Nico waited outside the house, trying not to seem too suspicious. It was late enough at night that there weren’t going to be any neighbors around, but… a kid loitering outside the house of a respectable man holding a big hunk of meat was probably enough to make anyone concerned. Especially if the man wasn’t known to associate with kids. Nico knew for a fact that no other kids had entered or exited the house. Perhaps it was wrong to keep an eye on Kelsier over the course of the month, but… curiosity had gotten the better of him. Besides, he could only do it during the night, when Kelsier was surprisingly active. Perhaps he had adjusted his sleep schedule around the fact that he didn’t get any sleep at all on the full moon. Or perhaps he hadn’t realized that yet. When Kelsier didn’t emerge from inside the building, Nico felt concern shudder through him. Had something happened? Was he okay? And then the howl broke through, sending goosebumps up Nico’s arms. He couldn’t get cold anymore, but he wasn’t cold now. He was concerned. That howl… he shook his head, then slammed his body into the door frame, successfully knocking it in. He didn’t know where in the house Kelsier was, but he was going to find him.

Kelsier was tired of being stuck here. He didn’t want to sit in this house anymore. He had wandered the entire building, and he couldn’t find any way to get out of it. He didn’t quite understand that technically he could probably shatter a window if he wanted to, or that he could probably have broken down a door as easily as a vampire good. He was just frustrated. He yelped and hopped backwards as the door was abruptly knocked in, rearing out on his hind legs a little before he came back down. It took a minute for him to realize who has just rescued him, but the moment he caught Nico’s scent he dashed towards him, barking and running around him in excited circles.

Nico stood, gasping, right outside the door. He had managed to break it down, but it didn’t really matter if he couldn’t actually go inside. He needed an invitation. Technically, the howl had been a call for help, not an invitation. Nico cursed under his breath, then gave a loud sigh of relief as he realized that Kelsier hadn’t been trapped in a specific room or anything. He gave a quiet laugh as the wolf began bounding around him, clearly excited both to be rescued, and to be rescued by a friend. “Hello to you, too,” he said quietly, then tossed the steak in front of him. “I figured you might want something to eat. It’s been a while since you’ve had any food, hasn’t it?” [/i]

Kelsier was happy to see Nico. Very happy, actually. He didn’t know he couldn’t come in the house, but that was okay…he didn’t need to. Kelsier could come out just fine, couldn’t he? He was almost excited enough to knock Nico over, but the steak distracted him. He snapped it out of the air and began to inhale it as fast as he could, not bothering to chew all that much as he ripped off pieces he could swallow. It was demolished in seconds. He looked up, licking his lips and waving his tail as he caught sight of Nico again.

Kelsier sniffed around the ground for a long moment, looking for any scraps he might have failed to inhale. He didn’t find any. He’d been thorough. That was alright. He wasn’t actually all that hungry anymore, and he had other things to do now, like follow Nico around and play with him. He didn’t have any idea what they might be doing tonight, but that was fine. Who needed plans? He trotted over to the boy, pausing in front of him to tilt his head and wave his tail a little. What was he doing? The grass was comfortable, of course, but Kelsier wasn’t tired enough to sit.

Nico’s lip quirked up into a smile as he watched Kelsier’s tail wagging excitedly. It wasn’t as out of control as it had been when they were playing fetch, but there was no question that the wolf was excited. Good. Nico was excited, too, and it was nice to have confirmation that Kelsier enjoyed his company as much as Nico enjoyed Kel’s. He felt a little bit bad that he had learned his name from snooping through his mail, but it wasn’t like anyone had caught him. And it wasn’t like he had referred to the wolf as Kelsier… that felt like it was crossing a line. As long as he kept this wolf separate from the human he became for most of the month, he’d be fine. Bracing a hand against Kelsier’s back, Nico pulled himself to his feet, then began walking. He gestured for Kelsier to follow him. It was going to take a while, but he did have a destination in mind.

Kelsier tilted his head at Nico, waiting for…something. He wasn’t entirely sure what he was waiting for, only that Nico was exciting, and he wanted to be excited. And he was already excited, but he wanted to do something with his friend. Something other than sitting. Then Nico was up, and Kelsier’s tail waved harder, his eyes intense as he looked up at the boy. He cocked his head as he began to walk away. That was…not quite what Kelsier had expected him to do. He stared after him, tail going still for a moment as he tried to figure out where he was going. It wasn’t the direction he’d gone before. Maybe he was looking for something. Or maybe he was leaving… Kelsier barked softly. He wasn’t ready to lose his friend. It had taken forever to get to him in the first place.

