Wow, that was sad, I feel bad for everyone who Sunfish and Whitefang were close to, especially Whitepaw. He was so excited to become an apprentice, only to have his mentor and his mother be killed shortly after in an unneeded battle. Since Silverstream is already a warrior, and Graystripe was a brand new warrior when the gorge battle happened, Whiteclaw must have been very young when he died. This timeline is zipping by! I hope this means we will get to see more of modern RiverClan, like with Sneezecloud, Mallownose, etc.

No gender revealed so far. The only thing we learn is that their parents are Sunfish and Beetlenose (though I think that was on the tree?), their foster/adoptive sister is Silverstream, and their younger brother is Whitepaw/Whiteclaw. I'll be sure to look out if it's revealed later in the book though. That was actually first revealed in Crookedstar's Promise. That book ended with Sunfish as the mother of Vixenkit and Grasskit, as well as the foster mother of Silverkit. Thanks! I'm actually going through chapter 5 right now and we have it revealed! Vixenleap is a she-cat.

I have a feeling that A Light In The Mist will be in The Broken Code section of "Have you read them all?"
When I got Graystripe's Vow last year in October, it had Darkness Within in the "Have you read them all?" section even though it hadn't released yet. maybe it was because the preview for DW had just released.

I feel so bad for Whitepaw and Leopardfur. Two awesome cats are dead so early... I really liked Sunfish too. It must be especially hard on Whitepaw since he's so young having lost two cats he loves.

