I've been thinking about starting a roleplay using the four elements trope where each of the elements has a respective kingdom and guardian who is responsible for keeping the source of magic safe. I was thinking that the kingdoms wouldn't exactly be at war, but more just on edge and hostile towards one another. It'd be casual because I know that people have lives and can't be on all the time. If you'd like to help out or join please tell me!
Just a little more about the universe:
- the time period isn't exactly medivial, it kind of is though I guess, but it's not modern (if any of you play Genshin Impact that's basically the stuff I'm thinking of) - Guardians train apprentice's to take over for them when they die or retire - Guardians aren't in the royal families, but act as advisors to them (medicine cats kinda) - the four elements are Air, Fire, Earth, and Water, so... basic. I could give them different names though so please hand me some suggestions
If you have any other questions feel free to tell me

Would this be a little like avatar the last airbender? Just trying to get an idea here? Also has there been any mixing between the kingdoms? I assume it might be forbidden but that could result in a mix of magics.

Kinda like ATLA in premise but pretty different in terms of culture and everything. There wouldn't be much mixing between kingdoms but it's not forbidden. No one can have more than one element though. I have a lot of lore written out but I'm not just gonna full on post it here lol

This seems like a fun idea and the premise is interesting.
What are the sources of magic like? Would they be physical objects or maybe like the power source the Atlantians use from Disney's Atlantis? Also, any idea for why tensions may be high between the kingdoms?

I was thinking of large gemstones. Like- Water would have a giant pearl. I was also at first thinking of making something like visions from Genshin Impact where each person carries their power source but if I wanted to do that I would start a Genshin Impact roleplay lmao.
In terms of tensions, I was thinking like... one of the kingdoms trying to assert themselves as more powerful OR the kingdoms recovering from a large crisis and trying to get everything back together, but some kingdoms just don't want help

Large gemstones being the powe source is a cool idea. I've never played the game, but at that point you might as well make a Genshin Impact rp.
For the first idea, perhaps whichever kingdom was trying to assert power did so a decade or two ago, so it's still fresh in the other kingdom's minds. For the second idea, maybe a series of natural disasters hit the kingdoms, particularly one or two harder than the others. All the kingdoms are recovering and unwilling to help each other. Or perhaps there's unrest/recent events that have made the leaders of each respective nation uneasy and distrusting of each other. Or maybe something has threatened their power sources and now they all blame each other.

I'd make a Genshin rp if the game actually had a clear ending but that's nowhere in sight lol XD
Honestly, I really like that idea. I was thinking that early on one of the Guardians would die leaving their apprentice, who is still young, to take over for them.

Haha oh no. Unclear endings aren't always fun.
Wait, which idea do you like specifically? Also, that's always a fun start. Dead guardian and the poor, young apprentice (who may or may not be undertrained) forced to take over.
Speaking of, any ideas for the general plot?

Genshin is only 3 regions into its 7 region world so :')
I think maybe the fire-representing kingdom that I'm calling Majelist would have made threats a few decades ago. They have new rulers now but I'm thinking that the princess/prince would be supportive of more power.
The general plot would revolve around the Guardians, Royal Families, and nobility, with some lower-class people too

Oh boy. That is definitely unclear. I hope those four other regions get revealed/unlocked/whatever you call it soon.
Firstly, like the kingdom name, secondly, I like that idea. So the current leader/leader to be wants to gain more power for whatever reason.
Sounds fun!
Do you have ideas, names, basic cultures, etc. for the kingdoms yet? Do the guardians have tensions between them, or are they sort of separated from the tensions of their kingdoms and ha a good relationship with each other? Also, would everyone have the ability to control an element, or is it only some people like in AtLA?
Sorry for all the questions, I know I'm asking a lot.

The region for the element Dendro is probably coming soon :')
I don't have many ideas for the cultures yet but I do have the names of the kingdoms
Fire: Majelist Earth: Sonmure Water: Azurial Air: Zephyrus
I was thinking of giving the elements different names. I also have sub-elements written down. I can definitely come up with cultures but if you have any ideas just tell me!
I don't mind questions lol

Yay at least that's something!
I love world building so I do have a bunch of random ideas floating around. I also like all the kingdom names, very cool. As for the powers, it would basically be something like water as the main element with ice as a subelement then?

Me too lol. I've always loved writing lore for stories and stuff like that. That's basically how the elements work too yeah! There would be people who only use ice despite being able to use water since it's their element and the same thing with other elements with their different sub-elements! I'd love to hear any ideas you have

For cultureaybe the fire kingdom is more interested in industrial advancements
Earth or Air could be more about agricultural?

