Nico admittedly did not want to think about the implications of playing keep away with a human skull. If he showed no interest, would Kelsier back down, or would he do something more extreme in an attempt to get Nico to play? If this person was buried here, either their family hadn’t invested in a grave stone, or the person wasn’t supposed to end up here. Which… likely implied either murder or a death of someone a very long time ago. He couldn’t tell when the person had died. He smelled no fresh blood, which implied it had been a while ago, but… hesitating, Nico moved forward towards the hole Kelsier had dug. He could see a few more bones poking out of the soil, no flesh to be seen. Gently, Nico started to scoop some of the dirt away. He knew he should call the police, but he needed to get Kelsier as far away as possible if he was going to do that.

Kelsier watched as Nico began to dig too, ears pricked. He dropped the skull after a moment and moved closer, pushing his nose into the earth to try and help find more of whatever Nico was searching for. Probably more bones…he wanted to help, since Nico seemed genuinely interested in this. Maybe he was trying to find a specific one? Either way, it wasn’t important. Kelsier stood carefully between Nico and the skull, in case he tried to take it. He wasn’t done with it yet. He still wanted fo play with it, but he’d gotten distracted by the idea of digging for the time being.

Kelsier looked up as Nico spoke, pricking his ears to see what he wanted. He tilted his head, inspecting Nico’s expression for a long moment before he looked back at the hole. It was getting bigger now. Nico was good at digging, it turned out. Kelsier was rather overjoyed at the opportunity to play together, digging up treasure and finding out what sober of things there were to uncover…mostly bones, of course, but being a wolf, he had more use for bones than treasure anyway. He dug, dirt flying back behind him, and shoved his nose into the dirt, snorting so he could actually smell it, instead of just breathing it.

At least Kelsier was enthusiastic about the digging. He seemed to be enthusiastic about everything he did, though whether that was a wolf trait or a Kelsier-specific trait was anybody’s guess. While Nico was grateful for the help, he was also nervous about what kind of evidence they were putting on the bones. If this body was placed here recently, then neither of them would have an alibi if their DNA was found on the bones. Kelsier might get tried and sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit, unless his wolf DNA was different from his human DNA. Nico took in a breath he didn’t need, trying to be calm about the situation. They were going to be fine. Eventually, he stood back, having recovered the full body. “We should tell someone about this, shouldn’t we,” Nico whispered, reaching a hand out for Kelsier.

Kelsier could tell they’d found all the bones, but he didn’t stop digging right away. Mostly because he liked to dig, but also just to make sure they hadn’t missed anything else interesting. He stood back after a moment, panting lightly as he looked over all the bones they’d found. There wasn’t anything left to eat, naturally, but he still kind of wanted to chew on them. He let Nico pet him, relaxing the rest of the way under his touch. Whatever they were going to do now, he wasn’t worried. He didn’t know enough to be worried.

Kelsier sighed gently, leaning to the side so he could press lightly against Nico’s leg, his tail thumping gently against the grass. It was a very nice place, in his opinion. The air was fresh, the grass was soft, the wind was just crisp enough to excite him, but not enough to hurt his eyes when he stared into it, and there were toys hidden in the ground, like buried treasure. It had been a good night so far, even if it hadn’t been as lively as the last night in his memory. It was peaceful. He didn’t remember ever feeling peaceful before.

Kelsier let his tongue hand out at Nico’s touch, leaning his weight against Nico’s leg. This had been a good night. He thought Nico might have been worried about something, but he wasn’t completely sure, and the best way he knew how to comfort someone was to lay on top of them anyway, so leaning was a good start. He still had a lot of energy, though. He half wanted to go race Nico down the mountain, but it was more a passing though than an impulse he was going to follow.

Kelsier half closed his eyes, arching his neck for a moment so he could look up at Nico, head tilted. Nico, he noticed, felt stressed behind his soft tone, the slight tension of his muscles at odds with the way he gently scratched behind Kel’s ears. His tail thumped the going hopefully, and he stared, willing Nico to relax. Maybe they would be able to play again, if he did. Not to mention the fact that his fear made Kelsier anxious…he sniffed the air, breathing in to test for anything unfamiliar nearby, but all he could sense was Nico and the bones they’d just dug up together.

Kelsier could tell there was something wrong. He whined softly, leaning his full alight against him, craning his neck to stare up at him, hazel eyes wide and pleading. He didn’t know what it was about Nico’s voice that told him something had changed, but he didn’t want him to be distressed…his tail thumped the ground hopefully as Nico continued. He’d be alright, surely, if he just started smiling again. When he’d done it before, everything had been okay. Maybe if Kelsier could convince him to smile again now, whatever had gone wrong earlier go away again. He whined again, eyes fixed on Nico’s face, waiting to see if he would.

There was no smile, and Kelsier could tell there wasn’t going to be. He stared up at him, head tilted as he tried to work out what could be done to fix whatever had shifted in the air. He watched as Nico moved away instead. Was he meant to follow? He didn’t want to stay there… Nico’s raised hand was all the invitation he needed. He bounced after him, sprinting a few paces ahead of him and coming back again to circle around him, as excited as though he’d been missing for weeks already.

— Getting Kelsier home had been an ordeal in and of itself, but it seemed like a piece of cake now that they were there, Nico waiting for the moon to set and the sky to turn the brilliant hues of sunrise. He could never appreciate the purples and oranges that blossomed from the horizon for very long, but he figured his spot across from the window would be safe for at least a little while. He didn’t know what he was going to do when Kelsier woke up. At best, he would see that a boy had broken down his door and was taking refuge in his house. At worst… maybe he would be able to tell that Nico was supposed to be an enemy. And maybe the man wouldn’t be quite as friendly as the wolf. It didn’t matter. What mattered was warning him about what they’d found. What mattered was… was that this was a problem he couldn’t solve by himself. He needed an adult, whether he wanted to admit it or not. He may have survived years on his own, not aging, not changing, but that meant he was still a child, technically. He didn’t know how to handle the law.
