Chapter Eleven: Nightgaze stared down at Melodypaw, her eyes glittering in concern. Her sister was asleep now from the poppy seeds, but Nightgaze never did well when seeing her littermates injured. It was her weakest skill as a medicine cat, getting past seeing those she loved be injured. Perhaps the rule that medicine cats shouldn’t have kits was right—she would be far too depressed by even just seeing kits of her own being wounded or ill. She sighed. Nightgaze never wanted a mate anyways, she was fine with just having her kin and Tansypaw, her friend, to bond with.
She padded over to the herb storage, grabbing some comfrey for Forestsnap’s wound. Nightgaze chewed it up into a poultice. She didn’t make much since the wound had already been bandaged, but another trick that Cardinalflight had taught her was to put a bit of poultice over the cobweb too. She applied it lightly over Forestsnap’s bandage.
”Does that hurt?” She asked.
“Not that much,” Forestsnap replied, “Thanks for helping me out. I really appreciate you and Cardinalflight, being a medicine cat must be so hard. You can’t have mates and kits, you have to heal cats, you hold the secrets of StarClan…sometimes you don’t get enough credit.”
”Oh, it’s not that bad. I like serving my clan,” she said. But the truth was that something Forestsnap said bothered Nightgaze. You hold the secrets of StarClan. The words repeated in her head
But I really don’t, Nightgaze thought. She never received much spiritual guiding. At the Moon Tree she didn’t always see StarClan cats when she climbed its roots, and if she did see any, they wouldn’t bring her much information. Cardinalflight was the one who really held StarClan’s secrets. She interpreted signs and prophecies, Nightgaze never did any of that. She saw StarClan cats, but what did they tell her? Not much.
If only StarClan could tell me if Melodypaw is right about our father not being Branchswirl. She thought. She turned around to see Cardinalflight staring outside the medicine den, watching the battle progress. She looked rather upset, so Nightgaze trotted over to her.
”Is there something I could do…?” Nightgaze asked.
”No. You could guard the herb store, but I doubt FrostClan would attack that over territory. I’m just keeping an eye out for any more injured cats coming our way,” Cardinalflight said. But Nightgaze could see that wasn’t what she was doing. Her mentor was thinking, thinking about something that didn’t seem to make her feel very happy. Since Nightgaze’s ceremony at the Moon Tree she just wasn’t the same. Nightgaze was afraid she had gotten ill, but now she didn’t think that was it. As she and her mentor stared at their battling clanmates, blood splattering the camp, Nightgaze wanted to know what was troubling Cardinalflight, so she could fix it.
Nightgaze took a deep breathe. “Are you okay?” She asked, looking up at Cardinalflight. It was as simple as that. Cardinalflight didn’t reply for a moment. Nightgaze shuffled nervously, looking down at her small black paws.
”I’m always okay,” Cardinalflight replied, “It’s just sometimes I know things I wish I didn’t.”
I can relate, Nightgaze reflected. Melodypaw had told her such a huge thing, and she didn’t know if it was true or not. A part of her wanted to wake Melodypaw up, and ask her how she thought of this accusation. But that wasn’t the right thing to do. Melodypaw was injured and overwhelmed, she had to let her rest before she started asking her sister several questions.
But what was bothering Cardinalflight? It must be StarClan, Nightgaze thought, All medicine cats hold secrets of StarClan. She must have gotten a sign that she hasn’t told me about yet.
Nightgaze opened her mouth to say more, but she saw Daisyfoot trotting into the medicine den. Blood was oozing out from her shoulder. She was whining in pain. Both medicine cats sprang up to help their injured clanmate.
”Moss, chervil, daisy leaves, cobweb,” Cardinalflight commanded, rushing to get Daisyfoot to a nest. Nightgaze grabbed the said herbs from the store and placed them down. She started chewing the chervil into a poultice when she heard a yowl coming from the clearing.
”Is the fight over…?” Forestsnap asked. Melodypaw continued to stay sound asleep.
Nightgaze gave the poultice to Cardinalflight and looked outside the den. It was Juniperleap’s yowl they were hearing.
”FrostClan, retreat!” The yowl repeated. Cats fled from PetalClan camp, leaving only the cats of Nightgaze’s clan remaining.
In the center, cats of PetalClan seemed to be backing away from something in the middle of the clearing. What was it? Nightgaze stepped farther away from the den to get a closer look. Her jaw then dropped in horror.
”Cardinalflight! Nightgaze!” Amberbush called in a panic.
In the center of camp was Duststar collapsed on her side, her creme fur stained with blood.

I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve read so far! (All the current chapters out), the characters are very likable and Nightgaze is my favorite so far. I’ve loved the reveals we’ve had and seeing the characters react to them, and I’m excited to see what happens next, especially with Duststar hurt! Your writing gets better with each chapter, and I can tell there’s a lot more to this story and I can’t wait to find out what!
