Snowclan, Rainclan, Cloudclan, and Sunclan have always been at war. Though their clan leaders and deputies and queens have changed, they’ve always fought over the small spit of land between all of their territories. Now, though, Snowclan and Rainclan have united, and it may mean the end of the war for Sunclan. Dovekit is a young kit in Sunclan when she receives a prophecy from starclan- a warning of an attack to come. Dovepaw, a medicine cat apprentice in Snowclan, is eager to receive his name, and stopping a war seems like the best way to do it. Dovekit has always wanted to be a medicine cat in Rainclan, but a strange warning from her medicine cat makes her question her path. And in Cloudclan, Dovepaw learns something that shakes his trust in the war- and makes him wonder how much his leader has left unsaid. War is coming in the clans, and four dove named cats may have what it takes to change the tide- or end it all.
(Yes, all the main characters are Dove-something. This might get a bit long. I'll post the alleigiences when I find them again. They're in a random notebook somewhere.)

Prologue- The camp would not survive the next attack. Berryleaf padded forward silently, hoping not to make a sound. It’d been two days since the siege had started, since despair had wormed its way into Snowclan camp. Now, two many cats were injured to go on patrol. Too many herbs had been ripped apart by claws to heal the injured. Too many holes had been shredded into the bramble wall to keep the next wave out. That they had survived the last one was only from luck. No clan had ever been driven from their territory before, but Berryleaf could see it happening now. With her as deputy, the clan would fail. They’d be no better than rogues, without code or land to keep them together. Beside her, Harvestpaw met her own worried stare. Her apprentice was small, much smaller than the Cloudclan warriors who had attacked. But she’d held her own in the camp, keeping warriors twice her size out of the nursery and elders' den. Now, a poultice of chervil and tansy held together a gash in her side. Her brother, Snailpaw, had not been so lucky. He lay now in the far corner of the leader’s den, where all the injured had been placed once the other dens were full, wracked with fever. “Take your mouse to the injured.” Berryleaf said, “They’ll need it more than us.” Harvestpaw let out a sigh as she walked towards the medicine cat den. Berryleaf couldn’t blame her for it. After all, Harvestpaw would need all her strength to keep back Cloudclan. They all would. “She should get her warrior name for this.” Rootwhisker muttered. The senior warrior had once glared at her for being made deputy before him. Now, he patted forward, bloodied tail hanging in the dirt. “She’s only eight moons old,” Berryleaf responded. She sat down in the dirt, staring at the damage for a second. “Where’s Ebonystar?” “Sleeping,” Rootwhisker said. “I ordered him to.” “I didn’t know you could order a leader.” “Well, someone has to. Cloudclan could attack again at any moment. And Ebonystar hasn’t slept in three days. He’s lost two lives. We need everyone at their very best if we’re to keep them at bay.” If they even could keep them away. Berryleaf glanced around the camp at the small crowd of warriors still on their feet. None of them had escaped without a scratch. Silverbelly, blue eyes wide, was helping their medicine cat Tallsight to heal any smaller wounds. The gray shecat had spent a few moons healing with Tallsight, back when her eye had been ripped out in a fight with a Rainclan patrol. She’d learned most of the herbs during that time. “When this is over,” Berrystar heard Tallsight say. “I’m getting an apprentice.” Berryleaf sighed. Her pelt needed grooming- something they’d once been able to do with the small hot springs on their territory. But now it was much too dangerous to leave the walls of camp, much less going for a jaunt in the woods. “Maybe I should start a hunting patrol,” She mused to Rootwhisker. “Harvestpaw found that mouse hiding among the torn brambles. There has to be a bit more just outside of camp.” “I’ll go with you,” Rootwhisker said, automatically. “No you won’t!” Tallsight shouted from across the camp. “First of all, your tail’s dragging enough to scare away any prey nearby. You’ll get infected if you try hunting.” “Fine then.” Berryleaf answered. “Who here is ready to go?” “On a regular day, I’d say no one. But we don’t have that luxury, so I’ll say Spiderheart, Chevrilfoot, Hollyheart, and Greeneye.” The named cats glanced up from where they sat. Any other day, Berryleaf would’ve given them tick duty for eavesdropping like fresh apprentices, but she was much too tired to care today. They got to their feet, taking a random hole in the brambles instead of the actual bramble entrance. “If you smell anything strange, report it!” Berryleaf shouted after them. She didn’t think it was something any of them needed to be reminded of. “Is Ebonystar in his den?” Berryleaf asked Tallsight, once they were gone. “I need to speak with him.” “He’s in the medicine cat den, applying poultices.” Berryleaf had forgotten for a second that Ebonystar had once been Ebonyheart- and that he’d been a medicine cat before he’d been forced to become a warrior. “Not sleeping.” Rootwhisker muttered as she went over. Berryleaf pushed away a hanging vine in front of the medicine den. It was made beneath the cleft of a boulder, which had been widened by digging, long ago. A large crack in the boulder let in natural light, enough that Berryleaf could see