World building is always a fun thing to do.
Okay, that's really cool. It makes sense that some/most people may want to focus training with their subelement more as opposed to the main element, especially I'd
I like the idea of Majelist being industrial based. A thirst for progression and innovation could fit with the heir wanting more power too.
I have no idea if you planned for each nation to be a traditional monarchy where each kingdom is ruled by the oldest child of the previous ruler, but I have some other ideas. - The kingdom is divided into smaller territories, each one being ruled by another individual kind of like states. The leaders of the smaller territories help make decisions and can give their own input into a situation, but the main ruler has the final say. - The next monarch is chosen by the guardian or religious leaders when the time comes. - The children (and maybe even nieces and nephews) of the ruler have to go through a series of tests/trials in order to inherit the crown. Maybe certian individuals could also take part or challenge the monarch for the throne. - A mix of nobles, religious leaders, and average joes are voted upon and form a council that help the monarch make decisions.
Water - Series of islands (so like an archipelago I guess) with the largest island being the capital - Uses sea trade and has a strong navy - Exports dyes from sea snails, mollusks, tropical flowers, etc. and has a thriving seafood market - Diet is mostly seafood and farming of tropical plants - Underwater cities?
Earth - They use the land, both underground and above ground - Extensive mining, so they export a ton of minerals, metals, and gemstones - Wear a lot of gemstones and precious metals due to mining - Underground cities? - As Ember suggested, maybe they're strongly into agriculture
Air (Don't have a lot of ideas for them, sorry) - Live high up in the mountains, perhaps a bit more isolationist - Floating cities?
Fire - As suggested, they could be more interested in I dustrialization and therefore trade new technology? - Maybe they strive for perfection? - Live in a desert/grassland/dry shrub land

I'm doing traditional monarchy, yes. I do have places where they lived planned out and they're quite similar to what you said lol. I like the idea of Majelist being more industrial as I imagine they have the strongest military. I have some characters planned out, I have the Water Guardian and the Crown Princess of Majelist but no one else is really important lmao. The kingdoms would have smaller regions that are ruled over by nobles probably

Oh cool! Probably should've asked about the kingdoms before I posted similar ideas, but oh well. Makes sense that there would be nobles who rule over smaller regions, though.
I have some character ideas, but nothing really planned.
Anyway, what would the other gemstone sources be for the other nations? Also, how does someone become a guardian?

I would imagine that they're chosen after getting visions when they're around 12-14 years old and start their training immediately.
For gemstones:
Earth: Emerald Fire: Ruby Water: Pearl Air: Amethyst or Sapphire
Kinda basic but whatever. I would imagine them being embedded into something. Like the emerald being embedded in a tree or something like that. The pearl being located in the center of a ring of water.

Okay, good to know.
I think the gemstones work, even if it seems a bit basic, though I like the thought of each of them being encased/surrounded by the main element.
Also, what did you have in mind for each kingdom in terms of like environment, military stuff, and all that? You mentioned you had similar ideas to what I posted.

Pretty basic ideas but it was:
Azurial: beaches and islands. The castle where the royal family lives is located on a mountain overlooking the beach. The Guardian's house is a cave in the mountains where there are waterfalls and stuff like that
Majelist: Mix of tropical climates like Azurial and then just complete desert. The palace is near an inactive volcano where the Guardian lives
Sonmure: Just a giant forest. The castle is a giant tree in the heart of the forest. The Guardian lives in the castle where the gemstone is held (like, lower down on the tree)
Zephyrus: Mountains and temples basically. The palace is located in the middle of a circular mountain range so it's secluded from the outside world. The Guardian would live in a cave somewhere in the mountain range
In terms of military, I would imagine Majelist having the best military while Zephyrus has the worst due to them being more free-spirited and friendly

I like the sound of all that. As you noted, some of our ideas overlapped. I also love that all the Guardians are pretty much living in caves. How much contact do they have with people? Or do Guardians mostly keep to themselves?
Also, to quickly summarize everything, decades ago (what at least twenty to thirtyish years?) Majelist made some sort of threat to the other kingdoms. Now, the current princess is interested in gaining more power, so the threat looms again.

Guardians probably don't talk to anyone lmao XD I imagine Guardians don't talk much and mainly speak through the royal families (which could have potential of Majelist lying about what the Fire Guardian is really saying)
And that's pretty much what I was thinking, yeah!

Post by Amber on Feb 24, 2022 19:14:13 GMT -5
Those poor Guardian's. Sounds like rough business, though works in the favor of the fire guys. And pretty much for anyone in the royal family who wants to use the name of their respective Guardian to their advantage.
Cool, sounds good!
Is there anything else you want to go over or that needs to be discussed?