One thing I might suggest is posting all the chapters on the same post (and editing it with a new one every time you write it) and then commenting to let readers know the next chapter is out. This way nobody has to scroll to find them all and they wouldn’t be able to potentially miss a chapter by scrolling past it (like I almost did a few times)
I’d also over to be added to a Ping list for updates if you have one!

Ahh I’m sorry!! I got sick and kinda disappeared for a bit, but I’m back with an update now. Chapter Twelve: Melodypaw stalked a fat mouse, not letting any part of her body other then her paws touch a single blade of grass. She slithered like a snake, her eyes not flickering off her victim for even a second. It was the juiciest mouse she had every seen, big enough to feed at least three cats sharing the meal. Once close enough, she pounced, biting its neck. She then grabbed the lifeless piece of fresh-kill, ready to bring it back to camp.
Melodypaw’s eyes then opened. Why was she lying down? She then glanced down at her paws to see her catch, only to be disappointed. All that was in her paws was thin air, if that counted. Glancing around in confusion, she then remembered where she truly was.
She was in the PetalClan medicine den, wounded. Daisyfoot was now there alongside her and Forestsnap, occupying the last spare nest left for the injured cats. Melodypaw saw that she had a shoulder wound. It still didn’t look completely treated, but no medicine cat was healing it. No medicine cat was in sight at all. Her sister wasn’t there, and neither was Cardinalflight. Mews of concern echoed from the clearing, making Melodypaw’s ears prick up. What was the clan so distressed about?
Have they found out Graywillow’s secret? Melodypaw thought. Her claws dug into the moss coating of the nest she lied in with fury thinking of the information that could change her life forever. Why hadn’t Graywillow told her? Why was she taught to believe Branchswirl, who she had looked up to so much, was her father? Melodypaw knew half-clan relationships were forbidden, but her mother could have at least shared the secret with herself and her littermates. That way we wouldn’t have to grow up in a lie.
“How was your rest?” Forestsnap asked her. Melodypaw ignored him for a second, titling he head side to side in attempt to see what was happening outside the medicine den from the spot she lied in.
“Fine,” she replied, “What’s going on outside this den?”
”Well…” Forestsnap began. His voice was slightly shaky. “Duststar appears to be severely wounded.”
“What!?” Melodypaw exclaimed. Without a thought, Melodypaw pounced up from her nest. She started to take a few steps away from her nest towards the exit of the den, but a shot of pain interrupted the movement. It was her wound, seeming to be reminding her to stay put and let it heal. The poultice helped, but they weren’t magic. Melodypaw’s injuries wouldn’t all heal in just a few moments, it would time. She ignored the pain and kept walking towards the exit of the medicine den.
“What are you doing Melodypaw?” Daisyfoot asked, her voice sharp. Melodypaw didn’t reply, instead she continued to walk outside the medicine den.
Cats were gathered around, forming a circle-like shape. In the middle of that circle was Duststar collapsed on the bare ground, with only Nightgaze and Cardinalflight closely next to her.
”Back up!” Cardinalflight hissed, turning away from Duststar’s injury for a second to look around at the watching cats. “She needs space!” They seemed to obey, repelling away from Duststar’s body causing the circle the several cats once created to disappear. However, everyone’s eyes were still glancing over at the situation, using every chance they got to see how their leader was doing, even if they already just looked in the past few seconds. Melodypaw sprinted towards the two medicine cats and her leader, taking the open way to get through as a great opportunity to help.
”Melodypaw, what are you doing!?” Nightgaze yowled, looking up from her injured leader’s body. Her voice was muffled through herbs in her mouth. Melodypaw was used to hearing this sentence repeated to her, especially from her littermates. It was the same exact thing Daisyfoot had just said. But she never took it personally. The words were usually said when Melodypaw was trying to help, so what did it matter if they didn’t know what she was doing? She was helping them, it was their loss if they didn’t want it.
”Trying to help!” Melodypaw exclaimed, “What can I do in this situation?”
“Go back to the medicine den is what you can do. I already told everyone Duststar needs space, and you’ll worsen your wound running around like that,” Cardinalflight snapped.
Melodypaw sighed. Before leaving, she got a glance at Duststar’s wound. It was a deep slice to the underbelly that was a pretty large wound, more than twice the size of Melodypaw’s. Although she was no medicine cat like her sister, Melodypaw immediately assumed that wasn’t a very nice injury to have. She then trotted away, ears down. It’s their loss, she reminded herself, Cardinalflight didn’t want my help, she doesn’t get it. However, she then brightened up when she saw the cats fighting at the boarder had returned.
“Fogpaw!” Melodypaw shouted. Her brother raced towards her, a look of relief forming in his face.
”Melodypaw! I heard you were badly hurt, are you okay?” Fogpaw asked. Melodypaw smiled. Her brother wasn’t being his usual grumpy self, getting frustrated over the smallest things. Instead, the look on his face showed genuine concern for her, even more concern then he seemed to have before his assessment.
”I think I’ll live,” Melodypaw said sarcastically. Fogpaw laughed. Then, she remembered something.
