Yeah, I’m aroace myself and I agree with everything you said here, and I actually headcanon several other characters as aroace/a-spec that do in canon have romantic relationships, but I kind of was just really hoping Leopardstar would not be interested in romance at all. I thought what she said in I think chapter 2? of the preview that she wasn’t interested in toms (and she seemed almost kind of confused by her friends’ interest to me) just was relatable to me personally and my experience with being aroace. Same. I'm ace too and was still headcanon Leopardstar as such, but the only aroace character we have is, what, Mousefur, I think? And even then, she was a minor character. Just once, I'd love to have a warrior protagonist who just didn't have a love interest at all. The closest we have is Hollyleaf, and even then, she might've become mates with Fallen Leaves according to Kate and the family tree, something I tend to take with a grain of salt anyway. And don't worry, Amber , you weren't being rude at all. There's Shadowsight, unless TBC 6 randomly has him fall in love with Sparrowhawk or something.

Hopefully one of the next series protagonists won’t get a love interest at all, preferably Frostpaw because I’m also sick of medicine cat romance drama.

Yes, I definitely appreciate that he doesn’t have one! Please don’t let that happen, I’d probably just not even bother finishing TBC if Shadowsight got some random love interest for no reason.

Shadowsight is a medicine cat, and they're forbidden from taking mates anyway (obviously this doesn't stop a few from breaking that rule anyway, but they're not the focus here for me).

we already had a similar situation with leafstar about leaders having mates and kits...why tf are they recycling this plot? can they just not? whats wrong with making leopardstar a complex character away from all this crap? they're not the same, though. leafstar wanted kits and a mate, but felt like the world was telling her the those and leadership were mutually exclusive and couldn't coexist. leopardfur doesn't want kits and never did, that was made clear earlier in the book when Sunfish asked her to be a mother to Whiteclaw. this isn't "leadership and motherhood are incompatible", this is "leopardfur is an extremely career-driven character for whom everything else falls second and she's okay with that"

Alright, I figured out why that name sounded familiar. I love the name Emberdawn and it sounds super pretty. But at the same time, I felt like I heard it somewhere before. So I just looked it up. Emberdawn is the name of a BlogClan member. She's stated here to be a dark ginger she-cat with blue eyes. Interesting! Though so far I haven't been able to find a description for Emberdawn in this book, aside from the fact that they're female.

Don't forget folks that Mistystar's Omen did imply Leopardstar had been in love with someone at least one point in her life when she stated that once thought she would have kits, but never did. Who this was referring to is anyone's guess.

