the descendants
Status open, joining encouraged In a circle of stones upon a black ridge, countless cats sit still as the boulders around them, each darkened pelt glittering as though though they had stolen the stars from the blank sky above. There is no wind or trees, and the grass is still, but the night is filled with a faded whispering, too low to make out the words. Perched at the crest of the hill are five figures with eyes shining with the light of the absent full moon, their gaze seeming to beckon you forward. Your ears strain as you step forward, the whispering growing more urgent but no more clear. As you pass through the crowd, the stars in the cats' pelts blink out one by one, as as you brush by each silhouette it fades until you are standing alone, face to face with the five, and the whispers fall silent.
"They will come."
The five speak as one now, the intensity of their shared voice rattling inside your skull. Their gazes weigh down on you until you feel you may as well be buried beneath the stones. But even as the panic of suffocating overwhelms you, you cannot move from the ever-brightening glow of their gaze, until all the world turns to blank white and you feel you may never breathe again.
You open your eyes to the familiar scent of your home, shaken by the vivid dream. Nightmare? You blink away the images of the strange dream, unaware that it will be visiting you again soon. β§ β¬ β΅ β΄ β― βMain Plot
Arc One: The Call
The Five Great Clans died long ago, many generations now, and their descendants were scattered across the land. Though stories of the warrior code and the heroic deeds done in its name have been passed down, its laws have been long since forgotten and StarClan all but faded away. In a last effort to preserve themselves and memory of the warrior code, the last warriors of StarClan - confused and half-faded shadows of their former selves - call out to their last living descendants. Across the land, cats begin having strange dreams. Although they begin merely as an odd nightmare, many cats begin seeing shadows flickering or wisps of starlight in the forest, accompanied by the whispered, ominous words: "They will come."
When and if the Descendants begin to find one another, StarClan intends to encourage them to reform the Clans, whether as recreations of the old five or as something new. StarClan itself is split over this decision; some believe that there is no point if the Clans cannot be reformed as they once were, while others feel that perhaps adapting to a new age is best. Some still think that it would be better if the Clans were forgotten altogether. But of course, the spirits of StarClan aren't the only ghosts with an interest in the fate of the new Clans, and the Dark Forest stirs anew as well. Even so, all the spirits, good and evil, have begun to fade away as they are forgotten, and their memories of their lives and their Clans are only half-remembered. Between their lost memories, the weakness of their powers, and the lack of unity amongst the spirits, StarClan's ability to guide the new Clans as they form is precarious.
β§ β¬ β΅ β΄ β― β
Subplots
β§ Cats who are not Descendants may take an interest in the new Clan(s) as they form. Some might be loners or rogues in the area who are not so keen on new competition, perhaps even directly fighting with the Descendants for territory. Others might be non-Descendants interested in talk of Clan life. How the Descendants will deal with these outsiders remains to be seen.
β¬ Though the spirits of the Dark Forest are just as faded and forgotten as StarClan, they may seek to use StarClan's division as an opportunity to influence the Clans and their new warrior code into something more favorable. That said, the Dark Forest may not end up being any more united about their ultimate goals than the warriors of StarClan are.
β΅ Although with effort they can catch glimpses through the fog, the haze in StarClan makes it difficult for the warrior spirits to keep up with their Descendants and offer guidance. StarClan can send them small dreams and the occasional flutter of a vision, but it would take cats with a uniquely strong connection to StarClan, or discovery of a sacred ground, to speak to them directly as StarClan once did with the Clans. Perhaps if enough Descendants gather in one place and begin to remember stories of their ancestry, it will help strengthen StarClan's connection to the living.
β§ β¬ β΅ β΄ β― βroleplay rules
β§ The usual: follow forum rules, keep the roleplay forum-appropriate, be nice to each other, etc.
β¬ Please keep characters realistic (within typical Warriors parameters) in appearance, abilities, and personality. At the moment, there should be no unnatural type abilities beyond some cats possibly having a slightly better connection to StarClan or the Dark Forest. Appearances follow Warriors rules in that they don't have to be 100% realistic but they should be believable.
β΅ Although I won't impart a literacy limit on this roleplay, please try to keep it somewhat slow-paced and mid-level: decent grammar with enough content to build off of, without writing an entire novel each post. One or two paragraphs per post is suggested, but use your best judgement.
β΄ Similarly, I won't impose any particular activity level, but I would say to at least try to keep the RP going at a steady pace. Ideally, between all members there should be at least one or two posts a day. Please keep roleplay posts on the roleplay page, and chat posts in the planning page (although you may include some OOC text on your roleplay posts).
β― There is currently no limit on the number of characters each player can have, but if a lot of characters end up being sidelined and ignored this could change. StarClan/Dark Forest characters do not have to be active and can be used sparingly, but living characters should consistently remain at least somewhat involved in events. β§ β¬ β΅ β΄ β― βOther Pages