I have to tell him that his mentor isn’t our father, Melodypaw thought, I’ll tell him when I explain it further to Nightgaze. That way it will make more sense for both of them.
“What happened to Duststar?” Fogpaw asked, his gaze shifting over to their injured leader.
”FrostClan happened,” Melodypaw said. And our father might be the cat who did this to our leader, she added silently to herself. Ping List: 𝕊’𝕞𝕠𝕣𝕖, @angelfire, valleylight(I kinda just assumed that the last two wanted to be on the list, if either of you would like to be taken off tell me)

Chapter Thirteen: ”Fogpaw!” A voice whispered in his ear, “Get up you mouse-brain! Get up!” Fogpaw was exhausted after yesterday’s battle and didn’t want to open his eyes. They felt like stones, far too heavy to be lifted. He awoke for a moment to see Melodypaw, staring at him impatiently. Nightgaze stood behind her, seeming to be looking far more empathetic for Fogpaw than her sister was.
He shut his eyes again. “Melodypaw go away,” he muttered, “I’m not on the dawn patrol.”
”This isn’t about the dawn patrol! Get your lazy pelt up, I’m wounded and slept in the medicine den yet still up earlier them you!” She hissed.
”Keep your voice down or else you’ll wake the whole apprentice den,” Nightgaze whispered to Melodypaw.
Fogpaw opened his eyes once again and lifted his head up. From the looks of outside the den, the sun wasn’t even up yet. What did his littermates want from him so earlier?
“We’ve got something to tell you,” Nightgaze said quietly, staring down at her dark, black paws. Whatever it was, Fogpaw could tell she didn’t know much about what was going on either. Melodypaw knew too much, as she always did.
At least her wounds seem to be healing nicely, Fogpaw thought, glancing at his gray tabby sister. They were pretty serious, and he was worried that Melodypaw would be weakened by the injury. But nothing could stop Melodypaw anyways, she was an unstoppable force full of energy. “What is it?” Fogpaw asked in a soft tone, gazing suspiciously at the two she-cats.
”I woke you up this earlier for a reason, other cats can’t know about this,” Melodypaw whispered, “Come quickly!”
The three littermates quietly scampered away from the apprentice’s den, careful not to awaken any cat sleeping there. Thornbranch stood in the middle of the clearing, doing his guarding duties. Melodypaw halted, causing Fogpaw and Nightgaze who were following her lead to repeat the action. “If we are trying to leave without getting caught, use the dirtplace tunnel,” Fogpaw suggested quietly. Melodypaw nodded and lead her way to the tunnel, which was between the warriors den and medicine den.
It was cramped with all three cats squeezing through the narrow space of bramble thickets trying not to make any sound. Nightgaze tripped over one of Fogpaw’s white paws, and stepped on a twig. He wanted to snap at her for her clumsiness, but knew he couldn’t do that now. Instead, Fogpaw just sent her a nearly silent hiss and kept moving. He looked back to see if Thornbranch had heard the snapping sound, and by the look of his confused face, he must have. However, Thornbranch couldn’t seem to make out where the sound had came from and brushed it off, turning back around. By the time they were back he would be gone anyways, considering dawn would strike soon.
Melodypaw exited the tunnel, followed by Fogpaw and then Nightgaze. She lead the way farther out into PetalClan territory, leaving Fogpaw with plenty of unanswered questions. What could be so important and secretive that they had to leave camp during the very early morning to talk about it? Seems unnecessary, Fogpaw thought, still annoyed that he had been disturbed so early for something he had no idea what it could possibly be.
Once they seemed to be slightly deep into PetalClan’s territory, Melodypaw stopped. She sighed. Despite it being New Leaf, nights and early mornings were still cold. Fogpaw could feel her chilling breath on the front of his light colored gray fur.
“Happen to wonder why you’ve been brought here, Fogpaw?” Melodypaw asked. The crickets chirped behind her, as if they were echoing the question.
“Of course I have,” Fogpaw snapped, “You bring me to the middle of the territory right before sunrise and don’t give me any explanation? I have a reason not to understand why I’m here!”
“I never said you—“
“Enough!” Nightgaze yowled. She then looked down at her paws, seemingly ashamed of yelling at her littermates. “Just get to the point Melodypaw. Tell him what you think.”
“I don’t just think it, I know it’s true, whether I like it or not!”
“Just tell him!”
“Fine,” Melodypaw sighed, “Branchswirl is not our father.”
Fogpaw gave Melodypaw a cold stare. What did she mean? Of course Branchswirl was their father!
“Very funny, but I’m not that mouse-brained,” Fogpaw said, rolling his eyes, “Great StarClan Nightgaze, I didn’t think you would ever follow along with Melodypaw’s tricks.”
“Fogpaw, I don’t think you understand. Melodypaw is convinced that this accusation of her’s is correct, so we should listen to her. I don’t know if the fact is true either, but we should at least give her a chance,” Nightgaze replied.