Nico turned at the sound of the soft bark, eyes widening as he realized that Kelsier wasn’t following him. Oh… it probably looked like he was leaving, which hadn’t been his intention at all. An apologetic smile appeared on his face and he gently patted his thighs in what he hoped would be an understandable sign for “come here.” He should have brought more steak… that might have been the way to entice Kelsier to follow him… he would have tried a leash, but he didn’t want to incur the wolf’s wrath. He wasn’t a domestic dog, a collar and leash wouldn’t do anything other than irritate him. If Nico were planning on going farther than he was, though, he may have considered it regardless. “Don’t worry,” he said, keeping his voice calm as he gestured once more for Kelsier to follow. “I have somewhere exciting for us to go. I’m not leaving you behind.”

Kelsier pricked his ears as Nico turned. Was he coming back? Were they going to play after all? He cocked his head, watching him. He looked like he was trying to accomplish something. The question was…what? Then he patted his thighs and something in Kelsier’ brain clicked. He brightened instantly and trotted forwards to join Nico, tail resuming its happy waving as he caught up. Something to do. Something to do with Nico.

Kelsier fell into step alongside Nico, keeping up easily. He could have gone faster, but he didn’t actually know where they were headed, and he liked walking next to Nico. It was peaceful. For now. He could smell a lot of different things on the air. Vague scents of blood and steak from Nico. Plants. Flowers, more specifically. Night had its own interesting scent. And humans, though he couldn’t tell how close they were. He probably could have, if he’d tried. But he didn’t.

Nico’s sense of smell wasn’t as good as Kelsier’s, but it was moderately comparable. He could sense the humans nearby, at least, and he was grateful that they hadn’t seem to have caught Kelsier’s attention. Surely he knew they were there, but he hadn’t descended into bloodlust as he had before. He wasn’t stalking them, trying to figure out which was weakest. It seemed that the steak had been a good idea. Nico made a mental note to try to bring more next time. This one had been expensive, though, and he had been determined to pay for it instead of just stealing it, so… he would have to find a better way to fund it next time. It was difficult, being the age he was when he was turned. Nobody was willing to hire a kid who looked ten, no matter what his fake ID said.

Kelsier wasn’t bothered by the smell of humans, not like he’d been before. He was half tempted to go see them, but he didn’t feel like killing anyone. He would much rather follow Nico, really. He wanted to know where they were going. So he didn’t veer off as he followed. He wasn’t actually hungry, somehow. Not that he would have turned down food, of course, but…he wasn’t actively hungry. He was distractible, though. For now, he didn’t see anything that was going to draw his attention. But if the walk was too long, there were no guarantees.

Kelsier had every intention of following Nico properly. He really did. He wanted to get where they were going, too. Even if he didn’t know where that actually was. So he did keep up. Everything seemed peaceful, and even the smell of humans couldn’t pull him away. Actually…he thought he was more interested in the smell of meat Nico still had on him. Did he have any more? He bounded as Nico sped up, attention successfully pulled back to the boy. It wasn’t hard to keep up…he sprang forwards, passing Nico and galloping along the path, bucking a bit as though trying to dismount an invisible rider. He may not have known where they were headed, but he could still try and get there first.

Kelsier glanced behind him, trying to see what Nico was doing. Not that he needed to. Nico was catching up, fast. He sped up, trying to stay ahead of him, no longer bucking in favor of speeding. He didn’t know where they were going, but that was fine. He didn’t need to. He wasn’t really paying much attention to his surroundings anymore. It was hard f9 stay ahead of Nico, but it wasn’t impossible. Not yet. Not unless Nico actually did have inhuman speed at his disposal. Kelsier had never seen him go all that fast, though, so the thought didn’t even occur to him.

Kelsier didn’t know it was a delicate game. For him, it was anything but. He scrambled to stay ahead, trying to win a race against the only person who knew the destination, but he did manage to take the right path, so that was something. It was …a field. Kelsier slowed as they made it, eyes alert as he looked around, taking it all in. It was up high. He could see a lot of bright lights when he looked down. He trotted away from Nico as they arrived and moved towards the edge of the field, curiosity getting the better of him. He could smell a lot of things…not the sort of scents he was used to, either. It felt a lot more wild up here. Less human. He sniffed the ground. Not a lot of people had been here, not recently anyway. It was secluded. He could tell various animals had come here yesterday, though he didn’t recognize all of them.