environment
Season Mid Greenleaf
Moon Phase Half Moon
Weather Warm, cloudy, and windy, with light rain in some places. There are dark storm clouds on the horizon, but they look a ways off. β§ β¬ β΅ β΄ β― βterritory
The area where the Clans met their end is much like any other where they lived throughout their history. The area is fairly rural, with wide swathes of forest and meadow interspersed with the occasional twoleg nest and farms, and criss-crossed with thunderpaths. There is a fairly large twolegplace nearby, and some Descendants certainly made their way there to become kittypets or alley cats. Nearer to the forest is the more typical suburban-type twolegplace. The territory is slightly hilly, and a small river runs through part of the area.
The characters will begin widely dispersed throughout the area and may or may not ever find the circle of stones. Where they choose to settle their new Clan(s) will be up to them, and landmarks and borders will be developed as the roleplay goes on.
Landmarks β§ In one part of the forest is a hilltop with a rocky ridge forming a rough circle, the same as in the Descendants' dreams.

Blaze & Poppy Blaze hung back at the corner of the wooden fence as he cautiously scented the air wafting in from the forest. He wrinkled his nose, half due to the scent and half lost in thought as he considered his chances; it had been rainy the last few days, and that meant pretty much all the mice and rats in twolegplace had gone into hiding, the kittypets were staying inside, and there was generally nowhere to easily get food. He wasn't fond of the forest - or more specifically, the cats that lived in it - but his belly rumbled with hunger after days of scraps.
Somewhere behind him he heard his new mate, Poppy, shifting her weight against the loose gravel. The two had not known each other for long, but she was a pretty young thing - gentle and trusting, too. He tilted his head, his expression relaxing as he remembered that she existed. She might help soften his chances of getting chased off, as pitiful and demure as she was. Yeah, that was a card he could play.
"Alright, let's go," he finally meowed back to her, flicking his tail as he trotted out across the grass and towards the edge of the trees. Poppy hopped to her paws and followed obediently, gritting her teeth against the hunger-induced weariness in her paws. She shrank down slightly, her ears flicking every which way as the sounds of the forest surrounded her for the first time, and hurried her pace so that she could press nervously against Blaze's flank. The massive tom was a comforting presence in this unfamiliar new environment, and she forced her anxiety down. Blaze knows the woods, she reassured herself. He'll protect me.
Blaze stopped a few tail-lengths into the trees, once again raising his head to draw in the scents of the forest. Days of drizzling rain had washed away most of the older scents and dampened the new ones, but he could still detect a feast of prey-scent amongst the damp leaves. If only he could find one strong enough to track. Poppy's nose wiggled as she took in all the new scents, and her head popped up as she caught a strong whiff of something unfamiliar, but tasty.
"What's that?" she whispered, swiveling her ears in the direction of the scent.
"Huh?" Blaze replied absently, before realizing what she was talking about and following her gaze. "Oh, that's vole. You've never smelled vole before?" His voice was mostly playful teasing, but there was a note of legitimate derision underneath. He felt a barb of shame that he hadn't caught the trail first, but he pushed it down as he brushed past Poppy and dropped into a crouch, stalking carefully in the direction of the scent. "Quiet," he hissed back to his mate, as though she were a kit who was just now learning to hunt.
