Just an idea tho. He could get the clan's attention and possibly their trust. He doesnt even think about the croc attack much he just wants to seem sad about it so he gets pitied by others

with that info, my own Stormsurf HC is he loved painting so he wanted to become an art therapist, but got burnt out after getting his bachelors bc his passion wasn’t as fun when it was turned into a job. so now he’s in some generic job to pay off the loans and no motivation to get his masters