Chapter 10: The next morning, the chill had given way to milder weather. When she assigned patrols that day, she made sure to keep Mosspelt in camp, and worries if her jealousy over Frogleap and Mosspelt was too obvious, deciding that she was going to work with Mosspelt that day so there wouldn't be any implication of hard feelings. Catching Mosspelt's eye, she flicks her tail and beckons her over. Mosspelt leaves the willow stems she's been weaving and bounds over, asking how she can help. Leopardfur asks if she'd like to help bring back another fish for the Clan. Mosspelt looks delighted at the idea of hunting, and says she'd love to. Leopardfur says it'd just be the two of them, because she plans to steal another fish from that twoleg. Mosspelt's enthusiasm quickly fades and and says she thought it was dangerous. Leopardfur mutters that maybe for apprentices, glancing at Heavypaw, but she says the two of them are warriors and they've done it before. She adds that the twoleg stole it from them anyways, so they're setting it right. Mosspelt seems to understand, and Leopardfur hopes that when Frogleap hears that the two of them went out hunting together, he wouldn't suspect she's jealous.
The two head out back to the spot where the twoleg was the other day, and Mosspelt seems pleased to be able to to tell Frogleap that they'd be brining back good prey for the Clan. The twoleg is back, sitting on a stump near the water. Leopardfur assumes that it wouldn't be expecting to see them again, but notes that the twoleg seemed oddly still. Mosspelt asks if it's playing dead. Leopardfur mutters she guesses so, to try and fool the fish, and concedes that perhaps some twolegs are smarter than she might give credit for. Suddenly then, the twoleg gets up and goes into the colorful den, and Leopardfur hisses they need to be quick, and the two dart forward to the container with the fish. Mosspelt nimbly maneuvers around the rocks, and Leopardfur admits to herself that perhaps she can see why Frogleap likes her. But as the two arrive at the container, the twoleg barges out of the den suddenly, catching both of them off-guard. The twoleg has a long stick with a heavy-looking web at the end of it. Mosspelt, with a fish in her mouth, only looks on in horror as the web traps her. She drops the fish and claws at the web, but to no avail as the twoleg scoops her up and yowls triumphantly. Leopardfur backs away, unsure what to do. Mosspelt yowls to leave her, and to save herself. Leopardfur says no, but knows that she can't take the twoleg by herself, and she needs help. She bounds away, bitter at leaving Mosspelt, and glances back to see the twoleg taking Mosspelt into the colorful den.
Leopardfur races home, and as she arrives at the camp, Crookedstar looks up at her and immediately gets to his paws, as if he instinctively knew something was wrong. Voleclaw and Cedarpelt, who were sharing a trout with him, do the same. Crookedstar approaches her, and Leopardfur swallows back her guilt and pride, huffing that Mosspelt has been taken by a twoleg. Crookedstar takes her aside, and gently asks her to explain. Leopardfur begins to explain her idea with the twoleg container of fish. Crookedstar isn't pleased, but he assures her they'll get Mosspelt back. Frogleap then explodes from the warriors' den, and asks how Leopardfur could have done something so foolish. Shame burns at her as she realizes she can't answer that in a way that won't hurt him. She tells him that they were fetching food for their Clan, and asks why wouldn't they take her. Frogleap snarls because Mosspelt is carrying his kits.
Leopardfur feels her heart drop, and she realizes that her suspicions were true. That Mosspelt and Frogleap were mates, and knows she's never stopped loving Frogleap. She reminds herself that she chose the Clan, not him. Leopardfur looks back to Crookedstar, and says she's going to get her. Crookedstar says not alone, and tells her to take Voleclaw and Cedarpelt. Frogleap says he'll go too, but Crookedstar denies, saying his judgement is clouded and if any cat can get Mosspelt back, it's Leopardfur. He adds that if they're not back by nightfall, then he'll send another patrol. Leopardfur looks at Frogleap, and his angry glare hurts her more than she thinks his claws would, but promises to go and get her back. She rounds up Voleclaw and Cedarpelt, leading them out of the camp and to the twoleg den. As they approach, they can hear Mosspelt's defiant howls. Cedarpelt asks how they're going to get her out. Leopardfur explains that the den is made of weird twoleg things, but it moves easily and they can slip underneath it. Voleclaw perks up his ears and points his tail to a monster. Leopardfur notices it too, but Cedarpelt mutters that it's asleep. Leopardfur says she hopes it stays that way.
Voleclaw asks where they twoleg is, and as if on cue, the twoleg leaves the den and heads towards the monster. Leopardfur says now, and the three race out of the trees and quickly dash to the side of the den and wriggle underneath, their eyes adjusting to the weird orange bloom. Mosspelt hisses their names, still trapped in the webbing, and snarls she can't get out. Cedarpelt peers underneath the den, and remarks that the twoleg is still at the den. Voleclaw and Leopardfur start trying to get the webbing off of Mosspelt, eventually able to tear through the weird object and giving Mosspelt a tunnel to leave through. Cedarpelt hisses that the twoleg is coming back. As Mosspelt squirms away from the webbing, Voleclaw and Cedarpelt help her wriggle underneath the den. The twoleg comes back in, and yowls at Leopardfur, reaching for her, but she slashes at it and feels uneasy as she feels her claws slice open the twoleg's flesh. She follows them under the den and spots Voleclaw helping Mosspelt back to the treeline. Cedarpelt is waiting for her, asks if she's alright, and then the two follow Mosspelt and Voleclaw as the twoleg's shouting gets louder. The four of them keep running until they reach a patch of bracken. Mosspelt's paw is sprained, and Leopardfur apologizes for getting her captured. Mosspelt tells her the Clan was hungry, and they needed to show the twoleg that the fish was RiverClan's. Voleclaw helps Mosspelt as the four go back to the camp. As they arrive, Frogleap is pacing anxiously at the entrance. When he spots Mosspelt, he immediately takes over for Voleclaw, and Leopardfur feels hurt that he didn't even acknowledge her, and it stings even more as Frogleap noses Cedarpelt gently and thanks him for saving her.
Mudfur comes out of his den, and says that she needs to rest. As Frogleap settles her down into a nest in the medicine den, Frogleap shoots an angry look at Leopardfur, who was following them. He says she could have been killed, but Mosspelt says not to be so hard on Leopardfur, as she's the one who rescued her. Frogleap retorts that she was the one who got her captured. Mosspelt says she went willingly, and it was brave of her to rescue her. Leopardfur says she couldn't just leave her there, and Mosspelt thanks her, asking her to thank Cedarpelt and Voleclaw as well. Leopardfur says she will, and she'll leave the two in peace for now. Mudfur softly mews that he's glad she's alright, and then focuses his attention on Mosspelt's paw. Leopardfur feels some pride returning hearing Mudfur's praise, and although he didn't seem to support her as deputy, she knows he loves and cares about her, and that means more to her than she thinks he knows.
But, she thinks to herself that it would take a while for Frogleap to forgive her. She asks herself why she did it, wondering if it were just laziness and an excuse to not hunt, or some other reason she can't piece together. She concludes that with the potential alliance between ShadowClan and ThunderClan, RiverClan will need all the prey it can get, especially with ShadowClan pressing at their borders and stealing their food. She decides that she needs to persuade Crookedstar to take back Sunningrocks. They need to reclaim the land they lost to ThunderClan, and then start chasing ShadowClan off their territory, and doing those things would be the only way RiverClan can survive.