Belle & Beast Belle woke up from a peaceful afternoon nap to find her housemate, Beast, pacing near the back door restlessly, illuminated dimly by the light of the cloud-laden sky outside. Being cooped up in the house this long always made the young tom restless, although most days he would be trapped in a drawer or tangled up in the curtains by now. Instead, he sent occasional longing glances through the rain-dappled glass, circling a dizzying path on the sitting room carpet.
"Did you get possessed by the spirit of the ceiling fan or something?" Belle finally called out teasingly after watching Beast turn yet another circle. Thee young brown tabby blinked, momentarily pausing his pacing as he was jerked out of his thoughts.
"Bold words coming from someone who's been a couch cushion all day," Beast shot back huffily, although his tone was lighthearted.
Belle let out a mrrow of laughter, stretching luxuriously before hopping off of the sofa and padding over to stand next to her friend. She followed his gaze out of the glass door, past the neighbor's house and to the dark, swaying branches of the forest beyond. "What's got you so worked up today?" She squinted as she peered across the yard, expecting to see a colorful songbird flitting over the trees or something of the sort, but if there had been she missed it.
Beast shrugged noncommittally, in a way Belle had come to learn meant more 'I don't know what to say about it' than 'I don't know.' Belle frowned sympathetically.
"I had that weird dream again," Beast admitted reluctantly after a moment. He let out a sigh, stretching his paws out in front of him nervously. "It's silly but... I don't know, I almost wonder if it's out there. You know, the hill."
Belle frowned deeper. It seemed silly to her, but then, she'd never been plagued by strange, ghostly dreams. "You want to go traipsing off into the woods to find a random hill that might or might not exist?"
Beast shuffled his paws. "Heh. It sounds silly when you put it like that."
Belle chuckled in response. "Well, I don't know anything about a hill, but maybe getting out of the house would be nice. Especially since the rain has stopped for a little bit." She paused and let out a loud yowl, and a few heartbeats later they were greeted by the heavy footsteps of one of their housefolk making their way down the stairs. Belle let out another loud meow, trotting towards the door. The twoleg made a few noises neither cat could quite understand as she slid open the door and both cats slipped outside, blinking against the warm air.
Sparrow Sparrow grumbled as she opened her eyes. It was the fourth time this moon that she had been woken prematurely by the strange, suffocating dream, and her attitude towards it was beginning to shift from astounded anxiety to plain old annoyance.
Sparrow hadn't really been raised on spiritual matters, and the idea that the dream could mean something wasn't a concept that even occurred to her. As she heaved herself reluctantly to her paws, the back of her mind ran through a list of things that could be worrying her. Or maybe the prey in this area was just bad. Or maybe she had heard a weird story from someone a while ago that she had forgotten about. Or maybe--
She stepped out from the root hollow where she had taken shelter for the night and scented the wind. The air was warm and humid from the recent rain, and she shook her pelt out indignantly at the moisture that collected there. She was grateful that the weather had cooled down a bit, but she would almost prefer the heat to this constant dampness. She didn't bother to groom her disheveled pelt as she stepped out of the makeshift den and stalked quietly out into the woods, ears perked for any sign of danger and mouth slightly open to hopefully catch the scent of prey.