There were a variety of reasons Nico had chosen the spot he did. It was secluded, for one, so there was little chance of Kelsier trying to hurt anyone because he scented humans. It had a beautiful view, which Nico certainly appreciated. It was large enough that if Nico found a nice stick he would be able to throw it, and there were enough trees around the perimeter of the field that he thought they could play hide and seek if Kelsier grasped the rules of the game. That one might be a little bit more complicated, though he thought it would be fun to try. Maybe not this month, but next month at the very least. “Do you like it here?” Nico asked, voice soft as he began to approach the very edge of the field. He didn’t know why it was easier to speak to Kel in Italian, but it was. It was more comfortable, for one. And it felt a little bit like a secret. Kelsier may not have understood what he said, but he was able to pick up on the tone. Nobody else would be able to understand him either, unless they spoke Italian. “Careful of the edge,” Nico warned, plopping down when he was about a foot away from it. He absentmindedly picked a blade of grass, tearing it into sections as he looked out over the city.

Kelsier stopped near the edge, ears and tail alert as he looked at the city far below. He couldn’t tell exactly how far it was, but it looked…far. He sniffed the air, taking in the ways it was different from the scents further down, and for a long moment he seemed almost to forget he wasn’t alone. The view wasn’t like anything he could remember seeing before, and the scents, too…he didn’t know this place, but he wasn’t going to forget it now that he’d found it. He crept a little closer to the edge, trying to look straight down. Was it steep? It looked steep. He didn’t know why, but the height intrigued him. He wanted to see how far down it was. Nico wasn’t quite forgotten, but he wasn’t the center of attention at the moment either…there were interesting things here. Things he didn’t quite understand. Maybe things he wanted to see better. He didn’t understand the Italian any better than he did the English, but he liked the sound of it in Nico’s voice. It felt…comfortable. Like Nico’s comfort in the language automatically made Kelsier comfortable, too.

Nico was perfectly content to let Kelsier explore. He was a wild animal who had been trapped in the middle of a city. He couldn’t say for sure whether Kelsier belonged out here, but it certainly gave him more freedom than a cramped city did. Besides, he wouldn’t have to worry about encountering people here. The temptation to eat wouldn’t be so profound. “Don’t fall,” Nico warned idly, but it wasn’t as though Kelsier was particularly clumsy. Well… he wasn’t clumsy as long as he wasn’t dragging around a tree branch that was nearly twice his size. The thought brought a gentle smile to Nico’s face, and he let himself fall back into the grass, gaze focusing on the stars. It was off to him, that they were made of the same things as the sun, but it was only the sun that burned him. He was grateful he couldn’t be set alight by the stars. Physically, at least. They worked wonders on his mind. “It’s nice out here,” Nico whispered, just loudly enough that Kelsier could hear him. “Quiet. It just.. feels more natural. I guess it feels safer, too.” He sighed quietly, one hand reaching up to trace patterns in the stars. He was young, as far as vampires went. He knew that eventually there would be people with different names for these same constellations. Would they still be the same stars if they were called by unfamiliar titles? The universe felt so big. Nico wished he could shrink it down to just this moment.

Kelsier already liked it up here a lot. He didn’t hate the city, of course, but there was always noise and smells and humans and other things he didn’t really understand, and it was a lot easier to focus up here, where there weren’t as many things to draw his attention. He hadn’t noticed the stars, but he liked the trees and the cliff and the scent of wildlife. Even if he did struggle to decide what to track first. The peaceful atmosphere made him less inclined to be as insane as he had been the last month. He trotted around the edges of the field, not wandering too far, but far enough that he couldn’t quite see Nico anymore. He wanted to see whether he could find something interesting. Or maybe just something to mess with. It didn’t have to be too interesting to work. He wasn’t worried about Nico. Nico was good at finding him. And the vampire didn’t seem too inclined to move at the moment, either. There were just…things Kel wanted to see. Or maybe discover, since he didn’t know what they were.

