TAWNYCOLT➳ 10 ➳ Hetero ➳ Craftwoman Apprentice ➳ ➳ Camp ➳ Jackdawheart ➳ aether ➳ _____________________________
Tawnycolt was huddled over a bunch of furs. She wanted to make some nice clothing out of them. Yes, hides were good to use, but she wanted something prettier. She decided to experiment on furs. Since furs were mostly used for bedding, Tawnycolt wanted to make a nice and warm piece of fur clothing. She had in her hands a deer's pelt and a cougar. While of similar colour, both furs felt different. Unfortunately, she wasn't making any progress with the deer skin. The hair on the pelt was too brittle to soften. She knew how to remove deer hair, but she didn't want to. The whole purpose was to keep the hairs on the hide, not take them off.
She eventually discards the deer pelt, and moves on to the cougar's. While Tawnycolt didn't know much about tanning the pelts and hides, she did do a good job at sewing them properly... well hides, not pelts. Not making any progress with the cougar pelt, Tawnycolt sighs. She throws the pelt onto the ground, before laying there. She sighs once more, before standing up. She slowly shakes out the pins and needles in her legs, before leaving her home. She looks around and spots Jackdawheart. Her mentor looked like he had an idea.
After spending a year as Jackdawheart's apprentice, Tawnycolt knew when he had an idea. It would usually be written all over the male's face. "Jackdawheart!" she calls out. "What are you doing? Can I join you?" She wanted to learn more from her mentor. He was very knowledgeable, and she hoped he'd be able to spark an idea in her mind. Seeing Jackdawheart was just what she needed. She was feeling too frustrated in not being able to properly sew the pelts, so a distraction was what she needed, and joining her mentor was the best distraction around.

(I am heeeeeere!) Dappledlight (currently she/her)| Camp | w/ Paintedbrow ℊℓоωHaving just lit one of the nearby torches, Dappledlight found her eyes drawn over to Paintedbrow, sitting alone and observing the workings of the camp. Even the craftswoman had noticed that there was a certain frustrated air about Brittlecolt, but she hadn't bothered to approach him or bother him about his duties. It wasn't her place. Even if she was very curious. Adjusting how her braid was sitting on her shoulder, so as the torch wouldn't put it at risk, Dappledlight paused. She considered the next mud house to be lit, then thought better of it. Instead, she walked toward Paintedbrow, making sure her torch was out of the way and as well controlled as it could be at all times. "Hello," she said lightly. Then she gestured to where her clanmate was sitting. "Mind if I join you?" Her tone was bursting with curiosity. Perhaps she also hadn't read the situation right. A sliver of doubt wondered through her, intent on a possibility of having interrupted the woman. It was completely possible, after all, that these sorts of things were not ... done. Randomly walking up to chat to someone who looked like they were focused on something else, that was. Ah well. Dappledlight bent down and made sure she stuck her burning torch into the ground far enough away from the bench to not be a hazard. "Anything I can do for you?" There. It seemed like that might possibly be a peace offering for any interruptance. Maybe.

IRONFEATHER➳ location: camp, status: with Fletchcolt (aether ) Ironfeather went about methodically skinning the deer. It was a task he had learned over many years of being a provider, and he approached it with care. The trick was to preserve as much of the usable flesh as possible—the hide for the craftsmen, the meat for cooking, the bones for making broths and stocks. Each cut he made was deliberate, the dimming light of the sky providing just enough for him to see his work.
At some point he became aware of a presence over his shoulder. He did not look up, but continued working. He intended to fully break down the kill in time to make supper for the clan. They had returned late from the hunt as it was, and he suspected the elders and mothers were growing grumpy. Even his stomach had begun to rumble, and he had found wild raspberries while on patrol.
“Sorry I missed the second deer, Ironfeather,” when Fletchcolt spoke he could hear the remorse in her voice. He wiped his hands on the cloth over his knee then glanced up, a hint of humor in his eye. His apprentice stood over him, stance sheepish. His instinct was to poke fun at her, but he held his tongue in favor of offering comfort. He knew she was hard on herself as it was.
“I’ve missed many more shots than I’ve made,” he said with a light chuckle. “Even the most seasoned providers can go days or weeks without hitting something substantial.” He craned his neck to look around her then requested, “Hand me that bowl?”
When she gave it to him, he placed the flank of the deer into it, then set it on the ground. “It’s not your aim you need to work on, but your timing. Never hesitate when the shot is clear.” He tossed some dried spices and herbs onto the deer then stood to place it over the fire. He walked slowly so his apprentice would join him as he added, “We’ll go out again tomorrow and get you a kill.”
Paintedbrow withdrew from her reverie as a silhouette made its way over to her. She recognized the figure as Dappledlight and lifted her face in welcome. “Here, you can sit here,” she said, sliding down so she was not taking up the whole bench. Dapplelight brought a torch with them and placed it safely above the grass.
“Anything I can do for you?” the craftsperson asked. At first the question sent a jolt of unease through Paintedbrow. She thought immediately of her growing abdomen and wondered if her secret was already out. But she quickly noted the tone of the question had been casual, not prying, and assumed it had been a mere coincidence. She was not far along yet for her clanmates to guess. And she had been careful of hiding her symptoms. Surely the craftsperson was simply making conversation.
“Not that I can think of,” she answered with a friendly shrug before adding, “The warmth of that torch was just what I needed.” She drew the shawl more tightly around her shoulders and looked up at the sky. The sun was fully gone now, and the gleaming white of the moon was drifting over the eastern horizon. She looked over at Dapplelight, returning the question with a slight arch of her brow.
“I was thinking of taking a walk after we eat. Do you want to come?” She typically took her walks alone, but it would have been rude not to ask. Besides, tensions with Nettleclan were at an all-time high, and leaving camp unaccompanied was always a risk.