Pineβs green eyes widened as a cold breeze rattled through the bush heβd taken refuge in for the night. A strange dream had woken him, but he tried to ignore it. Strange dreams were scary, and the world was terrifying enough.
He shied away from the breeze, but it wasnβt enough. What warmth heβd managed to gather in sleep was long gone. With a careful sniff for danger, he left the bush and padded forward, prey on the mind.
- - -
Acorn yawned loudly, startling away a bird that had been observing her on a branch overhead. The bough beneath her swayed, but she trusted the automatic shifting of her weight to keep her from falling from the limb.
As she woke, she took a curious glance at the world around her, humming with interest as a she-cat emerged from the hollow of a nearby tree.
(Sparrow? ^)

(oh wait I thought Pine wasn't a Descendant? or is it just like an unrelated weird dream lol)Sparrow Sparrow kept low to the ground, ears flicking around as she listened for anything of interest. Above her, a bit fluttered loudly away, and she cast a quick glance upwards, catching a glimpse of brown fur almost completely hidden against the tree bark. She instinctively dropped lower, ready to stalk what she initially thought to be a squirrel, but pale eyes peering over the bough a heartbeat later alerted her that what she was looking at was actually a cat. It would have been a startlingly large squirrel anyways. Sparrow froze as she noticed the cat notice her, not eager to make any sudden moves that might make the feline assume she was a threat, or induce her to pounce from her higher position. Her tail-tip twitched, but her pelt stayed flat and her ears upright, cautious but not aggressive.

(oop my bad, I thought non-descendants were also having dreams ^^' my mistake! We'll say unrelated!)
Acorn waved her tail at the she-cat below, amused. "Nice weather we're having, huh?" She teased. With a long stretch, she got to her paws and dropped to a lower branch only a few tail lengths above the other cat. She landed a little heavy on purpose, trying to make a spray of raindrops fall on the she-cat below. Then, acting innocent, blinked wide. "Oops! Guess it's not so nice down there after all."

(oh yeah I guess the way the intro is written it's a little ambiguous, the character guidelines section says it more specifically but it could be easy to miss rip. lol Sparrow is having none of Acorn's nonsense sorry. we could probably come up with some ridiculous reason or another to make them interact a little longer) Sparrow Sparrow grimaced slightly, biting back a retort as the unfamiliar she-cat's motion showered her with dew. Sparrow couldn't tell whether it was intentional or not, but either way her carelessness wasn't exactly ingratiating. "It's fine," the brown-and-white she-cat replied levelly instead, her tone flat and unamused. When I'm not being bothered by squirrel-brained fools, she added internally. She inclined her head to the she-cat in a polite dismissal before moving to be on her way, although she kept an eye on the other cat out of the corner of her eye as she did so, just in case.

(Maybe a shared threat will kick things off? A loose dog or a young fox? As they run maybe they could bump into another character?)
Acorn slowly picked her way down, landing gracefully on a short pile of dead leaves below. The satisfying crunch she'd hoped for was dulled by the dampness of the pile. Specks of leaf litter clung to her pelt and she made a face at the sensation.
She pushed the discomfort aside. If she wanted to get anything useful out of this cat, she'd have to keep friendly appearances.
"No need to be shy," She called with a saccharine-sweet, teasing tone. "I'm Acorn, you are?"

(yeah that seems like a good plan. sorry for the late replay, I had like a million things to do today. but I did steal a bunch of cookies from Harvard so that was nice. haha what if it's a dog and they like get stuck in a tree together or something? and then maybe another cat/cats could try to rescue them lol)Sparrow
Sparrow let out an annoyed huff under her breath, looking at the other cat - Acorn, she supposed - more fully, with a curt expression. "Sparrow. I'm passing through," she replied a bit dismissively, assuming she had stumbled upon Acorn's home range or something of the sort. Most of the cats she'd met in her travels were not aggressive, but few were eager to have strangers settling in near their dens, and polite questions about intentions were not uncommon. Before either of the cats could respond again, though, Sparrows ears perked up at the sound of something large pushing through the leaves a few treelengths away. She raised her head to take in the scent, before bristling and leaping back. "Do-" she started to warn the other cat, a flurry of booming barks drowning out the end of her word as the creature seemed to catch the pair's scent. Sparrow scrambled back in a panic as she heard the dog barreling towards them, reflexively pushing Acorn away from the charging beast and back towards the tree.

