I like him in canon but I LOVE THE AU I made for him in my brain!! Infodump incoming~
He's actually the one who killed Ashfur in my AU since he feels he'd been manipulated as his apprentice (the fire scene confirmed his suspicions) and all that resentment he feels influences Birchfall to train in the Dark Forest. Unbeknownst to him, Ashfur, who just recently walked out of StarClan, is laying in wait to take revenge on him, and what better victim to prey on than the father of a kit who's training alongside him? Ashfur makes a deal with Hawkfrost to take over Ivypool and Birchfall's training to get more intel on the Three, and one night, Ashfur's spirit takes over Birchfall's body. He manipulates Ivypool and Dovewing to fight each other for Hawkfrost's benefit, as their damaged bond also weakens the clans.
That's pretty much all I have for now, it seems convoluted, but it has potential!

Has deserved an apprentice for years and I’m still annoyed he hasn’t gotten one.

I like him. He's a bigmouth, kind of like his dad and older brother, but a lot more good natured and mostly well-intentioned. I like seeing and thinking about where he and Spiderleg are both similar and different, both in disposition and in relationships. It kind of feels like he has his own small character arc too, going from >a happy little kid with his littermates >to the the only survivor of his litter and then one of the only two of his parents' children to not die in the span of like three months >takes part in the Great Journey despite being the youngest in his clan >strikes up a friendship with Tallpoppy's kits along the way, which also creates a small bond between Ferncloud and Tallpoppy >is pretty much the only new apprentice when his time comes, but develops a close friendship with Whitepaw >gets used by his mentor Incelfur to entrap his leader without knowing it >Whitepaw deliberately delays her warrior ceremony so they can be be warriors together >makes a friendship with Berrynose, who is a bit of a bad influence and leads to both of them getting in trouble as well as making him more arrogant >buuuut after a slice or two of humble pie, he gets his head on a bit more straight >his friendship with Whitewing deepens into love and they go off and have kids >makes a point to be an attentive, engaged father for Warriors standards (Hey, when you think about it, some people say that some women like men that bear similarities to their own fathers. Think Ivypool's thing for Fernsong might be somewhat influenced by that?) >somehow stumbles into the Dark Forest's paws, finding his daughter Ivypool there and starting training genuinely believing that they're there to help because weeeell he's not the sharpest claw in the den >becomes a bit more aggressive for it, but ultimately still remains a good guy >paternal instincts also flare up when he sees Ivypool getting pressed in the DF and manages to successfully defuse the situation by using his head for once >time in the Dark Forest leads to suspicion falling on him, and his mother's death in the battle ends up costing him his relationship with his previously loving father, who dies months later without the two ever managing to reconcile >his older brother dies not much later, and his two younger siblings also passed away within the same year >>>the guy really lost both of his parents, his older brother, and both of his younger siblings over the course of about a year, leaving him the sole survivor of his immediate family outside of marriage and children >his daughter gets pregnant runs off with some ShadowClan hottie, comes back announcing she's Clanswapping, he and Whitewing are disappointed that she's leaving but are relieved that she's safe >has to watch his other daughter deal with the crushing knowledge that her own daughter is gone forever and that not even death can enable her to see her again >gets a grandkid named after him
He's kind of got a foot in a lot of affairs. Hell, even his random friendship with Tallpoopy's kits ends up relating to the future. One still remembers their friendship, even if he pretends to not care, and the other allies with his daughter in the battle against the Dark Forest. He's got a pretty heavy history for a character that is mostly background and a goofball more often than not.

I like him. Don't really care for his romance with Whitewing though (no shade to her, she's cool). Even though it was cute that she delayed her warrior ceremony so he wouldn't be the only apprentice. Kinda would've loved to see him in a forbidden romance with Applefur in canon instead, to be honest. Or at least become friends with her again, like they became on the Great Journey as kits, while they both trained in the DF as adults.

He's fine for the most part. I think him and Whitewing are cute, but I don't have an opinion on him one way or another.

I really like him, I think that he's pretty underrated, and I agree with Moonblazer that it's time he gets an apprentice until it's too late like Brightheart.

I like him. His relationship with Whitewing was cute. I still don’t get why he trained in the DF though.
