Inspired by the Alderheart thread, do you think Rootspring (or some other cat) should've been the one to sacrifice himself instead of Bristlefrost?

Nope. I think Bristlefrost was the right one to go. She was an assistant to him at the start when she was unaware of his nature and then became his demise

Nope! Would have been more than happy with Mr. I keep surviving miraculous encounters that would have killed anyone else by now Aka Shadowsight. (Just the amount of near-death and technical death experiences in one series and yet he still doesn’t die?) Infuriating.
I’m pleased it was Bristlefrost since it shows they’re not afraid to off the only TC protagonist and fingers crossed her fellow ThunderClan pov dies in ASC, as well.

Honestly, the amount of trauma and survivor's guilt Shadowsight has makes his storyline more interesting to continue over Bristlefrost

Bristlefrost actually makes some sense. She was manipulated and groomed by him into being his lackey, and she had a personal reason to end him. That said, I feel it would have been better if Bramblestar and/or Squirrelflight did it instead, as they have a longer history with Ashfur and he has it out for them.
tl;dr would have it rather be Bramble or Squirrel, but I'm fine with Bristle.

To add, Bristlefrost sacrificing herself also ties into her character from the first book about being a great warrior and making a legacy for herself. Self sacrifice fits a lot more into her character than either Shadowsight or Rootspring

Bristlefrost doing it also has a sense of foreshadowing to it because she did dive recklessly into water in the first book to save Rootspring. Now she's doing it again with Ashfur, only this time she knows she won't come back up. This coming full circle doesn't work quite so well with Rootspring.

Honestly, the way Bristlefrost died is probably one of the better pieces of writing and plot in this series

I think it would have been nice if Squirrelflight or Bramblestar had been one of the ones to do it...but Bristlefrost ending him is alright. I just wish she didn't have to sacrifice her entire existence for it. Well written, though.

Is it bad that I wanted it to be Hollyleaf all along instead of any other option? Seriously though, she really should have shown up in TBC but was only ever mentioned a few times in relation to Ashfur's death and then by him in the TPoNS prologue. Her killing him a second time and thus yeeting him out of existence for good would have been fantastic, in my opinion. It could have brought the PoT situation and their fake little "friendship" in SqH as StarClan spirits full circle by turning Hollyleaf into Ashfur's ultimate nemesis that finally brought him down for good.

Shadowsight should have done it. 100%. Now we have a sad Rootspring and Shadowsight who will probably be shoved into the background. At least if we had Rootspring and Bristlefrost alive, we could have had some drama with them getting together due to the code. Instead, we have random couples getting together.

No, but with some parts of the story tweaked. Bramble and Squirrel should have also had a hand (or paw) in killing him and I wish that her entire existence hadn't been completely wiped out.

I think Bristlefrost was the right one for this, but I will never get over the fact that Rootspring didn't really even try to save her. I think ultimately she still should've died, but Rootspring should've jumped into the water to try and save her (after all, he managed to pull himself out before). Rootspring jumping in to try and save Bristlefrost would've brought things full circle after book one when Bristlefrost saved Rootspring from the frozen lake.