You know what I realized? There really isn't any suspense when you know they survive to the end of the arc or even further. Mosspelt is currently still alive. I do understand why Frogleap was upset, though. Also, Dawnflower will be born soon I see.

So I'm caught up and this is pretty entertaining so far. I can see why the chapters seem condensed and rushed at the same time, but I don't think it seems too bad. I'll have to wait and see to judge that better.
I really like the focus on Leopard's family, her time as a mentor, and her position as a deputy. It feels fresh, because nowadays we don't really get good POV's of these, or at least not as much, so this is very appreciative. And the introduction of new prey like ducks, but also new dangers like pikes, is very interesting!
The build-up of her character also helps show why she's the way she is. Why she's more inclined to fighting over peaceful solutions, since Mudfur and Crookedstar rolled over to the likes of Brokenstar and also TC, despite so many losses on their end. And also why she was so hellbent on getting revenge for Whiteclaw, it wasn't romantic like many thought it was, but more so a because she was somewhat a maternal figure to Whiteclaw, and he meant a lot to her. I'm happy to see things from different perspective, because it definitely makes it easier to see certain characters in a different light.
I also found her relationship with Frogleap to be very realistic. I know people are going to pull the "gender reasoning" arguments again when it's not that in the least. A tom could equally be in Leopard's position as well. Being deputy is a lot of work, and then being a leader means they'll probably outlive a lot of their own clanmates, including their own mates even. A leader has to put their clan before everything, including their kin, mate, and even themselves after all.
I think the way she and Frogleap settled things was on the mature and realistic side, so I don't mind it in the least. They both loved each other, but they both had different visions of their futures, and what they wanted just didn't match up. So them breaking things off and moving on is the better option, so I applaud the Erins for going that route.
And god, I don't want to see people start accusing Frogleap of "pressuring" Leaopardfur or something or treating her like an "incubator" etc. Like at least wait for the full release before any of that nonsense.
Additionally, I do like the idea that Leopardfur seems to be biromantic and asexual, she's quite open with she-cats in this book so far, enjoying their compliments, trying to show off to them, and retaining close relationships. But she's also not interested in having kits, at least not when she's in higher positions because of the workloads and whatnot, but she is very maternal to Whiteclaw. So I think her being bi-ace is nice.

