica Shepard?β he asked raising a eyebrow.

Akilah, with her keen vision, looked at him through the plate of glass. In her vision, the glass wasn't crystal clear and one hundred percent translucent, as if she saw Him if he were a foot away. No, it was a milky film separating them, a barrier. She could see, with her clawed hand and the thick space between to his hand, up against the glass, that it was a distance, yet so close. So close...to a friend. That's what she decided to call Him -- her friend. He wasn't cruel, disgusting, or mean to her. He was...well, loving. She could tell by the way he spoke, the way he acted. Yes, even with the thick glass between them, she could detect the sour aroma of fear wafting from him, but it was diluted. It was a humane, natural fear, because she knew that she was dangerous. She didn't have to know who or what she was to know that she was dangerous. But would she ever hurt him? Not ever.
She heard his sound, his signature sound -- a hum. It was...mimicking, but not the mocking that the Others did. It was like, he was trying to communicate in return to her own soft humming. His was vocal, whereas hers was almost a deeper sound within. He made his voice make the hum, and she hummed from the heart deep inside. And it almost amused her, because His sound was off -- way off. It was almost like as if she opened her outer mouth and tried to speak a greeting in His language; it would be off, broken, out of tune and order probably. But she accepted his humming. But that was when she heard his words. She couldn't understand most of them, as she was still learning words and sounds of speech and vocalizing letters. But one word she knew, among the disgusting tasteless ones, was safe. He repeated it in his words, over and over and over, and it was a lulling word that Akilah liked the sound of.
She let out a softer, whisper of a hum, almost a single note of a tune, and gently shifted forward so her smooth curve of a head pressed against the glass. The smoothness was almost a shell, like a skull if you will. and it was just barely soft enough, just malleable, that it pressed to the glass like the soft pads of her skinny-fingered hands did. She let out her soft, melodic hum in return to his words, to safe. Because she indeed feel that when He was around. Yes, he was a Being, one of them that tortured her, however dangerous she was. But he was nice. He did his work with niceness, and she liked that about him.
A click, and a gasp, came in a sharp second later, and Akilah immediately changed her whole quiet and calm demeanor to alarm and alert when she noticed the window room's door opening. Her vision noticed one of the mean Beings, one who liked to jab the pole at her, sometimes for work, sometimes for fun. She hissed at him through the glass, her black lips pulled back in a snarl over her silver teeth, little driblets of clear saliva coating her teeth and lip as she hissed and snarled at him. Her long speared tail coiled and lashed, snaking around the space behind her, as she tensed. Just at the sight of him made her want to spit and snarl and hiss and growl, just as she was doing now.
For a single split second did she think that her friend had betrayed her, turning into what He really is, a mean Being, using niceness to trick her. She looked between the two, backing into the dark corner of her cell, spitting her saliva at the window and the floor, keeping her distance. But she paused, her growl a lingering sound in the cell, when she watched Him turn the Other way with such abruptness that it almost startled her. She watched, and soon, the Other was gone. But she didn't move. She only stayed where she was, slowly sinking to the floor to press the flats of her skinny hands to the floor, keeping her sharp vision on the Other as he left briskly out of sight. She gave a good spit at the wall in the direction of his departure for good measure, a half growl if disgust sounding afterwards.
[ quoting for Cat for whenever she can reply n.n @madeofstarstuff ] It was Jacob Van Der Berg who entered, his eyes glaring into the back of Karim's skull from the moment he stepped into the room, practically forcing Karim to whip around and blink at the man. Jacob β once Karim's friend, a coworker who he'd admired and trusted and thought of almost as a... well, it didn't matter anymore. They were no longer friends. Karim wouldn't trust him with anything, and he definitely didn't admire him, not after everything Karim had seen him to, both to Akilah and his words to the few women in the lab. Jacob's eyebrow raised in β confusion? Annoyance? He couldn't tell, but the other looked some mixture of both. Jacob paused, running his fingers through his dark red hair, eyes flickering up and down Karim and Akilah. He smiled one of those half smiles, the kind that sent a pulse through one's body (not the good kind, either, one of the hurting and angry kind of smiles.) βDon't worry β I'm not gonna touch the little monster,β Jacob said, the tone in his voice taunting. He stretched, brushing his knuckles against the back of his neck in a gesture that almost made Karim wince. βI'm just here for a few vials of the effing thing's blood. Acid more like, huh?β
Karim swallowed, taking a deep breath, closing his eyes for the second it took for him to mentally utter a prayer. Thing, monster? Akilah was no monster, no thing β she was so much more than that. How had he ever felt safe around Jacob... ever felt anything friendly about him at all? He terrified him, if he was being completely honest. Well β not him, but what he could do. What he could do to Akilah or Karim's reputation or... well, based on this alone, he could make sure that Karim never stepped foot in the lab ever again.
But β before Karim could say anything, Jacob was exiting, flashing back a smug smile and raising one eyebrow. To another, the gesture would've been friendly perhaps, or competitive... but it wasn't. Maybe once, long ago. He turned his gaze back towards the cage, the sound of Jacob's footsteps comforting to him, though not as much as it probably comforted her. She looked terrified. He couldn't read her emotions as well as he could read another human's, but he recognized it, the fear she was holding within her, fear which could so easily blow up and ruin everything. If they let her out of their sight for even a second... he'd seen what she could, potentially, do. The thought scared him, but she wouldn't hurt him β no, if anything, he'd help her.