the black pelt of Ebonystar as he mixed a paste of poppyseed and comfrey. “Halfpaw can’t eat poppyseed.” Ebonystar explained. Berryleaf could smell the exhaustion coming off of him as he walked into a pool of light. “Do you remember what I said to you, when I made you my deputy?” It has been many moons before, so long ago that Berryleaf’s muzzle had gone gray and her eyes could no longer see perfectly in the dark. But Ebonystar, with his nine lives, had always stayed young, not a fur of gray on him. She remembered plenty of things about that day. Comfreystar, the old leader of Snowclan, had been young when he’d died, only a few moons into his leadership. Berryleaf had been a great warrior back then- she’d been happy to lead Snowclan into battle, as Comfreystar always, always made them do. To him, and to her, winning the war had been all that mattered. Her own apprentice, Hollypaw, had been four moons old when she’d earned her ‘paw name. Comfreystar had lost his last life in an ill fated skirmish with Sunclan, throat ripped open in a fight with Snakestar. And when the heat of the fight was over, his deputy, Blazethroat, had also been found dead, his neck caught in a hidden fox trap. That was when the clan had had time to think things through, to decide that Ebonyheart, the peaceful medicine cat, who had chosen to become a warrior when famine had gripped the clans, would be the best choice for leader. Berryleaf had not believed it was a good choice then. Now, she could not imagine how Snowclan would’ve survived without it. She’d been shocked when Ebonystar had made her his deputy. “Of course I do,” She said. “You told me that you thought I would make a fine deputy, not because I would agree with your every decision, but because you knew I was loyal.” “Loyal to a fault,” Ebonystar answered. “I was Comfreystar’s medicine cat, back when he was Comfreyfoot. He gave me one of my nine lives, for strength, to do what I had to do for my clan. I always thought it was an annoying speech- I was older then him, and hadn’t I already given up my life for my clan? But I never understood that Comfreystar had given up more than that. He’d given up nine lives, and any shred of a reputation he’d had. I’d never noticed that there’d never been an empty freshkill pile, a border not strongly marked, a bedding not fresh when he was leader, until he was dead.” “It was hard work, in the early days.” Berryleaf responded. “But we did well with what we had.” “I thought so,” Ebonystar whispered. “I’m on my last life, Berryleaf.” Someone shouted from the camp. “Ebonystar, Cloudclan is coming!” Ebonystar gave Berrylead one last, sorrowful glance, before he headed out of the medicine cat den. So this was the end. She followed after him, a cold feeling in her throat. If Comfreystar was still alive, he’d give a rousing speech. But as she walked into the camp, she realized Snowclan didn’t need one. Rootwhisker, Mistclaw, Hollyheart, Spiderheart, Softpelt, Mosspaw, and Lightheart stood up, unsheathing their claws. Their eyes were filled with determination as they stared into the woods ahead. Harvestpaw darted out from the leader’s den, Snailpaw hard at her heels. Even with a gash from ear to shoulder, he still unsheathed his claws to fight in front of the elder’s den. From the woods, a tall black and white shecat emerged. Her pelt was covered in dirt, grime, and blood. Berryleaf was proud to know that one of those scratches came from her, though it would not save them today. “Quickstar,” She heard Ebonystar purr. “I see you’ve brought your best.” “I certainly don’t want to waste your time,” Quickstar answered. Mallowpool, a dark gray tabby shecat, emerged from the shredded brambles beside her. “Then let’s get this over with.” Ebonystar pushed his way to the front, standing nose to nose with the Rainclan leader. From above, dark clouds warned of rain as he shouted, “Snowclan, attack!” Berryleaf had barely enough time to unsheathe her claws before Eaglecaw leaped at her, a flash of yellow and long claws. He dashed his claws down her cheek before she could block. She bit him on the shoulder, but he was already tearing into her back with a well placed hit. She fell backward, into a pile of shredded brambles. One of her paws tangled in the thorns, ripping out a claw. He went for the killing blow, claws ripping into her neck. But as Berryleaf braced herself for the pain, a huge ginger and white tom dove into Eaglecaw, sending him backwards. Berryleaf turned in confusion. She’d seen the warrior at the gatherings more than a few times, but he was from Cloudclan- “Nectartail.” He said, as he ripped one of Eaglecaw’s ears apart. “New warrior.” She’d admit, she hadn’t been paying attention to the gatherings in a long time. She could hardly remember yowling Nectartail’s name. Not that it was much of a name, anyways. A silver tabby approached them, claws unsheathed. That one Berryleaf recognized as Willownose, a pretty, blue-eyed warrior who could fight like a lion. She offered them a smile before she attacked. Nectartail turned to hit her shoulder, and she twisted sideways, raking her claws down his back. Fur caught between her claws as she tore it out. Berryleaf hit from behind, just quick enough to cut a gash in Willownose’s thigh. Then the warrior twisted sideways, ripping Berryleaf’s nose open. It was a pain Berryleaf could handle on her own. But her other injuries were too bad for her to ignore. She gave Nectartail a panicked look, hoping he understood. “Guard the elder’s den.” Nectartail hissed, “I’ll deal with Willlownose.”