And you see couples unfortunately break up all the time because one is so career-driven that they forget to slow down, which seems to be the case here. It's not like with, say, Finleap, who only wanted kits as a means to an end. It doesn't seem like Frogleap was being demanding either, but more so speaking out of concern, especially considering the circumstances and how it's affected Leopardfur as a whole. I think my only gripe is that I wish the two growing apart had actually been shown.

Frogleap was upset, but understood that she didn't want kits. Besides, if anything, Leopardstar's the problematic one here. After they went their separate ways, she's consciously aware of how jealous she is of him and Mosspelt and how petty she's being by being rude to them. She lessens up and realizes that it's wrong, and the only time Frogleap was ever truly "rude" to her (thus far, anyways), is when Mosspelt is captured by the twoleg. If people demonize Frogleap over this, then yikes.

There’s nothing wrong with either of them realizing they just can’t sacrifice or make compromises on something important to them for the other. and it’s great that they were able to maturely talk it over and come to the decision to amicably end things.

Chapter 11: Leopardfur glances up at the night sky, and feels frustrated that she hasn't had a good chance to talk to Crookedstar about reclaiming their territory. She gets up from her nest in the warrior's den and heads out to the camp clearing. She peaks into the nursery to check on Mosspelt. She's curled up with Frogleap beside her. Mudfur is hardly visible in the shadows, watching over Mosspelt. He gives a small nod to Leopardfur, and then continues sorting herbs in the darkness. As Leopardfur pads away, she thinks that it would be good to have kits in the camp, even if those kits would represent that Frogleap loved Mosspelt more than he did Leopardfur. As Leopardfur approaches the camp entrance, Graypool, who is guarding with Silverstream, gives her a friendly nod, and for the first time, Leopardfur notices that there are flecks of lighter gray fur on Graypool's pelt, and wonders if she should consider moving to the elder's den. Silverstream grunts that Leopardfur should be asleep, but Leopardfur says she can't, and needs to go for a walk. Graypool says that Crookedstar is outside to stretch his legs, and Leopardfur realizes that it's the right opportunity to talk to him about their territory. She goes outside and spots him sitting peacefully at the edge of the river. Crookedstar greets her, and asks what's keeping her awake. Leopardfur stiffens, and asks how long until they're going to have full bellies. Crookedstar eyes her, and asks if she's talking about leaf-bare, and then adds he's not backing down from their agreement with Brokenstar. Leopardfur insists he made it with a leader who is no longer in power, and surely Nightpelt would be more reasonable and wouldn't uphold that agreement. Crookedstar murmurs he doesn't want to disturb the peace. Leopardfur snorts that it's getting harder and harder to keep the fresh kill pile full every day. Crookedstar asks if it's truly ShadowClan's fault considering they're hopeless fishers, and only take the land prey. Leopardfur mews that they scare away all the prey they normally eat. Crookedstar mumbles that perhaps it's the price of peace.
She looks at him, and says that slowly, their land is being stolen, reminding him of the loss of Sunningrocks and ShadowClan practically owns their territory now, and asks how long it'll be until they all starve. Crookedstar breaks away from her and looks out onto the water, gently meowing that they'll cross that river when they come to it. Leopardfur doesn't understand why Crookedstar seems so neglectful of the danger. Leopardfur tells him that if they don't make a stand now, they may never reach that river. Crookedstar says that if they do, then they risk war, and could lose even more in that. Leopardfur gets frustrated that he seems to be declaring defeat before he had even started, and snarls they can't lose. Crookedstar mutters neither he or she can guarantee that, and he'd rather not risk the peace they have. Leopardfur angrily says that big risks come with big rewards, and he interjects with even bigger problems. He looks away again, gazing upon the river. Leopardfur realizes she's wasting her breath, and that with Crookedstar as leader, nothing could change.