Chapter 5: In the days since Sunfish's death, Leopardfur's been trying to work through the grief of losing her, but knows that Whitepaw was taking it even harder. Normally he's bouncy and energetic, but lately he's been very quiet. As she looks around the wilderness for Whitepaw, she wonders where he's gone, growing frustrated that he tends to speed off without warning or informing her. She sees Whitepaw's dark brown pelt moving through the reeds, and goes to him. As she nears, he pops out his head excitedly, telling her to guess what. She snaps what, wondering how he didn't seem to realize he was in trouble. He says proudly he found a sparrow's nest. Frowning, Leopardfur follows Whitepaw as he leads her to a fallen nest for sparrows. He says he'd like to take the feathers for Beetlenose's nest to keep him warm. Leopardfur grumbles that it's greenleaf, and Beetlenose doesn't need to keep warm. Whitepaw retorts that he's so used to having Sunfish beside him, he might get cold. Leopardfur forces herself to relax, knowing that like Beetlenose and herself, Whitepaw is still grieving. She suggests they go and hunt a duck instead, saying that their feathers are softer than a sparrow's. Whitepaw says a sparrow's feathers can do fine, and it's so hard sitting still to catch ducks anyways, and he'd rather do battle training. Leopardfur thinks about how often she'd persuaded Whitefang to change his training plans to fighting rather than fishing, although Whitefang always caught on to Leopardfur's attempts. She thinks that it might be unfair to him to make him sit still while he's still grieving, and perhaps focusing on moves could take his mind off Sunfish. She obliges, and begins to lead him to a stretch of earth beneath some trees, and begins to tell him to watch what she's doing, but she's cut off as he leaps onto her back and nips the tip of her ear, saying he's won. Leopardfur happily thinks back to when he was a small kit in the nursery, and all the times she play-fought with him. Sunfish and Beetlenose would always watch, knowing that Whitekit was safe with her. Although she wants to take his training seriously, she doesn't think some harmless fun could determent his training that much. She rears up and halfheartedly tries to shake him off, teasing that she'll squash him. As she drops to roll over, he leaps off her and says she's too slow, grabbing her tail and pummeling it with his hind paws. She pulls it free and grabs his smaller body, pushing him onto his back. Purring loudly, she pushes her nose into his bellow as he squeals in delight. She thinks they can just train tomorrow.
Later, Leopardfur waits with impatience as she thinks that for the third time that morning, she has tried to get Whitepaw to catch some fish hiding the greenleaf shade. Although he was a quick learner, he also seemed to find just about everything but his training interesting. She asks him to reiterate what she just told him. Whitepaw gaze drifts downstream and mutters that fish like shade. She says he's right, and that they're going to try swimming through the algae patch and if there's anything hiding underneath. She gestures for him to go first, but gets annoyed as he splashes into the water. She tells him to move his paws slowly, because he'll scare off all the fish otherwise. He says he's sorry, and he just forgot. She demands to know how he forgot, because it's the first thing she taught him. He sulkily says that it was ages ago, staring at the algae patch now spinning away downstream. Leopardfur takes a deep breath, and says they're going to try swimming underwater, slowly, to find more fish. She goes into the water and ducks under, and then peers behind her to see if Whitepaw is following her. She only sees water frothing near the drifting algae patch. Frustrated, she wonders what he's doing, but then Whitepaw emerges with a small minnow in his jaws. She swims to him, and says he was supposed to follow him as Whitepaw goes back to the shore and drops his minnow. He says he caught a fish. Leopardfur snaps that a tiny minnow isn't enough to feed a warrior, let alone a whole Clan. She thinks at this rate, Emberkit and Mosskit would be warriors by the time Whitepaw masters hunting. She wonders what Sunfish would think if she saw Whitepaw right now. She looks at Whitepaw, who is simply staring blankly at her. She asks if Whitepaw cares at all about helping their Clan. He snaps back to reality and says he does. She snorts that it seems it doesn't even want to become a warrior. Whitepaw says of course he does, but there's no enthusiasm in his mew. Leopardfur gets frustrated with him, and orders him to wait on the shore while she catches prey. She tells him that if he won't let her teach him, then at least let her help the Clan. She swims around and catches some large trout. As she heads back onto the shore with her catches, she grumbles that at least the morning wasn't wasted, dropping her prey beside Whitepaw's minnow. Whitepaw hadn't moved, only staring at his paws and not meeting Leopardfur's gaze.
She thinks that perhaps he would start listening to her now, and orders him to help carry their catches back to camp, and she'll then teach him how to hunt for frogs. As she picks up the fish, she begins to pad away, but Whitepaw follows her miserably. He then blurts out that he's sorry, his voice choked with sadness. She stops and glances back at him. Whitepaw's eyes are round and dark, and says he knows she's mad with him, but asks if she's going to stop being his mentor, his mew trembling. Leopardfur stares at him, and wonders to herself why he'd think that. As a mentor, it's her duty to not give up on her apprentice, and he was her best friend's kit. She would never give up on him. She realizes she might have been too harsh on him, and she knows quite well what it was like to grow up without a mother. She says she won't give up on him, and she'll be his mentor as long as he needs her. Whitepaw's amber eyes glisten with emotion, and says that he always thinks that he's going to wake up and Leopardfur, Beetlenose, Grasswhisker, Vixenleap, and Silverstream are all going to be gone, and he's going to be alone. Leopardfur touches her nose to his head, and says that it won't happen. She sees that scolding him had made him pay attention, but he's still grieving for Sunfish and Whitefang. She says she promised Sunfish to look out for him, and that's what she'll keep doing even when he's a warrior and full grown. He dips his head away from her, and mutters okay.
