I found an explanation for the Jayfeather/Jay's Wing paradox. When Rock returned Jayfeather to his original incarnation, Jay's Wing, Jay's Wing's spirit was reincarnated in the future as Jayfeather took Jay's Wing's place in the past. When Jayfeather returned to the past, Jay's Wing did not return as his spirit was directly reincarnated into Jaykit when Jayfeather took his place as he exited the tunnels. The fact that Half Moon did not see Jay's Wing again in the Tribe of Endless Hunting when he could have been there before Jayfeather's birth confirms this. Unlike Lion's Roar and Dove's Wing, Jay's Wing is still alive because he has never seen death, he will only die when Jayfeather dies. This is why the theory that the Three lost their powers because their original incarnations left their corporeal envelope, like Cinderpelt with Cinderheart, does not hold up. Besides, Jay's Wing's powers have no origin. Jay's Wing got his powers through Jayfeather when the latter took his place in the past and Jay's Wing was reincarnated as Jaykit in the future (proof, Jayfeather no longer has his powers when he is Jay's Wing, if I remember remember) but if Jayfeather has his powers, it's because he is the reincarnation of Jay's Wing: it's a paradox.

I always thought of it as Jayfeather briefly taking control of Jay’s Wind during the decision to leave the lake. Jay’s Wing then dies/gets lost shortly after the group leaves. Jayfeather then intervenes again returning in the form of Jay’s Wing and helping to solidify Half Moon’s leadership as Stone Teller and assisting with the birth of his brother’s incarnation, Lion’s Roar. More of Jay’s Wing having died and then his spirit itself dying or had solidified with Jayfeather as he had died prior to the second intervention.
I always enjoyed the time travel usage within the books and I do wish it had been used more often as many of the Ancient characters were fairly tragic and I would have loved to explore them more.