Later, Leopardfur is organizing patrols for the morning, and begins to ask Blackclaw to lead one towards ShadowClan, but then Whiteclaw races in, announcing that Nightpelt is here and wants to speak with Crookedstar. Crookedstar emerges from his den, and asks why he wants to see him. Whiteclaw says Nightpelt didn't say. Leopardfur turns to Rippleclaw and Blackclaw and orders them to finalize the patrols and take whoever they like. She goes to Crookedstar and asks if she can join him. He says yes, but to let him do the talking. The two leave camp, and Leopardfur wonders why Nightpelt doesn't have the -star suffix yet. Crookedstar grunts that perhaps he hasn't a chance to go to the Moonstone, and that ShadowClan is likely a mess given their last leader was driven out. They finally reach Nightpelt, and Leopardfur notes how boney and skinny he really is. Crookedstar orders Emberdawn, Beetlenose, and Whiteclaw away from Nightpelt, and greets him. Nightpelt remarks he's glad Crookedstar took the time to meet them. Crookedstar apologizes for the trouble ShadowClan has been in, and Nightpelt mews that with Brokenstar gone, things will change, and with change, more mouths to feed. Leopardfur begins to ask if he intends to ask for more territory, but keeps silent. Crookedstar eyes him evenly and says that when leaf-bare is upon them all, every cat is hungry.
Nightpelt agrees, and says that now that WindClan is gone, there is more hunting to spare. Leopardfur blinks in surprise, asking herself why she didn't think of using WindClan territory to hunt like ShadowClan has been. Crookedstar gazes at him, saying nothing. Nightpelt goes on, apologizing for Brokenstar's actions and he'd like to propose an alliance between the two of them. He says he understands that ShadowClan hunting on RiverClan territory has caused some tension, and apologizes for it, promising to stop it and even Brokenstar would have admitted it wasn't a permanent solution. Nightpelt says they should split the moor evenly, to avoid potential trouble in the future and so both of their Clans can thrive. Crookedstar asks about ThunderClan's opinion, and Nightpelt snorts that he doesn't care about them, as they're not as pragmatic as they are. Crookedstar mews that he thinks ThunderClan would want a share of the land, and Leopardfur snarls that they've already taken land, but then shuts up as Crookedstar shoots her a warning glare. Nightpelt remarks that they took it because they think it belongs to them. Crookedstar asks for Leopardfur's opinion, surprising her, but she says Nightpelt talks sense and it's a good plan. Crookedstar agrees, and asks her to send out hunting patrols there. Nightpelt grumbles that he won't be sending patrols there yet, as he wants to hear ThunderClan's reaction to it. Crookedstar is confused, as Nightpelt just said ThunderClan didn't matter. Nightpelt says they don't, but if they take issue with their alliance, then they ought to be prepared. Crookedstar suggests hiding their alliance from ThunderClan, as it might cause more trouble than what it's worth. Nightpelt nods, and says that while ThunderClan certainly things ShadowClan owes them loyalty, and it'd be wise to keep them thinking like that. Crookedstar concedes, and says he'll get Whiteclaw to escort Nightpelt off their border. As Nightpelt heads away, Crookedstar glances at Leopardfur and says that this is where patience gets us. Leopardfur agrees that it's an ideal solution, but at what cost so far.
Now, it's a gathering. Leopardfur is sitting with the other deputies at the base of the great rock. She eyes Cinderfur, the new ShadowClan deputy, and remarks he seems friendly enough and wonders if he agrees with Nightpelt's plan. She notes Tigerclaw, who had taken over for Lionheart since she saw him last, leans over and snorts that Nightpelt doesn't seem much like a leader considered he hasn't gone to the Moonstone yet. Nightpelt begins the gathering, announcing himself as ShadowClan's new leader and how they drove off Brokenstar. Tigerclaw mutters that naturally, there's no mention of their help. Cinderfur glares at Tigerclaw, and he only blinks back at him. Leopardfur begins to wonder how the alliance will work out, but then breaks away upon hearing Bluestar yowling that WindClan needs to return. Crookedstar comments that four clans isn't necessary, but Bluestar meows angrily that they have always been four Clans. Leopardfur calls out that they shouldn't go hungry for a Clan that can't defend it's territory, making Crookedstar glare at her. Tigerclaw objects, agreeing with Bluestar that WindClan must return. Bluestar tells Nightpelt that they helped them drive out Brokenstar, and part of that agreement was to get WindClan back. She