Dappledlight (currently she/her)| Camp | w/ Paintedbrow ℊℓоωVery carefully, Dappledlight kicked her feet back and forth, observing Paintedbrow with curious and wide eyes. It was a bit difficult to pinpoint what she was thinking about for a second, but eventually she settled on, "You look like you have a lot on your mind." That was probably an understatement if Dappledlight had ever said anything. But she also didn't press Paintedbrow. She just took up the torch again, carefully holding it in one hand while she stood and held out her other hand. "I think a walk sounds like a perfect idea!" She wondered where they would be going. As far as she knew, there wasn't a lot going on outside the camp. Maybe there would be some birds to see, or some dear that the hunters had not scared away with their job. Either way, it looked to Dappledlight that getting Paintedbrow out of the camp as quickly as possible would be the best idea. Clearly there was something eating at the she-cat. Huh. Maybe she was hungry? "We could see if there is any food on the way?" Dappledlight hazarded a guess, hoping that it might result in a positive improvement to her clanmate's demeanor. She wasn't a provider, but she had some basic knowledge where to find berry bushes and the like. They were needed for her craft just as much as they were needed for the provision of the clan itself. "Or ... is there anything else I can do for you?"

DAYSPRING ➳ 25 ➳ Hetero ➳ Medicine Person ➳ ➳ Camp ➳ Alone ➳ Open to Interaction ➳ _____________________________
Dayspring hesitates before leaving. She thought about whether she should clean up her herbs first. She ummed and ahhed for a few minutes before picking up all the herbs and stuffing them in one of the herb shelves. Dayspring was never a neat person. It could easily be seen in the way she sometimes came back to camp full of mud, yet didn't seem to care as she went on with her work. Dayspring even lost some things because she misplaces everything. It just wasn't Dayspring if she tried to neaten everything in her home. Pulling away, Dayspring nods once in happiness. Seeing that everything was all good, she takes one more glance around her home, and leaves.
Her aim was to leave quickly. She wanted to grab the herbs she needed as soon as she could, then return for a nice long rest. She had thought about the dangers before she left, but once she was actually on the move, Dayspring was only excited. She completely forgot about the dangers that lurked past the camp's perimeter.

Paintedbrow's heart softened slightly at her clanmate's inquiry. Though the craftsperson was not prying, it was clear that Paintedbrow's swirling thoughts had somehow made their way onto her face. Good friend that Dappledlight was, they sensed something had changed. For a moment the guard considered divulging her news then and there. But something made her bite her tongue. The privacy of her unborn child? Fear of what others would say?
"Yes, let's grab something quick to eat on the way out," Paintedbrow agreed, standing rather hurriedly. "And no, you can't do anything for me. Except keep me company on my walk." She smiled.
Another diversion quickly presented itself. Over Dappledlight's shoulder, Paintedbrow spotted the familiar figure of Dayspring. The female medicine cat was moving swiftly and inconspicuously, which was exactly why the guard's eye was drawn to her. A bag was slung over her shoulder, making it clear that she was going somewhere. But where? Paintedbrow wondered, with the pale light of the moon in her periphery. Surely it was too late to hunt for herbs. Then again, she realized, that was hypocritical given she was moments away from leaving camp herself.
"Dayspring!" she called out to the other young woman, and she quickened her pace. As she moved in step with her other companion, she noticed a roasted squirrel hanging to cool by the fire. She grabbed it mindlessly off its hook as she continued walking, offering to share it with Dappledlight without speaking. As they caught up with Dayspring, she stated, "It's dangerous to leave camp alone at night. We'll accompany you, as we were headed out anyway."
She had planned on taking a simple walk, perhaps up toward the mountains, but it would be rude not to offer. Besides, there was safety in numbers. Most animals would flee at the sound of three human voices. Not to mention, Paintedbrow was the only one of them who was trained to wield a weapon. It would be negligent of her to allow Dayspring to leave alone.