(( Hi! Excited to start (: anyone can jump in with sage... should I have fox run into sparrow and acorn, or should I save their meeting for later? ))
Fox Fox startled awake in his nest, a breath catching in his throat as he sat upright. He had that dream again... the one with the strange, distant cats and their voices that sent chills down his spine. The dreams were becoming more frequent now, and he noted his sleep might be starting to suffer as he hopped out of the tree hollow that housed his den and saw that the sun had already risen well into the sky. He was usually an early riser, but his dreams kept him in bed this morning. The tom shook out his fur and yawned as he arched his back to stretch, claws digging into the soft earth. Once he shook away his lingering drowsiness, he trotted off into the undergrowth to begin looking for some prey to hunt.
Sage Sage hurried through the open door as soon as her twoleg owner opened it for her, not even looking back to thank him. She purred as she welcomed the feeling of the sun against her fur, hopping onto her fence and turning her face to the sky. She closed her eyes to not look directly in the sun, taking a deep breath of the fresh air. She certainly enjoyed outside better than inside her stuffy twoleg den. The small kittypet glanced around, surveying the neighborhood from atop her perch, wondering if there were any other neighborhood cats out and about. She had only moved in with this twoleg family recently, so she hadn't been outside much to have a chance to meet her neighbors.

(I'll actually reply for real tomorrow on account of I need to go to bed but I feel like Sage might get along with Belle & Beast? it could be fun to have them be neighbors or something. I feel like maybe Fox and Sparrow should meet a little bit later. in the meantime maybe he could meet John? I feel like John would really sympathetic to Fox's lack of sleep lol. hmmm and maybe having Blaze try to come to Acorn and Sparrow's rescue? which could be fun later bc it might endear Sparrow and Acorn to Blaze, and then maybe have Fox and Sparrow sort of eventually end up on different sides of the John/Blaze feud haha)

Seraphina
The rust-colored tabby leapt through the air, her claws coming down upon the bird, which was now dead. Her ears swiveled, eyes darting side to side as she dashed through the tall grass, paws barely touching the ground. Her hind legs powered her forward, sending her flying into the forest's canopy. She stared at the world below, dangerous and unpredictable. It wouldn't be long before she was chased out again, but for now she would enjoy it...to some degree.

Belle & Beast twolegplace
The clouds were clearing up a little as the pair made their way outside, allowing patchy sunlight to shine through. Beast wrinkled his nose as he breathed in the humid air, eyes fixing immediately on the distant treeline in the faint hope that it would be cooler beneath their shaded boughs. He bounded across the yard without a second thought, leaping up onto the wooden fence with one bound. Belle was a bit less graceful as she scrambled up beside him. She scanned the nearby gardens with a bit more scrutiny than afforded to Beast by his singular preoccupation, noticing another housecat perched on a fence a short distance away, seemingly enjoying the sun. Belle had seen the cat through their window or hers a couple times, but hadn't yet had the chance to make an introduction. Beast startled slightly as Belle called out a greeting to the other housecat without a second thought.
"Hiiii!" she purred, skittering a bit precariously along the fence top to bring them a little closer to the stranger. Beast blinked a couple times, casting an anxious glance between the forest, the overcast sky, and the other housecat, before reluctantly following Belle with a little more gracefulness.