“I was Branchswirl’s apprentice! I would be the first cat to know he was lying if he was!”
“Well you weren’t, I was. And he is lying!” Melodypaw exclaimed.
“Prove it,” Fogpaw hissed.
“While the battle with FrostClan was going on at camp, I was on my way to the medicine den because of how bad my wound appeared to be,” Melodypaw began, “Graywillow was fighting a FrostClan cat. I couldn’t tell who it was, due to other battling cats blocking the way. I overheard Graywillow talking to the cat. I had been ready to jump to her defense, even if I was injured, until I heard what she was telling the cat. She was hissing at him in agony, saying that he was never their for her and her kits, saying that Branchswirl acted as a better father then he could ever be,” Her eyes flashed with fury as she spoke, clearly upset about what she was reciting, “According to what I heard, we are half FrostClan. No other cat seems to know, they were all to busy fighting. We have been lied to our whole life! Can you believe it?”
Fogpaw stood, not moving an inch. Why? he thought, She can’t really be telling the truth… He knew Melodypaw was right. She had given clear evidence, and by the expressions she was showing her emotions were valid. But Fogpaw didn’t want to believe her. Branchswirl was not only who seemed to be his father, but his mentor. How could such a cat lie to him?
He turned over to Nightgaze. The small black she-cat seemed confused. She looked like the lights in her head were flickering, as if she was still processing what Melodypaw had told them. Fogpaw stared down at his white paws, silent. It didn’t make sense. What FrostClan warrior would Graywillow have fallen for?
After a few moments, Fogpaw finally looked up from the ground. “This isn’t right, we should talk to Graywillow. I want to know if she really did lie.”
“Of course she lied!” Melodypaw said, “Our mother is a traitor to PetalClan! Our birth was a mistake, we are forbidden kits. We should have never been born.”
“Don’t take it all out on Graywillow. It’s not her fault she fell in love,” Nightgaze told her sister.
“What do you know about love?” Fogpaw snapped. He didn’t want to jump in to defend Melodypaw currently, but it was true. Nightgaze was a medicine cat, she couldn’t fall in love. The last thing Fogpaw seemed to need was another forbidden relationship in his kin.
Nightgaze sighed. “You are right, I don’t know anything about love. I just don’t think we should beat Graywillow up about it.”
“She lied to us. Not just a small lie, but told us false information about our own birth. Branchswirl should be blamed just as much,” Melodypaw said.
“Does Branchswirl even know we aren’t his kits?” Fogpaw asked. His sisters went silent. Had Branchswirl just been another victim of Graywillow’s mistakes? Nightgaze was right in Fogpaw’s opinion, they shouldn’t blame Graywillow, but what if she had not only lied to them, but her own mate too? Did she even consider Branchswirl her mate?
“Then that makes Graywillow even more of a foxheart then she already is. Who knew a cat could be so cowardly!” Melodypaw hissed.
“We should head back,” Nightgaze said, changing the subject, “I have to check on Duststar.”
Fogpaw continued the topic. “Yes, how is Duststar?” He asked.
Nightgaze sighed. “I’m not aloud to share that information. Not yet, at least. Cardinalflight and I don’t want to worry the clan.”
“Can you even say what wounds she had?” Fogpaw asked.
“She had several. Specifically one wound to her underbelly was the worst, but she seemed to never stop fighting, causing it to worsen.”
“Why are we talking about this when the fact that we’ve been lied to our whole life ponders around our heads?” Melodypaw snapped.
“You seemed pretty invested in Duststar yesterday after she got her wounds, actually,” Nightgaze pointed out.
“That’s only because I wanted to help!” She exclaimed, “Not to mention that you shunned me away anyways.”
“Let’s just head back to camp,” Fogpaw said, “The sun is rising. I want to just curl up back in my nice warm nest and say this was all just some bad dream, okay?”
“Well, this isn’t a bad dream,” Melodypaw replied, “It’s a nightmare, but in real life. We’ll head back, but neither of you better forget this. This is serious.” Neither sibling replied to their sister’s rage. They just trotted back to camp, leaving Fogpaw in his upsetting thoughts, knowing that Melodypaw was most definitely telling the truth. Ping List: 𝕊’𝕞𝕠𝕣𝕖, @angelfire, valleylight

Post by 🎄ᦓρ꠸ᥴꫀᠻꪖꪀᧁ🎅 on Aug 15, 2023 10:42:16 GMT -5
I swear, I’ve had this chapter half written just sitting for quite a few days now. Today I decided that I had been waiting too long to finish it and cranked out the rest of it. This might be one of my favorite chapters so far, so I hope you enjoy it. Chapter Fourteen: Nightgaze had stayed awake the whole morning after Melodypaw had awoken her. There was know point in going to sleep now. Besides, she had to look after Duststar. Her breathing was shallow. Nightgaze was afraid the wounds would reopen and she’d loose a life.