Leopardfur tells him to pick up one of the trout and to bring it to Silverstream and Vixenleap, since both she-cats would obviously appreciate his company, and spending time with his older sisters might help him out. As they enter the camp with their prey, Silverstream and Vixenleap spot him and warmly greet him, asking how his day went. Leopardfur knows he's in good paws for now, but then overhears Rippleclaw growling that ThunderClan killed two of their warriors. He's talking to Crookedstar and Oakheart. Rippleclaw growls that they should have retaliated by now. Stonefur, who is with them, agrees, saying that Oakheart and Crookedstar didn't watch them die. Leopardfur sorrowfully thinks that she did, and pictures Whitefang's blood spilling all over sunningrocks. Ottersplash grumbles that she's sure Crookedstar won't let this go, and he's just being cautious. Stonefur says the time to get revenge is now. Rippleclaw says the time was when they buried Whitefang, and now they've lost Sunfish. Piketooth bitterly meows that StarClan gave them those rocks, and ThunderClan needs to understand that they have no claim to them. Rippleclaw grumbles the sooner the better.
Leopardfur's heart pounds, knowing they're still grieving for Whitefang, but she agrees with them. With every passing day, ThunderClan gets away with their murder of Whitefang and Sunfish. She remembers how Mudfur told her that RiverClan's destiny is intertwined with hers, and if Crookedstar and Oakheart are thinkin of fighting back, then it's a discussion she should be a part of. Mudfur comes up beside her, and asks if she should be taking part of Clan gossip rather than training Whitepaw. Leopardfur swallows back a retort and says he's eating with his sisters. Mudfur says he can eat later, once he's earned it. Leopardfur is puzzled, saying that cats don't need to "earn" to eat, but then wonders if Mudfur knows Whitepaw is behind on his training. She grumbles that she's taking him to hunt frogs, annoyed that she needs to justify herself to her father, and goes to Whitepaw. But, as she goes to him, she spots Frogleap resting in a pool of shade at the edge of the clearing. He's watching her, and she avoids his gaze, wondering if he overheard Mudfur. As she reaches Whitepaw, she tells him he's had enough to eat and she's taking him out again. He follows her out of the camp, but sees he's not enthusiastic still. Her patience running thin, she asks what's wrong. Whitepaw asks if they really need to hunt frogs, because they taste funny. Annoyed, Leopardfur says that he's hunting for his Clan, and Birdsong enjoys frogs. Whitepaw numbly says okay, and scuffs the marshy grass across the meadow where they've stopped.
She asks what he can smell. He says grass, and water. She asks what kind of water, figuring he should be able to place the stagnant stench that gave away that it was an ideal place for frogs. Whitepaw looks at her and goes "I don't know. Wet water?"
Irritation twitches her paws and as she's about to scold him, Frogleap appears. Leopardfur is surprised, having not scented him or hear him. Frogleap apologizes for intruding, but gently tells Whitepaw that he thinks Leopardfur wants him to learn the difference between running water and still water. Whitepaw sniffs, asking what's the difference. Frogleap explains that river birds prefer running water, while frogs prefer still water. If he can tell the difference, it narrows down the prey he can hunt. Whitepaw sticks his tail out and says why he should bother scenting it when he can clearly see it's still water, gesturing to the marsh. Frogleap mews that a great RiverClan warrior can scent it before they see it, but if Whitepaw wants to be ordinary, then it's fine. Whitepaw opens his mouth, but then Frogleap points with his tail to the marsh, telling him he's spotted a frog. He goes into a hunter's crouch. He says that a frog is his namesake, and asks if they should catch it. Whitepaw eagerly mews that they should catch it. He beckons Whitepaw to follow him, and Whitepaw eagerly does, copying his moves. Leopardfur gets frustrated, wondering why Whitepaw never enthusiastically obeyed her like that.
Frogleap and Whitepaw catch the frog, with Frogleap letting Whitepaw deliver the killing blow. Leopardfur can't tell if she should be irritated that Frogleap overtook her lesson, or glad that Whitepaw finally caught something. She wonders if she's just not cut out to be a mentor, seeing how well Frogleap and Whitepaw worked together. She forces a purr, saying well done. Frogleap mews that he's a natural. He tells Whitepaw to try by himself this time, and Whitepaw races off. Once Whitepaw is out of earshot, Leopardfur asks why he listens to him and not her. Frogleap sympathetically mews that she was his friend before being his mentor, and relationships are hard to change once they're fixed. She asks if he's suggesting he needs a different mentor. Frogleap says of course not, but the fact that they're friends as well as mentor and apprentice might affect Whitepaw, saying that the young tom might be scared to lose Leopardfur's friendship. She asks why she can't be his friend and mentor at the same time. Frogleap says she can, but it might be difficult when Leopardfur is the closest thing he has to a mother. She looks away, not wanting to be lectured, but knows he's right, and remembers Sunfish asking her to look after Whitepaw. Frogleap says she just needs to be gentle with him, and to be patient. He's still grieving, just like he and Leopardfur are for Sunfish. She looks to Whitepaw. He's lost interest in the frogs and is instead looking at the sparrows chirping in the trees. She goes up to Whitepaw, and asks if he thinks he could catch one. Whitepaw looks thoughtful and says he thinks he can. Frogleap pads up and says to keep low, and Leopardfur says to let his tail skim the grass.