Nico didn’t like not having Kelsier in eyeshot, but he could still hear his heartbeat. As long as that continued as it should, Nico felt pretty safe leaving Kelsier to his own devices. He would get up and play with him in a few minutes, but Kelsier seemed calmer than Nico had ever seen him. It was actually rather nice, knowing that Kelsier was content and happy to amuse himself for a little while. Not that Nico disliked spending time with him, but… he was enjoying the freedom to just lay where he was and not have to worry about his friend. Eventually Nico lifted his head up, then pushed himself back into a standing position. He didn’t want to fall asleep there, not when there was still so much night left to enjoy. He wasn’t going to waste his time with Kelsier – he was all too aware of the fact that he didn’t get much of it. “Did you find anything interesting?” Nico asked as he began to approach the wolf, keeping his voice quiet so as not to startle him.

Kelsier didn’t mind that he hadn’t been followed. Nico seemed fine where he was, and Kelsier had his own things to mess with and track and sniff. He’d never been there before, which meant he needed to know everything there was to know about the place. It wasn’t too exciting. There weren’t a lot of things to find. That was okay. He was interested in the mundane, too. He pricked his ears as Nico’s voice finally sounded behind him, and waved his tail in a soundless greeting. Then he pawed at the ground. Was something buried here? He gave a quiet bark and began to dig, which was a lot more impressive with his size and strength then it was for most dogs. He wasn’t sure he was right, but he felt like maybe something was hidden here…he wanted to find out what it was. Maybe it was food.

Nico managed to catch up to Kelsier, uncertain what he was looking at. He wasn’t terribly concerned – as long as no humans caught Kelsier’s eye, they would be fine. There were, of course, the ethical considerations about whether or not Kelsier was vegan, but he had already given him a full-sized steak, so… maybe not being vegan while your body was a carnivore wasn’t really an ethical dilemma. It was much easier to think of Kelsier the Wolf and Kelsier the Human as two separate beings. The same way someone might say ‘Well, you’ve never seen me in the same room as Superman, so…’ One couldn’t exist in the same space as the other, but that didn’t necessarily mean they were the same being. Slowly, Nico settled to the ground to observe Kelsier’s digging. He didn’t know what the wolf had found, but he was intrigued to see what had compelled him to dig. Part of him wondered if Kelsier knew that himself, or if he was digging because he was curious, too. Nico couldn’t hear or feel anything under the ground, but that didn’t mean anything.

Kelsier as he was now didn’t care if he was vegan. His body didn’t, either. Technically, he could probably be considered a cannibal if you were going to consider the two versions of him the same, so that was probably not the biggest concern, anyway. He wouldn’t have died if he wasn’t allowed to eat as a wolf. He was always starving when he turned, though, so it wasn’t like keeping him from finding something would have been very easy. He didn’t really care about that now. He wasn’t actively hungry and there was no food present, so it wasn’t on his mind. It instantly would be if he caught the scent of something connected to it, but until then, he was busy with other things. He dug, dirt spraying in all directions as he kept at it. He was getting closer…he didn’t know how close, but he wasn’t going to stop trying. And there it was. He shoved his face into the loose dirt and snorted, tail waving as he found it. It was… He straightened up, a skull held carefully between his teeth. He looked at Nico expectantly, ready to be told what to do with this discovery.

That… wasn’t what Nico had been expecting to come out of the hole. He had thought there might be some kind of buried treasure, or perhaps even some animal bones, but… real human bones were a concern. He looked around to make sure they weren’t in a graveyard of any sort, but it didn’t seem they were. This was a body dump, though he couldn’t tell how long the bones had been in the earth. He wished he knew what to do in this situation. If he were a normal human being, he would call the police and let them take care of it. He wasn’t human, though… they would question him, and if he was here when the sun rose, he would die. They would want to take Kelsier into custody, and how was Nico supposed to explain to them that he was a werewolf? What would Kelsier the human do if he were to wake up in a jail cell? It seemed almost better to leave it alone, but then they would find Kelsier’s DNA on the skull, because that was something humanity could do, now… “Is it… real?” Nico asked after a moment, though he knew it was. His mind had gone into overdrive trying to think up a brilliant solution to keep them both out of trouble. He had nothing.

Kelsier had none of Nico’s concerns. He could tell these were human bones, naturally, but he wasn’t aware of the implications. He had found something interesting, and he wanted to show his friend. And also, it smelled good. Really good. Could a werewolf live off of anything but humans? It wasn’t like he’d ever had the chance to find out before. He watched Nico for a long moment, gaze steady, tail waving. Then he play bowed and ducked a few steps back, like he’d done with the stick. Whether there was anything else buried wasn’t entirely clear, but he did have the skull, and he saw no reason not to use it.