How many lives does she have left? Nightgaze thought. As a medicine cat, she was capable of seeing how many lives her leader had lost. But how? Every other time Duststar had lost lives when she was alive, Cardinalflight had taken care of it. When Nightgaze had just recently been apprenticed she had lost one to a falling branch during a storm. Only last leaf-bare had she lost another life from greencough. That was a hard leaf-bare, Nightgaze thought. Two of Pollenflutter’s kits, Gingerkit and Darkkit, had lost their lives from greencough also. Several other cats had fallen ill, but she and Cardinalflight helped them recover. Thankfully, now that it was new-leaf everything seemed to be going smoothly. Hollywish’s kits would be coming soon, bringing new warriors to the clan.
But life isn’t going smoothly, not for me at least… Nightgaze thought. She was half FrostClan, meaning the enemy clan’s blood ran through her veins. How would her clanmates react if they knew?
But the worst part of all was that her littermates are going to take it all out on Graywillow. Perhaps Fogpaw wasn’t, but Melodypaw certainly was. She was furious, no longer her cheerful self. To think I called her a delicate daisy… Nightgaze thought. She glanced back at Melodypaw, who was sleeping on one of the spare nests. It was so unlike her to get so upset. Nightgaze understood why it bothers her so much, but what she didn’t understand was how her anger was directed at Graywillow and Branchswirl, not at whoever their father really was. Nightgaze wasn’t angry at all, she was just confused. Graywillow was a caring cat, and she seemed to love Branchswirl. How could she have ever even considered taking a mate in another clan?
Nightgaze approached Duststar and dipped her head down so that it was at her patient’s nose. Cardinalflight was still asleep, but she wanted to find out how many lives Duststar has left on her own. It would prove that she really did have a StarClan connection, enough to be a medicine cat. She touched noses with Duststar, wondering if that would do the trick. Her eyes shut as she waited, waiting for just anything to happen.
But nothing did. She sighed, getting away from her leader. That probably isn’t how you do it, she thought. Nightgaze turned to see that Cardinalflight was moving in her sleep, appearing like she was about to awaken. Several warriors outside the medicine den who weren’t on the dawn patrol were waking up. The dawn patrol had already went out, and they would probably return soon.
“How long have you been up for?” A voice asked. It was Cardinalflight. Nightgaze turned to answer.
“Awhile,” she admitted.
“Medicine cats need sleep too,” Cardinalflight reminded her, “You just healed all those cats at dusk after battle, and now you’re looking after more injured cats? Give yourself a break Nightgaze.” Cardinalflight got up from her nest. She trotted over to Duststar, staring down at her leader’s sleeping body. “How is she?” Cardinalflight asked.
“She seems fine,” Nightgaze replied, “I’m afraid the wounds will reopen though. If they do, they’ll be a pain to close again.”
“Then hopefully they won’t,” Her mentor said, “When Daisyfoot awakens she’ll have to see us. I think she was fine sleeping in the warrior’s den last night, but I just want to be sure. How is Melodypaw?”
“She seems to be recovering well,” Nightgaze replied. Cardinalflight will not be happy if she knows that I was prancing around territory with her last night, She remarked. Nightgaze sighed. Why was life so difficult?
“Go take a break,” Cardinalflight ordered. Nightgaze glanced down, uncertain. “If I need you, I’ll know,” she added.
“Alright,” Nightgaze replied. She walked out of the medicine den into the clearing. Tansypaw approached her from the distance, carrying a plump vole.
“Hello Nightgaze,” she said through the corpse of the vole she was carrying.
“Hey,” Nightgaze said, “Did you catch that?”
“Yep!” Tansypaw replied, “I’m on my way to give it to Cottontail, and then I think I’m going to get myself a piece of prey for myself to eat.”
“It’s a great catch,” Nightgaze commented. It’s so unfair that she’s not a warrior. Sweetfang, Orangewhisper, and Silentstep all got their ceremony, so why not her? she added to herself.
“Thanks, I’ll be back with fresh-kill for us to share.” Tansypaw then went in the direction of the elders den.
Swamptail passed by. Nightgaze unsheathed her claws and dug them into the ground. Why hadn’t the deputy approved of making Tansypaw a warrior yet? She didn’t seem to lack in any skills from what Nightgaze saw. At least I don’t have to live with the fact that he’s my kin, she thought, glancing at the deputy.
Tansypaw then returned, this time with a shrew. “I know it’s your favorite type of prey,” she said, “It’s big enough for both of us. Sweetfang caught it this morning when we were on the dawn patrol. It was on the narrow old bridge and almost crossed to StoneClan territory, but she caught it before it could run any farther.”
Nightgaze knew her friend always respected her littermates, even though they didn’t seem to respect her. They always teased her for not being made a warrior. Nightgaze wished she could help Tansypaw, but she just couldn’t find the right words when trying to defend her. None of Tansypaw’s littermates liked Nightgaze, especially Sweetfang. She had no idea why, but Sweetfang thought she was a piece of crow food.