DAYSPRING➳ 25 ➳ Hetero ➳ Medicine Person ➳ ➳ Camp ➳ Paintedbrow & Dappledlight ➳ ℊℓоω & mintedstar/fur🦇 ➳ _____________________________
Dayspring looks back when she hears her name being called. She felt surprised and nervous. She hoped that whoever called her name wouldn't block her from leaving camp. She turns to the voice, and smiles. "Hello, Paintedbrow. Dappledlight. How are you tonight?" she asks. The young female feels slightly relieved that it was only Paintedbrow that noticed her. She didn't use a loud voice when talking since she didn't want the others in camp to notice she had nearly left camp in the middle of the night. She felt even more relieved when Paintedbrow said she could join them rather than barring her from leaving.
"Really? That'd be a great help. I was just going through my herb collection when I noticed I needed some more. It's always good to be prepared, you see. If you could also look out for some, it'd be really helpful. I need coltsfoot, borage leaves, feverfew, catchweed, chamomile, moss, oak leaf and wintergreen. I was thinking of asking someone to join, but it's so late at night that I thought it'd be faster on my own. Since you two are joining me, three eyes are always better than one," she chatters. "How are you two, by the way? I haven't seen you in a while. It's probably because I've been holed up in my den, but I do need to get out more."
She takes a deep breath of fresh air. Now that Paintedbrow and Dappledlight are with her, she did feel less stressed out.

Dappledlight (currently she/her)| Camp | w/ Paintedbrow ℊℓоω w/ Dayspring PearlWith a lance toward Dayspring, Dappledlight ended up grinning very widely. "Why hello," she said. "Seems like a late night for all of us then. Fine by me." She was wondering, since this had turned into more of an herb excursion, whether she could use this as an excuse to collect some of her own replies. She just didn't mention it. Seemed like too much trouble to mention it however. Her main goal had been a distraction for Paintedbrow, so as long as that was taken care of, she was perfectly fine with however this night-trip turned out. "That sounds like a lot of herbs," she said with a low whistle. "Are they all around here though?" She knew a bit about various herbs. Some could be used as dyes and weavings, given enough treatment, but that didn't mean she knew all of the ones that Dayspring had just rattled off. Dappedlight ended up glancing at Paintedbrow, then started walking toward the exit of camp. Dayspring seems to have the conversation covered for the three of them, even though a very, very large part of Dappledlight wanted to cut in at various points. It was hard to keep ahold of the temptation, or to judge the pauses in Dayspring's words and whether or not she could cut in. "Er," she said after a second, then half winced as it ran over the end of what Dayspring was saying. "Sorry. I was about to say which way? To find your herbs?" She indicated the direction they were walking, then turned to look at Paintedbrow again. She wanted to check that her friend was doing alright.

Dayspring blinks at Dappledlight's questions. "Well," she says, taking a deep breath. "Borage leaves grow in the forest. They have small blue or pink star-shaped flowers and hairy leaves. Coltsfoot grows by water. It is a flowering plant with yellow or white flowers resembling dandelions. Feverfew also grows near water. It is a small bush with flowers resembling daisies, has a sharp tangy smell and small soft leaves. Catchweed is commonly found in hedges and low, shrubby vegetation. It is a plant with fuzzy green balls on long stems. Chamomile is found in sandy soil in cool areas. It is small, white flower with a large, yellow center. Moss is found in the forest. It is a spongy, soft green shrub, commonly found on trees or marshy areas. We can pick up oak leaves off the forest floor. It's a round, ruffled leaf. And wintergreen is found near oak trees in a sandy area. It is found using it's red berries."
She looks at both Dappledlight and Paintedbrow with expectation. "They're not that much. We can start in the forest. Most of the herbs will be found there." She starts to quicken her pace.

PAINTEDBROW➳ location: exiting camp, status: with Dappledlight and Dayspring (mintedstar/fur🦇 and Pearl ) Paintedbrow chewed on the inside of her cheek to suppress a smile, but it was a futile exercise. Dayspring rattled off in two breaths more herbs than Paintedbrow had ever heard of, as well as their various locations. It sounded like way too much work for one night. But there was little point in arguing. Besides, as the guard of the group she could always pull out the excuse of 'we should head back before Nettleclan shanks us in the dark.'
She humored the medicine woman and simply shrugged as they passed through the camp exit. "Sounds straight-forward enough," she said with good-natured sarcasm. Her intention had been to take a quiet walk but it had evolved into much more than that. She wasn't bitter, though. In fact, Paintedbrow appreciated the company of the two clanmates who she considered friends. They were already lifting her spirits, even if they were unaware that she had been troubled in the first place.
As they walked away from camp, the world quieted. She could no longer hear the providers preparing the nighttime meal or the mothers putting away fussy babes. Those sounds were replaced by the chirping of crickets and the breeze through the thicket.
"Just tell us if there are herbs nearby," she told Dayspring. "Dappledlight and I will be your designated leaf-pickers."
The night was quite cool. Perhaps a storm was approaching in the coming hours. At that moment, however, the moon was bright and full at their backs. "So how do you two feel about the deputy trials?" she asked. The whole clan had been talking about it for the last few days, especially when Marestar was out of earshot. From Paintedbrow's point of view, the whole thing was rather contrived. The trials had not been used for generations, and Marestar's selection was tardy as it was. But she would accept the result regardless. She was never much one for drama. She liked to leave the big decisions to other people.