βAsif,β he said, the apology sounding bitter in his mouth. Hell, his native tongue sounded bitter, although somewhat bittersweet, the words a mixture of comfort and regret on his lips. He missed his homeland, but he wasn't there anymore, and the chances of him returning anytime soon were slim, if not impossible. He missed his sisters and brothers, his cousins, his nieces and nephews... his entire family, waiting back home for him to come back. Bring home a wife! his father had said, the words teasing, his mother laughing, his sister Amina smiling oh so brightly as she held the arm of her betrothed. They'd been happy then, so many years ago.
This was no time for memories, though. βI am so sorry that they hurt you,β he whispered, leaning close to the glass, the smudge from his fingerprints somewhat obscuring his vision β he'd have to get some glass cleaner. He may have never truly felt love, but Akilah... his feelings for her were about as close as he'd get to love. Family. Maybe she didn't have a family, but she had him.

Ethandidn't have to become silent when both commanders and the general walked in - he already had been - his mind cluttered with thoughts that he hadn't ever taken the time to think through. Sure, he figured this mission would be dangerous, but he'd never really went through the specifics. It was only when the General turned and began to address the group as a whole that he started to pay any attention. He knew it was incredibly rude, and he had probably missed some important details already, but it just seemed suddenly like everything was happening so fast. Casualties. That was the word. Yes, naturally, everyone in the room seemed to stiffen a little at that word. At least, he knew he did. It wasn't his own death that scared him - if he died for his planet, even his galaxy, he'd be proud - it was the fact that he knew he was going to become friends with everyone else on his ship. He just knew it. He trusted people so easily, it really was awful, and half the time he ended up caring for people more than they cared for him. Every loss they took, he knew he would feel it. It wasn't a good thing to think about, so he just stopped, instead focusing on the pep-talk part of the speech.
He'd split the General's speech into three simple parts in his head - praising, the mission (the part he'd actually really payed attention to), and the uplifting ending. "per aspera ad astra. Through hardship to the stars." Was his favorite part of the speech, although he felt like he was stupid for never hearing it until that moment. "We have a saying on earth,"? Was he the only human who had honestly never heard that? He didn't have much time to think it through much more, because his name was called, and it literally caused him to jump. He'd almost yelled, too, but thankfully he wasn't stupid enough to let himself do that.
Starting a brisk pace towards the ship, he situated himself in the small crowd that consisted of everyone else on the Andromeda. He tried to remember all of the names he'd heard, but he'd been so scatterbrained that he could only remember Shepherd calling his name. It was tough, trying to look through the crowd and decide who the other pilots were. After a few moments, he just gave up, throwing his hands up into the air with a sigh of defeat that got a few weird looks. His face broke into a grin as he saw the ship, everything else forgotten, and he couldn't help himself. He walked over and lightly skimmed his hand across the beautiful thing, resisting the urge to just hug it. He really should be acting so much more professional, but what could he say, he was definitely still a kid at heart. His eyes trained back on Commander Shepherd as everyone else started to join her on the ramp. It was nearly impossible not to push to the front of the crowd and walk inside, but he managed somehow. Breathing a sigh, he forced himself to relax a little, focusing his attention on waiting with the rest of the crew. He needed to be more serious, so far he was really failing.
----
Retoruna immediately snapped to attention as the General walked in - a force of habit - and looked over both commanders. She felt a little dizzy from it all, just like she had on the way there. Not to mention, she was standing in the same proximity as royalty - she really felt the need to be on her knees, in a bow, rather than standing at attention. When she realized that nobody else was really at attention, she relaxed slightly.
Runa, similar to a lot of people, hates change. Her entire life, changes of locations and homes and friends were always forced upon her. Now, she can finally make her own decisions. And that means staying in one spot, one rank, one house, for as long as possible. So, why the hell did she agree to do this mission? She'd asked herself that same question plenty of times. It wasn't for the thrill, it wasn't for the adventure, it wasn't for friendships, it definitely wasn't for change. Most people would say "it's my duty" or "for Vasakaya" or "for the Galaxy". Sure, all of those were a part of this, but she was only a soldier. It's not like they couldn't replace her. Hell, they didn't even tell her what team she's on, "they forgot", that's how insignificant she is to the mission. The soldiers on each team blur together for all of the important Generals and Commanders. Everyone else is incredibly brilliant in some way, and the soldiers, we can just fight. Unimportant, faceless men and women. Maybe we'll make a few friends on the teams, sure. But at the end of the day, they still had the most basic role of all, and their deaths would barely affect the mission. Really, she wouldn't be surprised if they had another ten soldiers lined up to take the places of the soon-to-be fallen. So, again, she asked herself, why?
The General slowly transitioned into a speech, one that she paid close attention to. She didn't know much about the mission, that was for sure, and she'd take any information she could get. She glanced over at Bryn, noting that her wings were tucked against her back, and doing the same. She felt the sudden urge to bow again, and managed to just focus on the General again. After he moved past complimenting them all, he started to describe the mission in detail. When he mentioned kinetics, she shivered.
It wasn't that she didn't like kinetics, as so many did, it was just that, so many were uncontrollable and dangerous. She'd met one once, when she was only six, at some random foster home - all of the names from age 10 and below blurred together - and when she'd asked a little girl to play dolls, all the windows smashed. She remembered that moment perfectly, standing completely still as thousands of glass shards stood still in the air, pointed at her. The kinetic had sent a few shards through her arms and legs, but she'd thankfully been ok.
The General moved on to the last part, hyping them all up for the mission. Nothing he said really got rid of any of her nervousness, but it did take the edge off a little. Shepherd had started to list out names - none of which were her own - and so she carefully turned toward the Cassiopeia.
{did this all on my phone & im sooo tired so I formally apologize if there are any mistakes. }