The birds flutter in and out of the trees, and Leopardfur gently says to keep his weight in his haunches, not his paws, and to keep his tail still. To her surprise, Whitepaw obeys. She tells him to flatten his ears, and he does. She realizes with cheer that he's listening to her. She thinks that perhaps Frogleap had a point about being gentle and persistent, like Sunfish was to him. Fur brushes her flank as Frogleap stops beside her, purring that she's a natural too. She glances back at him, swallowing back a purr. She breathes that Whitepaw can do it, and her heart soars as Whitepaw creeps up the tree, leaps up, and grabs a bird that had begun to flutter away. He slams the bird to the bird, and delivers the killing blow. She thinks to herself that Whitepaw truly was learning, and she was teaching him, and she's upholding her promise to Sunfish.
Leopardfur watches Whitepaw as he lunches at a pinecone she'd laid out for him. She thinks that in the past half-moon, he'd grown so much. She thinks that Whitepaw had finally begun to master everything she was teaching him; in half the time it took her no less. She sees how muscled he's become under his dark brown pelt, and how skilled he's become. She's very proud of him. Leopardfur wonders where Frogleap is, knowing she'd asked him to help him with Whitepaw's training with a sneak attack. Then, she scents Frogleap peering from beyond some reeds, while Whitepaw focuses on the pinecone. Frogleap leaps towards him, yowling. Whitepaw spins around, surprised, and rears back. As Frogleap lands on Whitepaw, Whitepaw glances to Leopardfur, making sure she's safe before focusing on Frogleap once more. As Whitepaw prepares a blow, Frogleap leaps off and looks at Whitepaw. Whitepaw, surprised, asks what Frogleap is doing. Frogleap dips his head respectfully, and says he was testing his reaction to an ambush and he defended himself well. Leopardfur says that she noticed Whitepaw even made sure she was okay, and that was something that impressed her. She looks to Frogleap, and says she thinks it's about time for his warrior assessment. Frogleap blinks happily and says he thinks so. His amber eyes glowing, Whitepaw's fur stops spiking and asks really. Leopardfur says she thinks he is, and she'll mention it to Crookedstar when she sees him next. Whitepaw looks at her, and thanks her. He says he knows he's probably been really difficult, but he appreciates her sticking by him and helping him, but his voice trails off as he looks to the sky, admitting he wishes Sunfish were around. Leopardfur's throat tightens, and knows she wishes that too, and wonders if Sunfish is watching them from StarClan.
As they head back to camp, Leopardfur thinks about how she's going to tell Crookedstar about Whitepaw. She wonders if she could suggest a name for him, and thinks of possibly naming him Whitefang, but figures Whitepaw would want his own name. She then spots Crookedstar, Oakheart, Mistyfoot, Beetlenose, and Loudbelly talking, all of them agitated and looking dark. She hurries towards them, blinking questioningly at Crookedstar, but he doesn't seem to take notice. He tells the cats that if they see any ThunderClan cat near their border, to chase them off. Beetlenose frowns, and asks what if they don't cross the scent line. Oakheart says to attack anyway. He adds that if they refuse to retreat, then it's a declaration of war. Leopardfur realizes that it might be a chance to avenge Whitefang and Sunfish's deaths. She asks to join the patrol. Oakheart looks at her, and says the patrol has already been chosen. Leopardfur argues that she wasn't even around, but Oakheart again says the patrol has been chosen. Leopardfur mutters that it's not fair, and she has a right to fight for her Clan. Oakheart stares her down and says she was too quick to fight last time. Leopardfur argues against it again, but Oakheart says she has an apprentice, and it's no place for him. She says he can stay in the camp, but Crookedstar says Oakheart is right, and a young warrior like Leopardfur is needed in case ThunderClan attacks the camp. Leopardfur feels fury in her chest, wondering how it's fair that she can't be part of the battle so she can avenge two of the cats she loved most. Crookedstar and Oakheart stare at her while the others shift uneasily. Oakheart peers past Leopardfur and tells Frogleap he wants him on the patrol too, because he trained with Loudbelly and fight well together. Leopardfur snorts that she trained with both of them, but Oakheart ignores her as he leads his patrol out of the camp, Frogleap following behind them.
Whitepaw bounces up to Leopardfur and asks if she really thinks ThunderClan might attack them here. He glances at Emberkit and Mosskit, who are playing with Heavykit and Shadekit. Whitepaw asks if he can help guard the camp. Leopardfur shakes her head, still bitter about being left behind, and says they're going to patrol around the camp and make sure their camp walls have no weaknesses or holes. As she leads Whitepaw through the reed tunnel, she thinks that while Oakheart stopped her this time, he can't stop her from fighting for her Clan forever.