tells Crookedstar that RiverClan's territory has always been full of rich prey, and they surely don't need access to any more land. Crookedstar looks down at his paws, looking defeated. Nightpelt mews after a moment that they'll allow WindClan to return, making Leopardfur shake with frustration, begining to fume that Crookedstar gave up so easily, and that Nightpelt abandoned the alliance at the first sign of pressure. She glares at Bluestar, noting her broader shoulders than Nightpelt's, and determined gaze. Tigerclaw leans in again and asks what she's learning. Leopardfur hisses at him, but Tigerclaw comments that Bluestar is impressive. Leopardfur calls her a bully, but Tigerclaw says that she reasoned with them. Leopardfur asks what he wants her to say. Tigerclaw meows that he wants to know why she spoke out when Crookedstar didn't. She says she refuses to let her Clan starve just because ThunderClan thinks otherwise.
Tigerclaw says he's glad, confusing Leopardfur, asking why. Tigerclaw says she's living up to her promise, and he's glad she sees that the Clans need fresh blood and energy to run them. Leopardfur's pelt prickles uneasily, wondering where Tigerclaw is getting at considering he openly contradicted her moments ago. She says she doesn't want WindClan to return, and Tigerclaw does, seeing how he agreed with Bluestar, and then thinking to herself that he's a snake-tongued warrior. Tigerclaw says she's his leader, and whether he agrees with her personally or not, she needs his support. Then, Leopardfur realizes the gathering is breaking up, and Cinderfur darts away without saying goodbye. Tigerclaw goes on, saying that surely he's still loyal to his Clan with his words and claws by supporting Bluestar and fighting for them, but what goes on in his mind is his own concern. Leopardfur frowns, as surely this is some form of disloyalty that he's showing by telling her all this. Tigerclaw murmurs that she clearly doesn't agree with Crookedstar all the time, like tonight. Leopardfur freezes, knowing he's right.
Tigerclaw draws himself up tall, meowing "It's not always easy being deputy, is it? You must support your leader, but at the same time, you're your own cat. That's why your leader chose you, because you can make your own decisions. We have one paw in the present, supporting our leaders, and one paw in the future, planning for the day when we will be leader. I would like to say we understand each other, perhaps better than another cat could. I would never betray your confidence. I admire you, Leopardfur. Your intelligence, your ambition. I hope that someday we will work together as leaders"
Leopardfur mumbles she should go, not wanting to be part of the conversation anymore, seeing RiverClan head out of Fourtrees. Tigerclaw silkily mews that they won't be deputies forever and some day, their Clans will look to them for leadership. He says that he and her can bring change together for moons to come, with her as Leopardstar. Leopardfur knows that being called that has been a dream of hers since she was a kit, but feels shame about thinking of her own leadership while Crookedstar still reigns. Tigerclaw says that change is frightening, but she has courage in her convictions. He says they waste so much time fighting for the wrong things, and surely she must see that too. He can tell she loves her Clan, but she can also see it's weaknesses. He knows she believes she can make it better, but she hasn't been given the oppurtunity yet, and begins to suggest they plan together, but Leopardfur cuts him off, saying her Clanmates are leaving and leaves him, trying to shake off the uncomfortable feeling she has. She spots him standing alone in the clearing, and thinks that there's something treacherous about his words, and he's surely asking her to break the warrior code.
And yet, she realizes that he may have a point in keeping their thoughts and opinions to themselves, asking what's the harm. She knows the Clan needs change, and if she was to become leader, she could be the one to usher that in. She wonders if it's a crime to have ambitions for her Clan, and what exactly makes Crookedstar's ideas wrong, and hers right. She then realizes Tigerclaw is right. Wanting change isn't disloyal. Nothing is disloyal so long as she has her Clanmate's best interests at heart.

And so it starts. Also, Graypool was made an elder pretty recently in F&I. Interesting. And I'm glad Leopardfur is finally accepting FrogxMoss' relationship, if only somewhat. I really hope she was able to repair her friendship with Frogleap eventually.