John forest
It had been a little while since John had been in this exact part of the woods, and he'd forgotten how pretty it was. The foliage here was dense and lush, and although he tended to prefer the more open skies of farmland he had to admit that thick cover felt isolated and secure. The sun was finally peering through the clouds, making the raindrops that had gathered on the leaves and branches almost seem to glitter like stars.
Although the scent of prey surrounded him, John wasn't particularly interested in hunting. He'd eaten not all that long ago, before he'd left the meadow, and now he was more concerned with reaching wherever he was going, although he wasn't yet quite sure where that was. Maybe twolegplace; it wasn't far from here, and it had been a while since he'd seen any of his kittypet acquaintances. In the meantime, though, he was just enjoying the solitude of the forest.
His ears twitched as he heard what sounded like something larger than a mouse moving nearby, and paused to raise his head and draw in the scent. Cat? His tail-tip flicked warily as he breathed in more, trying to gauge whether this feline, who he couldn't yet see, was someone he already knew and, more importantly, if they might be hostile.
(it is also possible that John and Fox have met before, although they still might not know each other well even in that case)

Acorn Acorn's fur stood on end as the creature came in view, and she nearly stumbled as Sparrow shoved her toward the tree. She didn't need a second thought to scramble up it, taking a great leap to launch herself onto the trunk. A bit of peeling bark fell in chunks from her hind legs, but though she swayed, she caught herself and climbed higher and higher.
She looked for Sparrow only after assuring herself that she was safely up the tree. The dog let out loud pants with drool dripping from it's jaws. Acorn's heart threatened to leap out of her chest.

Aphelyon Belle & Beast twolegplace
"Seems so!" Belle chirped in response, also pausing a respectful distance away and eyeing the cat a little more closely. She felt her eartips grow a little warm as she noticed how pretty the other she-cat was, but she pushed away the thought quickly, especially as Beast pushed past her - nearly knocking her off the fence in the process - to side up to sage, nose twitching as he took in her scent.
"I'm Beast!" the tom replied a bit less sweetly, although his tone was certainly not unfriendly either. He cast another glance towards the forest. "My housemate is Belle," he added almost absently, and the fold-eared she-cat dipped her head slightly in acknowledgement.
"We were just on our way to check out the forest," Belle added a little trepidatiously, following Beast's gaze before looking shyly back at Sage.
(oops I guess Belle is gay. I never decide these things in advance haha)

Sparrow forest
Sparrow had never been much of a climber, and her short claws slipped as she scrambled up the tree trunk after Acorn, eyes wide with terror. She whipped her tail away from the dog's snapping jaws, wrapping it around her flank as she struggled to gain hold on the crumbly tree bark. It wasn't the biggest dog that Sparrow had ever seen - probably about mid-sized, really - but even so its head was nearly a third of the size of Sparrow's entire body. She let out a startled yowl as she slipped slightly, feeling the dog's hot breath on her rump.

Trusting her footing, she let out a piercing yowl and dove toward the dog, slashing the tip of its nose with her claws. It let out a pitiful yelp, and as it stepped back she scrambled back up the trunk. If that wasn't enough to help Sparrow, she wasn't about to get herself eaten trying to help again.

(Mind if I join you?) Pine Pine flinched at the sound of a bird call suddenly cutting short. Someone else was near - too near. He cracked his jaw to take in cat scent, and found to his distress that it was much closer than expected. On quiet paws, he tried to sneak away, but slipped on a damp patch of leaves and couldn't help the distressed sound that escaped him. Seraphina's coat spiked and she pushed back, towards the trunk of the ancient tree. She didn't risk eating the bird, it might attract whatever is out there. Her eyes widened as she tried to glimpse anything beyond the tangled branches, but it no avail did she succeed. Instead Seraphina stayed put, her heart racing and claws sinking deeper into the bark. If I'm lucky...I'll make it. She knew once the...thing...left she could leave.