Nothing on their parentages so far. The four kits just kind of pop into existence. I suspect they'll be revealed later in the book though.

Oh wow! A new type of prey, ducks..cool! I love Whiteclaw's family and how close they all seem. I agree with Cinder about the feelings of what's about to go down 0_o. Who is Emberkit? The only Embers I can think of are Emberfoot, those ones from DOTC, and Emberkit from Cloudstar's Journey. I looked on the wiki, and there's no other Embers, I guess they were created for this book or something. I'm assuming Mosskit is Mosspelt.

I feel so bad for Whitepaw. :c I can't believe how much I like him already for a cat we never really saw in the first arc. Also, we only ever knew him as a dark cat with a white paw. Now we have a full pelt colour. Vicky did once say that she imagines him as dark brown, so it's nice they kept him as that. And we now know his eye colour to be amber.
Aw, little Mosspelt, Shadepelt and Heavystep. No Silverpaw, though. At this point, I'm pretty sure Greenflower was forgotten about. Who in the world is Emberkit? Well, time for Oakheart's death I suppose. It sounds like we're at that spot. Which means we're in Into the Wild, so Whiteclaw's death will be soon. I'm not looking forward to it. Actually, considering this chapter called Silverstream Whiteclaw's sister...

Going to war again already, even if a ThunderClan cat hasn't crossed the scent line? Yeesh, Oakheart. Wow really? These books are determined to make Oakheart look bad . Okay, I can understand why he's angry at them, but out of all cats, I expected Oakheart to be the least likely to want to go after ThunderClan considering Bluestar is the leader or deputy at this point in time.

Sunfish and Beetlenose had Grasswhisker and Vixenleap as their first litter. Silverstream was also fostered/adopted by Sunfish and Beetlenose, and raised with Grasswhisker and Vixenleap. Whiteclaw is the only kit in their second litter.

We're nearing or already on ItW, so Bluestar would be leader at this time (note that Silverstream is already a warrior). And to be fair, Oakheart is deputy and thus expected to be leader, so he kinda has to put his personal feelings aside and it's been seasons since he met Bluestar at this point. It also serves as an interesting contrast to, say, Graystripe, who couldn't even fight RiverClan because they were Silverstream's Clanmates. That being said, in this particular instance, yeah, there's no need to attack ThunderClan unprovoked. It's clearly the grief talking, losing two Clanmates in such a short amount of time, but still. His behavior in RD felt especially OOC, though.

Whiteclaw was the only kit of his litter. Its said Whiteclaw is an only kit? and his mother was Sunfish? is Grasswhisker and Vixenleap Sunfish's 2nd litter, then? Grasswhisker and Vixenleap are from an earlier litter of Sunfish x Beetlenose. Whiteclaw came from a second litter.

Lilystem is the mother of Heavykit and Shadekit. Interesting! Wonder who the father is. this is why i preferred my headcanon where grasswhisker is male and the mom of heavy and shade is skyheart who is brown tabby lke heavtstep...now they cant find a dad for them because riverclan has no dads (in my family trees, i always have to find suitable dads that make sense bc theres no canon dads for anyone). there's no brown tabby male to be heavystep's dad now.