“Not hungry?” Tansypaw asked. Nightgaze realized she was so busy thinking about Tansypaw’s siblings she hadn’t even taken a bite.
“Oh, sorry. I was just thinking,” she said, taking a mouthful of shrew.
“Is something bothering you?” Tansypaw asked.
Nightgaze swallowed. “Uh…” Yes, but my whole parentage issues weren’t what I was thinking about, she thought. “Well, Sweetfang seems to really hate me. I mean— none of your littermates like me, but she’s really got something against me.”
“Oh,” Tansypaw muttered, “It’s just that she really wanted to be a medicine cat apprentice, but Cardinalflight didn’t choose her. She didn’t have a StarClan connection. We aren’t clan born after all…”
Tansypaw was right. Sweetfang, Silentstep, Orangewhisper, and her weren’t clan born, they were abandoned loner kits that Swamptail had found on PetalClan territory just two moons before Nightgaze and her siblings were born.
“Sweetfang? A medicine cat apprentice? I never knew she wanted to be one,” Nightgaze said.
“Did someone say my name?” A voice hissed. Nightgaze nearly jumped. She turned around to see a calico she-cat behind her.
It was Sweetfang.
“Gossiping about me I see?” She said in an unhappy tone, “Not a very nice thing to do.”
Nightgaze took a deep breath. “It’s not what you think—“
“Disloyal sister,” Sweetfang spat, “Telling your little friend all my secrets.”
Tansypaw stood up. “It’s not that big of a deal. Nightgaze just wanted to know why you seemed, how do about this…” Tansypaw paused, “Negative around her?”
“Mouse-brain!” Sweetfang hissed, “She’s spoiled! She got to be a medicine cat apprentice for no reason! Do you even have visions?”
Nightgaze’s stomach felt like it had dropped. She was insecure about the lack of visions she had. For someone to bring it up in an argument made her queasy.
“Can’t you get over it? I thought you had become happy as a warrior!” Tansypaw said. Nightgaze looked around. Some of her clanmates had came to watch the quarrel.
Then, she saw Sweetfang’s claws slide out of her paws. Fox dung! I can’t fight! She went to pounce on Nightgaze, but suddenly she was slammed to the ground.
On top of pinned down Sweetfang was the pale gray, fury shape of Fogpaw. Ping List: valleylight 𝕊’𝕞𝕠𝕣𝕖

No worries! Also I keep meaning to give my thoughts from Chapter 14! Excited to see Tansypaw here, I’ve been curious about her character for a while! Learning that Swamptail found her and her siblings has me wondering…
Sweetfang seems like an interesting antagonist/rival for Nightgaze. It’s really cool to see a warrior jealous about being passed over for a medicine cat position! And Nightgaze’s uncertainty about her qualification for the position only makes things more intriguing.
I was wondering (if it’s not a spoiler), who named Tansypaw and her littermates? Did Swamptail help name them?

However, Orangewhisper, Sweetfang, and Silentstep’s suffixes were all suggested by Swamptail. I’m excited to let the secrets reveal surrounding the four kits found by the PetalClan deputy, but I can’t get ahead of myself. They will be very relevant to the plot (especially in book two).

Finally got an update in! Chapter Fifteen: Fogpaw breathed heavily on Sweetfang’s fur. His claws were unsheathed, but they weren’t digging into flesh. Not yet, at least.
“What are you doing, mouse-brain!” She hissed, “Get your dirty paws off me!”
“Then stop trying to get your dirty paws on my sister!” He shot back. Sweetfang rolled over without warning, causing Fogpaw to tumble underneath her paws, him now being the pinned one.
“You don’t know that move, Fogkit? The kits fight better than you!” She went to dig her claws into Fogpaw belly, but Fogpaw stopped her, slashing her across the face. Sweetfang scratched his stomach in return. Fogpaw shoved her off him.
“Stop it!” Nightgaze cried, “We don’t need any more wounds in the clan after battle, especially if I’m causing them!”
“Sweetfang, stop!” Tansypaw protested.
“Fogpaw, how about we make a deal?” A voice mewed from behind him. Fogpaw turned to see the large, white shape of Silentstep. Silentstep was the most skilled cat at fighting in the entire clan, and every cat knew it. He was a natural fighter, no cat wanted to pick a fight with him.
“If you’re defending your own sister, I can defend mine.” He hissed. The white cat’s voice was deep, he intimidated Fogpaw already.
“Why don’t you listen to your other sister and stop the fight!” Tansypaw yowled. Nightgaze stood in shock. She seemed even more scared than Fogpaw.
“Er…uhm—“ Before given a chance to answer, Silentstep slashed at his ear and nicked it. Blood dripped down from the wound.
“Keep the nick,” Silentstep said, “It’s a message for you in the future. Don’t pick fights you know you won’t win.” Fogpaw stared down at a singles drop of blood from his ear that sat in the ground. He frowned.
I defended Nightgaze, but lost in the process… He thought sadly.