DAYSPRING➳ 25 ➳ Hetero ➳ Medicine Person ➳ ➳ Camp ➳ Paintedbrow & Dappledlight ➳ ℊℓоω & mintedstar/fur🦇 ➳ _____________________________
Paintedbrow's sarcasm went straight over Dayspring's head. She had no idea what sarcasm was and even when faced with it, she woouldn't recognise it. She was simply that dense, and so replies to Paintedbrow's comment. "Sure is. You know, most of the herbs tend to be found in the forest or by the river. Of course, there are some that grow in rocks or waterfalls, but there aren't a lot of them. Aren't medicinal herbs exciting to learn? They have so many uses and something we can't live without!" She looks at Paintedbrow and Dappledlight with sparkling eyes. She loved herbs, and will always chatter about it if and when she could.
Dayspring really didn't look where she was going. As a rather dense and bookish female, Dayspring has absolutely no sense of direction. She was very lucky that Paintedbrow and Dappledlight were going with her, otherwise the normally intelligent female would end up completely and utterly lost even if she were only a few minutes away from camp.
At Paintedbrow's suggestion of Dayspring just pointing the herbs out for the two females, Dayspring was completely surprised. Even someone as intelligent as Dayspring had never thought of it. She just thought they could look for the herbs separately. "You're totally right! I didn't think of that. You're so smart, Paintedbrow!" At that thought, she smiles cheerfully at the female guard. The one thing Dayspring liked was talking to intelligent clanmates. It made her feel happy. She's only intelligent book-wise and medicine-wise though. Anything else, and Dayspring is more stupid than the average person. Even learning every day things like doing laundry can't seem to stick in the medicine woman's mind. "I'll cook for you and Dappledlight sometime tomorrow. As thanks for helping me gather herbs tonight."
Dayspring is suprisingly good at cooking. She has a very unique style when combining herbs into her cooking making it taste more delicious than normal. To Dayspring, anything that involves herbs is something she can do with ease. At Paintedbrow's question about the deputy trials, she frowns. "I don't like it," she says flatly. "I do understand the fact that in the past, it was used to weed out the weaker ones who wanted to be deputy, but a lot of clanmates died at the same time. I don't want anyone to die in this trial."

Dappledlight (currently she/her)| Outside of Camp | w/ Paintedbrow ℊℓоω w/ Dayspring PearlFor the time being, Dappledlight was quiet. Mostly, this was because of Dayspring's conversation. She wasn't sure she wanted to explain anything that she personally didn't understand herself. Talking herbs with Dayspring seemed like a recipe to et your ear talked off. Not that she would usually mind, but it was late and she didn't think that she had the attention span for it. So, afterward, she just made a affirmative sound and shot Dayspring a soft smile. The other woman was free to talk, as far as Dappledlight was concerned, but the craftwoman likely didn't have any way to engage. "I'm more than happy to do the collecting," she confirmed though. "Just say the word on when." She looked around at the forest, noting the growing darkness, and was at once glad that Paintedbrow was coming along. That seemed like the best wat to be protected, just in case there was any NettleClan warriors around. "Though actually seeing herbs as it gets darker is probably going to be tricky. We only have the one torch." And she wasn't sure how long that was going to last. "At any rate ... yes ... the deputy trails." Dappledlight's tone became ever so slightly pensive as she started thinking over all of this. It seemed to her like she needed to chose her words carefully in this manner. "I think it's stupid." Okay, maybe not the most careful or best for this matter. She continued on. "A ... test isn't representative of how a deputy will actually preform. Marestar should have chosen based on observation of cats, not on who might succeed in a trail that is an act - not an actual issue or situation that a deputy might handily completely different when it isn't a test." There was tension and slight annoyance in her tone of voice. She didn't like this. She also was decently sure that Marestar's choice - whoever won the challenges - would likely be good. Probably. But she had her doubts. "I'm just not sure about it," she added. "I hope it works out, but I don't know." Her hand gripped the torch a bit firmly, the firelight casting a shadow over her face that made the frown look larger than it was.
