While typing up a post for another thread, I just realized something that bugs me: have we really had Darkstripe die TWICE while Firestar feels bad for him both times?
Come on, really. DARKSTRIPE. It's not even like a Tigerstar situation, where you could feel bad that such a clearly gifted, clever, and charismatic individual threw his talents away on a selfish pursuit of power and evil. We're talking about a total loser and simp who isn't strong (understatement, he had to get bailed out against a half-starved and clearly abused prisoner) and is clearly just a hair or two away from stupid, on top of being nasty, cowardly, and overall unpleasant. How is it that Firestar had it in him to feel bad for this walking piece of shit TWICE?

Putting myself in Firestar's shoes, i think i would feel bad too. Clearly something happened with Darkstripe that convinced him to follow Tigerstar's footsteps no matter how wrong his actions were, not to mention how much xenophobia he was fed by the latter. He was always loyal to ThunderClan until it was "led by a kittypet": the poor dude probably started idolizing Tigerclaw when he was a kitten. Remember, Darkstripe's mentor was Tigerstar and his apprentice was Longtail, and he spat the same things to Rusty when he came to join.
Of course, this is straying into headcanon territory (none of this is confirmed to be true) but his character, atleast to me, looks very tragic. Clearly he was fed such beliefs by a cat, who in his kithood, had been abandoned by his father to become a kittypet (the most shameful act one could commit as a warrior when he was young).

I feel like it might've had to do with Firestar moreso lamenting the fact that Darkstripe still chose to follow Tigerstar after everything he'd done instead of seperating himself from him like Longtail and Dustpelt did.
Not sure if Firestar had a full on saviour complex but he's most certainly always been someone who wanted to help others. So perhaps this extended to a hopeless case like Darkstripe to a certain point as well, for some reason. He could've sort of been waiting/hoping for Darkstripe to redeem himself/see the error of his ways or something like that, however foolish or naive that notion one could interpret it to be in the end.
There was a moment in the battle against BloodClan at the end of TDH where Firestar was attacked by a random BloodClan (she- iirc) cat and Darkstripe dragged that cat off of him. For a brief moment, Firestar thought that he had changed his mind and had found his loyalty for ThunderClan again despite everything he had done. So I feel like in that case (Darkstripe's first death), it was Firestar's sort of "crushed hope" at seeing Darkstripe be a traitorous foxheart till the very end (who had even technically betrayed the cat he was so loyal to in the first place) by continuing to fight on the wrong side, this time the side being that of Tigerstar's murderer, Scourge. Even though it was only so he would've had a chance at killing Firestar himself (whom he blamed for Tigerstar's demise).
As for Firestar feeling bad at Darkstripe's final death in ALitM, that was most likely just an extention of this. He could've still had a lingering regret for how Darkstripe choose to live his life (and afterlife) even though it was rather useless to do so. Didn't stop him from yeeting that pathetic cat out of existence once and for all though.

Darkstripe's loyalty to Tigerstar makes him a pitiable figure. He was so dedicated to the cause that he helped Firestar just so he could have a chance to try and kill him himself in Tigerstar's name, and even after Tigerstar got double killed, he was still obsessed with him. He was devoted, if nothing else
