Once the surprise filtered away, Karim smiled softly at the response β her hand (claws? paw? he didn't know the precise name, but it was basically a hand) laid directly over his, the soft quiet noise that she'd made, sounding almost sweet and song-like. He tried copying her, to try and show that he sort of understood what she meant β she was happier, if he was guessing right. Not happy, per say, but happier. The sound wasn't quite right, he couldn't get the humming perfect, but if she understood what he meant... then maybe it would make her a little bit happy. Honestly, Akilah was quite terrifying. He was scared of her, though the fear had lessened. Her claws, teeth, tail, mouth... they would've scared anyone, not just him. She did scare the other scientists β maybe that was why they hated her even more. Nobody liked anything that they were afraid of. But... while her appearance was terrifying, that was only her appearance. Yes, she could've easily killed one of them were she out of her cage. But would she? Perhaps in self defense. Anyone would've killed in self defense β even he would've, were it the only way for him to make it out alive. He wished that, at the least, they'd treat her better. Give her a larger cage (because she'd grow too big for this one), feed her better food, not taunt her with words she didn't understand but likely caught the meaning of. It was sick, that they'd treat her like an animal. Yes, she was terrifying. Yes, she couldn't truly understand their language (but he wouldn't be surprised if she managed to speak, eventually.) But if she made one wrong move, protested in any way, shape, or form... then they'd treat her even worse. βThis is inhumane! We shouldn't be treating it like this,β one of the other scientists had said, and then disappeared a day later. They couldn't speak out ,and most of them had grown to despise her. Despise her for what her race had done in the past (or what they assumed her race had done.) Despise her for her very existence. Despise her for the fact that they could do whatever they wanted to her and it wouldn't matter because she was stuck behind thick glass with no way out. In the past, Karim had wondered what he could possibly do to get her out of there. Her very blood was practically acid β if he had to, he could break open one of the vials and use that to burn down the glass. He could get his hands on a gun and get her to safely. Even if it meant he might die, or get thrown in jail, or tortured for her whereabouts. If he could do anything to help her escape, he would. But that was the problem: there was nothing he could do. Even if he managed to get her out of there, where would he take her? Where could they go? Even if they could escape, it wasn't like she'd blend in. Maybe far, far away, in the outer reaches of the galaxy, she could blend in somehow. She didn't look at all human β unless, somehow, there was a way she could. But they hadn't been able to find anything, any disguise mechanisms, nothing. So, even if they managed to leave, even if he somehow managed to get her out of there, the most he could do would be to pray that they could survive long enough for him to get her back to her people, where she would be safe. Akilah deserved that much. No, she deserved more. Though it pained him to even think of it, she deserved vengeance for what they'd done to her. He almost shook his head to physically clear the thoughts, but it wouldn't help. He kept his hand on the glass, smiling at her. He could almost picture her as a human child β she was so young, so inexperienced... but she'd gone through so much already. So much pain and torture and β and there was so little he could do. βNo matter what, I'll do what I can to keep you as safe as possible,β he said to her now, keeping his voice low so she could somewhat hear his words but so nobody else could possibly pick up on it. βI promise you, I'll make sure you're safe.β Akilah, with her keen vision, looked at him through the plate of glass. In her vision, the glass wasn't crystal clear and one hundred percent translucent, as if she saw Him if he were a foot away. No, it was a milky film separating them, a barrier. She could see, with her clawed hand and the thick space between to his hand, up against the glass, that it was a distance, yet so close. So close...to a friend. That's what she decided to call Him -- her friend. He wasn't cruel, disgusting, or mean to her. He was...well, loving. She could tell by the way he spoke, the way he acted. Yes, even with the thick glass between them, she could detect the sour aroma of fear wafting from him, but it was diluted. It was a humane, natural fear, because she knew that she was dangerous. She didn't have to know who or what she was to know that she was dangerous. But would she ever hurt him? Not ever.
She heard his sound, his signature sound -- a hum. It was...mimicking, but not the mocking that the Others did. It was like, he was trying to communicate in return to her own soft humming. His was vocal, whereas hers was almost a deeper sound within. He made his voice make the hum, and she hummed from the heart deep inside. And it almost amused her, because His sound was off -- way off. It was almost like as if she opened her outer mouth and tried to speak a greeting in His language; it would be off, broken, out of tune and order probably. But she accepted his humming. But that was when she heard his words. She couldn't understand most of them, as she was still learning words and sounds of speech and vocalizing letters. But one word she knew, among the disgusting tasteless ones, was safe. He repeated it in his words, over and over and over, and it was a lulling word that Akilah liked the sound of.
She let out a softer, whisper of a hum, almost a single note of a tune, and gently shifted forward so her smooth curve of a head pressed against the glass. The smoothness was almost a shell, like a skull if you will. and it was just barely soft enough, just malleable, that it pressed to the glass like the soft pads of her skinny-fingered hands did. She let out her soft, melodic hum in return to his words, to safe. Because she indeed feel that when He was around. Yes, he was a Being, one of them that tortured her, however dangerous she was. But he was nice. He did his work with niceness, and she liked that about him.
A click, and a gasp, came in a sharp second later, and Akilah immediately changed her whole quiet and calm demeanor to alarm and alert when she noticed the window room's door opening. Her vision noticed one of the mean Beings, one who liked to jab the pole at her, sometimes for work, sometimes for fun. She hissed at him through the glass, her black lips pulled back in a snarl over her silver teeth, little driblets of clear saliva coating her teeth and lip as she hissed and snarled at him. Her long speared tail coiled and lashed, snaking around the space behind her, as she tensed. Just at the sight of him made her want to spit and snarl and hiss and growl, just as she was doing now.
For a single split second did she think that her friend had betrayed her, turning into what He really is, a mean Being, using niceness to trick her. She looked between the two, backing into the dark corner of her cell, spitting her saliva at the window and the floor, keeping her distance. But she paused, her growl a lingering sound in the cell, when she watched Him turn the Other way with such abruptness that it almost startled her. She watched, and soon, the Other was gone. But she didn't move. She only stayed where she was, slowly sinking to the floor to press the flats of her skinny hands to the floor, keeping her sharp vision on the Other as he left briskly out of sight. She gave a good spit at the wall in the direction of his departure for good measure, a half growl if disgust sounding afterwards.