“STOP IT!” A voice yowled. Fogpaw looked up to see Swamptail, walk furiously towards the four cats involved in the fight. “Do you think Duststar will be thrilled to wake to her clanmates shredding each other?”
“But—“
“No ‘but’s! Sweetfang, apprentice duties for half a moon. Fogpaw, your warrior ceremony will be delayed for a moon.”
“What!?” Fogpaw exclaimed, “You didn’t even ask for Branchswirl’s approval. You can’t just delay my warrior ceremony without my mentor agreeing!”
“I’m the one in charge right now, not your father.”
He’s not my father, and gets approval of Sweetfang’s punishment when your basically her father? He’s bending his own rules in favor of Sweetfang! Fogpaw thought.
“Sweetfang is only getting punished for half a moon though!” Fogpaw protested.
“She didn’t start the fight,” Swamptail said. Fogpaw glanced at Tansypaw and Nightgaze. They both shown guilt in their eyes. Nightgaze mouthed the words I’m sorry.
Fogpaw turned back to Swamptail. “What about Silentstep’s punishment?” He asked, more calmly this time.
“I didn’t do anything besides defend my sister,” Silentstep said.
Fogpaw was now furious. That was all he had done! “But—“
“I said no ‘but’s!”
“Sweetfang tried to attack Nightgaze! I’m the one who didn’t do anything besides defend my sister!”
“I see no claw marks on Nightgaze,” Swamptail said. Fogpaw turned to Nightgaze once again. He was right. His sister wasn’t wounded at all. “Silentstep gets no punishment.”
“Fogpaw should be confined to camp too!” Sweetfang mewed.
“His warrior ceremony being delayed is enough,” Swamptail replied, “Now go. I’ll want to be seeing both of you cleaning Cottontail’s bedding or doing mouse bile some time today.” He then padded off
“Fox-heart,” Sweetfang muttered, going in the direction of the medicine den. Fogpaw followed, gloomily looking down at his paws.
“Wait!” Nightgaze said, prancing towards Fogpaw. She stopped when she was right by his side. “I’m so sorry.”
“It’s not your fault Sweetfang’s a piece of mouse dung,” Fogpaw replied.
“At least Silentstep stopped before he could tear you to shreds,” Nightgaze mewed.
“Where’s Tansypaw?” Fogpaw asked. He wanted to know more about Sweetfang wanting to be a medicine cat. He had overheard Nightgaze and her talking about it before Sweetfang tried to attack his sister.
“She went to go tell Melodypaw what happened,” Nightgaze said, “Apparently she had gone out for a walk through the forest. I think the issues with our parents is getting to her head.”
Fogpaw noticed how Nightgaze hadn’t said what the “issue” was out loud. If any cat in the clan found out, Graywillow could be exiled. Even worse, they could be exiled too. But Duststar wouldn’t do that…
“Oh shoot!” Fogpaw said as they walked in the medicine den, “Melodypaw’s going to kill me! We aren’t going to become warriors together!”
“It’ll be fine,” Nightgaze said, “Now lay down so I can get you some herbs. Your wounds aren’t serious, they just need some poultice so they don’t get infected.” She then went to grab the herbs. Cardinalflight stopped tending to Sweetfang’s minor wounds and whispered something to Nightgaze that Fogpaw couldn’t hear. Cardinalflight kept glancing back at him.
I bet their talking about me, Fogpaw thought.
His attention was then driven to the sleeping body of Duststar. Her belly rose up and down slowly, proving she was still breathing. The wounds looked terrible, small bits of dry blood quivering around where poultice had been smothered. No wonder why Nightgaze is always so busy, she’s responsible for even the leader’s health.
Graywillow then barged into the medicine den. “Oh, my kits! I heard the whole story!” She said. Sweetfang let out a grunt of annoyance, but Graywillow didn’t seem to hear her. Instead, she approached Fogpaw and started licking his wounds furiously.
“Stop it!” Fogpaw hissed, half playfully.
His mother stopped for a moment. “Are you two alright?”
“We are completely fine,” Nightgaze said, dropping a mouth full of herbs in front of the nest Fogpaw lied on. Graywillow the continued to lick Fogpaw, this time going for his injured ear.
“Ow!” Fogpaw wailed, “It’s still sore there!”
“Fogpaw just has some minor scratches and a torn ear. Nightgaze was left unharmed,” Cardinalflight informed Graywillow.
Graywillow stopped licking again. “Where’s Melodypaw?” She asked, “I visited her last dusk fall. She didn’t seem happy to see me.” Fogpaw frowned. Graywillow was so caring, he had nearly forgotten she had been in a half-clan relationship. Melodypaw was going to be salty, and she seemed to hate their mother at the moment.
And Graywillow has no idea that Melodypaw is mad at her because she overheard her mother’s biggest secret, Fogpaw thought. Ping List: 𝕊’𝕞𝕠𝕣𝕖 @swaggycassie valleylight

Chapter Sixteen: Melodypaw trotted across PetalClan territory, on her way to the FrostClan border. She needed time to think about what her mother did. That her existence was forbidden.