Sparrow forest The distraction gave Sparrow enough time to find her footing and make her way paw-by-paw up to the closest branch. She perched precariously on the narrow branch, which swayed a bit more than she would like as the dog leaned with its front paws on the tree, but she was thankful for its safety nonetheless. She panted heavily, eyes still wide and pelt bristling as she watched Acorn scurry back to her own haven. As her heartrate started to level out, she cursed herself for such a display of fear in front of a stranger, but she couldn't help but be grateful to the other she-cat for risking herself for Sparrow's sake. She gave Acorn a nod of thanks before turning her gaze back down towards the dog, which brayed and circled around the trunk dangerously. Looking around the nearby forest, most of the branches were far too narrow to leap across the treetops. A more agile cat like Acorn might make it, but Sparrow grimaced as she realized she was trapped, at least until and unless the dog got bored and left.
(I'll have Blaze and Poppy show up in a second, but I'll give Sparrow and Acorn a moment to trauma bond haha)

Was it in the undergrowth, ready to strike? With a deep breath, he finally bolted, hoping that if he was fast enough, whatever it was wouldn't catch him. The flurry of motion made the undergrowth around him sway as he darted past the area he'd heard the call.

Sage Sage's ears perked forward in interest as the tom moved closer and introduced himself and his housemate. "Nice to meet you, Blaze," She a purr rumbled in her throat as smiled at him then angled her head to look past him and meet eyes with Belle with a friendly smile. "and Belle!" Her eyes wandered to the forest when Belle mentioned it and she hesitated, staring into it with interest. She had never ventured into the forest before. Before she moved, when she lived with her other twolegs, there had been a forest near the town but she didn't live right beside it, so she never explored that far. It was enticing though, looking into it now, and she felt her heart skip a beat with excitement as she imagined exploring it with her two new acquaintances. "That sounds fun!" She hopped off her fence, already trotting towards the trees. "I'll go with you!" She paused, looking back to make sure they were there as well.
Fox Fox was in pursuit of prey, following the scent trail of a squirrel, when a new scent hit his nose. He paused in his tracks, lifting his head and parting his jaws to study the scent. It was definitely another cat, but not one he recognized at the moment. He would cross paths with another loner sometimes, but it didn't happen often, and very rarely did he come across someone hostile. Fox would usually be friendly, but not too welcoming. Sometimes they would share a few words or stories over a meal, depending on how social the other wanted to be, but they always went along their own ways afterwards. The ginger tom decided he wouldn't go searching for this cat in his proximity, but if they happened to run into each other he would say a friendly greeting. Hopefully they weren't hostile or territorial - he's lived here for several moons now and wouldn't want to be asked to move away. Shaking his head, he turned his attention back to the scent of the squirrel he was after but he made sure to stay alert for the stranger coming closer.
(( we can say they have run into each other before but don't know each other well, if you'd like! I'm fine either way (: ))

Acorn Acorn found herself back on her original branch, where she'd been resting overnight. I should've just slept longer, she thought irritably. Still, this wasn't the worst place to get trapped. There were plenty of squirrels in the treetops, and branches close enough to neighboring trees that she really could leave at any time... maybe. They were pretty thin, and as bad as a fall would be, a fall into the dog's jaws would be worse. Plus... she wasn't heartless. Sparrow still looked pretty upset. "Well, now we've got plenty of time to get to know each other," she quipped and laid down comfortably on the branch. She groomed her face as she chattered away. "Haven't seen you around before - you traveling through?"

That something was leaving, and leaving fast. A shiver ran through her as she tried to imagine what the thing could be running from. Her jaws parted to sniff the air, scanning for anything that might harm her. Once she was sure that nothing was out of the ordinary, she clumsily slid down the oak, her claws leaving thin, but long cuts in the the sturdy wood.

There were no sounds of being followed, but as he passed, he had caught unmistakable cat-scent. And a fearful cat-scent at that. He considered it briefly - many cats in the area were aggressive about their perceived territory, but it was unusual to find another that would be afraid of him. Flickering curiosity overcame him. And despite the worry and fear, he found himself slinking back to try and catch a glimpse of the stranger who'd been just as spooked of him as he had of her.

The molly's ears swiveled, her hackles rising as she crouched low to the ground and stood over her bird protectively, more like hiding it rather than keeping it safe. Her wide eyes darted around, searching for the source of the cat scent, but to no avail could she locate it. She let out a fearsome hiss, attempting to intimidate the lurking predator.
