It always rubbed the wrong way that Rock told Jayfeather not to save Flametail when he was drowning. I wonder if he could have actually been saved.

No. He was blind and in dark water. Even if he wasnβt blind heβd still suffer from disorientation. It did rub me the wrong way, though.

Blind, under ice, and pulling the weight of two cats, one of which was practically dead weight by the time Jayfeather got to him... Jayfeather's lucky he even found the hole to get out himself.

Yeah, Jayfeather was lucky to survive. Iβm pretty sure he got hypothermia even after he got back out. Leafpool had to warm him up.

Wasnβt it in canon writing that the weight of Flametail was pulling them both down? Jayfeather tried, but Rock was right - there was nothing he could do, and trying to save Flametail would have only killed them both.
Side note, but I always liked this scene. I mean, itβs tragic, but I feel like it reveals something about Jayfeatherβs character that we almost never see - reckless abandon.

Sadly, no.
Maybe with the help of another cat (not Rock). But not just on his own.
I still don't understand why none of the other ShadowClan cats who were there (basically playing ice hockey with Flametail) tried to save him though. That's sussy. Although they likely got told not to intervene by others as well because it was dangerous/risky to even try, I suppose.

lots of night whispers posting i see
and no, he couldn't... jayfeather was blind, in dark, icy water, and since he is small, the weight of flametail and himself was pulling him down

Jayfeather has plot armor, of course, he could.
Realistically, he couldn't,

I don't think that Rock would have intervened if Jayfeather could have saved him. He's ruthlessly practical, not malicious. The fact that he stepped in is almost certainly enough to indicate that Jayfeather would have died in his attempt... even if we couldn't deduce that ourselves from the scenario.
- Jayfeather is blind - Flametail is not exactly a small guy; his cover image makes him look a little bulky or at least very fluffy - Jayfeather IS small - Jayfeather is a trained medicine cat and probably doesn't bother with any form of strength training; it's shown that he also regularly refuses to bother with even basic combat training and gets his ass clapped on the regular by his own mother whenever she forces them to practice
So we've got a physically unremarkable, arguably even below average guy who can't see, trying to haul a rather hefty young Garfield to safety, not just in water, but through a specific crack in the ice.
Yeah, that sort of stunt succeeding sounds like the opening episode of a particularly annoying power trip fantasy anime to me. Ten to one says they'd have both drowned.

Jayfeather has plot armor, of course, he could. Realistically, he couldn't, don't be mistaken, bristlefrost's plot armor wasn't strong enough

Jayfeather has plot armor, of course, he could. Realistically, he couldn't, don't be mistaken, bristlefrost's plot armor wasn't strong enough That's the unfortunate thing about plot armor; if you're near the end of the story, you're near the end of the plot. Armor can suddenly fail you and the plot will not mind at all; in fact, it might even milk your demise for some tragic chops and a bittersweet finish. ;^}