Truthfully she didn’t need time to think about anything, since all she could think about was the fact she was half-clan, but she needed time alone. Time to process it.
She stopped when she reached the juniper bushes. Melodypaw glared at FrostClan’s territory. Her own father lived there, and she had no idea who he could be.
What did I do to deserve this? She hissed to herself in her head. She always thought of herself as a good cat, but now she wasn’t sure. The reveal of her birth had brought out some sort of anger in her, an anger she didn’t know existed. An anger that made her want to strangle the FrostClan cats to death.
I have to find out who my father is, Melodypaw thought. Without thinking, she lifted her paw to trespass onto FrostClan territory.
“Melodypaw, there you are!” The voice of Tansypaw shouted, “I’ve been looking for you.”
Melodypaw shoved her paw right back next to her other ones and turned to talk to Tansypaw. “What’s happened? Why do you seem so urgent?”
The smile wiped right off the calico she-cat’s face.
Melodypaw frowned. “Tansypaw…what happened?”
“Nightgaze got into an argument with Sweetfang,” Tansypaw began, “It came to the point where Fogpaw thought he had to jump in and attack Sweetfang to save her, so she wouldn’t have to fight.”
Melodypaw stood cold. She knew where this was going. “Fogpaw attacked Sweetfang and got punished…” She prayed to StarClan the punishment wasn’t what she thought it was.
Tansypaw nodded. “His warrior ceremony is being delayed for a moon.”
Melodypaw unsheathed her claws in fury. Why? Now she’d have to be made a warrior alone, alone without her brother. It may not seem like a big deal, but it was for her. The three littermates always stayed together. It was hard enough that Nightgaze couldn’t get her full name with Fogpaw and Melodypaw, but now Melodypaw had to get her’s alone? Alone with no one to comfort her over the fact that she had almost gone through her life being made a full warrior and not knowing she’s a half-clan kit? It’s like I’m blinded by the world for knowing to much.
“Hey, it’s okay…” Tansypaw murmured.
“It’s not okay!” Melodypaw hissed, “That stupid tom got not only himself punished, but me punished too! We are supposed to stay together!” Her voice has started to break in between words. It was only then we she began to be conscious of the slight pain lingering from her wound.
“Don’t blame Fogpaw,” Tansypaw said, her voice in an almost comforting tone, “He was only protecting Nightgaze. You would have done the same if you were there. It’s Swamptail to blame, he punished your brother.”
“Shouldn’t you be defending Swamptail?” Melodypaw snapped, “Isn’t he the reason you are alive? He found you when you were starving to death in the forest as a kit with no mother. Not to mention he’s also your mentor.”
Tansypaw sighed. “Yes, my mentor. My mentor who has kept me an apprentice nearly three moons longer than he should have. He’s claimed I’ve failed my assessment four times. How do you think it feels, to know the closest cat you have to a parent considers you a failure?” There was no anger in the she-cat’s voice, only sadness.
Melodypaw never thought of it that way. Sure, she knew Swamptail sometimes treated Tansypaw like mouse dung, but it never occurred to her that Swamptail was really Tansypaw’s only kin besides her littermates. Her littermates didn’t act as her friends either.
Then Melodypaw remembered her own situation. Better to have no parents then one who you don’t even know the name of and the other letting you grow up on a pathway of lies, she thought bitterly.
“Let’s go back to camp,” Tansypaw said.
The two didn’t talk on the way back to PetalClan. When they arrived, Melodypaw ran to the medicine den where her littermates were. She was stopped by Graywillow, who seemed delighted to see her.
“Melodypaw, I’ve been wondering where you were!” She exclaimed. Melodypaw didn’t reply, ignoring her completely as she passed by to enter the medicine den.
Fogpaw sat on a nest. He didn’t look badly wounded besides a torn ear and a few scratches on his belly and side. He could probably be excused from the den now, but Melodypaw guessed he was waiting for her. Sweetfang was no where to be seen. Nightgaze sat beside him, her eyes staring directly at Melodypaw. But Melodypaw wasn’t looking at her, she was looking at Fogpaw.
“I’m sorry—“ but she wouldn’t let her brother finish his sentence.
“You stupid tom!” Melodypaw hissed, “Were you even thinking of me!? There was so many other things you could have done to stop the fox-heart from beating up Nightgaze, but instead you try to use your claws? Now I have to sit alone, do my vigil alone! Be made a warrior alone! What happened to sticking together?” Before she knew it, tears dampened Melodypaw’s fur on her face. She started to make that terrible gasping sound she did when she got upset.
Fogpaw didn’t say anything. He just stood up and wrapped his head around her’s, nuzzling Melodypaw.
“I promise everything will be fixed,” Fogpaw whispered in her ear so only she could hear, “Our parents, our ceremony, everything.” 𝕊’𝕞𝕠𝕣𝕖 @swaggycassie valleylight
